Preferential fluid flow remains a major challenge in subsurface energy production and gas storage operations, resulting in excessive water production in mature oil fields, reduced heat extraction in geothermal reservoirs, and low sweep and storage efficiency in CO2-EOR projects. Polymer gels are widely used to mitigate high-permeability channels; however, conventional systems exhibit limited plugging efficiency and short lifetimes in ultra-high-temperature reservoirs due to poor thermal stability. This study presents a novel ultra-high-temperature-resistant preformed particle gel (UHT-PPG) developed for conformance control in reservoirs with temperatures of 150–275 °C and severe super-K or channeling problems. The material was evaluated in …

The performance of starch-based biofuel cells is fundamentally limited by inefficient utilization of the fuel's inherent energy density. Sequential oxidation of carbohydrate fuels, such as glucose, the monomeric unit of starch, using minimal catalyst systems has therefore emerged as a promising strategy to improve biofuel cell efficiency. Here, we extend a previously reported three-catalyst, organic–enzymatic glucose oxidation cascade to polymeric carbohydrate fuels by integrating enzymatic starch depolymerization with downstream electrochemical oxidation. To our knowledge, this represents the first demonstration of a defined hybrid organic–enzymatic cascade designed to drive progression of starch-derived glucose equivalents toward terminal oxidation using a minimal catalyst …

Nitrate in groundwater should be treated as a nitrogen source rather than a contaminant. Biohybrid technologies coupling microbial selectivity with renewable electro(photo)chemical energy offer opportunities to convert nitrate to value-added ammonium, although challenges remain in scalability, microbial stability, material–microbe integration, process engineering, regulatory compliance, and economic feasibility.

A Steiner coset partition of a group G with respect to pairwise distinct subgroups H1 , …, Hr is a collection of pairwise disjoint cosets g1 H1 , …, gr Hr whose union is G. Motivated by the Herzog–Schönheim Conjecture, we have recently started exploring the groups that admit Steiner coset partitions. In previous work, we completely classified such groups for up to r = 4 mutually commuting subgroups. In this paper, we extend the classification to r = 5 mutually commuting subgroups.

Public schools face significant challenges, including rising student behavioral needs, chronic absenteeism, and high rates of teacher burnout. These issues are interconnected with and inextricably linked to a need for effective, evidence-based behavioral supports. Educators frequently enter the field lacking the necessary skills and training to manage complex student behavior, often resulting in a reliance on punitive practices that exacerbate problems.
This paper proposes that the expertise of school-based behavior analysts (SBBAs), who are Board Certified Behavior Analysts® (BCBAs®) specializing in education, offers a powerful, underutilized solution. SBBAs are trained in applied behavior analysis (ABA), a data-driven science focused on …

A Data-Driven Framework For Automation Readiness In Minnesota State University, Mankato Course Scheduling, Prisca Bongu Payanzo Maba
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
University course scheduling is one of the most complex optimization problems in higher education institutions. With universities growing in size and offering a broad spectrum of majors and disciplines, the number of possible course scheduling combinations increases exponentially, rendering traditional ways of scheduling ineffective.
Although operations research has extensively studied automated scheduling algorithms, there has been limited investigations into the organization readiness of academic departments to implement such systems. This paper offers a hybrid data science framework that assesses departmental readiness for scheduling automation.
The study combines qualitative Zoom interview data from 19 academic departments with institutional scheduling rules from …

Partially Penalized Anisotropic Trilinear Ife-Pic Methods For Dc Plasma Transport Problems, Jiahui Li, Guangqing Xia, Yajie Han, Ziping Wang, Chang Lu, Xiaoming He
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Implicit and hybrid particle-in-cell methods are widely used for efficient simulation of DC discharge plasma transport. However, their computations require solving anisotropic elliptic equations and face challenges related to mesh geometry, non-axisymmetry, and complex interfaces. Moreover, the accuracy of particle trajectories is critical for plasma etching and erosion studies, where errors near interfaces can significantly impact simulation results. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a three-dimensional anisotropic trilinear partially penalized immersed finite element (ATPPIFE) method, which captures interfaces on Cartesian meshes and effectively reduces discontinuities at interface element faces, ensuring that particle trajectories better align with real-world behavior. Urban Effects On Cloud Formation, Boundary Layer Circulation, And Rainfall Over Miami, Aaron A. Serre
Theses
The sensitivity of cloud and precipitation formation is expected to be enhanced over urban areas due to persistent sea-breeze forcing. This study combines surface observations, satellite data, and numerical modeling to investigate the impacts of urbanization in the Miami Metropolitan Region (MMR) on surface meteorology, cloud formation, and precipitation. Satellite observations reveal urban expansion of approximately 348 km², along the western boundary of the MMR. These areas also exhibit statistically significant increases in land surface and air temperatures. Geostationary satellite data show enhanced morning cloud formation over the MMR, while increasing rainfall and interannual variability in cloudiness are observed along …

Inflex : A Scalable Framework For Malware Analysis, Correlation, And Steganography Detection, Luke Bower
Theses
Modern malware campaigns operate in stages across diverse formats, including PE, ELF, shellcode, and malicious documents, some leveraging steganography to deliver payloads such as Quasar RAT and Lokibot. Because analysis tooling remains siloed by artifact type, analysts struggle to identify shared code reuse, behavioral overlap, and campaign relationships when adversaries avoid traditional indicators. This thesis presents INFLEX, a framework that normalizes diverse artifacts through a unified pipeline combining static analysis, emulated behavioral extraction, sandbox execution, and threat intelligence enrichment. Its correlation layer introduces Variant Resilient Function Hashing (VRFH), validated against fuzzy hashing baselines on targeted samples, and Weighted Artifact Fusion …

Research is finding that exposure to early math during the baby and toddler stages is valuable for their later mathematical outcomes; however, what this looks like in practice has had relatively limited exploration. In response, this study provides insight into the presence of early math precursors (foundational pre-mathematical skills such as attribute, comparison, change, patterns), as detailed by Hynes-Berry, Chen, & Abel, in six public library storytimes for babies and toddlers. This qualitative descriptive study consisted of naturalistic observations and deductive and inductive coding of video-recorded storytimes. Participants included six library educators, 63 babies and toddlers, and 61 caregivers. The …

Grado en Diseño de Interiores
PULSE was created to overturn the exclusivity of Serrano Street, creating a "third space" for musical creation where culture stops being a privilege of consumption and therefore becomes a universal and free right of access. The foundation of a music center at 130 Serrano Street in Madrid, addresses a urban paradox: a high density of young people with a complete lack of freely accessible social infrastructure and space. Located at the heart of a "Student Hub" due to the academic activity of IE University and the CSIC (Spanish National Research Council), the area around the Casa de Villora attracts many …

Modeling And Identification Of Thermal Interactions In Lithium-Ion Battery Modules, Saima Alam
Theses
The recent development of lithium-ion battery technology has fueled its adoption in electric vehicles (EVs) as the primary power source due to its high energy and power density. However, the high energy density comes at the cost of higher safety requirements. To ensure the lithium-ion battery pack's operational safety, performance optimization, and longevity, a Battery Management System (BMS), an electronic controller, is employed. Recent reports of battery pack overheating, fire, and explosion in EVs expose the limitations of the BMS in detecting the abnormalities and preventing them from propagating to other cells. To address these limitations, in the first part …

Deep Joint Source-Channel Coding For Semantic-Aware Adaptive Wireless Image Transmission, Sudipto Das Suvro
Theses
The growing use of AI-enabled applications has increased the demand for adaptive, efficient, and low-latency image transmission of large data volumes. This has created challenges for conventional separate source-channel coding that focuses on reliable bit sequence transmission without considering the contents or communication objectives. Deep joint source-channel coding (DeepJSCC) potentially solves this by combining source compression and error correction into a unified process. This thesis focuses on developing adaptive and computationally lightweight DeepJSCC-based transceivers for image transmission across heterogeneous channels. The framework further investigates DeepJSCC’s performance in OFDM with robust channel estimation and importance-based subcarrier allocation strategies. Comprehensive evaluation using …

Bridging The Gap: A Systematic Review Of Cyber Conflict Forecasting Models And The Case For Ai-Driven Dynamic Frameworks, Salim Arfaoui, Youssef Harrath, Omar El-Gayar
Research & Publications
Cyber conflict forecasting remains constrained by static models that overlook the integration of geopolitical context with technical indicators. This systematic literature review examines 58 studies (2010–2025) using PRISMA guidelines and an Input-Process-Output framework to classify approaches and identify key gaps. Quantitative methods dominate (67%), yet only 14% incorporate geopolitical variables, despite the political nature of cyber conflict. Major limitations include adversarial adaptation blindness (85% assume static behavior), coarse temporal granularity (72% use daily+ intervals), lack of uncertainty quantification (75%), and minimal modeling of cross-domain escalation (92% cyber-only focus). Strategic forecasting is rare, with just 14% providing long-term insights and 16% …

Research & Publications
Thematic analysis is a qualitative research method used to identify and interpret patterns in textual data. However, it can be time-consuming and challenging to replicate. While recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) and generative AI have enhanced thematic analysis, existing methods often rely on prompt-based interactions and require significant human intervention. This paper introduces an agentic AI framework comprising autonomous, goal-directed agents powered by LLMs to perform inductive thematic analysis with minimal human input. We evaluate the framework using a dataset from a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) mobile app and compare the results with those from Latent Dirichlet Allocation …

Multimodal Late-Fusion Of Radiomics, Clinical Data, And Demographics Enhances Personalized Survival Prediction In Nsclc, Zarindokht Helforoush, Mohamed Jaber, Nezamoddin N. Kachouie
Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications
Backgrounds/Objectives: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) exhibits substantial prognostic heterogeneity that is not fully captured by conventional anatomical staging, highlighting the need for individualized risk assessment. Radiomics enables non-invasive characterization of tumor phenotype, yet high dimensionality and inter-feature correlations often limit model stability and interpretability. Methods: To address these challenges, we developed a multimodal late-fusion framework integrating radiomic, clinical, and demographic information to predict patient-specific absolute risk in the Lung1 cohort (N = 398). Radomic features (N = 107) were extracted from primary tumor volumes and refined using a Group Lasso–penalized Cox model, preserving biological coherence and producing a parsimonious …

Development Of The Core Lit Apparatus For Seaweed Hatcheries (Clash) Bioreactor Using A Germplasm Approach, Phillip O. Tahimic
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
In comparison to the Asian aquaculture industry, the United States has minimal seaweed production. There are several drivers of the limited industry in the US, such as regulatory constraints and limited market demand, but the ability to scale is a considerable barrier to commercialization. One possible solution is the development of land-based systems that integrate bioreactors, which utilize fewer resources and do not wholly rely on an oceanic flow-through system. This study assessed the application of a modular bioreactor, known as Core Lit Apparatus for Seaweed Hatcheries (CLASH), as a nursery system and open-source project designed to expand land-based seaweed …

Land Cover Classification Using Optimized Imagery Resolution And Machine Learning Algorithms For A Long-Term Monitoring And Restoration Project, Jessica R. Suoja
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Ecosystem services and functions are prone to water resource exploitation resulting in cascading effects that include decrease of biodiversity and loss of riparian vegetation, a keystone habitat in desert riparian ecosystems. Mono Lake is a prime example of overexploitation of water resources leading to legal action and eventually a legally mandated long-term monitoring and restoration project. Monitoring and restoration projects can benefit from techniques such as remote sensing and machine learning algorithms to generate accurate land cover classification maps for calculating land cover change over time. However, the spatial resolution of remote sensing imagery and the machine learning algorithms chosen …

Geochemical And Petrological Observations Of The June Lake Basalt, Eastern California, Daniel Jacob Abel
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The June Lake basalt is a monogenetic cinder cone and 11-km-long lava flow in eastern California located ~10 km NW of the Long Valley caldera. The stratigraphic position of the June Lake basalt between Tahoe and Tioga glacial deposits suggests an eruption age of only ~20-45ka. This age places the June Lake Basalt among the youngest volcanic eruptions in the Long Valley-Mono Basin region, where volcanic activity spans from the late Pliocene to the Holocene. The goal of this study is to use field observations coupled with whole-rock and crystal geochemical analyses to investigate the magma source and pre-eruption magma …
