The Wave Has Rolled Upon The Rock: The Viability Of Pickett's Charge, Taylor G. Smith Nov 2025

The Wave Has Rolled Upon The Rock: The Viability Of Pickett's Charge, Taylor G. Smith

Scholars Week

This paper examines the viability of the famous military action at the Battle of Gettysburg known as “Pickett’s Charge.” It argues that the charge was not a stratagem capable of success, based on the testimonies of men on the ground on both sides of the fight, such as General James Longstreet, Major Henry Livermore Abbott, and Brigadier General Richard Garnett, as well as articles on the subject from historians from reputable publications such as Smithsonian and Defense Horizons. The finding of this paper is that, barring a miracle for the charging Confederates, that the charge was a severe miscalculation that …

A Remote Sensing Assessment Of Illegal Gold Mining And Its Impact On Forests In Amansie West District, Ghana, Mina Poku Agyemang Nov 2025

A Remote Sensing Assessment Of Illegal Gold Mining And Its Impact On Forests In Amansie West District, Ghana, Mina Poku Agyemang

Scholars Week

Forest degradation, driven primarily by human activities such as agriculture, urbanization, and mining, leads to biodiversity loss, soil erosion, and increased greenhouse gas emissions. In Ghana, illegal mining, known as ‘galamsey,’ poses significant threats to land and forest resources, damaging ecosystems and affecting public health (Aboka et al., 2018). Despite mining's contribution to Ghana's GDP, the negative impacts of illegal mining may outweigh its economic benefits. Between 2018 and 2023, Ghana lost approximately 5.9% of its forest cover while mining areas expanded by 1,917.6% (Abugre et al., 2025). This alarming situation necessitates an investigation into the changes in land use …

UAS vs. In-situ Measurement Techniques for Stream Substrates

Key words: Geomorphic, Fluvial, ArcGIS Pro, UAS

Traditionally, geomorphic assessments of streams and fluvial structures have been conducted using in-situ field techniques. These techniques include taking Wolman (D50) pebble counts to characterize substrate, measurements of stream dimensions with tape, meter sticks, and Jacob staff. We studied the efficacy of using an uncrewed aerial system (UAS) to measure the substrate composition of a section of stream along the east fork of the Clarks River in Calloway County, Kentucky. The section consists of a 30-meter riffle-pool-run sequence, with variation in substrate size to test …

A Hybrid Data Assimilation Approach For Parameter Estimation In Dynamical Systems, Xuejian Li Nov 2025

A Hybrid Data Assimilation Approach For Parameter Estimation In Dynamical Systems, Xuejian Li

Math Department Colloquium Series

In this talk, we present a hybrid data assimilation (DA) method that integrates continuous data assimilation (CDA) with particle filtering to estimate parameters in dynamical systems. Parameter estimation in such systems is particularly challenging because it involves both determining the parameters and estimating the often high-dimensional physical state. To address this difficulty, we decouple the estimation of states and parameters by employing CDA for state estimation and particle filtering for parameter estimation, with information exchanged alternately between the two. This hybrid framework leverages the strengths of CDA in handling high-dimensional state estimation and the efficiency of particle filters in estimating …

Bactericidal activity of sulfur-doped carbon has been investigated against a common Gram-negative bacterium, Escherichia coli K-12 (E. coli), in aqueous solution. Under dark conditions, 1 h contact of carbon with bacteria resulted in a 3–4 log decrease from the initial concentration of 7 log. When exposed to visible light, a 6–7 log decrease in E. coli was observed. The bactericidal activity under dark conditions was linked to the effects of functional groups, particularly sulfonic groups, which released protons that contributed to bacterial death. Even though under visible light no reactive oxygen species (ROS) were detected in electron paramagnetic …

Witnessing A Wounded World: A Theology Of Ecological Trauma, Timothy A. Middleton Nov 2025

Witnessing A Wounded World: A Theology Of Ecological Trauma, Timothy A. Middleton

Theology

A crucial intervention at the intersection of ecotheology and trauma theology

We are in the midst of a global ecological crisis. At times, the scale of the suffering involved can be hard to fully comprehend. The whole planetary ecosystem feels out of kilter. Meanwhile, trauma theorists, and society at large, have become increasingly aware of the incidence of trauma in a growing variety of contexts. In Witnessing a Wounded World, Timothy Middleton asks what might be gained by viewing ecological suffering through the lens of trauma.

By bringing concepts and methodologies from trauma theology to bear on questions that …

Exploiting Chloride Conservative Tendencies As Contaminant Surrogates In Groundwater Transport Modeling In A Typical Hydrogeological Environment Of Northern New Jersey, Toritseju Oyen, Duke Ophori Nov 2025

Exploiting Chloride Conservative Tendencies As Contaminant Surrogates In Groundwater Transport Modeling In A Typical Hydrogeological Environment Of Northern New Jersey, Toritseju Oyen, Duke Ophori

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This study investigates the transport of chloride, a conservative tracer and surrogate for contaminants, in the fractured Brunswick aquifer of northern New Jersey using a dual-porosity MODFLOW-MT3DMS model. Focusing on the First Watchung Mountain region—a microcosm of northern New Jersey’s hydrogeological environment encompassing Montclair State University and adjoining communities, the numerical model simulates groundwater flow and solute transport in a hydrogeologically complex, urbanized setting. Results indicate that chloride migrates through the fractured aquifer via both local flow systems (e.g., Third River) and regional flow systems (Passaic River) within decades. Chloride concentrations exceeded the EPA’s 250 mg/L threshold much faster in …

Breaking The Cycle: A Teacher And Mother’S Examination Of Multi-Tiered Systems Of Support, Jessica Hinton Nov 2025

Breaking The Cycle: A Teacher And Mother’S Examination Of Multi-Tiered Systems Of Support, Jessica Hinton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The 2004 reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) included Response to Intervention (RTI) as an option for determining eligibility for learning disabilities. However, there is no required structure to follow for RTI implementation. This lack of guidance leads to a lack of clarity in implementation at district and site levels. Many states use RTI as the primary indicator of whether a student needs special education services for a learning disability. RTI is a model for delivery of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). The terms RTI and MTSS are often used interchangeably. For clarity, I use MTSS-RTI to …

Control And Thermodynamics Of Superconducting Qubits With Non-Hermitian Dynamics, Serra Erdamar Nov 2025

Control And Thermodynamics Of Superconducting Qubits With Non-Hermitian Dynamics, Serra Erdamar

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

As quantum systems are understood better from a fundamental physics perspective, we are gaining more insight and ideas for their many applications. Among them are quantum computation, sensing, and materials. Some difficulties that have been encountered are short lifetimes and coupling to unwanted modes while attempting to control these systems, resulting in error propagation. Previously, physicists have pursued Hermitian descriptions of systems to preserve unitary evolution and real-valued measurements. However, non-Hermitian systems not only provide a realistic description of physical systems within larger environments, but also a rich topological landscape from their complex energy spectrum. In this thesis, we will …

In genome-wide association studies (GWAS), thousands of genetic variants are tested to identify their associations with a phenotype. GWAS have identified many strongly associated genetic variants with phenotypes and have greatly enhanced our understanding of the genetic architecture of complex phenotypes and diseases. Joint analysis of multiple phenotypes can increase the overall statistical power to detect genetic associations and allows for the identification of pleiotropic loci. A phenotype-phenotype network (PPN) represents phenotypes as nodes and the relationships between them as edges, which allows for the visualization of complex relationships between phenotypes, making it easier to identify clusters and helps us …

Artificial Light At Night Can Worsen Competitive Outcomes Between Native And Invasive Grasses, Shannon M. Murphy, Kylee Grenis, Anna A. Sher

Biological Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is an important global disturbance that affects community dynamics, but how it affects species interactions, such as competition, is not well understood and needs investigation. In plant communities, some exotic-invasive plant species seem to be facilitated by ALAN, which may alter competitive outcomes with native plant communities and promote invasion. Despite these intriguing results, whether ALAN affects competitive outcomes between native and invasive species is understudied. Here we tested how ALAN affects competitive outcomes between two native prairie grasses and two grasses that are exotic-invasive in North America. We planted each native species with a …

A Study Of Nonlinear Duffing Equations Using The Haar Wavelet Method, Kumbinarasaiah S., Yeshwanth R., Nandeesh K C.

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The main goal of this study is to solve Duffing equations, which are nonlinear differential equations (DEs), using the Haar wavelet technique. The solutions to this equation for an externally pushed and damped oscillator show intriguing dynamic behavior. Mathematicians have recently become more interested in wavelet analysis because of its real-world applications. A few real-world problems have been considered to assess the current methodology. Here, the (OMI) Operational Matrix of Integration and collocation points transform the non-linear ODEs into a system of nonlinear algebraic equations. The resulting system of algebraic equations is then solved using the Newton-Raphson technique to retrieve …

Tumor-Informed Minimal Residual Disease Testing In Select Solid Tumors And Hematologic Malignancies: A Narrative Review, Humza Mallick, Marcus Yoakam, Varun Karri, Samir Dalia

Student Publications

Tumor-informed circulating tumor DNA assays detect patient-specific cancer mutations in plasma and hold promise for detecting minimal residual disease (MRD) after or during definitive therapy. Recent large studies across solid tumors and hematologic malignancies suggest that tumor-informed MRD (TI-MRD) is strongly prognostic for relapse and survival. We reviewed disease evidence for these claims, as well as the potential utility in guiding therapeutic decisions. TI-MRD assays consistently achieved high analytical sensitivity. In solid tumors (colorectal cancer [CRC], non-small-cell lung cancer, breast cancer, and bladder cancer), multiple studies demonstrated that post-treatment MRD positivity conferred markedly worse recurrence-free and overall survival. TI-MRD positivity …

Molecular Fluctuations Inhibit Intermittency In Compressible Turbulence, Ishan Srivastava, Andrew Nonaka, Weiqun Zhang, Alejandro Luis Garcia, John B. Bell Nov 2025

Molecular Fluctuations Inhibit Intermittency In Compressible Turbulence, Ishan Srivastava, Andrew Nonaka, Weiqun Zhang, Alejandro Luis Garcia, John B. Bell

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In the standard picture of fully developed turbulence, highly intermittent hydrodynamic fields are nonlinearly coupled across scales, where local energy cascades from large scales into dissipative vortices and large density gradients. Microscopically, however, constituent fluid molecules are in constant thermal (Brownian) motion, but the role of molecular fluctuations in large-scale turbulence is largely unknown, and with rare exceptions, it has historically been considered irrelevant at scales larger than the molecular mean free path. Recent theoretical and computational investigations have shown that molecular fluctuations can impact energy cascade at Kolmogorov length scales. Here, we show that molecular fluctuations not only modify …

Improving Coral Restoration Outcomes Through Novel Molecular Applications, Matthew H. Gamache Nov 2025

Improving Coral Restoration Outcomes Through Novel Molecular Applications, Matthew H. Gamache

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Coral reef ecosystems are declining globally from numerous stressors, including localized pollution, disease, and marine heatwaves induced by climate change. To preserve these ecosystems, it is critical to identify corals that can withstand stressors—primarily future marine heatwaves—and prioritize them for coral restoration efforts until these stressors are mitigated. Coral responses to thermal stress can be influenced by several partners, including mutualistic microalgae and a vast prokaryotic community. Here, I use advanced molecular techniques to examine which partners (coral host, algal symbiont, and microbial communities) are associated with coral health, how they contribute to holobiont physiology, and their potential to increase …

Climate Change Agricultural Comparative Advantage And The Us Trade Balance, Elizabeth A. Fraysse, Thomas Hertel, Roman M. Keeney Nov 2025

Climate Change Agricultural Comparative Advantage And The Us Trade Balance, Elizabeth A. Fraysse, Thomas Hertel, Roman M. Keeney

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

Current science indicates that warming and elevated atmospheric CO2 will have ambiguous results for crop productivity depending on crop type and geographic location, whereas increased heat stress makes livestock and human labor less productive. The differential impacts across regions will alter comparative advantage and shift the patterns of global trade. This paper employs an economywide trade model to assess all three types of productivity shocks under a 3°C global warming scenario. We find that the widening agricultural trade deficits persist, even as the overall US trade balance improves due to enhanced investment inflows.

Evaluating The Pollutant Permeation Index (Ppi) For Regional Air Quality Assessment: A Study Of Los Angeles And California Regions, Jivar Afshar, Arezoo Khodayari, Sina Taghvaee

CSU Journal of Sustainability and Climate Change

Air pollution poses significant challenges by affecting public health, increasing the prevalence of air quality-related diseases, and contributing to climate change. Federal, state, and local governments are implementing various regulations and policies to mitigate these effects. However, assessing the effectiveness of localized air pollution regulations remains complex, often relying on extensive data collection methods, such as emission inventories. This paper introduces the Pollution Permeation Index (PPI), a novel method that simplifies the evaluation of health burdens resulting from pollutant migration between neighboring regions. The PPI method employs straightforward calculations to quantify how pollutants, including Ozone (O₃), fine Particulate Matter (PM …

Limited studies have been conducted regarding the fecal contamination and microbial dispersal through rainwater, with no known studies investigating the potential connection between antibiotic resistant microbes and water quality in rainwater. This study seeks to identify the presence of a correlation between water quality and incidence of antibiotic resistance in rainwater microbes. We hypothesize that there will be a correlation between these two variables. We additionally anticipate a high incidence of fecal contamination across rural and urban collection sites alike, with fecal contamination being more prevalent in rural areas than urban locals. To determine water quality, we measured the concentration …

Temporal Prediction Model For Executing Orchestration Functions In Optical Network, Anonymous

Defensive Publications Series

[0001] The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for a temporal prediction model for executing orchestration functions in optical networks. Predictive modeling for provisioning optical services and functions within an optical communication network involves a trained temporal prediction model (“model”). This begins with collecting execution times from each device and interface for various orchestration functions, followed by timing processes at each network element (NE), including issuing, acknowledging, executing commands, and waiting for devices to reach a ready state. The model then establishes correlations between different functions and their provisioning times based on network complexity. Temporal dependencies are recorded between …
