The Lengthening Of Fricative Sounds, Aya Ali Naser Mohammed Sep 2025

The Lengthening Of Fricative Sounds, Aya Ali Naser Mohammed

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

This study addresses the phenomenon of lengthening of linguistic sounds. Lengthening (madd) is a phonetic phenomthat is sakin (silent) and preceded by an open vowel is lengthened (ا) enon specific to the three madd sounds. The alif naturally by two vowel counts (harakāt), but it can be extended up to six counts if followed by a hamza (glottal stop) or a consonant that is either assimilated (mudgham) or clearly pronounced (muzhar). The same applies to the waw sakin preceded by a kasra (i-sound). Lengthening is a (ي) sakin with a preceding dhamma (u-sound), and the yaa (و) phonetic characteristic caused …

Foreign Language Anxiety In Learners’ Oral Performance In English, Niaam Ali Hasan Sep 2025

Foreign Language Anxiety In Learners’ Oral Performance In English, Niaam Ali Hasan

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

The present research is a reasonably comprehensive investigation into the multilevel effect of foreign language anxiety on oral performance in the English language. It probes deep into complex interfaces of anxiety levels, language proficiency, the nature of tasks, and speaking performance for an all-encompassing perspective of the complex dynamics that govern language learning in educational contexts. Drawing on an extensive data collection program amongst a diverse group of international students, this paper identifies and explores a number of key statistical trends that would suggest high levels of anxiety strongly collocated with poor oral performances, particularly in formal assessment tasks.

It …

The Palestinian-Israeli Conflict Through Chomsky And Bremmer’S Interviews: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Noora Jameel, Sarab Khalil Sep 2025

The Palestinian-Israeli Conflict Through Chomsky And Bremmer’S Interviews: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Noora Jameel, Sarab Khalil

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is seen as one of the most serious and controversial issues in the world. In this paper, the researcher seeks to highlight some crucial points with regard to this conflict by adopting critical discourse analysis (CDA) as the primary means of analysis. Since conflicts are usually accompanied by social wrongs, it is more appropriate to use Fairclough’s 2010 approach to CDA in order to get more logical results. However, the study aims to provide a critical analysis of two selected interview by two famous figures; Ian Bremmer and Noam Chomsky in order to highlight the following points: …

Designing Childhood Spaces: Towards An Architecture That Responds To The Child’S Innate Needs And Enhances Interaction, Abdelrahman Mohamed Mousa Sep 2025

Designing Childhood Spaces: Towards An Architecture That Responds To The Child’S Innate Needs And Enhances Interaction, Abdelrahman Mohamed Mousa

Journal of Engineering Research

: The creation of a building for children is no longer just a shelter, but rather a spatial unit for 2020, a diverse and generally direct difference in building the child's personality, which limits the strengthening of control over the child on the one hand, and the direction in which he lives. It is a loud cry, one that is diverse: children have realized us, and the reference to the cry is that we find ourselves participating in dealing properly with children and also in society years later. It is believed that attention to children during the preschool stage significantly …

The Role Of Artificial Intelligence In Promoting Diversity And Inclusion In Urban Public Spaces Aspects Contributing To Mental Health Preservation, Rania B. Shokry

Journal of Engineering Research

I.

Cities are complex systems shaped not only by infrastructure but also by the emotional, sensory, and socio-political experiences of their inhabitants. Despite this multidimensional nature, urban planning is often guided by conventional frameworks that overlook the lived realities of residents. As critical components of the urban fabric, public spaces play a significant role in shaping social identity, cohesion, and psychological well-being.

This research explores the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing diversity and inclusion within urban public spaces, with a particular focus on its impact on mental health. Social segregation remains a major barrier to inclusive urbanism; …

The Political Framing Of The 2024 China-Indonesia Joint Statement, Mahbi Maulaya Sep 2025

The Political Framing Of The 2024 China-Indonesia Joint Statement, Mahbi Maulaya

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

Political leaders always carefully choose what to say and how to state it, as all words count for influencing the public, explicitly or implicitly. Eventually, the ideas framed in a political statement are best understood contextually rather than merely textually. After Prabowo Subianto, the president of Indonesia, visited China in November 2024, both countries released a controversial joint statement. This article aims to analyse the political frames observable in the 2024 China-Indonesia joint statement with a discourse analysis method. The article found five political frames in the statement: 1) Indonesia agrees to China’s vision of global order; 2) China has …

Introduction To Special Issue On Unjust “Permission Structures” In/As Technical Communication, R. J. Lambert, Randall W. Monty, Kymberly O. Morquecho, Sarah Warren-Riley

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

The term “permission structure” has been popularized to describe a specific rhetorical strategy whereby communicators use the audience's existing beliefs and values to persuade them to change their original positions and/or take actions they otherwise would not. Even in its popular uses, permission structuring may be usefully understood as a form of technical communication by which audiences are strategically persuaded to accept or reject complex policy, scientific, and legal topics. However, scholars must resist popular jargon outpacing and superseding the use of technical concepts and critical discourse. Taken together, the seven articles in this special issue potentiate multiple critical, pedagogical, …

Academic Dispositions Of Undergraduate Students: A Comparison Of Students With And Without Learning Disabilities, Gabriel Jones Sep 2025

Academic Dispositions Of Undergraduate Students: A Comparison Of Students With And Without Learning Disabilities, Gabriel Jones

McNair Scholars Research

Students with learning disabilities face complex emotional, psychological, and academic challenges, though prior research presents mixed findings. Some studies highlight negative outcomes, such as heightened shame, emotional distress, and diminished self-efficacy. In contrast, others identify positive traits, including resilience, higher achievement drive, and reduced stress compared to peers without learning disabilities (LDs). The present study aimed to clarify these inconsistencies by employing a mixed methods design to examine differences between undergraduate students with and without learning disabilities. Specifically, the study assessed shame-proneness, self-efficacy, hope, motivation style, and attribution style, while also exploring linguistic patterns through narrative analysis using the Linguistic …

Background

Languages vary in their syntactic (e.g. word order in sentences), lexical (e.g. presence of specific word classes), and morphological (e.g. inflectional or derivational forms of words) properties. This cross-linguistic variation in language typology influences the manifestation of agrammatic symptoms. However, most theoretical models of agrammatism are based on English and a few European languages, limiting their generalizability. This narrow focus neglects the rich syntactic, lexical and morphological variations available in languages globally. Clinically, the lack of language-specific characteristics of agrammatic impairments limits translational potential for precise and improved diagnosis. The Aphasia in South Asian Languages (ASAL) project addresses this …

Background and aims

Intra-individual variability in language performance has been proposed as a factor associated with treatment outcomes in chronic aphasia. However, the nature of linguistic variability and the degree to which it informs therapeutic success remains poorly understood. In this study, we sought to (1) assess person- and item-level factors associated with naming variability, practice effects, and item-based inconsistencies, (2) determine the relation between intra-individual naming variability, practice effects, and item-based inconsistencies at baseline and treatment outcome in aphasia, and (3) determine the treatment impact on the change in variability and consistency of naming responses.

Migration In The Early Chesapeake: Dorchester Co., Md, As A Case Study, 1650–1750, Thomas Daniel Knight

History Faculty Publications

This article examines the migration patterns that shaped the early settlement of Dorchester County, Maryland. Dorchester County is located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, an area distinctive in terms of its geography, history, and culture. In U.S. history, migration has generally proceeded from eastern areas to western ones and from northern areas to southern ones, a pattern dating back to the earliest colonial settlements. Settlement in Dorchester County proceeded primarily from east to west and south to north, with additional migration streams coming from the north out of Delaware and from the west out of Somerset County. This gave Dorchester County …

Sermons And/In/As Literature, Robert Ellison Sep 2025

Sermons And/In/As Literature, Robert Ellison

English Faculty Research

Five of the nineteen contributors to Preaching and the Sermon in the Twentieth Century are members of English departments, so it is somewhat ironic that none of their chapters could be categorized as “literary studies” (they are instead in the sections for history, book history, media studies, and digital humanities). This presentation is intended to offer a perspective that is not represented in that collection.

In about five minutes each, I will survey the three elements mentioned in my title:

1. Sermons and literature. This section will address how sermons can be influenced by other forms of literature, and influence …

Comparison Of Liu-Type Estimator For Multicollinearity In Fuzzy Logistic Regression Model, Ayad Habib Shemail, Ahmed Razzaq Al-Lami, Amal Hadi Rashid

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

This article addresses the fuzzy logistic regression model under conditions of multicollinearity, which causes instability and inflated variance in parameter estimation. In this model, both the response variable and parameters are represented as fuzzy triangular numbers. To overcome the multicollinearity problem, various Liu-type estimators were employed: Fuzzy Maximum Likelihood Estimators (FMLE), Fuzzy Logistic Ridge Estimators (FLRE), Fuzzy Logistic Liu Estimators (FLLE), Fuzzy Logistic Liu-type Estimators (FLLTE), and Fuzzy Logistic Liu-type Parameter Estimators (FLLTPE). Through simulations with various sample sizes and application to real fuzzy data on kidney failure, model performance was evaluated using mean square error (MSE) and goodness of …

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Text augmentation plays a major role when data is scarce. In this context, there are few Arabic news texts for specific purposes, and hence, there is a dire need to generate Arabic text, especially news. This paper presents an enhanced approach to Arabic text augmentation based on Arabic ontology features. The Arabic part of speech, particularly adjectives, verbs, and prepositions, and the ontology properties regarding such parts to create new texts, make up the first stage of the system, which has multiple stages. Word2Vector (Word2Vec) plays a pivotal role in giving Arabic ontology features to the specific Arabic Part of …

Lineage-Associated Zinc Metalloprotease B And Its Impact On Cardiac Damage Elicited During Invasive Pneumococcal Disease, Jennifer Nichelle Luck

All ETDs from UAB

During invasive disease, certain strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn) can invade the myocardium, damaging cardiomyocytes and predisposing patients to life-threatening cardiac complications. To identify genetic loci involved in pneumococcal cardio-virulence, we performed a bacterial genome-wide association study using 825 genomes corresponding to 17 distinct Spn lineages associated with varying rates of cardiac complications during hospitalization for pneumonia. This led to the identification of an allele of zmpB, the gene encoding Zinc metalloprotease B (ZmpB). Infection of mice with a ZmpB deficient mutant, i.e., TIGR4ΔzmpB, found that ZmpB was required to form foci of infection in the heart, i.e., cardiac microlesions. …

From Model To Behavior: Methodological Challenges In Using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps To Represent Mental Models, Catherine Elizabeth Moore Sep 2025

From Model To Behavior: Methodological Challenges In Using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps To Represent Mental Models, Catherine Elizabeth Moore

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the use of Fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) as representations of mental models and how these representations connect to individual behavior. Fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) are semi-quantitative models that encode cause-and-effect structures as directed graphs. They are frequently used to represent individuals' knowledge structures/mental models and should in theory correlate to actions and decisions of individuals; however, this correlation has yet to be explored in a systematic manner. This dissertation represents the first step in experimental research on the connection between FCMs and individual behavior. It examines two theories of how humans use mental models, one based on …

Aisstream-Mcp: A Real-Time Memory-Augmented Question-Answering System For Maritime Operations, Sien Chen, Ruoxian Zhao, Jian Bo Yang, Yinghua Huang

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Ports and maritime operations generate massive real-time data streams, particularly from Automatic Identification System (AIS) signals, which are challenging to query effectively using natural language. This study proposes a prototype AISStream-MCP, a memory-augmented real-time maritime question-answering (QA) system that integrates live AIS data streaming with a Model Context Protocol (MCP) toolchain to support port operations decision-making. The system combines a large language model (LLM) with four MCP-enabled modules: persistent dialogue memory, live AIS data query, knowledge graph lookup, and result evaluation. We hypothesize that augmenting an LLM with domain-specific tools significantly improves QA performance compared to systems without memory or …

What Kind Of Economists Do We Want? From A One-Track To A Two-Track Mind, Magnus Henrekson, Lars Jonung, Mats Lundahl Sep 2025

What Kind Of Economists Do We Want? From A One-Track To A Two-Track Mind, Magnus Henrekson, Lars Jonung, Mats Lundahl

Economic and Business Review

We explore the challenges facing the current academic training of economists in small European countries such as Sweden. The monolithic focus on publishing in the top-five journals, which prioritizes methodological rigor over problem-driven research, is often a threat to social relevance and policy applicability. This limits pluralism, excludes many talented economists, and fails to prepare graduates for nonacademic positions. We propose a two-track model for PhD training and academic evaluation, emphasizing both traditional research and applied economic policy, tailored to the diverse needs of academia, public administration, and business. We also argue for broader evaluation criteria, enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration, and …
