Investigating Values In Discourse: Ideals And Social Plans, Luke Edward Hanst Nov 2021

Investigating Values In Discourse: Ideals And Social Plans, Luke Edward Hanst

Dissertations and Theses

Social scientists argue that values enable group coordination. I explore two theories of values before turning to evidence provided by Amanda Gorman's inaugural poem, "The Hill We Climb." First, the paradigm of Shalom Schwartz describes values as transsituational goals which enable groups to coordinate action and evaluate the world. I argue the Schwartz paradigm zooms out from values into categories while I need a means to zoom in to understand values in discourse. I turn to the Pragmatic Prospection paradigm to elaborate the cognitive ontology of goals and to understand the function of language. I argue that values are shared …

African American English-Speaking Children's Judgments Of Grammaticality: Effects Of Clinical Status And Grammatical Structures, Lori Elizabeth Vaughn Nov 2021

African American English-Speaking Children's Judgments Of Grammaticality: Effects Of Clinical Status And Grammatical Structures, Lori Elizabeth Vaughn

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

African American English (AAE)-speaking children’s ability to judge the grammaticality of sentences was evaluated by their clinical status and grammatical structure. The study originated from a need to understand more about the tense and agreement systems of AAE speakers with specific language impairment (SLI) relative to their typically developing (TD) AAE-speaking peers. Tense and agreement forms are typically excluded from the assessment and treatment of children who speak AAE in fear of misinterpreting a dialect difference as a language disorder. As a result, limited information exists about the tense and agreement systems of AAE-speaking children.

The data were archival and …

Efficiency Of Teaching Sight Words In Similar Vs Dissimilar Sets, Jensen Chotto Nov 2021

Efficiency Of Teaching Sight Words In Similar Vs Dissimilar Sets, Jensen Chotto

LSU Master's Theses

Early reading intervention can decrease the likelihood that children who struggle with reading develop long-term reading problems. Due to the prevalence of words that cannot be read phonetically in the English language, sight word instruction is required to supplement phonics instruction. In this study, we compared the effects of creating sets of sight words with the same starting letter (3 words per set, 3 total sets) versus distributing words with the same starting letter across sets when assessing acquisition of the combined set (9 words) in five 4-to-6-year-old children using a combined adapted alternating treatments design and pre-posttest design. All …

Work In Progress. Haydn’S Schemata And Hexachords: Two Analytical Case Studies, Gilad Rabinovitch Nov 2021

Work In Progress. Haydn’S Schemata And Hexachords: Two Analytical Case Studies, Gilad Rabinovitch

HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America

Two analytical case studies, from Haydn’s minuet al roverso (from the Symphony Hob. I: 47) and the opening movement of the String Quartet Op. 50, no. 6, show the interaction of galant schemata (Gjerdingen 2007) and the hexachordal solmization of the solfeggio tradition (Baragwanath 2020). Haydn plays upon conventional galant schemata—presumably elements of style shared by listeners who are closely familiar with the idiom (even if they do not have explicit schema labels); he also plays upon a more esoteric element of his own training and that of many other musicians in the period: hexachordal solmization. By considering both schemata …

Higher Sound Levels In K-12 Classrooms Correlate To Lower Math Achievement Scores, Laura Caroline Brill, Lily M. Wang Nov 2021

Higher Sound Levels In K-12 Classrooms Correlate To Lower Math Achievement Scores, Laura Caroline Brill, Lily M. Wang

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Sound levels from occupied classrooms have been gathered from 220 classrooms across four grade levels (3, 5, 8 and 11) over six school days each and processed with k-means clustering into speech and non-speech clusters. Three metrics describing the classroom acoustics, including the average daily A-weighted equivalent level for non-speech, the average daily difference between the A-weighted equivalent levels for speech and nonspeech (a signal to noise ratio), and the mid-frequency averaged reverberation time, were analyzed against classroom-aggregated standardized reading and math achievement test scores, while controlling for classroom demographics including socioeconomic status. Interactions between the metrics and demographics were …

Nonverbal Communication In The Music Classroom, Ryan Sanford Nov 2021

Nonverbal Communication In The Music Classroom, Ryan Sanford

Visions of Research in Music Education

In this literature review, I examine the importance of using nonverbal communication in the music classroom. I first offer insights from the general literature on communication, which has highlighted how nonverbal skills help people to connect and communicate more effectively with others. I then make connections to music education, where we regularly implement nonverbal communication through various means, such as conducting gestures and facial expressions in ensemble contexts. I discuss the importance of finding an optimal balance between verbal and nonverbal instruction to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of musical rehearsals—particularly within culturally diverse populations in which linguistic differences may …

Factors Related To Musical Dictation Teaching Habits To School-Aged Children Among Independent Music Teachers, Justine Pomerleau-Turcotte, Maria Teresa Moreno Sala, Francis Dubé Nov 2021

Factors Related To Musical Dictation Teaching Habits To School-Aged Children Among Independent Music Teachers, Justine Pomerleau-Turcotte, Maria Teresa Moreno Sala, Francis Dubé

Visions of Research in Music Education

Many school-aged children learn music in studio settings, and those lessons often include musical dictation. Nevertheless, we conducted most research about dictation w among collegelevel students. Therefore, we do not know how independent music teachers experience dictation with children. In this paper, we addressed four questions: (1) What are the sociodemographics of teachers who include dictation to their lessons? (2) Why do some teachers choose not to include musical dictation? (3) How often do teachers use strategies when teaching dictation? (4) Are there factors related to the use of those strategies? To get a portrait of the situation, we sent …

Elephant In The Music Room: A Content Analysis Of Ten Years Of Publications Related To Urban Music Education, Carol Frierson-Campbell, Constance L. Mckoy, Nicole R. Robinson Nov 2021

Elephant In The Music Room: A Content Analysis Of Ten Years Of Publications Related To Urban Music Education, Carol Frierson-Campbell, Constance L. Mckoy, Nicole R. Robinson

Visions of Research in Music Education

As suggested by the metaphor of the elephant in the (music) room, our field cannot challenge a problem that we do not acknowledge. The 10th anniversary of Teaching Music in the Urban Classroom provided a milestone for appraising the written conversation about music education in urban schools in the United States. To this end, three authors initiated a content analysis of publications from 2006-2015 that addressed urban contexts. Using Milner’s urban school typology and Farmer’s critical analysis of urban music education publications, we examined peer-reviewed trade and scholarly periodicals as well as master’s theses and doctoral dissertations. Our findings suggest …

Reimagining Pedagogical Possibilities In The Schulwerk: Intersections Of Critical Pedagogy For Music Education And Orff, Ian Cicco Nov 2021

Reimagining Pedagogical Possibilities In The Schulwerk: Intersections Of Critical Pedagogy For Music Education And Orff, Ian Cicco

Visions of Research in Music Education

Critical pedagogy for music education (Abrahams, 2005), as influenced by Freire’s (1970) conception of critical pedagogy, emphasizes the importance of deconstructing power imbalances between students and teachers, in addition to placing students’ musical cultures at the forefront of learning. Though the Orff Schulwerk teaching approach is similar to CPME in terms of its emphasis on student creation, collaboration, and improvisation, Benedict (2009) posited that Orff pedagogy might be a systematized, rigid method that neither fully engages students to critically interact with music nor considers their varying musical interests. The purpose of this paper is to examine how tenets of CPME …

The Musical-Aesthetic Situation As A Basis For Music Education Processes At The Primary School Level, Andrea Pühringer Nov 2021

The Musical-Aesthetic Situation As A Basis For Music Education Processes At The Primary School Level, Andrea Pühringer

Visions of Research in Music Education

Musical-aesthetic education represents an essential hallmark of schooling due to its substantial contribution to society and culture. As understood here, musical-aesthetic education means to make musical-aesthetic situations possible, resulting in musical-aesthetic experiences. In his recently published postdoctoral philosophical thesis from 1930/31 Günther Anders - influenced by Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger - comprehends the musical situation as a transformation of the human being into one of his dimensions, that finds reification only in music. Building on this theoretical work the musical-aesthetic situation as a basis for music education processes and its contribution to developments of approaches of musical- aesthetic education …

Postmodernism, Music Literacies, And The Function-Oriented Music Curriculum, May Kokkidou Nov 2021

Postmodernism, Music Literacies, And The Function-Oriented Music Curriculum, May Kokkidou

Visions of Research in Music Education

In our postmodern world, music educators deal with questions and problems that need in-depth exploration. As the old certainties are collapsing, today, more than ever, the challenges they face prompt them to reassess students' music knowledge and skills and their connection to real life. This paper argues that many of these challenges can be related to the functions of music, in the context of the new means of communication and postmodernism determinants. Furthermore, it argues that the functions of music are a guiding framework for a music functionbased curriculum. Finally, this paper provides examples of how professors may apply such …

Community Of Practice In Integrated Stem Education: A Systematic Literature Review, Jung Han, Todd R. Kelley, Nathan Mentzer, J. Geoff Knowles Nov 2021

Community Of Practice In Integrated Stem Education: A Systematic Literature Review, Jung Han, Todd R. Kelley, Nathan Mentzer, J. Geoff Knowles

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

The efforts to integrate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in K-12 education have been increasing to help student learning and enhance 21st-century skills. The integrated STEM approach not only has pedagogical effects but also helps students prepare for STEM-related careers (ITEEA, 2020; NRC, 2012). Integrated STEM education is grounded in authentic, situated, and contextual learning, where Community of Practice plays a critical role. However, although educators and researchers have advocated Community of Practice as an important concept for learning, empirical research on Community of Practice within the integrated STEM context is limited. Additionally, how integrated STEM Communities of Practice …

Singaporean Pre-Service Teachers’ Perceptions Of Stem Epistemic Practices And Education, Dominic Koh, Aik Ling Tan Nov 2021

Singaporean Pre-Service Teachers’ Perceptions Of Stem Epistemic Practices And Education, Dominic Koh, Aik Ling Tan

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

Integrated Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education is perceived to be the magic bullet for progressive and futuristic learning. It is widely touted as a way to develop 21st century competencies and scientific literacy. Despite the ubiquitous use of the term STEM, understanding of STEM education remains largely diffused. This study serves as a first in contributing a Singaporean narrative on perceptions of STEM education. To discern the diversity and prevalence of understanding of STEM education, 16 undergraduate preservice teachers (PST) responded to a series of questions. Out of the 16, nine PSTs were randomly selected for an …

The course was offered to preservice teachers from 24 different universities across Turkey. The study collected data through a pre- and post-online survey and individual semistructured interviews. The results revealed that while local mentoring as a supplement to the main course content contributed to teacher candidates’ emotional and professional attachment to their profession by helping them relate theory …

Navigating College Choice Through Female Peer-To-Peer Capital: The Case Of Somali American College-Seeking Women, Orkideh Mohajeri, Seth C. Snyder, Fernando Rodriguez Nov 2021

Navigating College Choice Through Female Peer-To-Peer Capital: The Case Of Somali American College-Seeking Women, Orkideh Mohajeri, Seth C. Snyder, Fernando Rodriguez

Journal of Access, Retention, and Inclusion in Higher Education

In this article, we argue that higher education and student affairs has failed to pay sufficient attention to the role of female peer-to-peer social and navigational capital in college choice processes, especially among first-generation, underrepresented, and minoritized collegeseekers. While Community Cultural Wealth (Yosso, 2005, 2006) highlights valuable forms of capital that marginalized, college-bound populations draw on, the general scholarship employing this model does not sufficiently account for the role of female peers as a connective thread that weaves various forms of capital together to support college choice. We consider the case of a group of Somali American undergraduate women attending …

A Systematic Review And Reflection On The Dimensions Of Diversity Represented In Behavior Analytic Research, Jodie Waits Nov 2021

A Systematic Review And Reflection On The Dimensions Of Diversity Represented In Behavior Analytic Research, Jodie Waits

LSU Master's Theses

The United States continues to transition towards a majority-minority composition and this trend has most rapidly emerged for school-aged children. Work with diverse populations calls for specialized skills and training experiences, but these are not strongly reflected in most training programs in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). The present review was conducted to evaluate the scope and range of the dimensions of diversity included in Behavior Analytic research (e.g. race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, etc.), as well as to compile recommendations related to culturally responsive practice in ABA. The search revealed a total of 50 publications featuring a dimension of diversity. These works …

“This Was 1976 Reinvented”: The Role Of Framing In The Development Of A South African Youth Movement, Ben Kirshner, Tafadzwa Tivaringe, Jesica S. Fernández

Ethnic Studies

The literature on contemporary youth organizing has documented psychological benefits associated with participation and some evidence of local political impact. But how do local organizing campaigns transform into regional or national movements? This is a practical question facing youth organizers and one that calls for attention from researchers. In this article, we draw on 3 years of ethnographic fieldwork with South Africa's Equal Education (EE) to analyze collective action frames that enabled EE youth to assert legitimacy and construct shared aims across locales. Our findings focus on how youth constructed historical continuity frames that lent them legitimacy as upholders of …

Exploring The Insights Of Science Within The Context Of Asian Christianity Through The Work Of William R. Stoeger, S.J., Lawrence Ng Yew Kim Nov 2021

Exploring The Insights Of Science Within The Context Of Asian Christianity Through The Work Of William R. Stoeger, S.J., Lawrence Ng Yew Kim

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

The work to relate theology and the findings of modern science, a long-standing one among western scholars, has been, for historical and cultural reasons, largely absent within the context of Asia. Asian theologians engaged in this field appear to do so by employing the perspective of their North American and European colleagues but without contextualizing it within an Asian context, which has been shaped by deeply rooted Asian philosophical foundations and religious traditions.

This dissertation offers a strategy to contextualize the insights of science within the Sinic context of Southeast Asia by appealing to the methodology of a Jesuit priest, …
