A New Tool For Handling Multiracial And Multi-Identity Data In Health Research, Gabriel J. Merrin Feb 2026

A New Tool For Handling Multiracial And Multi-Identity Data In Health Research, Gabriel J. Merrin

Population Health Research Brief Series

When surveys ask about race or ethnicity, a growing number of Americans select more than one category. The multiracial population now represents over 10% of the U.S. population and is the fastest growing racial group in the country. Yet researchers routinely collapse these individuals into an “other race” category for statistical analysis, rendering specific subgroups invisible. This brief introduces CATAcode, a free software tool that helps researchers systematically explore, document, and prepare check-all-that-apply demographic data for statistical modeling. In a demonstration with over 8,000 high school students, CATAcode revealed 85 distinct racial identity combinations from just eight response options. The …

Stated Preferences For Public Provision Of Services: Experimental Evidence From Latin America, Hernán Bejarano, Matias Busso, Juan Francisco Santos Feb 2026

Stated Preferences For Public Provision Of Services: Experimental Evidence From Latin America, Hernán Bejarano, Matias Busso, Juan Francisco Santos

ESI Working Papers

We study how individuals in six Latin American countries value public versus private provision of education and healthcare using a survey experiment. Respondents were randomly assigned to vignettes that vary income, service quality, and provider type. Reported service quality is the main driver of choices: the probability of selecting a private provider roughly doubles when reported quality of the public option falls from 80 to 20 percent, while income has a smaller effect. Higher institutional trust lowers the likelihood of switching to private providers but does not affect willingness to pay once individuals choose private provision.

Developing Deep Neural Network Based Brain Computational Models From Psychophysics Data Of Some Simple Perceptual Phenomena: Visual As Well As Auditory, Chandran Keerthi S Feb 2026

Developing Deep Neural Network Based Brain Computational Models From Psychophysics Data Of Some Simple Perceptual Phenomena: Visual As Well As Auditory, Chandran Keerthi S

Doctoral Theses

The thesis, consisting of nine chapters, explores the methodology of building testable brain computational models using Deep Neural Networks (DNN), which are trained by psychophysics data. Psychophysics is the quantitative study of perception of physical stimuli. In psychophysics experiments, one or more parameters associated with the stimuli are changed, and the human subject’s responses to the stimuli are recorded. This thesis encompasses both experimental psychophysics works, as well as computational models of the phenomena involved. The contributory chapters of the thesis start in Chapter 2 with the perspective building of the novel methodology followed throughout this research involving psychophysics on …

Use Of Innovative Methods In The Creation Of Testing And Assessment Materials For Future Computer Science Teachers, Gulzhan Mazhibayeva, Serik Kenesbayev, Salamat Idrissov, Indira Salgozha, Zhanel Akhmetova

Higher Learning Research Communications

Objectives:This study aims to examine the effectiveness for future computer science teachers of employing innovative methods when creating innovative testing and assessment materials.

Methods:The methodology for this study involved analyzing survey data using statistical methods, such as descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, analysis of variance (ANOVA), regression, and factor analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of innovative methods in computer science education. Additionally, this study incorporated virtual labs, learning management systems, interactive quizzes, and artificial intelligence–based assessment tools to enhance learning outcomes and student engagement. We collected survey responses for this study from 56 student participants. We then developed a …

A Retrospective Analysis Of Extended Hospital Stays In Patients With Pneumonia And Diabetic Comorbidities In A Rural Midwestern Area, Shlok Rathi, Abbigail Niewchas, Max Balla, Brendan Lamboglia, Mariam Akhtar, Nova Beyersdorfer, Kerry Johnson, John Paulson Feb 2026

A Retrospective Analysis Of Extended Hospital Stays In Patients With Pneumonia And Diabetic Comorbidities In A Rural Midwestern Area, Shlok Rathi, Abbigail Niewchas, Max Balla, Brendan Lamboglia, Mariam Akhtar, Nova Beyersdorfer, Kerry Johnson, John Paulson

Student Publications

Pneumonia is one of the leading causes of hospitalization in the United States, resulting in many hospitalizations and deaths per year. Diabetes is an often-concurrent diagnosis that affects a large population. There is little research regarding the relationship between diabetes and the length of stay for patients hospitalized with pneumonia. This retrospective study aims to analyze whether the presence of diabetes mellitus in patients diagnosed with pneumonia increases the length of stay. Electronic medical records (EMR) from Freeman Health System in Southwest Missouri were utilized to analyze this relationship. Results of this study demonstrated that, in patients diagnosed with diabetes …

Evaluating Climatic Niche Suitability For Bos Javanicus Reintroduction In Cagar Alam Pananjung Pangandaran Using Maxent And Native-Habitat Benchmarks From Ujung Kulon And Alas Purwo, Azhari Al Kautsar, Masita Dwi Mandini Manessa Feb 2026

Evaluating Climatic Niche Suitability For Bos Javanicus Reintroduction In Cagar Alam Pananjung Pangandaran Using Maxent And Native-Habitat Benchmarks From Ujung Kulon And Alas Purwo, Azhari Al Kautsar, Masita Dwi Mandini Manessa

Jurnal Geografi Lingkungan Tropik (Journal of Geography of Tropical Environments)

The Javan banteng (Bos javanicus) persists on Java mainly in a small number of protected-area strongholds, making robust climatic niche characterization important for conservation planning and for evaluating potential management or restoration targets. Here, we modeled banteng climatic suitability in southwestern Java using a MaxEnt (maxnet) framework calibrated with bioclimatic predictors from CHELSA and benchmark occurrence records from extant populations in Ujung Kulon National Park (UKNP) and Alas Purwo National Park (APNP). To contextualize transferability to non-occupied protected habitat, we also projected suitability to Cagar Alam Pananjung Pangandaran (CAPP) and quantified environmental novelty using the Multivariate Environmental Similarity Surface (MESS). …

No Patent Attorney In Their Right Mind: How Jepson Claims Clarify Subject Matter Eligibility Post-Mayo, Jared M. Brown Feb 2026

No Patent Attorney In Their Right Mind: How Jepson Claims Clarify Subject Matter Eligibility Post-Mayo, Jared M. Brown

Journal of Intellectual Property Law

Patent practitioners have gradually shelved Jepson claims for four decades. In those four decades, Supreme Court patent subject matter eligibility jurisprudence has taken a roller-coaster ride from an ancient point-of-novelty approach through the days of Diamond v. Diehr and back to a modernized arguably point-of-novelty-focused approach again in Mayo and Alice. In the absence of congressional action, the Federal Circuit has been left to deal with the aftermath. The inventive landscape—particularly with regard to biotech and software—is shifting fast, and our patent scheme is struggling to keep up.

In the case of software inventions, the Federal Circuit has largely …
