Cultural Influences On Camouflaging And Autistic Burnout: Examining The Experiences Of Latino Autistic Young Adults, Antonio F Pagán, Katherine A Loveland, Ron Acierno

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The present study explored the relationship between camouflaging, autistic burnout, and cultural factors in Latino young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While autistic burnout and camouflaging have been widely studied in general ASD populations, limited research has focused on Latino individuals, who may experience unique pressures due to cultural values such as collectivism, familism, and traditional gender roles. Participants (N = 56) from the ¡Iniciando! la Adultez therapy program completed measures assessing burnout, camouflaging, acculturation, and cultural values. Results indicate that participants reported moderate to high levels of autistic burnout, with the highest levels observed in heightened self-awareness …

Telecom services are at the core of today’s societies’ everyday needs. The availability of numerous online forums and discussion platforms enables telecom providers to improve their services by exploring the views of their customers to learn about common problems that customers face. Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools can be used to process the free text collected. One way of working with such data is to represent text as numerical vectors using one of many word embedding models based on neural networks. This research uses a novel dataset of telecom customers’ reviews to perform an extensive comparative study showing how different word …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The mental health of people living in farming communities has been identified as an important public health issue. Cumulative exposure to a range of situational factors contributes to heightened risk of poor mental health and suicide. Access to evidence-based psychological treatments is limited by the availability of skilled mental health professionals. The aim of this trial—co-designed by members of the farming community—is to establish the feasibility of conducting randomised controlled, trial-testing, peer-worker-delivered Behavioural Activation in the farming community. We will undertake a single-blind, parallel group, randomised controlled feasibility trial in rural Australia. People living in farming communities aged over 15 …

Prompt Tuning Without Labeled Samples For Zero-Shot Node Classification In Text-Attributed Graphs, Sethupathy Parameswaran, Suresh Sundaram, Yuan Fang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Node classification is a fundamental problem in information retrieval with many real-world applications, such as community detection in social networks, grouping articles published online and product categorization in e-commerce. Zero-shot node classification in text-attributed graphs (TAGs) presents a significant challenge, particularly due to the absence of labeled data. In this paper, we propose a novel Zero-shot Prompt Tuning (ZPT) framework to address this problem by leveraging a Universal Bimodal Conditional Generator (UBCG). Our approach begins with pre-training a graph-language model to capture both the graph structure and the associated textual descriptions of each node. Following this, a conditional generative model …

School of Medicine Publications

Objectives: The Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP) neuropsychological assessment approach aims to support the collection of harmonizable data on cognitive function for cross-national cognitive aging and dementia research. As the measurement of cognition is sensitive to differences in contextual, cultural, educational, linguistic, social, and other factors that may influence cognitive test performance, HCAP requires adaptation to be appropriate for the contexts in which it is administered. We aim to provide methodological recommendations for the adaptation and implementation of the HCAP and other cognitive data collection tools in novel settings.

Methods: We drew from existing guidelines on cross-cultural psychological test adaptation …

Given the rising prevalence of autism among racial minority children in the United States, but persistent service use disparities, this study examines potential bias in specific items from the autism diagnostic observation schedule (ADOS), a highly regarded autism evaluation. We leveraged unidimensional item response theory graded response models and a sample of 735 children to analyze the differential item functioning (DIF) of items within ADOS Module 3. Three items showed significant signs of racial bias: A1 (overall language level), A5 (offers information), and D5 (compulsions and rituals). On these items, Black/African American and Asian children were usually more likely to …

Systemic Jurisdictional Ambiguity, Norman W. Spaulding Feb 2026

Systemic Jurisdictional Ambiguity, Norman W. Spaulding

UC Law Journal

The purpose of jurisdictional rules is to provide reasonably clear signals about when a court does and does not have power over a case. Judging from the modern Supreme Court’s rules for determining jurisdiction, however, one would think jurisdictional rules need neither be clear nor consistent. From rules for determining standing, federal question jurisdiction, and personal jurisdiction to Erie doctrine and the power of Congress to create non-Article III courts—rules that affect the administration of justice in millions of cases every year—modern jurisdictional rules are notorious for their inconsistency and ambiguity. This level of ambiguity is remarkable given the zeal …

Performance was benchmarked against consensus annotations using weighted F1-score, macro F1-score, and per-class F1-scores and a noninferiority test.

RESULTS: Inter-reader agreement was excellent (κ = 0.91). LLM size (2.3-47.3 GB) and inference time (2.5-14.5 s/note) varied. …

Sumthin: A Context-Dependent African American Vernacular English Word For Variables, Mark Apedo Jan 2026

Sumthin: A Context-Dependent African American Vernacular English Word For Variables, Mark Apedo

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

If mathematics is a language, then African American Vernacular English (AAVE) could hold the key to a fascinating understanding of the evolution of algebra from human speech in North America. The use of the pronoun something (sumthin) to depict an unknown amount of money that varies implies that algebra developed as a logical necessity in human communication. Exploring this phenomenon and leveraging it to demonstrate the concept of algebra could enhance the comprehension of the subject among speakers of AAVE.

The Loan In Moroccan Arabic: Formal Process And Cultural Requirements, Malika Rafiq Jan 2026

The Loan In Moroccan Arabic: Formal Process And Cultural Requirements, Malika Rafiq

Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)

Borrowing in Moroccan Arabic is part of the dynamics of language contact. The article focuses on lexical borrowings from French and what they become once incorporated into usage: how they change, how they integrate, and especially how prefixation and suffixation in Moroccan Arabic can signal a high level of appropriation. The analysis, organized into four axes, highlights that integration does not happen all at once: a borrowing goes through several stages, and once stabilized, it evolves phonologically, morphologically, and semantically, just like words in the language.

The Intercultural: A Standalone Approach?, Abdelatif Makan Jan 2026

The Intercultural: A Standalone Approach?, Abdelatif Makan

Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)

Interculturality, as a catalyst for reflection amidst global transformations, transcends mere coexistence to become an active dynamic of communication and complementarity. By using the literary text as a bridge, this approach enables a decentering of thought, dissolving identity contrasts in favor of a "bicultural love." The study identifies major epistemological challenges, particularly the need to bypass the objectification and sacralization of cultures that freeze identities. Through literature—a true "homeland of language"—a proxy mediation occurs, allowing for the decoding of words with shared cultural loads and the mitigation of cultural shocks. Finally, following the school of thought of Abdelkébir Khatibi, interculturality …

Editorial : Meaning: Between Heritage And Linguistic And Literary Itineraries, Nadia Kaaouas

Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)

This second volume of the journal Faits de Langue et Société serves as an interdisciplinary crossroads, analyzing the linguistic and cultural mutations within Mediterranean and African spaces. Adopting an approach that rejects identity-based withdrawal, the work explores the mechanics of meaning by theorizing interculturality as an autonomous research model, capable of grasping both the historical figures of Andrée Chedid and the spatial tragedy of clandestine migration. This memorial vigil extends to the preservation of intangible heritage, from oral tales to the lexicographical archives of Saïd Cid Kaoui—fundamental pillars of the Amazigh language. Scientific rigor is further deployed through the study …

Interpersonal Satisfaction And Classroom Silence In Chinese Universities: The Mediating Role Of Social Anxiety, Siguang Zhang Jan 2026

Interpersonal Satisfaction And Classroom Silence In Chinese Universities: The Mediating Role Of Social Anxiety, Siguang Zhang

Double Helix Methodology

Introduction: Within Chinese universities, classroom silence, while culturally acceptable, may indicate underlying psychological distress that impedes academic engagement. Drawing upon social-cognitive theory, this study investigates whether social anxiety mediates the relationship between interpersonal satisfaction and students’ in-class silence. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 565 undergraduates from six Chinese universities examined interpersonal satisfaction, social anxiety, and three distinct behavioral indicators of silence (large-lecture, small-discussion, and laboratory contexts). Confirmatory factor analysis established convergent and discriminant validity; Cronbach’s α coefficients ranged from 0.86 to 0.91, demonstrating good internal consistency. A structural equation model (SEM) was employed to test the hypothesized mediation pathway while …

International Review of Humanities Studies

This study examines the portrayal of domestic violence against women in the Thai drama Tie Me (K)not (2022) using Johan Galtung’s theory of violence, which categorizes violence into direct, structural, and cultural forms. Through qualitative content analysis, the research identifies how the drama depicts these forms of violence, reflecting broader societal issues in Thailand. The findings reveal explicit instances of direct violence, such as physical and psychological abuse, systemic structural violence through institutional failures in justice and support systems, and cultural violence rooted in patriarchal traditions that justify gender inequality. The drama not only highlights these oppressive dynamics but also …

Bilingualism has multiple benefits, however, non-native English speakers in the United States often lose their minority language. Nevertheless, language attrition is preventable, as parental perceptions of bilingualism (PoB) contribute to a child’s active use of each language and influence proficiency. At present, there is a significant gap in understanding how different cultures and belief systems might influence the language development of autistic children from bilingual Latino families. Furthermore, research on PoB among parents of autistic children has mainly been qualitative in nature. The purpose of this study was to (a) employ a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach to develop a …
