Iterative Data Augmentation For Enhancing Deep Learning Performance With Limited Training Data, Avinash Singh Jan 2026

Iterative Data Augmentation For Enhancing Deep Learning Performance With Limited Training Data, Avinash Singh

ETDs from 2020-2029

Deep learning models have demonstrated impressive performance across different domains; however, their effectiveness heavily depends on large, well annotated datasets. In practice, data are often limited in size, leading to overfitting, poor generalization, and degraded model robustness and performance. Moreover, conventional augmentation techniques are typically static in nature, lack adaptability during training, and can produce geometrically inconsistent or unrealistic mixed images. This dissertation addresses three major challenges in data augmentation and model generalization: (1) the scarcity of labeled data and limited dataset size, (2) the absence of adaptive mechanisms for dynamically adjusting learning parameters during training, and (3) the creation …

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) remains a major global health concern and one of the leading causes of death in the United States, affecting approximately 4.6% of adults and reaching a prevalence of 9.4% in Alabama according to 2024 National Health Interview Survey. The disease imposes a substantial burden on quality of life and healthcare costs and contributes to increased disability-adjusted life years and years of life lost, as highlighted by the 2022 Lancet Commission report. Despite its im-pact, COPD is frequently diagnosed only after irreversible lung damage has occurred, largely due to under-recognized symptoms and limited diagnostic tools. Early …

Development Of Salinomycin Analogs As Potential Anti-Cancer Agents, Pavan Goud Juluri Jan 2026

Development Of Salinomycin Analogs As Potential Anti-Cancer Agents, Pavan Goud Juluri

Theses and Dissertations

Salinomycin, a poly-ionophore antibiotic originally isolated from Streptomyces albus, exhibits antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. Over the years Salinomycin has been studied in the effects it has on cancer, specifically cancer stem cells. Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) is an enzyme involved in DNA repair. Inhibiting PARP has been explored as a strategy in cancer treatment, particularly in cancers with defective DNA repair mechanisms, such as those with BRCA mutations. The benzo-thiazoles, and -imidazoles are identified as inhibitor scaffolds, which compete with nicotinamide in the binding pocket of human poly- and mono-ADP-ribosylating enzymes. Benzothiazole, and benzimidazole based compounds particularly with modification at …

Assessing Urban Flooding And Vegetation Impact In Dubai Creek Following The April 2024 Extreme Rainfall, Dana Alhammadi, Xin Hong

All Works

During April 2024, the United Arab Emirates experienced an unusual phenomenon of an intense rainfall episode between April 14 and 18 that resulted in massive flooding in urban environments, particularly low-lying areas such as Dubai Creek. As a tidal waterway with dense urban development and environmentally sensitive zones surrounding it, Dubai Creek is an ideal site for assessing environmental changes caused by to floods. The study employed pre-flood (14 April) and post-flood (18 April) high-resolution PlanetScope satellite images, in combination with QGIS analysis, to evaluate vegetation health and surface water changes. Quantification of affected areas from flooding was achieved through …

Mapping Post-Rainfall Recovery In Arid Regions Using A Hierarchical U-Net, Xin Hong

All Works

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) experienced an extreme rainfall event between April 15 and 17, 2024, and that resulted in severe flooding in its coastal regions. Dubai was among the most affected regions. This study applies a hierarchical deep learning model on PlanetScope imagery to detect flood inundation, quantify flood extent by land cover, and examine short-term recovery dynamics. While earlier work detailed the methodological development of a hierarchical U-Net model (Hong et al., in press), here we emphasize its application for monitoring resilience trajectories in an arid urban environment. Results show that approximately 22 km2 of land was …

Ultrafast Terahertz Spectroscopy And The Suppression Of Superconductivity In Strained Iron Selenide Below 1 Kelvin, Tracy Glen Hastings

ETDs from 2020-2029

We report on terahertz time-domain spectroscopy measurements of iron selenide thin films of various thicknesses grown on a magnesium oxide substrate, focusing on the frequency-dependent complex conductivity in the range of 0.25 - 7 THz. By an- alyzing films with and without an approximately 100 nm thick Se capping layer, we examined the role of oxidation in the suppression of superconductivity. X-ray photo- electron spectroscopy data confirmed that oxidation was effectively mitigated, yet the films exhibited insulating behavior down to 200 mK, a temperature range that has not been extensively studied in this system. Our results indicate that the suppression …

Analysis Of Activated Carbon Fiber (Acf) As Particulate Filtration And Volatile Organic Compound (Voc) Media For The Development Of A Dual-Air Purifying Facepiece Respirator, Brie Mcmahan

ETDs from 2020-2029

Exposure to particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in occupational or public settings poses adverse health outcomes such as respiratory, cardiovascular, reproductive, neurological, carcinogenic morbidity and mortality. Many occupational settings expose workers to PM and VOC concurrently, yet most commercially available respirators are designed to address either particulates or vapors alone. This includes air-purifying respirators (APRs), powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs), and filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) with nuisance-level vapor protection, often limited by bulk, discomfort, high pressure drop, and misuse. We identified a need for alternative dual-exposure media and a respiratory protection device that is lighter, and more comfortable …

Untold Journeys: A Case Study Of Attrition In Alabama’S Public School Teaching Workforce, Jessica Claborn Rose Jan 2026

Untold Journeys: A Case Study Of Attrition In Alabama’S Public School Teaching Workforce, Jessica Claborn Rose

ETDs from 2020-2029

This exploratory multiple-case study investigates the crisis of teacher attrition among early childhood and elementary education graduates from Alabama-based teacher education programs (TEPs) who either avoided public-school teaching or left the profession within three years. The research, guided by Bandura’s social cognitive theory (SCT) and Maslow’s human motivation theory, utilized a qualitative design involving individual interviews with ten teacher leavers (TLs), and five TEP faculty members. The findings reveal that attrition is a multi-faceted crisis rooted in systemic failures, coalescing around two overarching factors: effectiveness of support systems and a collection of barriers. Consistent with SCT, low self-efficacy, resulting from …

Investigation Of The Phase Space Of Tungsten Oxides Nanostructures Via Resistive Hot Wire Oxidation For Efficient Electrochemical Energy Storage And Conversion Applications., Krishna Kc

Theses and Dissertations

The synthesis of tungsten oxide (WO3−δ, 0 ≤ δ ≤ 1) nanostructures with controlled phase and morphology remains a significant challenge, particularly for applications in energy conversion and storage. This dissertation presents an eco-friendly and time-efficient method for synthesizing tungsten oxide nanostructures with tailored stoichiometry and crystal phases through the Resistive Hot Wire Oxidation (RHWO) technique. In this method, a tungsten wire is heated via resistive heating in an oxygen environment, and by precisely controlling the growth conditions, we successfully synthesized WO2.72, WO2.76, WO2.80, WO2.83, WO2.90, and WO2.98 phases with controlled morphologies using simple instrumentation. This approach eliminates the need …

Hybrid Quantum-Classical Optimization Of The Resource Scheduling Problem, Tyler Christeson, Md Habib Ullah, Ali Arabnya, Amin Khodaei, Rui Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Scholarship

Resource scheduling is critical in many industries, especially in power systems where the Unit Commitment (UC) problem determines the on/off status and output levels of generators under physical and economic constraints. Traditional exact methods, such as Branch-and-Bound, Branch-and-Cut, dynamic programming and mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), remain the backbone of UC solution techniques, but they often rely on linear approximations or exhaustive search, leading to high computational burdens as system size grows. Metaheuristic approaches, such as genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimization, and other evolutionary methods, have been explored to mitigate this complexity; however, they typically lack optimality guarantees, exhibit sensitivity to …

Distinct epithelial cell states arise during differentiation, but mechanisms generating transcriptomic diversity among them remain poorly defined. The human ureter urothelium contains basal progenitor, intermediate cells, and terminally differentiated umbrella cells. Prior single-cell RNA sequencing revealed similar global gene expression profiles across these states, raising the question of how distinct identities emerge. Here, we show that alternative cleavage and polyadenylation (APA) introduces a major layer of transcriptomic diversity during urothelial differentiation, largely independent of changes in mRNA levels. Analysis of 13,544 urothelial cells identified hundreds of differentiation-associated APA events. Single-cell imaging revealed spatially specific APA patterns, and reporter assays demonstrated …

Recurrence Of Locally Perturbed Random Walks With Long Jumps, Tamer Oraby, András Telcs Jan 2026

Recurrence Of Locally Perturbed Random Walks With Long Jumps, Tamer Oraby, András Telcs

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We study the effect of local perturbations on the recurrence of random walks with long jumps. Such walks serve as discrete models for infinite-horizon Lorentz processes, in which a particle can take arbitrarily long steps in specific directions. Motivated by a question of Sinai in the finite-horizon case and its extension by Szász to the infinite-horizon setting, we give recurrence and transience criteria for long-jump walks on Z2 and certain classes of graphs, and we prove that local perturbations in a bounded region do not change the recurrence property. Our proofs combine the Markov chain approach with the electrical network …

A Constructive-Engaging Analysis Of Descarrtes (European) And Oyeshile (African) On Personhood, Olanrewaju Shitta-Bey Jan 2026

A Constructive-Engaging Analysis Of Descarrtes (European) And Oyeshile (African) On Personhood, Olanrewaju Shitta-Bey

Comparative Philosophy

An examination of the nature of the human person provides a crucial foundation for understanding human life and identity. Conceptions of personhood have far-reaching implications beyond philosophy, influencing politics, ethics, religion, and epistemology. Beliefs about what constitutes a person shapes theories of rights, responsibility, and justice; moral views on duty and accountability; religious understandings of the soul and the afterlife; and epistemological reflections on the sources and limits of knowledge. Inquiry into human nature is therefore not merely abstract, but central to understanding social organization and individual conduct. This paper examines two influential accounts of human nature drawn from distinct …

A Cross-System Analysis Of Structural Commensurability Between Axiomatic Foundations Of Set Theory (Zfc) And The Principles Of Transcendent Wisdom, Mohammadjavad Maarefvand Jan 2026

A Cross-System Analysis Of Structural Commensurability Between Axiomatic Foundations Of Set Theory (Zfc) And The Principles Of Transcendent Wisdom, Mohammadjavad Maarefvand

Comparative Philosophy

Building on observed similarities in uniqueness proofs for the empty set and the Necessary Existent (Wājib al-Wujūd), this study engages the meta-methodological issue of cross-system commensurability. It identifies four instances of structural commensurability between Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory with Choice (ZFC) and Mulla Sadra's Transcendent Wisdom (Ḥikmat al-Muta'āliyah). First, identity principles: the Axiom of Extensionality provides a formal operational criterion analogous to the philosophical principle of identity through absence of distinguishing features. Second, multiplicity mechanisms: ZFC's constructor axioms (bottom-up construction) and emanation principles (top-down explanation) address analogous problems with inverse orientations. Third, transcending limitation: the Axiom of Infinity ensuring quantitative extensional …

Challenging The Double-Negation Principle: An Analysis Of Strategic Theories Of Sun Zi, Carnot, And Clausewitz Through Intuitionist Logic, Antonino Drago Jan 2026

Challenging The Double-Negation Principle: An Analysis Of Strategic Theories Of Sun Zi, Carnot, And Clausewitz Through Intuitionist Logic, Antonino Drago

Comparative Philosophy

To study a subject similarly represented in Eastern and Western cultures, I examine some classical theories of war strategy according to a new analytical method. This method is based on the recognition that the most important strategic theories are organized as theories essentially not deduced from axioms according to classical logic. Such theories reason through doubly negated propositions (DNPs), whose meanings differ from those of their affirmative counterparts. This corresponds to the use of intuitionist logic instead of classical logic. An inspection of the works of the texts of Sun Zi, Lazare Carnot, and Clausewitz reveals many such propositions, and …

Pitfalls Of Multiplied 3d Landforms Projection: Mapping Deep Multilevel Cave Systems In The Alps (Gamssteig Cave System, Göll Massif), Mateusz Golicz, Jacek Szczygieł

International Journal of Speleology

Cave mapping represents one of the most complex challenges in geomorphological cartography, as it must convey the true three-dimensional geometry of subterranean spaces such as overlapping passages, irregular cross-sections, and variable ceiling and floor morphologies, within a two-dimensional framework. This study examines the methodological and interpretive challenges of cave mapping, utilizing the Gamssteighöhle cave in the Austrian Alps as a case study. During the 11 years of exploration, over 10 km of passages were surveyed using the DistoX vector survey method. Yet, the complex morphological forms necessitated deviations from the standard symbology recommended by the International Union of Speleology. Several …

Predicting Male Flowering Time In Maize Using Machine Learning Technique, Dipok Deb

Data Science and Data Mining

This study compares three machine learning approaches—Elastic Net, Principal Component Regression (PCR), and Partial Least Squares (PLS)—for variable selection and prediction within a high-dimensional Maize-GWAS framework. The goal was to accurately predict the complex polygenic trait of time to male flowering while managing the challenges of numerous, highly correlated genetic markers. The ENET model, which combines l1 and l2 penalties, delivered the highest predictive accuracy and successfully identified a select subset of the most influential genetic variants. In contrast, PCR and PLS, both utilizing dimension reduction, offered a significant advantage in computational speed and model stability. The findings confirm that …

V-22 Osprey Proprotor, Derek Krieger, Carson Running Jan 2026

V-22 Osprey Proprotor, Derek Krieger, Carson Running

Mechanical Engineering Student Publications

This paper covers an aerodynamic analysis of the Boeing Bell V-22 Osprey proprotor blade by utilizing thin-airfoil theory (TAT) and lifting-line theory (LLT). The primary focus is how the coefficient of lift and induced drag respond to changes in the angle of attack of the proprotor blades. The proprotor blade is modeled as a finite wing based on the NACA 63-212 airfoil. The wing has a geometric twist of -35 degrees from root to tip. The theories used to evaluate the blade design are limited by the assumption of incompressible, inviscid flow. The results of the analysis indicate that lift …

Aerodynamic Analysis Of The Constrained Naca 8412 Airfoil For Formula Sae Application Using Thin-Airfoil And Lifting-Line Theories, Trevor Fried, Carson Running

Mechanical Engineering Student Publications

This project applies Thin-Airfoil Theory (TAT) and Lifting-Line Theory (LLT) to evaluate the aerodynamic characteristics of the inverted NACA 8412 airfoil as a single-element rear wing for Formula SAE. The 2D analysis was validated against XFOIL (Re = 480,000), confirming a zero- lift angle of αL=0 = -8.326° and establishing a viscous limit of cl,max ≈ 1.90 at αstall ≈ 13.0°. The 3D LLT model quantified the induced drag (CD,i), demonstrating that the wing's low aspect ratio and rectangular planform reduce efficiency compared to elliptic loading, with the induced drag being the dominant total drag component at high angles of …

Datasets For Response Of A Liquid Water Cloud To In Situ Hygroscopic Seeding, James Simmons Jan 2026

Datasets For Response Of A Liquid Water Cloud To In Situ Hygroscopic Seeding, James Simmons

Michigan Tech Research Data

We have performed experiments in the Michigan Tech Pi Chamber to assess the response of a steady-state, liquid water cloud to in situ injection of a hygroscopic powder. Three materials were tested: jet-milled NaCl, a newly developed NaCl-TiO2 core-shell material, and Arizona test dust as a non-hygroscopic control. Injection of the hygroscopic materials resulted in an increase of the local liquid water content, stimulating formation of droplets up to 60 microns in diameter. Upon injection of the powders, the pre-existing cloud in the chamber collapsed.
