The Future Of U.S. Higher Education: Equity Implications Of Shifting Immigration Policies, Research Institute For Social Equity Rise

Research Institute for Social Equity

This report examines the impact of U.S. immigration policies on higher education and international students from 2000 to 2025. It traces five major policy eras, from the post- 9/11 security overhaul and Obama-era expansion to the restrictive turns of 2017–2020 and 2025, and analyzes how shifting regulations have influenced enrollment patterns, economic contributions, and student well-being. Despite hosting more than 1.1 million international students in 2023–2024, the U.S. share of the global student market has fallen from 20% to 16%, underscoring how policy volatility and restrictive measures weaken national competitiveness. Drawing on federal data, scholarly research, and institutional reports, this …

From Diet To Deviance: Exploring The Link Between Eating Habits And Delinquent Behaviors In Early Adolescents, Mingxi Tong Jan 2026

From Diet To Deviance: Exploring The Link Between Eating Habits And Delinquent Behaviors In Early Adolescents, Mingxi Tong

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Theses

This study examines associations between dietary habits and delinquent behaviors among U.S. adolescents, guided by biosocial and social bond theories. Using multilevel logistic regression analysis of 6,274 participants (ages 11-15) from the 2009/10 Health Behavior in School-aged Children survey, the research investigated relationships between four dietary patterns (breakfast consumption, fruit/vegetable intake, sweets consumption, and soft drink consumption) and five delinquent behaviors (bullying perpetration, physical fighting, alcohol use, cannabis use, and tobacco smoking). Results demonstrate partial support for the hypothesis that healthier dietary habits are associated with lower delinquency. Breakfast consumption emerged as a consistent protective factor across all behaviors (7-15% …

The Art Of Giving Good Feedback: How Principals And Other Factors Build Or Break Teacher Efficacy Through Evaluations And Feedback In The Public Elementary School Setting, Kayla Davidson Jan 2026

The Art Of Giving Good Feedback: How Principals And Other Factors Build Or Break Teacher Efficacy Through Evaluations And Feedback In The Public Elementary School Setting, Kayla Davidson

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The aim of this study was to explore how public elementary school teachers experience and interpret principal feedback in relation to their sense of self-efficacy, including how their lived experiences align with Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) ratings. Understanding how feedback shapes teacher confidence may help school leaders design evaluation systems that better support professional growth and retention. In this study, feedback was most influential when it was grounded in direct observation, specific, and delivered within trusting professional relationships, while formal evaluation feedback was often perceived as compliance-oriented and less impactful on teacher confidence. Findings indicated that self-efficacy was …

Family and Community Medicine Faculty Publications

Wastewater testing for SARS-CoV-2 provided useful public health information during the COVID-19 pandemic yet was underutilized in rural communities. We addressed this gap by implementing wastewater surveillance and assessing its performance in 10 communities in Eastern Kentucky. We collected wastewater samples 1–2 times weekly at 10 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) from May 2021 until April 2023 and measured SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations using polymerase chain reaction testing. We calculated time-lagged correlations between wastewater concentrations and county-level reported COVID-19 cases by site. We developed a generalized linear model to estimate COVID-19 incidence from wastewater SARS-CoV-2 concentrations. The 10 participating WWTPs served 2430 …

An Examination Of Potential Mechanisms Underlying Muscle Memory, Santiago González-Quintero Jan 2026

An Examination Of Potential Mechanisms Underlying Muscle Memory, Santiago González-Quintero

Theses & ETDs

"Muscle memory is generally understood as the mechanism that supports the execution of a motor task during retraining following an initial period of both training and detraining. It can be found in the central nervous system where commands are being sent to accomplish a motor task; however, evidence exists for another type of memory within the myofiber itself. Through the analysis of data from animal and human exercise studies, this thesis examines the notion of muscle memory at different locations proximal to and/or within muscle, including the evidence for and feasibility of myonuclear permanence as a mechanism underlying muscle memory. …

Empowering Paraeducators: A Mixed Methods Study Of Targeted Paraeducator Training In Trauma-Informed And Restorative Practices, Amy K. Stevenson Jan 2026

Empowering Paraeducators: A Mixed Methods Study Of Targeted Paraeducator Training In Trauma-Informed And Restorative Practices, Amy K. Stevenson

Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)

This mixed-methods study, grounded in Improvement Science, examines behavioral support provided by paraeducators, sometimes referred to as paraprofessionals, to students who receive special education services. Districts employ paraeducators to implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with a range of disabilities. Often, paraeducators possess limited skills and receive little training to provide effective support to students. Additionally, paraeducators remain among the lowest-paid employees in school districts. Research suggests that targeted professional development, particularly whole-group instruction, followed by coaching, modeling, and feedback, can improve both paraeducator implementation fidelity and student outcomes. Five paraeducators working in a program serving elementary students with …

Limited Data Tomography: Seismic Imaging, Simone Charles Jan 2026

Limited Data Tomography: Seismic Imaging, Simone Charles

Theses & ETDs

The goal of seismic imaging is to recover structures underground via waves emitted from source points and received by sensors. Through the use of the elliptic Radon transform and an approximation to its inverse, images called reconstructions of the underground surfaces can be generated. We delve into some of the theory that allows for images to be made as well as giving reason to why singularities and artifacts appear in the reconstructions. With a known object modeled via a density function, this thesis explores features of reconstructions constructed with a fixed source and discrete receivers. The reconstructions were computed in …

From Sacred Practice To Social Identity: The Historical Evolution Of Vegetarianism Through Religion, Psychology, And Social Norms, Makenna Mae Seymour Jan 2026

From Sacred Practice To Social Identity: The Historical Evolution Of Vegetarianism Through Religion, Psychology, And Social Norms, Makenna Mae Seymour

Honors Theses – Charlotte Campus

This research paper aims to explore how the vegetarian diet has evolved throughout history through lenses of religion and social psychology. Using primary and secondary academic resources, over thirty resources were evaluated, including books and journal articles,  using key words, such as “vegetarian,” “attitudes,” and “social norms.” The beginnings of vegetarianism were established through religious practices, but social norms from families and friends, as well as personal gain reasons, are the driving factors that have maintained the vegetarian diet over time. Vegetarianism began from Pythagoras and his cult in the 600s BC, but it grew once Hinduism and Jainism adopted …

The results reveal the importance of cognitive activation and disciplinary climate as consistent, …

Adsorptive Gas Sensor Response Forecasting To Enable Breath-By-Breath Analysis, Samuel Bellaire, Samir Ahmed Rawashdeh, Kirby P. Mayer, Jamie L. Sturgill Jan 2026

Adsorptive Gas Sensor Response Forecasting To Enable Breath-By-Breath Analysis, Samuel Bellaire, Samir Ahmed Rawashdeh, Kirby P. Mayer, Jamie L. Sturgill

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

MOS gas sensors have proven to be useful in electronic noses, which utilize these sensors to detect volatile organic compounds in human breath to detect various lung diseases. Unfortunately, the long settling time of MOS gas sensors is ill-suited to measuring human breath, where complete breathing cycles are often shorter than 5 s. Existing studies circumvent this limitation by collecting gas samples and injecting them into a sealed chamber to react with the sensors. However, it would be convenient if breath-by-breath analysis could be conducted without the need to store breath samples. To accomplish this, we present a novel forecasting …

Environmental Insurance And Esg: A Mismatch Or An Unlikely Pair?, Mycah Kindle Jan 2026

Environmental Insurance And Esg: A Mismatch Or An Unlikely Pair?, Mycah Kindle

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

Environmental insurance is something that is becoming increasingly important in the corporate sphere. Similarly, there has been an uproar in the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) movement. ESG ratings are becoming the norm in corporate America as a way to quickly assess a corporation through using a variety of factors. This Note will argue that a company’s ESG rating should be a main consideration when insurers are underwriting their environmental insurance policies. This Note will argue that by linking a company’s ESG ratings with their environmental insurance, it may lead to more sustainable practices and accountability from corporate America.

Solving High-Dimensional Differential Equations Using Recurrent And Residual Neural Network Architectures, Hind Khaled Kolaib Jan 2026

Solving High-Dimensional Differential Equations Using Recurrent And Residual Neural Network Architectures, Hind Khaled Kolaib

Knowledge Engineering and Data Science

High-dimensional Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) form the foundation of complex process modeling in various scientific and engineering applications, including finance, physics, and optimal control. However, classical numerical methods are adversely affected by the curse of dimensionality, making them inapplicable for large-scale problems. Recently, however, deep learning-based approaches have provided a new toolbox for these high-dimensional PDEs, including methods such as the Deep Backward Stochastic Differential Equation (Deep BSDE) method. Our approach draws on a more sophisticated deep learning backbone, using neural networks (in our case, a Residual Neural Network and a Long Short-Term Memory network (LSTM) integrated into the Deep …

Holistics And Foundations Of Culture-Space Economics Holistics And Foundations Of Culture-Space Economics Volume I Holistics And Foundations Of Culture-Space Economics: Volume I, Victor L. Tonn

Faculty and Staff - Ebooks

Situated in the light of holistics and its various formulations of systrix, this book advances a series of frontier lectures on culture–space economics, ultimately grounded in the mutual economy. It develops a coherent framework of wealth creation and accumulation coupled with humane distribution, through which the economic mechanisms of twenty-first-century earth–space transformations are explored. Beyond this theoretical inquiry, the book engages in an in-depth analysis of hegemonic competition between Type I and Type II economies (in abstraction, China and the United States), with the broader aim of discerning conditions conducive to enduring universal peace.

Impacts Of Management Practices And Soil Properties On Free-Living Nitrogen Fixation In Eastern South Dakota, Laura Galvan Nuevo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Free-living nitrogen (N) fixation (FLNF) may represent a sustainable pathway to supplement crop N demand in agroecosystems, yet edaphic and management factors regulating this process under field conditions remain poorly understood in the Northern Great Plains. Using 15N2 direct method to quantify potential FLNF (pFLNF) and baseline FLNF (bFLNF), this thesis investigates how crop rotations (2-, 3-, and 4-year systems), tillage management (conventional vs. no-till), cover cropping, and soil properties affect the potential of free-living diazotrophs to supply N via FLNF in a long-term no-till corn-based system in Southeastern South Dakota. A two-year field study evaluated pFLNF across four growing …

Ai Vs. Genai: Combating Llm Generated Prescription Fraud With Transformer Based Detection Models, Ankitha Vokkaleri Shankarappa

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

The rapid evolution of Large Language Models (LLMs) has introduced a sophisticated new vector for healthcare fraud: the generation of high-fidelity, synthetic medical prescriptions. Traditional fraud detection systems, which rely on rule-based engines and basic statistical anomalies, are increasingly ill-equipped to identify these AI-generated forgeries that mimic the structural and clinical logic of authentic records. This thesis presents a robust detection framework using Transformer-based architectures to distinguish between human-authored Medicare Part D prescriptions and fully synthetic records generated by GPT-4.

The research was conducted across two distinct phases: an initial pilot study using 4,000 samples and a rigorous validation stress …

Elucidating The Results Of Multiple Linear Regression: A Systematic Literature Review And Monte Carlo Comparative Simulation Study Of Relative Importance Methodologies, Oscar Gaytan

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

Theory-supported multiple linear regression models are often formed to assess the impact of HR practices on organizational performance and other desired outcomes. Several methods are available to determine which predictors contribute most to said outcomes. However, researchers may make agential cuts in the method selection phase, with their histories, experiences, or perspectives on relative importance measures influencing their decisions. When multiple measures are employed, discordant results leave room for differing interpretations, potentially leading to suboptimal guidance. Correlation-Adjusted coRrelations (CAR) scores offer a unique alternative to established relative importance methodologies. However, a systematic literature review indicated that no large-scale comparison of …

In Situ Observations Of Thermal Ions In Perturbed Ionospheres: Techniques And Results, Magdalina Louise Moses Jan 2026

In Situ Observations Of Thermal Ions In Perturbed Ionospheres: Techniques And Results, Magdalina Louise Moses

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Prediction and mitigation of space weather events are active research topics that require knowledge of the physics governing the ionosphere. Sounding rockets can be used to make in situ observations. The Lynch Rocket Lab created the Petite-Ion-Probe (PIP), a small retarding potential analyzer, to measure thermal ion parameters (i.e., ion density and temperature). A PIP's raw data consists of a series of measured anode currents as a function of screen bias voltages, called IV curves. PIPs can be integrated onto a sounding rocket’s main payload and/or be deployed from the rocket on small platforms called ``PIP-Bobs''. Note that as the …
