Human Evil (In The Weird), Lucas Ethridge
Human Evil (In The Weird), Lucas Ethridge
University Honors Theses
This paper examines a trending doom in speculative fiction: the post-human age. Many modern works have started to look past human civilization as humans surrender all hope and faith in a climate-doomed world. Honing in on core concepts in Weird fiction, this paper explores human merit through Old and New Weird. A good part spends time establishing the canon, looking at similar patterns across age, philosophy, war and genre. The chief question asks if humankind was ever worth saving.

Learning To Play Drums: Rote Learning Versus Note Approach, Jacob R. Brumback
Learning To Play Drums: Rote Learning Versus Note Approach, Jacob R. Brumback
Masters Theses
The purpose of this qualitative historical study is to determine whether rote-learned drummers perform better than formally trained drummers. The issue is that some drummers may excel by watching and developing aural skills exclusively, while others perform well by only reading sheet music. The goal is to decide if drummers with strong aural skills or those who rely on note-reading performed better. The rationale explained how the applicability of rudiments, complex timing, creative fills, and improvisational soloing skills influences the performances of both rote-learned and note-approach drummers. Data collection methods for this research included oral history traditions and analyzing secondary …
Toward Understanding Multi-Agent Decision Making In Complex Societies, Jonathan Skaggs
Toward Understanding Multi-Agent Decision Making In Complex Societies, Jonathan Skaggs
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates Multi Agent Decision Making (MADM) within Complex Societies (CS), systems of interdependent agents whose collective behaviors emerge from local interactions. Such emergent dynamics are nonlinear and difficult to predict, posing significant challenges towards understanding how individual decisions scale to societal outcomes. Existing approaches often fall short of capturing the combined attributes of CS, including asymmetry, decentralization, and adaptivity. To address this gap, we introduce new models and analyses of agent strategies that explain how cooperation and stability can arise in CS. Structured around three interrelated projects, this dissertation enhances our comprehension of MADM in CS. The research …
Many Elementary Students Lack Opportunities To Develop Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving And Other Essential 21st-Century Skills., Raeanne Sika
Masters Projects
Abstract
Many elementary students have limited opportunities to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills essential for 21st-century learning. Traditional teacher-centered approaches often prioritize memorization over inquiry, leaving young learners underprepared for complex, authentic tasks. Project-based learning (PBL) offers a research-supported alternative, yet teachers often face barriers such as limited preparation, time, and resources.
This project provides a practical solution through a comprehensive professional development (PD) program and PBL implementation toolkit designed for early elementary educators. Grounded in constructivist and social learning theories, the project includes a multi-session PD series, planning templates, instructional supports, and a complete first-grade PBL unit …

The Heterogeneity Of Healthcare And Insurance In The Midwest, William Robb
The Heterogeneity Of Healthcare And Insurance In The Midwest, William Robb
Honors Theses
Background
Healthcare varies in each state from labor and capital to the laws governing the state and the finances they run under. United States citizens have criticized healthcare and call for change as the United States lacks a universal healthcare system. Even with a universal healthcare system, there are systematic issues and a financial downturn that need to be addressed even if it were to be adopted. Half of the counties in the U.S. see a shortage in labor and hospitals leading to a desert for both cases. Funding through the government is unstable and lacks clear and meaningful payments …

Electronics, Computer, and Communications Engineering Faculty Publications
The management of municipal solid waste (MSW) in swiftly urbanizing Philippine cities has emerged as a critical concern in both energy and governance. Dependence on landfills is approaching critical thresholds as disposal sites near saturation, transportation costs escalate, and host communities increasingly resist garbage transfers. In response, this study proposes a comprehensive Waste-to-Energy (WtE) assessment framework that integrates engineering evaluation with policy and stakeholder analysis to support sustainable decision- making.
Using Baguio City as a case study, the framework applies a Triple Bottom Line (TBL) approach to evaluate three waste management scenarios: (1) current landfill-dominated practices, (2) engineered landfill with …
The Study Of Hybrid Nanostructures For Optoelectronics, Alex Davis, Khaoula Dehhou
The Study Of Hybrid Nanostructures For Optoelectronics, Alex Davis, Khaoula Dehhou
Publications and Research
Hybrid nanostructures that combine zero-dimensional (0D) quantum dots (QDs) with two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are promising building blocks for next-generation optoelectronic devices, such as highly sensitive photodetectors, light-emitting diodes, and tunable light sources. These hybrid systems take advantage of the strong, size-dependent emission of colloidal QDs and the high carrier mobility and tunable band structure of 2D materials. In this research, we investigate hybrid structures composed of colloidal CdSe/ZnS, CuInS/ZnS, and PbS QDs integrated with indium selenide (InSe), a TMD known for its exceptional electron mobility and robust photoluminescence in few-layer form. The goal is to understand how interfacial …

Exploring The Relationship Between Loneliness And Real-Time Measurements Of Gsr And Hrv During Concept Mapping, And Cortisol And Oxytocin Levels, Jangwon Seo
Masters Theses
This study attempts to explore loneliness among college students from a bio-physio-psycho-social perspective, and it utilizes real-time physiological measurements (GSR and HRV) and biomarkers (cortisol and oxytocin) in conjunction with psychosocial assessments. The study employs both qualitative and quantitative methods, which involve concept mapping exercises, with the aim of comprehending the full nature of how loneliness interacts with physiological and psychological processes. At Time 1 (T1) we found significant positive correlations between loneliness and elevated GSR levels, which is indicative of increased sympathetic arousal (r = .35, p < .01). Additionally, there were significant negative correlations between loneliness and mean RR intervals in HRV that indicated autonomic dysregulation featured by increased sympathetic activities as well as reduced parasympathetic functions (r = -.28, p < .05). However, at Time 2 (T2), these correlations were not significant indicating possible temporal fluctuations due to adaptive responses or extraneous variables such social support systems or coping mechanisms. The qualitative data from concept mapping enriched the analysis by providing deeper insights into the cognitive and emotional processes underlying loneliness. Despite limitations like demographic skewness, funding constraints, logistical challenges, etc., this, therefore, highlights the need for multidimensional investigations of psychological phenomena. This has implications for future research as well as clinical practice, which could include using these integrative measures to develop holistic interventions for mental health disorders.

Establishing Convergence Thresholds For Pre-Trajectory Sampling With Batched Execution Across Random Quantum Circuits, Taylor L. Eskew, Jerome F. Gonthier, Taylor L. Patti, Andrew N. Jordan
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
A crucial aspect of validating quantum protocols is understanding the noise produced by quantum computing devices. Using simulations that can replicate this noise allows for a lower-cost alternative to hardware experiments. Stochastic, so-called "trajectory" methods are often used as a quadratically reduced approximation to density matrix simulations, but traditional implementations have limited sampling capacity and provide no error-based metadata. The Pre-Trajectory Sampling with Batched Execution (PTSBE) [Patti et al., 2025] algorithm provides a solution by combining fine-tuned, well-documented noise sampling with computational intermediate caching.
While the original work is effective on quantum error correction circuits, its performance on general circuits …

Can Cta-Based Machine Learning Identify Patients For Whom Successful Endovascular Stroke Therapy Is Insufficient?, Jerome A Jeevarajan, Yingjun Dong, Anjan Ballekere, Sergio Salazar Marioni, Arash Niktabe, Rania Abdelkhaleq, Sunil A Sheth, Luca Giancardo
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Background and purpose: Despite advances in endovascular stroke therapy (EST) devices and techniques, many patients are left with substantial disability, even if the final infarct volumes (FIVs) remain small. Here, we evaluate the performance of a machine learning (ML) approach by using pretreatment CTA to identify this cohort of patients that may benefit from additional interventions.
Materials and methods: We identified consecutive subjects with large vessel occlusion (LVO) acute ischemic stroke (AIS) who underwent EST with successful reperfusion in a multicenter prospective registry cohort. We included only subjects with FIV < 30 mL and recorded 90-day outcome (mRS). A deep learning model was pretrained and then fine-tuned to predict 90-day mRS 0-2 by using pretreatment CTA images (DeepsymNet-v3 model pretrained on radiology reports and fine-tuned on detection of unexpected clinical outcomes using brain CTA images [DSN-CTA] model). The primary outcome was the predictive performance of the DSN-CTA model compared with a logistic regression model with clinical variables, measured by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC).
Results: The DSN-CTA model was pretrained on 1542 subjects and …
Probabilistic Deep Learning For Traffic Density Prediction, Pedro Cesar Lopes Gerum, Andrew Reed Benton, Melike Baykal-Gursoy
Probabilistic Deep Learning For Traffic Density Prediction, Pedro Cesar Lopes Gerum, Andrew Reed Benton, Melike Baykal-Gursoy
Business Faculty Publications
Real time, accurate predictions of recurrent and nonrecurrent traffic congestion are essential for optimizing transportation systems and ensuring a smooth user experience. Traditional models often focus on long-term point estimates, limiting their use in scenarios requiring short-term predictions or probabilistic assessments (e.g., traffic signal optimization, dynamic tolling, and emergency response). This study explores probabilistic deep learning (DL) for real time traffic density distribution prediction. This study demonstrates that an adapted multi-quantile recurrent neural network (MQRNN), termed MQRNN-monotonic, outperforms traditional time series methods, particularly when handling nonrecurrent disruptions. A novel loss function is introduced to address quantile crossing issues, ensuring valid …
