Patent Paradox: When Protection Becomes Proliferation, Austin Talir Sep 2025

Patent Paradox: When Protection Becomes Proliferation, Austin Talir

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

This paper examines the problematic practice of double patenting and patent proliferation within the United States patent system, analyzing how these practices undermine the constitutional mandate to “promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts.” The analysis demonstrates how double patenting—both statutory and nonstatutory types—enables companies to extend monopolistic control beyond the intended 20-year patent term, creating significant economic distortions through reduced competition, increased market entry barriers, and innovation anti-commons, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry. The paper documents how these practices directly impact healthcare accessibility through increased medical costs, delayed generic alternatives, and misaligned research priorities that disproportionately affect vulnerable …

How Life-Cycle Real-World Evidence Can Bridge Evidentiary Gaps In Precision Oncology, Emanuel Krebs, Deirdre Weymann, Tania M. Bubela, Dean A. Regier Sep 2025

How Life-Cycle Real-World Evidence Can Bridge Evidentiary Gaps In Precision Oncology, Emanuel Krebs, Deirdre Weymann, Tania M. Bubela, Dean A. Regier

Office of the Provost

Precision oncology uses omics-based diagnostic technologies to inform histology-agnostic cancer treatment. To date, health system implementation remains limited owing to high uncertainty in regulatory and reimbursement evidence submissions. In this perspective, we describe a life-cycle approach to the evaluation of precision oncology technologies that addresses evidentiary uncertainty and is grounded in real-world evidence (RWE) derived using data routinely collected by healthcare systems. We consider the role for RWE in international regulatory and reimbursement decision-making, review common biases for observational precision oncology evaluations, make specific recommendations for RWE study design and analysis, and specify healthcare system requirements for data collection. We …

Emerging Clinical Role Of Tavapadon, A Novel Dopamine Partial Agonist, In The Treatment Of Parkinson’S Disease, Alan D. Kaye, Bennett M. Ford, Brennan M. Abbott, Kalob M. Broocks, Sofia Novacic, Sahar Shekoohi Sep 2025

Emerging Clinical Role Of Tavapadon, A Novel Dopamine Partial Agonist, In The Treatment Of Parkinson’S Disease, Alan D. Kaye, Bennett M. Ford, Brennan M. Abbott, Kalob M. Broocks, Sofia Novacic, Sahar Shekoohi

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Tavapadon, a novel oral dopamine-D1R/D5R partial agonist, has been studied in recent years for the treatment of late-stage development Parkinson’s disease (PD). Levodopa, a dopamine precursor that currently remains the gold-standard first-line therapy for PD motor symptoms, serves as a benchmark against emerging dopaminergic agents. By selectively activating D1-family receptors on direct-pathway medium neurons, Tavapadon differs in that it delivers levodopa-level motor benefit while avoiding its many D2R/D3R-mediated adverse effects. In placebo-controlled trials, Tavapadon produced clear, clinically meaningful gains in motor function and day-to-day activities, as captured by the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). Recent late-stage results have revealed …

Examining The Role Of The M1 Motif Of Abcr1 Srna In Agrobacterium Tumefaciens, Daniel Arango-Cardona Sep 2025

Examining The Role Of The M1 Motif Of Abcr1 Srna In Agrobacterium Tumefaciens, Daniel Arango-Cardona

Theses and Dissertations

Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a gram-negative alphaproteobacterium that is one of the causative agents of crown gall tumors on plants. Its ability to transform plants using its T-DNA has been studied to improve plant-mediated transformation. sRNAs are small regulatory RNAs that play a role in gene expression in a variety of organisms and bind to target proteins or mRNAs. A. tumefaciens contains two sibling sRNAs, called AbcR1 and AbcR2, which are conserved among alphaproteobacteria. A. tumefaciens AbcR1 and AbcR2 are closely related, exhibiting 69% sequence identity, similar secondary and tertiary structure, and a conserved motif, M2, believed to direct target interactions. …

Major, Trace And Rare Earth Element Concentrations In Nist Standard Reference Material® 1646a Analyzed By Als Global Using Method Me-Ms61r, Jane L. Alexander

Publications and Research

This technical note compares analytical results obtained from ALS Global Method ME-MS61r with the certified and previously published results for NIST Standard Reference Material® 1646a, Estuarine Sediment. The results are grouped into major, trace and rare earth elements, and focus on elements used by sedimentary geochemists, for example in studies of sediment provenance. The results from ALS Global Method ME-MS61r are internally consistent and generally robust when compared with published analyses. However, acid digestion may not completely dissolve resistant minerals, leading to under-reporting of some elements such as Ti, Cr, Zr, heavy REE and Y.

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is central to cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and cardiomyopathy, yet the functions of many RAS genes remain unclear. This study developed a multi-label deep learning model to systematically annotate RAS gene functions and elucidate their roles in biological pathways. A total of 39,463 RAS-related publications from PubMed and PMC were processed into text format. Feature matrices were generated using TF-IDF and token processing, followed by dimensionality reduction via Principal Component Analysis (PCA). A Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) was applied for multi-label classification, with performance evaluated using Precision, F1-Score, Ranking Loss, and ROC-AUC metrics. The model outperformed …

A Search For Subdwarf B Binaries Using Pulsation Timing From Tess, Tomomi Otani, Andrzej S. Baran, Lindsay C. Spence, Ted A. Von Hippel, Ellesse A. Lynum-Lozano, Julia M. Clark

Publications

Hot subdwarf B (sdB) stars are post-main-sequence stars of high temperature and gravity. Approximately 30% of sdBs exhibit stable pressure and/or gravity-mode pulsations, which can be used via the timing method to test for companion stars and determine their orbital solutions. We used short cadence data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) to search for previously undiscovered companions to sdBs. In this paper, we focus on searching for companions with orbital periods shorter than 13.5 days which are detectable within one sector of TESS data (about 27 days). The timing method requires that we derive pulsation frequencies in subsets …

An Integrated Photovoltaic Thermal Smart Energy Station, Temitope Johnson, Tamer Kamel, David Jenkins, Gary Millar

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Since their invention, photovoltaic (PV) cells haveundergone significant technological advancements, emerging asone of the most accessible sources of clean energy with aneffectively infinite fuel supply. However, PV technologycontinues to face a critical challenge; a decline in efficiency asoperating temperatures rise above 25 °C. This research aims tomitigate the impact of elevated temperatures on PV panels byinvestigating the phase change materials (PCMs) fortemperature control of the PV panels and release theirgenerated heat to PCMs as heat collection and temporarystorage units. Consequently, the heat can be then transferredfrom the temporary storage point to a long-term heat storage inZeolite materials through supply-air duct …
