Journal of Sustainable Mining

Underground mine ventilation is crucial for ensuring worker safety, air quality, and operational efficiency. Effective optimization of ventilation systems reduces energy consumption, enhances airflow distribution, and minimizes risks associated with harmful gases and fire hazards. This study proposed an integrated framework combining the Hardy Cross (HC) method, Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, and machine learning (ML) techniques to optimize the ventilation system at the Jabal Sayid mine in Saudi Arabia. The HC method was employed to provide deterministic baseline airflow calculations, while the MC simulations accounted for uncertainties in resistance values and environmental conditions, generating probabilistic distributions of key parameters. Among …

BAU Journal - Science and Technology

In this article, we consider the Lord-Shulman porous-elastic system with dissipation due to microtemperature effects. First, we show that the system is exponentially stable provided that the new stability number X=0. Otherwise, we prove the lack of exponential stability under the assumption X≠0. Furthermore, in the last case, we show that the solution decays polynomially.

Electronic Structure With Rovibrational Calculation For The Molecule Ali, Including The Spin-Orbit Coupling Effect, Hana Abdelnabi, Ghassan Younes, Dunia Houlla, Mahmoud Korek

BAU Journal - Science and Technology

The adiabatic potential energy curves for the lowest singlet and triplet electronic states in the representations 2S+1Λ+/- and Ω(+/-) (with and without spin-orbit coupling) of the molecule AlI have been computed by using the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) with multireference configuration interaction (MRCI+Q) method. The spectroscopic constants ωe, Re, Be, and Te have been calculated. Using the canonical quantum mechanics approach, the rovibrational constants Ev, Bv, Dv, Rmin, and Rmax were calculated for the low-lying electronic states with and without spin-orbit coupling. A comparison between our calculated values and those available in the literature reveals excellent agreement.

Psychotherapy Technique And Emotional Communication: The Relationship Between Technique Use In Psychotherapy And Patient Speech Styles Associated With The Referential Process, Sorrel Johnson M.S. Jan 2026

Psychotherapy Technique And Emotional Communication: The Relationship Between Technique Use In Psychotherapy And Patient Speech Styles Associated With The Referential Process, Sorrel Johnson M.S.

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Linguistic analysis is a growing field within psychotherapy process research. Computerized measures have been developed to quantify qualities of speech associated with the Referential Process (RP), a construct describing the way in which people communicate emotional experience by cycling through different language styles (Bucci, 2021c). The three phases of RP are arousal, referential activity (RA), and reflection/reorganizing (R/R). Examining the latter two, the current study aimed to determine if therapists’ use of techniques was associated with immediate levels of patient RA and R/R in a sample of three archival psychotherapy sessions. Sessions were coded moment-by-moment (N=263 therapist speech turns) for …

Size Discrimination In Goldfish (Carassius Auratus), Johnna Patrick Jan 2026

Size Discrimination In Goldfish (Carassius Auratus), Johnna Patrick

Theses & ETDs

Quantitative abilities in fish have been previously observed, including in natural behaviors such as shoaling and various laboratory tasks. Two-choice visual discrimination tasks require individuals to differentiate between stimuli, and when conditioned, individuals can demonstrate learning of stimulus value. The concept of understanding ordinal relationships has been reported in goldfish (Carassius auratus) before, although no studies have explicitly tested primarily size discrimination. The current study tested four goldfish on their ability to perceive and swim through large vs. small holes, using an adapted methodology and expansion of similar literature. It also tested what the goldfish were learning during the discrimination …

Brilliance Bias In Generative Ai, Juliana Shihadeh Jan 2026

Brilliance Bias In Generative Ai, Juliana Shihadeh

Engineering Ph.D. Theses

Generative AI models, like Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and GPT have been shown to reinforce harmful biases, often perpetuating outdated and discriminatory stereotypes. This thesis examines a largely overlooked bias in AI systems: Brilliance Bias. By age six, many children begin to internalize the damaging notion that intellectual brilliance is a male trait — a belief that persists into adulthood.

This thesis consists of three studies that assess brilliance bias in generative AI. The first explores the behavior of popular text-to-image models when given intelligence-based prompts such as “brilliant” and “genius.” In particular, we seek to explore whether the models produce …

Universal Sound Separation: Distance-Aware Mixture Simulation, Co-Occurrence Conditioning, And Chain-Of-Inference, Wonjun Park Jan 2026

Universal Sound Separation: Distance-Aware Mixture Simulation, Co-Occurrence Conditioning, And Chain-Of-Inference, Wonjun Park

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Universal Sound Separation (USS) -- the task of disentangling arbitrary sound sources from a single-channel acoustic mixture -- remains an open challenge due to the ill-posed nature of the problem and the distributional gap between synthetic training data and real-world recordings. This thesis addresses three distinct bottlenecks in the USS pipeline: training data realism, inference strategy, and conditioning richness. We first present two knowledge-guided approaches to sound source separation. The first is a distance-aware mixing strategy that leverages Large Language Models (LLMs) to assign plausible loudness relationships between audio sources during training data synthesis. By querying an LLM about the …

Confronting The “Green” Discourse Of Librarianship, Michael Kirby Jan 2026

Confronting The “Green” Discourse Of Librarianship, Michael Kirby

Publications and Research

Set against the backdrop of resurgent right-wing populism and drawing on Sam Popowich’s critique of democratic discourse in librarianship, this article outlines a crisis of imagination within liberal climate activism—particularly its essentially unquestioned commitment to “green growth,” or the notion that economic expansion can continue indefinitely alongside ecological sustainability. The American Library Association (ALA), despite its progressive public image, uncritically promotes these same market-oriented solutions to climate change and aligns itself with international treaties such as the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, both of which are grounded in growth-centric frameworks and market mechanisms like carbon credits. These frameworks and …

Data-Driven Prediction Of Concrete Bridge Deck Corrosion Using Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr), Nafisa Shafiullah

Civil Engineering Theses

Corrosion detection remains a crucial factor in the proper maintenance of Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures. While several studies have used Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for corrosion detection, quantitative models for prediction are still limited. This study presents an approach for the quantitative prediction of rebar corrosion in concrete using GPR data obtained from a prior experimental program involving accelerated corrosion. A total of 36 RC samples were cast, varying in cover depth, rebar diameter, and concrete porosity. The samples were subjected to an impressed current of 0.65 A in a 5% NaCl solution over three phases: 10, 20, and 30 …

Examining The Paradoxical Effects Of Benevolent Sexism, Serena Rose Bonomo Jan 2026

Examining The Paradoxical Effects Of Benevolent Sexism, Serena Rose Bonomo

Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-

Benevolent sexism can be flattering on the surface, though is based on and perpetuates the same stereotypes as hostile sexism (Glick & Fiske, 1996; 1997). Research has demonstrated benevolent sexism exposure increases body shame in adult women, however this effect remains largely unexplained. The current study investigated the mediating effects of self-objectification (viewing oneself as an object) and system justification beliefs (believing that society is just and fair) to explain the positive relationship between exposure to benevolent sexism and body shame. Using an experimental paradigm, this study exposed a sample of adult women in the United States (N = 152) …

Elli’S Liquid Flow In A Wavy Channel With Slip Effect, Wall Properties, And Heat Transfer, P. Devaki, Yatin Sood Jan 2026

Elli’S Liquid Flow In A Wavy Channel With Slip Effect, Wall Properties, And Heat Transfer, P. Devaki, Yatin Sood

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The dual behavior of Elli’s fluid motivated us to work on it. The fluid behaves as both Newtonian/ non-Newtonian based on the low and high shear rates, respectively. The paper focused on the flow of Ellis fluid in a peristaltic channel with wall properties and heat transfer. The channel is symmetric in nature, and slip conditions are considered near the elastic walls. The governing equations of the flow are solved analytically using suitable boundary conditions, which yield velocity and temperature functions. The novelty of the paper is to analyze the nature of Newtonian/non-Newtonian fluids under the same conditions so that …

The Kids Are Alright: A Preliminary Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of A Microaggression Training Series For Adolescents, Brea M. Banks, Bianca Sierra, Khyati Verma, Giselle Rivera

Faculty Publications – Psychology

Microaggressions are identity-based indignities that lead to significant negative consequences for receivers. Although most research has focused on the microaggressive experiences of adults, adolescents experience these transgressions in schools, and they find these experiences offensive. As such, preparing high school students to address microaggressions when they receive or witness them and to respond appropriately when they receive feedback about their microaggressive behaviour is imperative. Using a quasi-experimental design, we conducted a preliminary investigation of the effectiveness of a microintervention training for adolescents at a high school in the Midwestern United States. The intervention was effective in producing improvement in assessed …

Sharp Polynomial Decay For Polynomially Singular Damping On The Torus, Perry Kleinhenz, Ruoyu P.T. Wang Jan 2026

Sharp Polynomial Decay For Polynomially Singular Damping On The Torus, Perry Kleinhenz, Ruoyu P.T. Wang

Faculty Publications – Mathematics

We study energy decay rates for the damped wave equation with unbounded damping, without the geometric control condition. Our main decay result is sharp polynomial energy decay for polynomially controlled singular damping on the torus. We also prove that for normally Lp-damping on compact manifolds, the Schrödinger observability gives p-dependent polynomial decay, and finite time extinction cannot occur. We show that polynomially controlled singular damping on the circle gives exponential decay.

Reflection Hoes Recorded On Photopolymerisable Glass Layers: A Step Towards Holographic Mirrors For Ar Technologies, David Ma, Suzanne Martin, Mohamed Oubaha, Tatsiana Mikulchyk

Conference Papers

Reflection Holographic Optical Elements (HOEs) offer a great potential for Augmented Reality (AR) display technologies due to their unique capability to redirect light with the predetermined wavelength in the opposite direction to the reconstructing light. AR displays based on HOEs enable a large variety of potential applications which necessitates the development of HOEs with long-term stable performance in challenging ambient conditions. Here, we present a study of the holographic recording capability of a photopolymerizable hybrid sol-gel (PHSG) which has shown to be a robust and water/temperature resistant material. Using optimal recording conditions, diffraction efficiency up to 18% has been achieved …

A. Vs. I In Ai: Is There A Threshold To "Engineered" Intelligence?, Joshit Mohanty Jan 2026

A. Vs. I In Ai: Is There A Threshold To "Engineered" Intelligence?, Joshit Mohanty

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Despite artificial intelligence reshaping the world, its development generates uncertainties regarding future capabilities. AI simultaneously exists as an artifact of engineering design and as autonomous intelligence, creating an observer-participant feedback loop. This paper proposes that embodied AI faces a bandwidth-limited intelligence threshold T_h that it arises from B = min(C_sens,C_Act). However, Shannon capacity measures bits while intelligence operates on concepts, necessitating a dual-channel model separating physical bandwidth B_io from representational capacity B_rep. Intelligence emerges as multi-dimensional rather than scalar, with components exhibiting different bandwidth dependencies. Surpassing T_h requires either new sensing methods expanding B, enhanced representational frameworks, or reconceptualization within …

Brightness And Distance Of The Stars: Phone And Phyphox, Larry Browning, Kay Cutler Jan 2026

Brightness And Distance Of The Stars: Phone And Phyphox, Larry Browning, Kay Cutler

Astronomy Activities

How bright a star appears to an observer on earth and what color or colors make up its light can tell a lot about a star. The brightness offers a clue to how far away a star is. The color indicates how hot the star is. Together they may suggest the size of a star. Examining the details of the star light with a spectroscope shows the various colors that come from the star and indicates the very specific colors that are muted or missing, as well as those that are brighter than expected (absorption and emission spectra). This gives …

Teacher's Use Of Google Classroom, David Hodgin

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the teachers’ use of features in Google Classroom and the factors influencing their integration, using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as the theoretical framework. Learning management systems like Google Classroom are commonplace in modern classrooms. A significant gap remains in understanding whether educators move beyond basic administrative functions to use features that support higher-order pedagogical goals, such as collaboration and differentiation. This study used a quantitative-based survey that sampled pre-pandemic K-12 educators, which examined external variables such as demographic, professional, training, and technology use, along with TAM constructs – perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, social influence, …

Parameter-Free Determination Of Au Nanorod Dimensions Using Depolarized Dls And Genetic Optimization, Nehal Nupnar, Geofrey Nyabere, Claire M.B. Bolding, Kiril A. Streletzky, Michael J.A. Hore

Physics Faculty Publications

Gold nanorods (AuNRs) have received considerable attention for their distinctive optical properties and well-defined, low-polydispersity dimensions. These characteristics position them as promising candidates for diverse applications in imaging, sensing, and treating diseases. However, accurate characterization of AuNRs in their native solution state, which is crucial to many applications, presents many challenges─especially if AuNRs are coated with surface layers (e.g., surfactants or grafted polymers). When applied to AuNRs with functionalized surfaces, common techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle scattering, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) can present limitations such as small sample sizes, the inability to detect light elements, a …
