Reanalysis And (Near) Real-Time Inversion Of Deformation Observations At Alaskan Volcanoes, Mario Fernando Angarita Vargas Aug 2025

Reanalysis And (Near) Real-Time Inversion Of Deformation Observations At Alaskan Volcanoes, Mario Fernando Angarita Vargas

Geosciences

Forecasting volcanic eruptions remains challenging due to the complexity and limited understanding of volcanic processes. However, recent studies have shown that integrating multidisciplinary data from past eruptions can improve forecasts for monitored volcanoes. The PREEVENTS project addresses this challenge identifying patterns prior, during or following volcanic eruptions on multidisciplinary data. The project considers four disciplines: Geodesy, Petrology, Seismology and Gas/Geochemistry. This dissertation contributes with two novel tools to analyze geodetic data. The first tool exploits the amplitude from SAR imagery to quantify morphology changes during eruptions. The tool has been verified with a synthetic case and validated with a dome …

The National Science Foundation Prediction of and Resilience against Extreme Events (PREEVENTS) project aims to re-analyze and combine multidisciplinary observations at eight Alaska volcanoes to develop eruption forecast models. Leading the seismology and infrasound discipline, this dissertation details the development of automated tools capable of producing high-resolution catalogs of volcanic unrest signals from continuous seismic and acoustic data. By leveraging these catalogs and synthesizing …

Exploring Longitudinal Stability Of Spatiotemporal Sequential Patterns By Means Of Autoencoder Schemes For Eeg Based Personal Identification, Muhammed E. Oztemel Aug 2025

Exploring Longitudinal Stability Of Spatiotemporal Sequential Patterns By Means Of Autoencoder Schemes For Eeg Based Personal Identification, Muhammed E. Oztemel

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Robust personal identification remains a critical and challenging task in the digital era. Electroencephalography (EEG) offers a unique biometric modality that captures individual brain dynamics through complex neural signals. This dissertation proposes autoencoder (AE) based feature extraction and subject identification through these features. EEG recordings are first transformed into topographic maps to represent spatial brain activity. Consecutive topomaps are then concatenated to capture temporal transitions across frames. Convolutional autoencoders (CAEs) are used to learn spatial and temporal patterns, while domain-adaptive AEs are designed to model evoked potential based responses. Additionally, self-attention mechanism is incorporated to enhance feature representation. To analyze …

Performance Analysis Of Pem Fuel Cells Via Puma Optimizer With The Aid Of Practical Verifications, Hossamm Ashraf, Sameh O. Abdellatif, Mahmoud M. Elkholy \, Attia A. El-Fergany

Electrical Engineering

This manuscript presents a novel application of the recently developed Puma Optimizer (PO) for identifying the unknown parameters in Mann’s model, which is widely used for characterizing the behavior of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs). The proposed PO-based methodology is rigorously evaluated using three test cases. One test case involves experimental I–V measurements under various operating conditions from a commercial PEMFC stack, the Horizon H-100 (100 W), which was assembled and tested in the laboratory. The other two cases are established benchmark PEMFC systems, the Ballard Mark V 5 kW and BCS 500 W units. Comprehensive statistical analyses over …

Uncovering The Hidden High School Experiences Of Asian American Young Adults: A Mixed Methods Approach, Julia Shin Aug 2025

Uncovering The Hidden High School Experiences Of Asian American Young Adults: A Mixed Methods Approach, Julia Shin

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

Most research regarding Asian American adolescents’ high school experiences have been quantitative in nature, leaving out the nuances of their lived experiences. While quantitative data is important to gather measurable, objective data from a larger sample of people, qualitative data is also important to add depth and humanness to participant responses. Thirty-two Asian American young adults participated in a mixed methods study that consisted of a survey and optional focus group, aiming to explore the impact of the internalization of the model minority stereotype (MMS), ethnic identity, and representation of racially and ethnically minoritized teachers on their high school experiences. …

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Cognitive tests measure psychological constructs that predict the development of academic skills. Research on cognitive–reading achievement relations has primarily been completed with single-test batteries and samples, resulting in inconsistencies across studies. The current study developed a consensus model of cognitive–reading achievement relations using meta-structural equation modeling (meta-SEM) through a cross-sectional analysis of subtest correlations from English-language norm-referenced tests. The full dataset used for this study included 49,959 correlations across 599 distinct correlation matrices. These included correlations among 1112 subtests extracted from 137 different cognitive and achievement test batteries. The meta-SEM approach allowed for increased sampling of cognitive and academic reading …

Multi-Layered Framework For Llm Hallucination Mitigation In High-Stakes Applications: A Tutorial, Sachin Hiriyanna, Wenbing Zhao Aug 2025

Multi-Layered Framework For Llm Hallucination Mitigation In High-Stakes Applications: A Tutorial, Sachin Hiriyanna, Wenbing Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Large language models (LLMs) now match or exceed human performance on many open-ended language tasks, yet they continue to produce fluent but incorrect statements, which is a failure mode widely referred to as hallucination. In low-stakes settings this may be tolerable; in regulated or safety-critical domains such as financial services, compliance review, and client decision support, it is not. Motivated by these realities, we develop an integrated mitigation framework that layers complementary controls rather than relying on any single technique. The framework combines structured prompt design, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) with verifiable evidence sources, and targeted fine-tuning aligned with domain truth …

The Future Intensification Of Hydrological Extremes And Whiplashes In The Contiguous United States Increase Community Vulnerability, Surendra Maharjan, Wenzhao Li, John D. Bolten, Hesham El-Askary

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Hydroclimatic whiplash rapid shifts between drought and flood poses growing risks to U.S. communities. Here, we assess historical extremes and future projections using a normalized streamflow metric: the annual mean flow’s deviation from the 1981–2020 average, expressed as a fraction of that average. This metric is applied to United States Geological Survey records and Localized Constructed Analogs downscaled projections under Representative Concentration Pathways 4.5 and 8.5. Results reveal sharp regional disparities, with drought deficits exceeding 300% of normal flow during multi-year droughts. By linking hydrologic outcomes with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Risk Index, we find that counties facing …

Receiver Function Imaging Of The Mantle Transition Zone Beneath The East Sayan Mountains And Adjacent Area In Central Asia: Implications For Lithospheric Drip And Intraplate Cenozoic Volcanism, Yangyang Liao, Kelly H. Liu, Stephen S. Gao

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

To provide constraints on the formation mechanisms of intracontinental volcanisms and intriguing lithospheric thickness variations in the East Sayan Mountains and surrounding areas, we stack P-to-s receiver functions to image the 410-km and 660-km discontinuities. Mantle transition zone (MTZ) thickening observed in a continuous area is attributable to ancient slab remnants, and Cenozoic volcanisms in the peripheral area can be explained by slab dehydration. The thinning of the MTZ in the Tuva-Mongolian Massif can be explained by mantle upwelling branches induced by slab subduction. Our results reveal an approximately circular area in the MTZ that is significantly thicker than usual, …

Topological And Information-Theoretic Analysis Of Climate-Driven Indonesian Throughflow Dynamics, Sandy H. S. Herho, Katarina E.P. Herho, Iwan P. Anwar, Rusmawan Suwarman

Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)

The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) represents the sole tropical pathway connecting Pacific and Indian Oceans, yet quantitative understanding of climate mode influences on its variability remains incomplete. We applied information-theoretic and topological frameworks to analyze 34 years (1984-2017) of observational ITF transport data alongside ENSO and IOD indices. Bootstrap analysis revealed pronounced ITF seasonality with 13.28 Sv amplitude peaking in September, contrasting with negligible climate index annual cycles, indicating scale separation in forcing mechanisms. Multi-method extrema detection identified 36-41 extreme events per variable, with 23.1% coincidence between ENSO and IOD high extrema confirming known co-occurrence patterns. Ensemble information-theoretic metrics demonstrated ENSO …

Mentoring In The Undergraduate Classroom And Beyond: Creating A Feminist Praxis, Satarupa Dasgupta Aug 2025

Mentoring In The Undergraduate Classroom And Beyond: Creating A Feminist Praxis, Satarupa Dasgupta

Feminist Pedagogy

In the following critical commentary, it is discussed how mentoring--- in the classroom and in academia---can be a feminist practice that comprises an essential part of being a feminist educator. Mentorship encompasses a process in which the mentor disseminates knowledge as well as psychosocial support that are perceived by the mentee as essential for professional or personal development (Sedlacek et al., 2007). Mentorship has been specifically found to fulfill professional needs for women, while enhancing their self-worth and sense of competence, and providing instances of role modeling and social affirmation (Meschitti & Lawton Smith, 2017).

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

Aryl alkyl sulfones are an important class of compounds in drug discovery; thus, new methods toward their synthesis are desirable. A general sulfur fluoride exchange (SuFEx) method to couple aryl sulfonyl fluorides with alkyl carbon pronucleophiles to make aryl alkyl sulfones is described. The reaction was applied to a diverse set of pronucleophiles, including esters, amides, heteroarenes, nitriles, sulfones, sulfoxides, and sulfonamides, at room temperature under mild conditions. We highlight the application of this transformation in parallel medicinal chemistry for the high-throughput generation of a broad array of aryl alkyl sulfones. Lastly, we apply this method to the late-state SuFEx …

Machine Learning-Enhanced Optimization For The Real-Time, Secure, And Efficient Operation Of The Energy-Water-Hydrogen Nexus, Mostafa Goodarzi Aug 2025

Machine Learning-Enhanced Optimization For The Real-Time, Secure, And Efficient Operation Of The Energy-Water-Hydrogen Nexus, Mostafa Goodarzi

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

Given the escalating urgency of climate change, our research addresses the imperative need to curb carbon emissions, particularly from the electricity sector, which accounts for a quarter of total emissions in the U.S. We propose integrated systems, such as the energy-water nexus (EWN) and an innovative concept known as the energy-water-hydrogen (EWH) nexus, which integrates renewable energy sources (RESs) with green hydrogen production through water electrolysis. These concepts align seamlessly with the nation’s commitment to global climate agreements, including the Paris Agreement. Furthermore, green hydrogen—a clean and efficient energy source produced via water electrolysis powered by renewable energy—emerges as a …

Gradient-Based Optimization And Control Of Systems With Two Decision-Makers And Delayed Information, Mohammad Safayet Hossain Aug 2025

Gradient-Based Optimization And Control Of Systems With Two Decision-Makers And Delayed Information, Mohammad Safayet Hossain

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

In today’s world systems are complex in nature, often involving two or more decision-makers (DMs) each attempting to optimize the performance of the system using an objective function that reflects its own preferences and is usually different from the other. Such systems are very common in power, microeconomics, and other systems. The focus of this research is how such systems are optimized and how the results of optimization are implemented in practice. Without loss of generality, we consider systems with two DMs, each attempting to optimize the system’s by minimizing its own objective function. The solution of these types of …

Continuously Variable Series Reactor Modeling And Application, Mohammadali Hayerikhiyavi Aug 2025

Continuously Variable Series Reactor Modeling And Application, Mohammadali Hayerikhiyavi

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

In today's rapidly evolving energy landscape, the Continuously Variable Series Reactor (CVSR) emerges as a vital tool for enhancing the stability and efficiency of power systems. This proposal presents a detailed investigation into the operational characteristics and performance optimization of CVSR through advanced modeling techniques. The Continuously Variable Series Reactor (CVSR) offers a unique capability to regulate the reactance of an AC circuit through the magnetizing characteristic of its ferromagnetic core. By utilizing both AC and DC windings, the CVSR effectively controls power flow, dampens oscillations, and balancing the voltage within the power grid. To effectively integrate CVSR into grid …

Tail-Imbalance Diffusion Equalizer For Class-Balanced Generation, Chinmay Dhanraj Nehate Aug 2025

Tail-Imbalance Diffusion Equalizer For Class-Balanced Generation, Chinmay Dhanraj Nehate

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

Real-world image corpora are often imbalanced. On long-tailed datasets, the head class can outnumber the tail by a large margin, and a vanilla diffusion probabilistic model (DPM) consequently loses fidelity and diversity on rare categories, undermining controllable generation. To address this gap, we present Tail Imbalance Diffusion Equalizer (TIDE), a training framework that restores class balance without discarding data or adding extra training stages. Our contribution is threefold: (i) score field rebalancing, where we embed class-prior knowledge into a mixing matrix that routes gradients toward minority classes, with this class-prior knowledge consisting of the empirical label frequencies in the training …

A Forgotten Kairos: Rhetorical Memory In 16th Century Europe, Phillip Martin Aug 2025

A Forgotten Kairos: Rhetorical Memory In 16th Century Europe, Phillip Martin

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

In 16th century Europe the nearly 2000-year-old discipline of rhetoric, still a pillar of education, underwent significant change. One of the more curious changes occurred in rhetoric’s subdivision known as memory, memoria, that is, memory’s “artificial” cultivation. During the 16th century rhetorical memory was paradoxically both maximized and marginalized as a discipline. And by the early 17th century memoria was all but extinct as a branch of rhetoric. The causal mechanisms of this transformation remain underexamined, particularly by rhetoric and composition scholars, and most explanations remain unclear and uncompelling. Accordingly, this thesis attempts a new approach …

Fit Index Criteria For Multisample Analysis In Sem With Ordinal Data: A Monte Carlo Simulation Study, Suat Babayigit Aug 2025

Fit Index Criteria For Multisample Analysis In Sem With Ordinal Data: A Monte Carlo Simulation Study, Suat Babayigit

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

Measurement invariance is crucial for valid group comparisons in structural equation modeling (SEM), yet testing invariance becomes challenging when using ordinal data. This dissertation evaluates the adequacy of widely used fit index difference criteria (ΔCFI, ΔRMSEA, ΔSRMR) for multisample invariance testing with ordinal indicators. Traditional Δ fit cutoff thresholds were established based on continuous, normally distributed data, but ordinal measures can distort invariance conclusions. Monte Carlo simulations address this issue by manipulating a comprehensive set of conditions: sample sizes (200, 400, 1000), group size ratios (equal vs. unequal), model complexity (low vs. high), underlying distributions (normal vs. nonnormal), Likert scale …
