‘Leading Research From A Remote Community-Based Perspective’, Robyn Ober

Talking Heads Seminar Series

In an ideal world, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are those best positioned to undertake research with Indigenous Australians, whether in rural, remote or urban community contexts. While this is not always possible, it is important that research projects should at least be designed and conducted in collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This is to the advantage of all stakeholders, including universities and organisations that have a vested interest in envisioning a better future for Indigenous Australians. To this end, Community-based researchers play a pivotal role in working with organisations to initiate, lead and implement research …

Beyond Description: Interrogating Narrative Elements In Archival Finding Aids, David J. Williams, Richard Kearney

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

As the archival profession evolves, attention is increasingly paid to the usability of its resources and services. User Experience, or UX, is a contemporary design practice gaining prominence among archivists interested in addressing usability. Information design, the process of organizing and presenting information for efficient and effective use, is a component of UX incorporating both the presentation and content of communication instruments, with plain language writing guidelines applied toward achieving this goal. A prominent information artifact produced by archivists is the finding aid, describing and inventorying archival collections. Those components of finding aids providing “access points” into collections—communicating the …

Between Foreignization And Domestication: A Corpus-Based Study Of The Translation Of Food-Related Cultural References In The Arabic Subtitling Of 90 Hollywood Films, Eisa Ahmad Saeed Asiri

UB Journal for Humanities

This paper explores the translation of food-related cultural references (FCRs) from spoken English into Arabic subtitles based on analysis of a corpus-driven mixed-method of 90 Hollywood films. Using the AVT-FoodCorpus90, a 1.4-million-word English-Arabic parallel corpus, the study examines how subtitlers work to balance foreignization and domestication in the process of translating culturally specific food items. The results reveal that the most popular strategy is that which relies on foreignization through transference (29.8%), followed by literal translation (25.1%) and intratextual glosses (15.4%), creating a new trend in Arabic subtitling that promotes cultural visibility and creates intercultural interaction. However, domestication remains necessary, …

The Perceptions Of Middle School Educators Concerning Failed Proficiency In Reading And Writing By Multilingual Learners, Carolyne Carter

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Multilingual learners (MLs) education has been a topic of study among scholars for many years. The problem that was investigated is that middle school (MS) English Language Arts (ELA) teachers are challenged to improve reading and writing instruction for MLs. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the challenges MS ELA teachers face when trying to improve the reading and writing proficiency of MLs. The conceptual frameworks that guided this study were Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory of literacy and Ladson-Billing’s theory on culturally relevant pedagogy. For this basic qualitative design, data were collected through 11 semistructured interviews with MS …

Enhancing Clinical Named Entity Recognition Via Fine-Tuned Bert And Dictionary-Infused Retrieval-Augmented Generation, Soumya Challaru Sreenivas, Saqib Chowdhury, Mohammad Masum

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Clinical notes often contain unstructured text filled with abbreviations, non-standard terminology, and inconsistent phrasing, which pose significant challenges for automated medical information extraction. Named Entity Recognition (NER) plays a crucial role in structuring this data by identifying and categorizing key clinical entities such as symptoms, medications, and diagnoses. However, traditional and even transformer-based NER models often struggle with ambiguity and fail to produce clinically interpretable outputs. In this study, we present a hybrid two-stage framework that enhances medical NER by integrating a fine-tuned BERT model for initial entity extraction with a Dictionary-Infused Retrieval-Augmented Generation (DiRAG) module for terminology normalization. Our …

Exploring Identity Through Six-Panel Memoirs With Collegiate And Secondary Students, Ewa Mcgrail, Lisa York Sep 2025

Exploring Identity Through Six-Panel Memoirs With Collegiate And Secondary Students, Ewa Mcgrail, Lisa York

SANE journal: Sequential Art Narrative in Education

Memoir writing helps to provide mirrors and windows (Bishop, 1990) into the larger human experience by conveying narratives that center on actual life experiences. While memoirs are a well-established genre in literature and literary criticism (Aronowicz, 2024; Kleinbauer, 2007), only recently have graphic novels, including graphic novel memoirs, gained popularity and respect not only among teens, librarians and educators but also among the public (Williams, 2022). In this article, we describe a six-panel memoir assignment completed by collegiate and secondary students and analyze a sampling of memoir creations by both groups of students. Specifically, we are interested in the expressions …

Teachers’ Perception And Practices Of Learner-Centered Methods In English Language Teaching, Gashaw Shewangizaw Sep 2025

Teachers’ Perception And Practices Of Learner-Centered Methods In English Language Teaching, Gashaw Shewangizaw

Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan

This study explored Ethiopian Technical and Vocational Training Institute English teachers' perceptions and practices of student-centered learning. The interviews and observations results revealed positive teacher attitudes towards student-centered approaches, but classroom practices often remained teacher-centered and reliant on textbooks, disregarding student interests. Challenges included a lack of practical implementation skills, conflicting summative assessments, and the need for continuous formative feedback. Bridging the conceptual-practical divide requires practice-integrated professional development and flexible policies to support autonomy and experience- driven curricula. These findings contribute to understanding contextual realities and refining alignment with evolving workforce demands through ongoing improvement and localized responsiveness.

There Are No Words: What Do You Call A Parent Who Has Lost A Child, Sandra K. Cesario Sep 2025

There Are No Words: What Do You Call A Parent Who Has Lost A Child, Sandra K. Cesario

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: There is no commonly used English word to describe a parent whose child is deceased. A child who has no parents is an orphan and a person who has lost a spouse is a widow(er). Absence of terminology to describe parents after the death of a child may contribute to difficulty in adapting to a new identity and alter societal expectations for grieving. Vilomah, a word borrowed from the Sanskrit language meaning "against the natural order," has emerged in non-nursing literature to describe a parent whose child has died. It is derived from the concept that parents …

Improving Retail Operations: Understanding The Drivers Of Abandoned Products At Checkout Points In Zimbabwean Supermarkets, Paul Mukucha Sep 2025

Improving Retail Operations: Understanding The Drivers Of Abandoned Products At Checkout Points In Zimbabwean Supermarkets, Paul Mukucha

Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets

The ever-increasing incidences of abandoned goods at checkout points threaten the viability of retail operations in many supermarkets. Abandoned products are associated with reshelving costs, deteriorating value due to multiple handling, and turning checkout points into a mess. The incidences of dumped goods at checkout points can be reduced if retail operations managers get some insights into the motivations behind such retrogressive consumer behaviour. The need to get such insights led to this study that conducted interviews with customers who had just abandoned their picked products at checkout points. The aim of the study was to find out the reasons …
