Identifying And Overcoming Some Operational Limitations Of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces In 5g And Beyond Wireless Networks, Souvik Deb

Doctoral Theses

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) can dynamically reshape the propagation environment to enhance signal strength, spectral efficiency and reliability in 5th generation (5G) cellular as well as device to device (D2D) communications. However, to reap such benefits, a range of practical and operational challenges need to be addressed for effectively utilizing RIS in realistic urban environments. This includes maintaining line of sight (LoS) between the RIS and the communicating devices for reliable signal reflection in millimeter wave (mmWave) communication, reducing high channel estimation overhead for communication using multipath rich channels and preventing violation of strict latency constraints due to high complexity …

Simulated Complex Cells Contribute To Object Recognition Through Representational Untangling, Mitchell B Slapik, Harel Z Shouval Jan 2026

Simulated Complex Cells Contribute To Object Recognition Through Representational Untangling, Mitchell B Slapik, Harel Z Shouval

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The visual system performs a remarkable feat: it takes complex retinal activation patterns and decodes them for object recognition. This operation, termed "representational untangling," organizes neural representations by clustering similar objects together while separating different categories of objects. While representational untangling is usually associated with higher-order visual areas like the inferior temporal cortex, it remains unclear how the early visual system contributes to this process-whether through highly selective neurons or high-dimensional population codes. This article investigates how a computational model of early vision contributes to representational untangling. Using a computational visual hierarchy and two different data sets consisting of numerals …

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study an integrable Camassa–Holm (CH) type equation with quadratic nonlinearity. The CH type equation is shown integrable through a Lax pair, and particularly the equation is found to possess a new kind of peaked soliton (peakon) solution – called rogue peakon, that is given in a rational form with some logarithmic function, but not a regular traveling wave. We also provide multi-rogue peakon solutions. Furthermore, we discuss the local well-posedness of the solution in the Besov space 𝐵𝑠𝑝,𝑟 with 1 ≤ p, r ≤ ∞, 𝑠 >max⁡{1+1/𝑝,3/2} or 𝐵3/22,1 , and then prove the ill-posedness …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Bounded count data are commonly encountered in environmental studies. This paper examines two environmental applications illustrating their relevance. The first investigates the effect of winter malnutrition on mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) fawn mortality. The second application analyzes public perceptions of environmental issues using data from the Eurobarometer 95.1 survey (March–April 2021), which includes a question rating the perceived severity of climate change on a scale from 1 to 10. Together, these studies demonstrate the need for flexible bounded count models in environmental research. In this context, the binomial and beta-binomial (BB) models are widely used for bounded count data, with …

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mountain glaciers are disappearing rapidly, and with their disappearance, we may be losing unstudied biodiversity and genetic resources. A variety of habitats for microorganisms exist on glaciers, especially within pockets of supraglacial sediments (cryoconite) that support high levels of biological activity and diversity. We used biogeochemical approaches, high-throughput DNA sequencing, and microscopy to describe the biogeochemistry and microbial communities of supraglacial sediments on the Dinwoody Glacier in the Wind River Range, Wyoming. Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) concentrations were high, and C:N ratios were close to the Redfield ratio indicating active nutrient cycling. We found unique microbial communities in sediments …

We present James Webb Space Telescope/Mid-Infrared Instrument imaging of eight nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the GATOS (Galactic Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey) survey to investigate the physical conditions of extended dust in their narrow-line regions (NLRs). In four galaxies (ESO 428–G14, NGC 4388, NGC 3081, and NGC 5728), we detect spatially resolved dust structures extending ∼100–200 pc along the NLR. In these systems, we find a strong link between the morphology of the dust, the radio ejecta, and the coronal [Si VI] emission, implying that dust carries imprints of the processes shaping the NLR. Using spatially resolved …

Nonresonance For Problems Involving (P, Q)-Laplacian Equations With Nonlinear Perturbations, E. Lopera, Nsoki Mavinga, D. Sánchez

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

We are concerned with the existence of solutions of (p, q)-Laplacian problems that include nonlinear perturbation terms in both the differential equations and the boundary. Using variational methods and critical point theory, we prove the existence of weak solutions for the nonlinear problem when the nonlinearities involved remain asymptotically below the infimum of the set of eigenvalues of the (p, q)-Laplacian problem with weights and a spectral parameter present in both the differential equation and the boundary. Additionally, we establish an existence result for the nonlinear problem when the nonlinearities involved remain asymptotically below …

The ‘French flag’ model has long served as the prevailing framework for explaining how morphogen gradients generate spatial domains during embryonic development. However, recent evidence indicates that many tissues establish patterns by translating the sequential activation of genes into spatial domains. While the sequential nature of this process is becoming clear, the mechanisms that mediate these temporal dynamics and translate them into stable spatial boundaries remain debated. Using the gap gene network in the flour beetle Tribolium castaneum [which mediates the regionalization of the anterior-posterior (AP) axis into different axial fates through the regulation of downstream Hox genes] as a …

System For Autonomous Behavioral Verification And Remediation Of Migrated Database Code, Khushmeet Rekhi Jan 2026

System For Autonomous Behavioral Verification And Remediation Of Migrated Database Code, Khushmeet Rekhi

Defensive Publications Series

The migration of database code may result in data corruption when static translation tools do not fully account for behavioral differences between source and target platforms, for example, in rounding or null value handling. A dynamic verification approach can address this. A system may passively observe a legacy database to capture truth vectors, which can be records linking transaction inputs to their verified outputs. Translated code can then be executed in an isolated sandbox environment using these inputs. A semantic comparator may analyze the new output against the legacy output from the truth vector. If a material discrepancy is found, …

3d Object Tracking Registration Based On Improved Rbot Method, Jiarui Zhou, Haihua Cui, Pengcheng Li, Shihao Gu, Huipu Hao, Xifu Zhao, Anan Zhao, Tao Jiang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: To address the limitations of region-based object tracking (RBOT) in handling isotropic objects and scenarios with similar foreground-background colors, an improved method integrating edge features is proposed. The approach employs edge detection to extract object contours and designs a region segmentation strategy incorporated into an energy function framework to optimize internal line and edge consistency, thereby enhancing adaptability in dynamic environments and improving pose estimation accuracy. Validation through augmented reality assembly experiments on an aero-engine demonstrates that the proposed method effectively reduces rotational and translational errors, achieving initialization deviations of less than 1.5° and 0.5%, respectively. For static …
