Panic Learning Off (And On) The Covid Campus, Tara Brabazon, Jamie Quinton, Narelle Hunter

Fast Capitalism

Online learning has been flooded with platitudes, promises and possibilities for twenty years. Oversold and undertheorized, online learning reached its "moment' through the Covid lockdown. Underprepared staff and underfunded universities implemented online learning in a crisis. This was a zombie apocalypse of a context in which to summon innovation. This article activates Paul Virilio's University of Disaster to explore the COVID campus and classroom, entering panic learning.

Case Studies To Examine Farmer Perceptions And Implementations Of Buffer Capacity In Southeastern Ontario, Bryan Collins Jan 2026

Case Studies To Examine Farmer Perceptions And Implementations Of Buffer Capacity In Southeastern Ontario, Bryan Collins

Journal of Applied Farm Economics

Buffer capacity measures the ability of a system to maintain its original function when confronted with outside stresses and is often considered to be a key component of resilience. Farmers in southeastern Ontario are facing several threats such as seasonal drought and volatile markets, prompting necessary responses on how to effectively manage their farms. This research study used an exploratory grounded theory approach to inquire how farmers seek to enhance buffer capacity on their farm by asking (1) what short-term threats their farm faces and (2) what strategies they are employing to navigate those threats. Ten farms in the Inverary …

Browser Engine System For Dynamic, Query-Guided Synthesis And Injection Of Contextual Session Essence Into Large Language Model Prompts, Abhay Prakash, Sophie Chang

Defensive Publications Series

A system and method for dynamic, query-guided synthesis and injection of a contextual session essence into large language model prompts provide a browser-native solution to computational latency and context window saturation. The system comprises a context gathering module that performs real-time state measurement of Document Object Model mutations and session logging, contingent upon a user-authorized processing flag. A context analysis and inference engine transforms the resulting raw data cluster into a high-density natural language summary, referred to as the contextual session essence, by executing on-device machine learning inference for intent classification and entity extraction. The query augmentation module intercepts user …

Geochemical And Isotopic Signatures Of Ultramafic-Hosted Magnesite Deposit: A Case Study Of The Edige Region (Ankara-Central Anatolia), Betül Koca, Eli̇f Akiska, Zehra Karakaş, Si̇nan Akiska Jan 2026

Geochemical And Isotopic Signatures Of Ultramafic-Hosted Magnesite Deposit: A Case Study Of The Edige Region (Ankara-Central Anatolia), Betül Koca, Eli̇f Akiska, Zehra Karakaş, Si̇nan Akiska

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The magnesite deposit of the Edige region in Ankara-Elmadağ District of Türkiye is hosted in serpentinite/serpentinized ultramafic rocks, which are mainly harzburgite and dunite. Mineralogical and petrographic studies have shown that ultramafic rocks are composed of serpentine, olivine, and pyroxene with serpentinization preceding magnesite formation. The X-ray diffraction results reveal that dolomite, quartz, calcite, and clay minerals are the main minerals in magnesite samples from serpentinite/serpentinized ultramafic units. Olivine, pyroxene, serpentine, chromite, and iron oxide minerals are also present. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry results show that magnesite in rhombohedral and cryptocrystalline forms is the dominant mineral accompanied …

Mathematics and Statistics Student Research and Class Projects

Remote sensing enables large-scale, image-based assessments of river dynamics, offering new opportunities for hydrological monitoring. We present a publicly available dataset consisting of 281,024 satellite and aerial images of U.S. rivers, constructed using an Application Programming Interface (API) and the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Hydrography Dataset. The dataset includes images, primary keys, and ancillary geospatial information. We use a manually labeled subset of the images to train models for detecting rapids, defined as areas where high velocity and turbulence lead to a wavy, rough, or even broken water surface visible in the imagery. To demonstrate the utility of this dataset, …

Identification Of A Previously Unrecognized Listric Fault Beneath The Acıpayam Graben: Insights From Integrated Dinsar And Field Observations, Semi̇h Eski̇ Jan 2026

Identification Of A Previously Unrecognized Listric Fault Beneath The Acıpayam Graben: Insights From Integrated Dinsar And Field Observations, Semi̇h Eski̇

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The 20 March 2019 Acıpayam earthquake (Mw 5.7) offers a valuable opportunity to examine the complex seismotectonic behavior of the Fethiye-Burdur Fault Zone (FBFZ), a transtensional structure in southwestern Türkiye. This study integrates field observations and focal mechanism data with differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) analysis to reassess the geometry of the causative fault. In contrast to previously proposed northeast-dipping blind fault models, the data obtained in this study indicate a southwest-dipping listric normal-fault system centered on the Yeniköy Fault, projecting beneath alluvial cover. Vertical displacement maps from Sentinel-1 show coseismic subsidence up to 5.8 cm and broader postseismic …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The karst-type bauxite deposits located in southwestern Türkiye represent the most significant bauxite resources in the country. Surrounding these bauxite deposits are widespread red soil deposits of varying sizes, developed over lithologically diverse rocks. This study aims to investigate the origin of these red soils, which were examined in two distinct groups based on their spatial relationship to the underlying geology. The first group of red soils is found on or within the fractures of karstic limestones, while the second group is primarily located in proximity to ophiolitic rocks. The investigation focused on the physical properties, as well as the …

Abic-Based Surficial Density Model Of Türkiye And Tectonic Implications, İlki̇n Özsöz Jan 2026

Abic-Based Surficial Density Model Of Türkiye And Tectonic Implications, İlki̇n Özsöz

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

This study presents a surficial density model of Türkiye derived from the Akaike Bayesian Information Criterion (ABIC) inversion of terrestrial gravity data. By regularizing the gravity field through spatial smoothness constraints, the ABIC method yields optimal Bouguer reduction densities that reflect lateral variations in tectonic architecture, lithological heterogeneity, and upper crustal structure. Over 52,000 georeferenced observations reveal surficial densities ranging from 2.20 to 4.00 g/cm³, with a statistically robust mean of 2.669 ± 0.002 g/cm³ (95% confidence interval), suitable for precision gravity reduction and geodynamic applications. The derived density field delineates key tectonic domains across the Anatolian lithosphere, including extensional …

Long-Term Changes In Relative Humidity And Soil Wetness: Implications On Agriculture And Environmental Sustainability In Western Himalaya, Ashwani Ashwani, Pankaj Kumar

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Long-term climate changes in humidity and soil wetness in the cold deserts of the Western Himalaya are still not well researched. Understanding the long-term trends of relative humidity (RH) and soil moisture is crucial in high-altitude, cold desert regions for effective agricultural management and environmental sustainability. The study was conducted in a part of the western Himalaya, which is an ecologically fragile zone with a highly sensitive agricultural region that is vulnerable to climatic variations. A comprehensive study was conducted to evaluate the spatiotemporal variability of RH and soil wetness by means four techniques: Mann-Kendall, Modified Mann-Kendall, Sen’s slope estimator, …

The Gut Microbiota Shapes The Human And Murine Breath Volatilome, Ariel J. Hernandez-Leyva, Amalia Z. Berna, Maggie H. Bui, Yang Liu, Anne L. Rosen, Michael A. Lint, Samantha A. Whiteside, Natalia Jaeger, Nikhilesh Joardar, Wentai Luo, Multiple Additional Authors

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The gut microbiota is crucial to health, yet implementation of microbiota-based therapeutics is limited by the lack of rapid diagnostics. We hypothesize that breath contains gut microbe-derived volatile organic compounds (VOCs) reflecting microbiota composition and metabolism. In healthy children, we found that breath VOC composition (or volatilome), assessed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, correlates with gut microbiome composition and function. By capturing exhaled breath from human-stool-colonized and monocolonized gnotobiotic mice, we profiled breath VOCs and discovered that murine breath is also significantly influenced by the gut microbiome. VOCs from cultured gut microbes were identified in vivo in monocolonized gnotobiotic colonized mice. …

Ureilite Meteorite Petrofabrics: Evolution And Formation Deformational Conditions, Benjamin Botwe Agyemang Jan 2026

Ureilite Meteorite Petrofabrics: Evolution And Formation Deformational Conditions, Benjamin Botwe Agyemang

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the origin and development of crystallographic fabrics in ureilites, which are primitive achondritic meteorites interpreted as residues of partial melting from a differentiated parent body. In this study, we evaluate three fabric-forming mechanisms: gravitational cumulate crystallization, shock-induced deformation, and flow alignment associated with melt extraction and convective stirring. A quantitative Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) analysis was conducted on six ureilitic meteorites to assess olivine Lattice Preferred Orientation (LPO), Shape Preferred Orientation (SPO), the connection between SPO and LPO, and other deformation metrics, including Grain Orientation Spread (GOS), and Crystal Rotation Axis (CRA). Our results suggest that most …

Effects Of Oral Exams On Entry-Level Stem Mathematics Students, Krysten A. Pampel Jan 2026

Effects Of Oral Exams On Entry-Level Stem Mathematics Students, Krysten A. Pampel

International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

This study investigates the efficacy of oral examinations as an alternative assessment method in college algebra courses, focusing on their impact on student retention of mathematical concepts. Through a comparative analysis of two groups, one undergoing traditional assessment and the other receiving oral examinations, this research explores both quantitative assessment scores and qualitative feedback. While quantitative analysis reveals no significant difference in summative assessment performance between the two groups, qualitative data highlights the benefits of oral examinations, including immediate feedback, enhanced critical thinking, and holistic evaluation of student capabilities. Despite limitations in sample size, the study suggests that oral examinations …

Restorative Justice, Human Dignity, And The Capabilities Approach, Reed Mcfeely Jan 2026

Restorative Justice, Human Dignity, And The Capabilities Approach, Reed Mcfeely

Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy

As a value-driven and transformative approach to criminal justice, restorative justice is inherently philosophical. Despite this, however, its philosophical underpinnings remain underdeveloped. This manuscript argues for the necessity of grounding restorative justice in moral philosophy, specifically through the framework offered by Martha Nussbaum’s capabilities approach. The paper first addresses the fragmented nature of restorative justice values, suggesting a new uniform framework centered on respect, equality, agency, and active striving. It then explores what victims are materially owed in the restorative justice process, advancing Nussbaum’s list of basic capabilities as a foundation. However, the central aim of this manuscript transcends these …

Ethics Across The Curriculum: Application To Economics

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

We propose that the study of economics can be enhanced by students learning ethical reasoning within their economics courses. Our method for introducing more robust discussions of the relationship between ethics and economics is to incorporate principles and strategies from the “Ethics Across the Curriculum” program. The methods we used to enhance our own course can be adapted to any economics course and the resources we provide can help any economist become more comfortable with teaching ethical reasoning.

Changes In Math Prerequisites And Student Performance In Business Statistics: Do Math Prerequisites Really Matter? Jan 2026

Changes In Math Prerequisites And Student Performance In Business Statistics: Do Math Prerequisites Really Matter?

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

We use a binary probit model to assess the impact of several changes in math prerequisites on student performance in an undergraduate business statistics course. While the initial prerequisites did not necessarily provide students with the necessary math skills, our study, the first to examine the effect of math prerequisite changes, shows that these changes were deleterious to student performance. Our results helped convince the College of Business to change the math prerequisite again beginning with the 2008/2009 academic year. Thus, this study is also the first to actually help strengthen math prerequisites and improve student performance in business statistics.

Western Mansions In The Gardens Of Perfect Brightness, Another History Of High Qing Sino-European Exchanges, Nicolas Woreth

Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal

The Gardens of Perfect Brightness, the favorite residence of Chinese Emperors in the High Qing era (1683-1799), held mysteries that will remain forever concealed from the public eye after French and British imperialist forces looted it and burned it beyond repair during the Second Opium War (1856-1860). Behind the doors of the secret garden, scarcely open to anyone but the emperor, his wives, and servants, worked European artists and scientists. Most of them were Jesuit missionaries who served the emperor in the hope of gaining his favor and support for the spread of Christianity in China.

This paper aims to …
