Fisheries Research Report No. 362: Characterising Essential Benthic Habitats And Environmental Drivers Of Fishery Recruitment In The Exmouth Gulf Prawn Managed Fishery, Scott Evans, Nick Konzewitsch, Rachel Marks, Renae Hovey, Gary A. Kendrick, Lynda M. Bellchambers
Fisheries Research Reports
Fisheries management relies on the development and evolution of effective assessment and monitoring techniques that are applicable in a range of fishery contexts (Fletcher et al., 2016; L. M. Robinson et al., 2021). The assessment of fish habitats and environmental drivers that influence recruitment is central to sustainable fisheries management (de Lestang et al., 2010; Galindo-Cortes et al., 2010; Gao & Wang, 2021). Western Australia conducts robust fishery-specific monitoring and assessment programs to ensure the sustainable use of its aquatic resources (Newman et al., 2023). However, few long-term datasets exist that directly monitor critical fish habitats and environmental conditions that …

(R2131) Analysis Of Map/Ph/1 Retrial Inventory Queueing System With Constant Retrial Rate, Bernoulli Vacation, Breakdown, Delayed Repair, Balking, (S, S) Policy And Emergency Replenishment, G. Ayyappan, M. Thilakavathy
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A single server retrial queueing-inventory model is investigated in this study. In Bernoulli vacation, after providing service to the customer, the server may opt to avail vacation or start the service to subsequent customer. During the busy period, breakdown and balking may occur. The inventory is replenished to an (s, S) policy and the replenishing time is assumed to adopt an exponential distribution. Furthermore, assume that an emergency replenishment of one item with zero lead time takes place when the on-hand inventory level decreases to zero. We integrate the emergency replenishment into the system to ensure customer satisfaction. For our …

(R2120) Flexible Group Service Map/Ph/1 Queueing Model With Working Vacation And Optional Service, G. Ayyappan, S. Kalaiarasi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
There are many uses of queues, where services are provided in groups; these types of queues are widely studied in the literature. In this paper we examine a particular queueing model wherein the services are provided in groups and the group size may be less than or equal to the size initially fixed. The arrival follows a Markovian arrival process. The service time of each individual customer follows phase type distribution. The maximum of each customer’s individual service time within a group is defined as the group’s service time. At the service completion moment if there are fewer customers than …

(R2084) Clarification Of Mathematical Criteria For Conservative Forces And Vector Fields With A Point Singularity In Engineering Studies, Nelli Aleksandrova
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The paper deals with a comprehensive analysis of existing mathematical criteria for conservative vector fields including algebraic and geometrical interpretation of Extended Green’s Theorem. Special attention is devoted to the fields containing a point singularity, which represents the primary challenge both in teaching Calculus and in carrying out scientific research in general in computer engineering. Examples of real-world physical fields such as gravitational, electric and magnetic ones are used to appreciate the proposed clarification while teaching various interchangeable disciplines such as mathematics, physics and engineering. Other examples from scientific research literature are provided as well to support the necessity of …

(R2122) Analysis Of Halo Orbits In The Elliptical R3bp With Mass Variation, Majhar Ali, Abdullah .
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The elliptic restricted three-body problem investigates the motion behaviour of the variable mass infinitesimal body under the gravitational forces of the radiated oblate primary and dipole secondary. The equations of motion of the infinitesimal body are determined using Jeans law and Meshcherskii space time transformations. Using the Lindstedt-Poincaré method, we perform the solutions of the equations of motion. With the use of these solutions and the equations of motion, we numerically illustrate the time series, phase spaces, projections and the Halo orbits.

(R2134) Continuous Shooting Approach With Improved Shooting Slope For Solving Higher Integer Order Boundary Value Problem, Razaq Adekola Oderinu, Adebowale Niyi Aderibigbe, Saheed Alao, Ahmed Adeyi Yahaya
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This study presents a semi-analytical shooting method for solving nonlinear higher-order boundary value problems by integrating the Adomian Decomposition Method into the shooting technique, enabling series-form solutions. To enhance convergence, new higher-order shooting slopes and their corresponding supplementary equation formulas were introduced. Three numerical examples demonstrated the method’s accuracy: for the first two, absolute errors were computed using available exact solutions, while the third was compared with reference literature due to the absence of an exact solution. The method achieved very small absolute errors in the first two cases, and results from the third closely matched the literature. Tolerance values—defined …

(R2094) On Mds Bisymmetric Rhotrices Using Self-Dual Bases And Conjugate Elements Of Finite Fields, Shalini Gupta, Ruchi Narang, Manpreet Singh
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Bisymmetric matrices have wide range of applications in statistics, engineering problems, information theory and computer science including coding theory and cryptography. In cryptography, a rhotrix being a couple matrix doubles the security of the cryptosystem. Here, we construct maximum distance separable (MDS) bisymmetric rhotrices using self-dual bases and conjugate elements of finite fields. MDS rhotrices are very crucial for the designing of block ciphers and hash functions in cryptography.
Nonlinear Proudman Resonance Under Moving Atmospheric System, Chunyan Li
Nonlinear Proudman Resonance Under Moving Atmospheric System, Chunyan Li
Faculty Publications
A nonlinear theoretical model with an exact solution is developed to critically examine the Proudman resonance problem. In this framework, a moving atmospheric pressure system forces a wave governed by the square of the wave Froude number (n=F2). Proudman’s classical linear solution, although widely cited, diverges to infinity at resonance (n=1), limiting its physical realism. This work extends the linear regime into the nonlinear by solving the governing equations exactly. The resulting solution remains finite at resonance. The first-order approximation recovers Proudman’s solution, while the second-order approximation already yields a finite resonant response—providing a more accurate and physically …

Pymelt-Px: A Python Script For Modeling Melting Of A Pyroxenite-Peridotite Bilithological Mantle, Ana L. Jimenez Bustos
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The study of oceanic crust formation is a fundamental building block in our understanding of the processes of planetary formation, necessitating an understanding of the melt generation processes that help form oceanic crust. To aid in this purpose, we present pyMeltPX: a bilithological pyroxenite-peridotite mantle modeling script. Although the mantle is primarily comprised of peridotite, pyroxenite is a minor but ubiquitous feature of the mantle and can contribute a disproportionate amount of melt to crustal generation in mid-ocean ridge and ocean island basalt settings. Our model, pyMeltPX, is a python coded, extensible tool based on the Excel calculator by Lambart …

Declined Charge: An Attempt At The Horror Game Genre, Fernando Sepulveda Guizar
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Books and movies are a great medium for people to experience new worlds and experiences through a usually passive method. This can be great for stories with a set story and have all the pieces fall into place as the author intended. Video games on the other hand can give players a more active role in the worlds and stories that they experience. Players have direct control over the player character, and their actions have consequences that may or may not persist throughout the entire game, which is not usually the case with movies or books. This is why horror …

Binary systems are a common site of planet formation, despite the destructive effects of the binary on the disk. While surveys of planet-forming material have found diminished disk masses around binaries with medium separation (∼10–100 au), less is known about tight (< 10 au) binaries, where a significant circumbinary disk may escape the disruptive dynamical effects of the binary. We survey over 100 spectroscopic binaries in the Orion A region with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), detecting significant continuum emission among 21 of them with disk masses ranging from 1 to 100 M⊕. We find evidence of systematically lower disk masses among the binary sample when compared to single-star surveys, which may reflect a diminished planet-forming potential around tight binaries. The infrared excess fraction among the binary sample is comparable to that of single stars, although the tight binaries without significant ALMA emission display tentative evidence of weaker 3–5 …

From Static Prediction To Mindful Machines: A Paradigm Shift In Distributed Ai Systems, Rao Mikkilineni, W. Patrick Kelly
Barowsky School of Business | Faculty Scholarship
A special class of complex adaptive systems—biological and social—thrive not by passively accumulating patterns, but by engineering coherence, i.e., the deliberate alignment of prior knowledge, real-time updates, and teleonomic purposes. By contrast, today’s AI stacks—Large Language Models (LLMs) wrapped in agentic toolchains—remain rooted in a Turing-paradigm architecture: statistical world models (opaque weights) bolted onto brittle, imperative workflows. They excel at pattern completion, but they externalize governance, memory, and purpose, thereby accumulating coherence debt—a structural fragility manifested as hallucinations, shallow and siloed memory, ad hoc guardrails, and costly human oversight. The shortcoming of current AI relative to human-like intelligence is therefore …
The Price Of Priorities: How Human Choices Fuel Climate And Ecological Decline, Keisha Hickman
The Price Of Priorities: How Human Choices Fuel Climate And Ecological Decline, Keisha Hickman
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines the ways in which human priorities and behaviors contribute to the escalating climate crisis and ecological systems. We will first analyze the role of social media in shaping public discourse on climate change and critically evaluate the priorities of institutions that have the means to assist in wildlife conservation. Both speak to the current behaviors of humankind prioritizing their own entertainment over meaningful efforts to mitigate climate change and preserve biodiversity. We will then shift to exploring the profound impact of human population growth and its associated activities on other species and ecosystems. Finally, the thesis will …
Measurement-Based Dynamic Load Model Parameterization Via A Stacked Long Short-Term Memory - Deep Neural Network, Zach H. Smith
Measurement-Based Dynamic Load Model Parameterization Via A Stacked Long Short-Term Memory - Deep Neural Network, Zach H. Smith
All Theses
Increases in distributed generation and changes to predominate load types in modern power systems are driving the need for updated or newly developed dynamic load models. Accurate load modeling is necessary for transmission planning and operation, post-mortem analysis, and inter-regional transfer studies. The most widely used dynamic load model is the WECC Composite Load (CMLD). The CMLD model is an aggregation of substation impedance, under voltage and frequency controls, dynamic motor loads, and static loads. Parameterizing dynamic load models, especially composite models with high parameter counts like the CMLD, is can be difficult. This work proposes a measurement-based, machine learning …
Data-Assimilation-Enabled Fast Convergence Of The Uzawa Scheme For Navier-Stokes Equations With Large Reynolds Numbers, Jessica C. Franklin
Data-Assimilation-Enabled Fast Convergence Of The Uzawa Scheme For Navier-Stokes Equations With Large Reynolds Numbers, Jessica C. Franklin
All Theses
This work studies efficient techniques utilized to solve the Navier-Stokes equations that model incompressible Newtonian flow in the setting where partial solution data is available. First, we analyze the Picard iteration and Picard with continuous data assimilation applied and test convergence. Then, we analyze the Arrow-Hurwicz (AH) and Uzawa iterative procedures and test convergence. Finally, we apply continuous data assimilation to Uzawa, and analytical and numerical results show that CDA improves Uzawa convergence for the NSE, similar to CDA-Picard but it is much more efficient.
A Mixed-Methods Design-Based Research: Study Of Teacher Self-Efficacy And The Implementation Of Social Emotional Learning In The High School Classroom, Avia Brown
Dissertations
The escalating mental health crisis among adolescents, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, positioned schools as critical intervention sites for supporting student well-being (K. McNamara, 2020). However, teacher capacity and self-efficacy in implementing social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies remain significant barriers to effective, sustainable practice. This mixed-methods design-based research study examined the efficacy of professional development and instructional coaching in enhancing teacher self-efficacy and supporting the implementation of SEL competencies in high school classrooms.
The researcher employed a comprehensive, five-stage design thinking framework (empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test) to develop and evaluate a structured eight-week professional development and coaching intervention targeting SEL …

Nonlinear Phase Space Analysis For Anomaly Detection In Ros 2 Communications: Detecting Man-In-The-Middle Attacks In Simulated Environments, William L. Locklier
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
Robot Operating System 2 (ROS 2) marks a significant advancement over its predecessor through the transition from a centralized to a decentralized architecture, integrating the Data Distribution Service (DDS) to support real-time, scalable communications. Despite these improvements, inherent vulnerabilities in the ROS 2 communication stack continue to leave these systems exposed to sophisticated network-based attacks. This study leveraged nonlinear phase space analysis (NLPSA) as an intrusion detection system (IDS) to detect man-in-the-middle (MitM) attack anomalies in ROS 2 traffic. Grounded in Takens’ embedding theorem, NLPSA reconstructs the phase space of communication features and compares the resulting structure against a baseline …
Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Biologically Relevant Interfaces: From Tear Film Lipid Layers To Rna Adsorption On Silica Surfaces., Mahbuba Khanom
Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Biologically Relevant Interfaces: From Tear Film Lipid Layers To Rna Adsorption On Silica Surfaces., Mahbuba Khanom
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is an important tool in biochemical sciences for studying complex molecular processes and interfacial interactions at the molecular level. Biological interfaces play key roles in processes such as ocular lubrication and biomolecular adsorption. This dissertation studies interfacial phenomena involving two distinct yet conceptually related systems: the tear film lipid layer (TFLL) at the air–water interface at the surface of the human eye, and RNA adsorption on silica surfaces. These studies provide insight into how interfacial composition, structure, and environmental conditions affect larger-scale behavior. Atomistic MD simulations were used to model the TFLL. The TFLL is essential …

This research examined how MBP affected both cognitive and non-cognitive components of student learning compared to traditional biology instruction. Existing data collected by Dr. Kathy Malone in collaboration with Ohio State University (2016) were analyzed to study the effectiveness of the MBP. …
Thermal And Non-Thermal Mass Transport Effects In Plasmon-Assisted Electrochemistry., Md Al Amin
Thermal And Non-Thermal Mass Transport Effects In Plasmon-Assisted Electrochemistry., Md Al Amin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Plasmon-assisted electrochemistry has received attention due to its effects of hot charge carriers, photothermal heating, and enhanced electromagnetic field impact on electrochemical transformation. These effects have contributed to lowering the onset potential and increasing the reaction kinetics. Numerous studies have been employed to differentiate the effect of photothermal heating from hot charge carriers on the electrochemical reaction. Most of these studies have been employed to measure and quantify the photothermal heating effects at equilibrium temperature; however, localized heating from the incident light does not result in homogeneous heating across the electrochemical cell. Many studies investigating the photothermal heating effect in …

A Persistent Homology Framework For Scrna-Seq: Assessing Clustering Robustness And Quantifying Preprocessing And Integration Effects On Topological Features., Jonah Daneshmand
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data expands, robust methods for integrating diverse datasets are critical. This dissertation applies Persistent Homology (PH), a technique from Topological Data Analysis (TDA), to a collection of scRNA-seq datasets spanning eight tissue types to quantify how data integration affects topological features and biological interpretability. We assessed global topological structure using Betti curves, Euler characteristics, and persistence landscapes across raw, normalized, and integrated data representations. Our analysis revealed a performance inversion: while conventional methods excelled on unintegrated data, high-granularity topological methods, particularly those sensitive to global data structure, became superior after integration. This suggests a synergy …
Controlling Selectivity In Electrocatalytic Co2 Reduction With An External Magnetic Field., Nawaraj Karki
Controlling Selectivity In Electrocatalytic Co2 Reduction With An External Magnetic Field., Nawaraj Karki
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation describes how to alter the speciation and concentration of molecules at the electrode-electrolyte interface, and how those alterations affect reactivity and selectivity. This dissertation presents two distinct approaches to control the mass transport of neutral molecules such as carbon dioxide (CO2) at the electrode-electrolyte interface by using an external magnetic field. The first finding demonstrates that magnetic fields indirectly affect the mass transport of target analytes such as CO2 molecules by selectively interacting with charged species, such as hydroxide ions (OH-). Such interaction induces magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects, which generate localized hydrodynamic flow and …
