Reduction Of Lunar Dust Adhesion Via Biomimetic Surfaces, Alyssa Vega Feb 2026

Reduction Of Lunar Dust Adhesion Via Biomimetic Surfaces, Alyssa Vega

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Lunar regolith poses significant risks to exploration machinery and equipment due to its highly abrasive, fine, angular, and electrostatic nature, as observed during the Apollo missions. A promising approach to mitigate these effects is the use of bio-inspired, or biomimetic, surfaces. These surfaces replicate natural micro and nanoscale textures to achieve functional properties such as reduced adhesion and enhanced durability. This study aims to quantify the correlation between surface morphology, surface energy, and adhesion in engineered biomimetic samples. Additively manufactured samples were investigated using optical profilometry to quantify surface roughness and topography, enabling correlation of morphology with adhesion and wettability …

A Proposed Research Into Parameter Variation For Stability, Abigail Butcher, Rogelio Gracia Otalvaro

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The Oregonator model can be used to analyze nonlinear changes in systems and can predict the stability of the system. It is an autocatalytic reaction model and a Multiple Input Multiple Output case study that provides a reduced mathematical description of the Belousov–Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction, a non-equilibrium oscillating chemical reaction. It captures the nonlinear chemical oscillations that arise from far-from-equilibrium kinetics. Bifurcation Analysis (BA) offers a mathematical approach to understanding how systems behave under changing conditions by examining nonlinear behaviors and transitional states, known as bifurcations. This poster demonstrates a novel framework that utilizes BA to assess stability, demonstrated through …

Visualizing The Invisible: Simulating Electromagnetic Field In 3d Space With Matlab, Riley Esperanca, Aashman Gupta, Hailey Grabinski, Ameya Sute, Jacob Summerhays, Eliane Dean

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Electromagnetic field behaviours in free space are defined by Maxwell’s Equations, which couple the temporal and spatial variations of electric and magnetic fields through partial derivatives. These derivatives quantify the rate of change of each field’s vector component with respect to position and time in 3D lattice, forming the basis for numerical field analysis. This research will develop a mathematical and computational framework using multivariable calculus to model, simulate, and visualize electromagnetic wave propagation in free space using MATLAB. Gradient, divergence, and curl operations are implemented to compute local field variations and energy transfer. The resulting data are used to …

Constraining The Impact Threat From Small Bodies In Near Earth And Cislunar Space, Skylar G. Butler, Jarrett Dieterle, Henry Sanders, Aiden Kelleher

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Understanding and mitigating the impact threat posed by small bodies in near-Earth and cislunar space is vital for planetary defense, spacecraft safety, and sustainable space operations. This research integrates dynamical evolution modeling, synthetic observations, and reprocessed infrared data to assess the origins and potential hazards of debris from young asteroid families. By modeling the trajectories and orbital evolution of fragments from the Datura, Emilkowalski, 1992 YC2, Lucascavin (Nesvorný & Vokrouhlický, 2006), and Veritas (Nesvorný et al., 2003) families, we constrain how these sources contribute to near-Earth debris populations. Reprocessing Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) data with Fourier-filtering techniques reveals fine-structure variations …

Solar Wind–Magnetosphere Coupling During The September 2025 Cme: Multi-Spacecraft Analysis Using Mms And Omni Data, Skylar G. Butler, Margret Stanley

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

A sequence of two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) impacted Earth in early September 2025, producing consecutive geomagnetic disturbances. The first CME, launched on 31 August 2025 and observed as a halo in SOHO/LASCO imagery, reached Earth on 1 September (~20:45 UTC), generating a clear interplanetary shock. OMNI 1-min solar-wind data show a sudden rise in |B| from ≈ 5 nT to > 25 nT, proton density and velocity increases (≈ 350 → 600 km s⁻¹), and a southward IMF Bz interval that drove enhanced coupling. The Kyoto Dst index recorded a sudden storm commencement followed by a minimum of −75 nT …

How Hidden Companions Skew Stellar Ages: A Binary-Inclusive Analysis Of Ngc 2168, Skylar G. Butler Feb 2026

How Hidden Companions Skew Stellar Ages: A Binary-Inclusive Analysis Of Ngc 2168, Skylar G. Butler

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

We expand upon our previous analysis of NGC 2168 (M35), which investigated the precision of isochrone-based age determination for individual main-sequence stars using photometric modeling. Building on that earlier framework, we now assess how inferred stellar ages change when each object is modeled under the assumption that it may possess an unresolved binary companion. Using post burn in posterior samples from the same dataset, we computed the mean Stage 3 ages for more than 3,000 cluster members with binaries turned on, allowing a direct comparison to our prior results with binaries turned off. The resulting age distribution peaks near 2.1 …

Periodic Pattern In Leidenfrost Bridges: Experiment And Theoretical Modeling, Diana Slavich, Denise Lesnichiy, Niyati Garg, Ian Holland

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

A system consisting of isolated liquid nitrogen Leidenfrost drops and tori boundaries exhibits bridge formation, displaying self-organized oscillations, traveling waves, and regular patterns associated with thermal energy, continuous evaporation, and vapor flow beneath the liquid bridge. To accomplish the liquid bridge formation, liquid nitrogen drops and a thermally controlled substrate were used within a curved boundary. The formation, dynamics, and stability of liquid bridges can be studied in an isolated environment through the Leidenfrost effect, while mathematical modeling can describe these bridges. Investigations into this system imply the formation of solitons, which are modeled using nonlinear differential geometry. Understanding this …

Modeling The Secondary Catastrophic Disruption Of The Veritas Family, Jarrett Dieterle, Skylar G. Butler, Aiden Kelleher Feb 2026

Modeling The Secondary Catastrophic Disruption Of The Veritas Family, Jarrett Dieterle, Skylar G. Butler, Aiden Kelleher

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The Veritas asteroid family, located in the outer main belt, is believed to have formed from the catastrophic breakup of a parent body approximately 8.3 million years ago (e.g., Nesvorný et al., 2003). Larger fragments remained in the main belt, while smaller particles evolved inward under radiation forces, forming a toroidal dust structure observable in infrared data as paired bands. Previous studies (e.g., Dermott et al., 2001) have shown that these bands can be linked to their parent families and modeled from their initial disruptions. We propose that the 10° dust bands associated with Veritas may record evidence of a …

Development Of An Artificial Immune System Based Intruder Detection Algorithm For Comparison With A Novel Intruder Detection Strategy., Jaden Caradine

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

"This project aims to develop an Artificial Immune System inspired intruder detection system based on current state-of-the-art strategies. Traditional intruder detection systems are not equipped to handle the evolving landscape of cyber security. Signature based detection systems require a database of known signatures and traditional anomaly detection systems are plagued with false positives. By contrast, Artificial Immune Systems can respond to threats never encountered. They are adaptive, proactive, and resilient to interference. This makes them ideal for determining when a system is behaving abnormally. Researchers are developing a novel intruder detection system, but they need a baseline to compare it …

A Low-Complexity Generator Matrix-Influenced Algorithm To Globally Recover Algebraic Codes Over Finite Fields, Oshani Jayawardane Feb 2026

A Low-Complexity Generator Matrix-Influenced Algorithm To Globally Recover Algebraic Codes Over Finite Fields, Oshani Jayawardane

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Code Recovery using algebraic-geometric approaches becomes computationally expensive with the cardinality of the field and complex code structures. In response, we propose a low-complexity algorithm that utilizes structures in algebraic-geometric codes over finite fields. The low-complexity algorithm to locally recover algebraic codes over finite fields (i.e., 𝑙𝑟𝑐 algorithm) is defined based on a sparse matrix factorization that computes the inverse of an (r+1) x r generator matrix, whose elements are defined by the points on the surface in P³ over the finite field 𝔽q with locality r. We have shown that the (𝑙𝑟𝑐 algorithm) reduces the complexity from O(n³) to …

Investigation Of Biofilm Formation And Osmotic Stress Tolerance Of Nonmotile E. Coli Mg1655 In Simulated Microgravity, Tyler Jenkins Feb 2026

Investigation Of Biofilm Formation And Osmotic Stress Tolerance Of Nonmotile E. Coli Mg1655 In Simulated Microgravity, Tyler Jenkins

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Simulated microgravity presents multiple physiological stressors for astronauts, including bone demineralization, muscle loss, and weakening of the immune system (Chavez et al., 2024). Bacteria serve as viable model organisms to study physiological changes because of their abundance in the human digestive system and skin. Motility in bacteria plays a significant role in cell survival, but few studies have been conducted on microgravity’s effect on motility phenotypes. While motile strains like K12 have been studied extensively under microgravity conditions (Topolski et al., 2022; Chavez et al., 2024), the effects of simulated microgravity on non-motile strains are largely unknown. To better understand …

Characterizing The Solar Sources Of Periodic Mesoscale Solar Wind Structures Responsible For Radiation Belt Particle Loss: Results And Implications For Space Weather Forecasting, Grace Gratton Feb 2026

Characterizing The Solar Sources Of Periodic Mesoscale Solar Wind Structures Responsible For Radiation Belt Particle Loss: Results And Implications For Space Weather Forecasting, Grace Gratton

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

It is now well-established that the ambient solar wind is dynamic and highly structured at mesoscales – scales larger than kinetic, but smaller than CMEs/SIRs. These structures are often created at the Sun and survive to 1 AU, where they form the ground-state of space weather as they continually buffet Earth's magnetosphere, the moon, and Mars. Two primary ways that mesoscale structures pose significant risks to spacecraft and astronauts are through driving radiation belt depletion, and amplifying the hazards of CMEs and SIRs through upstream solar wind preconditioning. Characterizing the solar origins and solar wind properties of geoeffective mesoscale structures …

Paschen Curves Of Glow Discharges In Different Gas Compositions, Seth Gerow Feb 2026

Paschen Curves Of Glow Discharges In Different Gas Compositions, Seth Gerow

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Our work focuses on low current, low temperature plasma discharges: glow and corona. Townsend theory predicts that the critical voltage to initiate a gas breakdown (i.e., a "spark") between two parallel plate electrodes is dependent on the product of the pressure and distance; consequently, variations in either parameter which results in the same product, pd, do not affect the breakdown voltage. In this work, we present Paschen curves of narrow-to-wide electrode glow discharges in two gas mediums, argon and air. These curves show a deviation from theoretical predictions, such that changes in electrode configuration create a uniform shift of the …

Background:

Conventional angiography remains the standard diagnostic modality for arteriovenous (AV) access dysfunction in hemodialysis patients, but its geometric accuracy is limited. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) offers superior lesion detection, yet its absolute measurement accuracy remains uncertain. Using three-dimensional (3D) printed vascular conduits as reference standards, we assessed the accuracy of IVUS versus angiography, hypothesizing that complex conduit geometry, quantified by Gaussian curvature, would exacerbate angiographic error.

Methods

Clinically relevant AV access geometries were modeled with computer-aided design (CAD) and fabricated using 3D printing. Lumen diameters were measured by contrast angiography and IVUS and compared with CAD dimensions. Conduit geometry was …

Assessing The Threat Of Southern Pine Beetle To Pitch Pine In Acadia National Park, Caroline R. Kanaskie, Mark J. Ducey, Jeff R. Garnas

Faculty Publications

Many of the mountain summits of Acadia National Park (ACAD) are dominated by Pinus rigida (Pitch Pine). The ACAD Pitch Pine population is particularly valuable due to its position at the northernmost edge of the species’ range, its association with unique animal and plant communities, and its contribution to the aesthetics of the park. Pitch Pine is host to Dendroctonus frontalis (Southern Pine Beetle [SPB]). As the name suggests, SPB is native to the southeastern US, and can kill large numbers of healthy pines via mass-attack. With warming winters, SPB can establish and persist further north than ever before, presenting …

Leveraging Redshift Probabilities And Machine Learning Classification To Identify Catastrophic Outlier Photometric Redshift Estimates, J. Yoo, C. Gyure, V. Agarwal, Jack E. Singal, G. Silverman

Physics Faculty Publications

We present results of using a basic binary classification neural network model to identify likely catastrophic outlier (CO) photometric redshift estimates of individual galaxies. The classification is based on individual galaxy redshift probability distributions generated by a multiclass classifier neural network and a support vector machine. Importantly, the redshift probability distributions used as input to the binary classifier can be used for photometric redshift estimates generated by a different method. We find that a simple implementation of this classification can identify a very large fraction of galaxies with CO photometric redshift estimates while erroneously categorizing only a much smaller, in …

The Butterfly Effect In Economics: Exploring Chaos With A Simple Financial Model, Sandy Hs Herho Feb 2026

The Butterfly Effect In Economics: Exploring Chaos With A Simple Financial Model, Sandy Hs Herho

CODEE Journal

Wild swings in financial markets need not result from external shocks like earthquakes or wars—they can emerge from deterministic chaos. This article introduces kalimusada, an open-source Python library that lets students and instructors explore this phenomenon through a simple three- equation model of financial dynamics. The model couples interest rates, investment, and prices through nonlinear feedback, generating bounded but unpredictable oscillations characteristic of chaos. Tiny differences in starting conditions—smaller than any measurement could detect—grow exponentially until two initially identical economies follow completely different paths. The library provides ready-to-use tools for visualizing this “butterfly effect” in economics, computing divergence metrics, and …
