Presentation at the Graduate Student Forum of the TESOL Virtual Conference
With the growing number of international students attending American universities in recent years, academic librarians recognize the importance of serving the needs of that population. However, many librarians acknowledge that they feel unprepared to support international students, due to a lack of training or experience working with multilingual or second-language learners. This presentation offers a review of the literature exploring collaborations between librarians and instructors to better support ELLs in a college and university setting and presents recommendations for both librarians and faculty. While this session focuses on academic …
Transnational Networks Of Film Repetitions In East Asia : Proliferation And Limitations, Roman Kusaiko
Transnational Networks Of Film Repetitions In East Asia : Proliferation And Limitations, Roman Kusaiko
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
A growing number of contemporary film critics, influencers, and audiences criticize film remaking, a tested and successful Hollywood practice. The main complaints are a lack of originality, overreliance on repeated titles, and an openly commercial nature. Despite criticism, film remakes have existed for decades and are a vivid and resilient form of recycling under new cultural and geopolitical circumstances. Contemporary film remaking reflects the impacts of globalization, transnationalization, and the rapid development of new media and digitalization.
Nevertheless, there is a tendency to theorize on film remaking, often relying on the dichotomy of the source and a remake or, less …

Congresos y Conferencias

A Systematic Review Of Quizlet In Vocabulary Acquisition, Kübra Öcel, Ayfer Su-Bergil Dr.
i.e.: inquiry in education
The aim of this review article is to assess the use of “Quizlet” as a supplementary web 2.0 tool for vocabulary acquisition in English language settings. To our knowledge there is a dearth of research that thoroughly examines the use of Quizlet. To this end, this paper demonstrates the results of a systematic review of the literature regarding vocabulary acquisition through Quizlet. 25 studies from the ERIC and Web of Science databases, all published in academic journals within the past four years, were analyzed to identify their key concerns and offer an updated understanding of vocabulary acquisition. The scope of …
What Interviewer Reflexivity Has To Offer Qualitative Inquiry: Reflections On Ikeda/Soka Studies, Nai-Cheng Kuo
What Interviewer Reflexivity Has To Offer Qualitative Inquiry: Reflections On Ikeda/Soka Studies, Nai-Cheng Kuo
i.e.: inquiry in education
Interviewer reflexivity is essential in social sciences to enhance the integrity of research studies because it builds trustful relationships, facilitates a nuanced understanding of phenomena, and captures both the individual and social dimensions of the human being (McNair et al., 2023; Olmos-Vega et al., 2022; Soedirgo & Glas, 2020; Villanueva, et al., 2024). Although Finlay’s (2003) five lenses of interviewer reflexivity—strategic, contextual-discursive, embodied, relational, and ethical—provide detailed guides for researchers to consider throughout their interview studies, there is limited literature that demonstrates how these lenses of reflexivity can offer qualitative inquiries in Ikeda/Soka studies, an emerging educational field for peace …

Gotta Have Somebody: Renal Health And Caregiving Experiences In Rural Florida, Danae Ayra-Barboza
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This thesis examines the dynamics of care in the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) using the care circle model to highlight common experiences and themes during chronic kidney disease (CKD) management. Combining the theoretical frameworks of structural violence, social suffering, and care allowed the analysis of caregiving dynamics in the EAA, a community distressed by a history of structural violence that manifests today as poverty, environmental pollution, inadequate education, and poor health outcomes. Thematic analysis synthesizing the experiences of the care circles identified four themes: Geographical, logical, and economic constraints to healthcare; Cultural, linguistic, and educational barriers; Informal and formal support …

Journal of Extension
Our study examined the interests and preferences of Hispanic residents in Florida regarding extension services. We surveyed 481 adults, focusing on their interest in various topics, preferred information frequency, engagement modalities, and resource types. We found high interest in finance, health, food safety, and wildlife conservation, with a strong preference for online and hybrid resources. However, 66% were unaware of Cooperative Extension, highlighting potential for increased engagement. Our study emphasizes the need for expanded Spanish extension offerings and culturally tailored programs. Further research is recommended to generalize findings across states and better serve the Hispanic community nationwide.

Recognition Of Bangla And English Words In Bengali Texts Using A Modified Bert-Base-Ner Model, Md Parvez Hossain, Ohidujjaman Ohidujjaman, Mohammad Shorif Uddin, Mohammad Nurul Huda, Tetsuya Shimamura
Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics
A fusion of Bangla and English words is frequently utilized, especially on social media. This phenomenon significantly hampers the learning and preservation of the Bengali language among future generations. This paper proposes a model to recognize Bangla and English words in Bengali texts. In addition, this study converts the detected English words into standard Bangla words. In this work, we redesign the BERT-base-NER model using the training input dataset. BERT is chosen for its strong contextual representation capabilities, which are well-suited to noisy and informal text. BERT-base-NER provides strong contextual embeddings but treats token labels independently, lacking explicit modeling of …

Faculty Perceptions Of Efforts To Address The Underrepresentation Of Minority Full-Time Faculty In U.S. Nursing Programs, Akua Oxendine
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem for this study is that, despite longstanding efforts to promote diversity in higher education, faculty from racial and ethnic minorities remain underrepresented in nursing programs in the United States. Guided by critical race theory, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore nursing faculty perceptions of the effectiveness and challenges of institutional efforts to address underrepresentation. Using purposive sampling, 12 nursing faculty members with knowledge of or experience with diversity initiatives were recruited as participants. Data were collected through semistructured interviews. Through a six-phase thematic analysis, nursing faculty identified five critical insights: (a) diversity messaging often …

Fostering Intercultural Competence In Healthcare: Insights From An Online Audiology Course, Lata A. Krishnan, Aparajita Jaiswal, Sakhi Aggrawal
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Intercultural competence (ICC) is essential for students, particularly in healthcare, to provide culturally responsive care. This study examines the integration of intercultural learning (ICL) activities in a fully online, asynchronous 300-level undergraduate audiology course. Pre- and post-test data from the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI®) revealed a significant increase in ICC among senior students, while non-seniors showed no measurable change. Qualitative analysis of final reflections supported these findings, with seniors articulating deeper intercultural insights. These results suggest that ICC development may vary based on academic level and prior experience. Additionally, intentionally structured interventions aligned with students’ prior experiences could further enhance …

Decoding Teen Slang: A Simulation Model For Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Education, Kristen M. Vandenberg
Biennial Convention (CONV)
In the rapidly evolving world of teen and young adult slang, staying current with the latest terminology is crucial for healthcare professionals working with this demographic. For providers in psychiatric and mental health fields, an understanding of this evolving language can facilitate improved communication and foster trust, thereby enhancing clinical outcomes.
This study introduces a simulation model specifically designed for nurse practitioner students in a psychiatric mental health program, aiming to bridge the communication gap between providers and young clients. Grounded in a conceptual framework of cultural competence and communication theory, the simulation seeks to improve student understanding of adolescent …

High nurse turnover is an international concern that exacerbates the nursing shortage, and this shortage impacts patient outcomes, quality of care, patient satisfaction with care and job satisfaction for employees (Bae, 2023; Winter et al., 2020). According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistic (2023), 193,100 openings for Registered Nurses (RN) are expected each year, over the next decade. In 2023, the national turnover rate for hospital-based nurses was 22.5%, and the RN vacancy rate was 15.7% (NSI Nursing Solutions Inc., 2023). Even more alarming is the suggestion that first year registered nurse turnover within hospitals, far exceed all …

Pedagogical Training And Support Systems For Graduate Teaching Assistants, Alina Zaman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Computer science relies heavily on graduate teaching assistants (GTAs), yet most training available to them is generic, not tailored to CS pedagogy, and rarely responsive to the needs of international GTAs. At the same time, rising enrollments and limited instructional capacity make timely, high-quality feedback on code both essential and difficult to deliver—especially in low-resource departments. This dissertation addresses that problem by pairing programmatic GTA preparation with assistive, human-in-the-loop AI and by empirically mapping where, how, and under what conditions AI can responsibly augment GTA feedback practice. First, I worked with the GTA training team to design and deploy a …
