Music At The Mary Hare Grammar School For The Deaf From 1975 To 19881, William G. Fawkes, J. Tilak Ratananather Nov 2021

Music At The Mary Hare Grammar School For The Deaf From 1975 To 19881, William G. Fawkes, J. Tilak Ratananather

Visions of Research in Music Education

This review aims to show that it is possible for deaf children to learn and play music to a high academic standard specifically at the Mary Hare School for the Deaf in Newbury, England. The authors describe the foundation of the music programme that led to academic successes years later, and emphasise the need for neuroimaging research to undercover the cognitive neuroscience factors behind these successes. Based on summaries of previously inaccessible publications, the review focuses on the period from 1975 to 1988 describing the early musical activities, public performances and lessons as music became integrated into the curriculum. The …

About Time: Stratedgies Of Performance Revealed In Graphs, Elaine Chew

Visions of Research in Music Education

This paper describes how insights into performance strategies can arise from observations derived from measurements as well as visual inspection of graphs of expressive parameters. The widespread availability of tools for quantifying expressive parameters have made it possible to incorporate engineering approaches to the study of performance for both experts and novices. Scientific graphs map the evolution of these parameters over time, allowing investigations that reveal correspondence or a lack thereof between expressive gestures and musical structures. Three examples illustrate discoveries of principles of performance using a scientific approach. The first example compares three performances of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. …

Channelling Bamberger: An Unorthodox Appreciation Of Jeanne Bamberger's Work On Musical Development And Musical Understanding, Craig Graci Nov 2021

Channelling Bamberger: An Unorthodox Appreciation Of Jeanne Bamberger's Work On Musical Development And Musical Understanding, Craig Graci

Visions of Research in Music Education

This article serves as a tribute to Bamberger as a notable researcher and teacher. The author articulates “working principles” that characterize Bamberger’s work and draws comparisons between two programs, Impromptu and Music Exploration Machine (MxM). From the perspective of music cognition, the most significant elements of this paper concern explicitly representing grouping structure and reductional structure of melodies within a computational formalism. From a developmental perspective, the most salient element is the identification and discussion of working principles associated with Bamberger’s compelling and challenging approach to research on musical development.

Representations Of Music: Neural Foundations And Metaphoric Descriptions, Wilfried Gruhn Nov 2021

Representations Of Music: Neural Foundations And Metaphoric Descriptions, Wilfried Gruhn

Visions of Research in Music Education

In Jeanne Bamberger's (1991) instructive case study on Jeff's learning, Bamberger observed and systematically ordered altering states of mental representations. In this study, Bamberger introduced and discussed a differentiated perspective on various forms of representation. In addressing the processing of music in the mind, mental representations can refer specifically to neural correlates of music or they can address more metaphoric ideas. Therefore, there is a proposed differentiation between mental representations if the mind is involved and neural representations if the brain is addressed. Furthermore, corporeal sensations and bodily excitations provide a necessary prerequisite for the development of mental and neural …

Experience Design And Interactive Software In Music Education Research, Andrew R. Brown Nov 2021

Experience Design And Interactive Software In Music Education Research, Andrew R. Brown

Visions of Research in Music Education

This paper examines the integration of computing technologies into music education research in a way informed by constructivism. In particular, this paper focuses on an approach established by Jeanne Bamberger, which the author also employs, that integrates software design, pedagogical exploration, and the building of music education theory. In this tradition, researchers design software and associated activities to facilitate the interactive manipulation of musical structures and ideas. In short, this approach focuses on designing experiences and tools that support musical thinking and doing. In comparing the work of Jean Bamberger with that of the author, this paper highlights and discusses …

Musical Instrument Familiarity Affects Statistical Learning Of Tone Sequences., Stephen C Van Hedger, Ingrid Johnsrude, Laura J Batterink Nov 2021

Musical Instrument Familiarity Affects Statistical Learning Of Tone Sequences., Stephen C Van Hedger, Ingrid Johnsrude, Laura J Batterink

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Most listeners have an implicit understanding of the rules that govern how music unfolds over time. This knowledge is acquired in part through statistical learning, a robust learning mechanism that allows individuals to extract regularities from the environment. However, it is presently unclear how this prior musical knowledge might facilitate or interfere with the learning of novel tone sequences that do not conform to familiar musical rules. In the present experiment, participants listened to novel, statistically structured tone sequences composed of pitch intervals not typically found in Western music. Between participants, the tone sequences either had the timbre of artificial, …

Say Her Name: The Narrative Afterlives Of Breonna Taylor, Tyler S. Smith Nov 2021

Say Her Name: The Narrative Afterlives Of Breonna Taylor, Tyler S. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Within the growing literature and media coverage of police misconduct and brutality, Black women and girls are functionally invisible. Since the Black Lives Matter movement began the names of only two women have stood out among the Black male victims we know by name: Sandra Bland and Breonna Taylor. Here, I will explore through a Black feminist analytic framework, how the intersectionalities of gender and race contributed to a delay in awareness and accountability for the death of Breonna Taylor. This content analysis looked at the media coverage of Breonna Taylor for the one-year period (3/13/20-3/13/21) to uncover the reasons, …

Toward A Trauma-Informed Campus: Reflections On Fostering Student Success Through San Juan College’S Trauma Literacy Project, Danielle Kubasko Sullivan, Rick Marlatt

Journal of Access, Retention, and Inclusion in Higher Education

During its Fall 2020 semester, San Juan College instituted a trauma literacy project (TLP) in response to the disproportionate effect that the COVID-19 pandemic had on its student population, 32% of whom identify as Native American. The purpose of the TLP was to infuse equity and student support throughout the programming, which consisted of professional development events aimed at increasing trauma awareness on campus as well as a trauma literacy designation pathway for instructors. Participants in the TLP reported better understanding of how to support students through trauma-informed practices. Although there was substantial participation in the programming, several steps need …

Sociolinguistic Analysis Of Spanish R- Variation By New Mexican Child Heritage Speakers: How Speech Analysis Can Improve Speech Impairment Diagnosis And Teaching Techniques, Mariana Marchesi

Shared Knowledge Conference

Sociolinguistic Analysis of Spanish r- Variation by New Mexican Child Heritage Speakers: How Speech Analysis Can Improve Speech Impairment Diagnosis and Teaching Techniques Mariana Marchesi, PhD Student, Linguistics, University of New Mexico Abstract In many varieties of Spanish, variation among rhotic segments - r-sounds - is a salient dialectal feature (Lipski, 2008; Hualde, 2014), and this variability is due to a combination of sociolinguistic and phonetic factors (Melero Garcia, 2015). Previous research on adult speakers of Spanish in New Mexico shows that trill (carro) and tap (roca) productions are not as common as assibilated (shower) and approximant (rest) segments (C.E. …

Life-Or-Death: An Assessment Of Covid-19 Messaging In New Mexico And Potential Consequences For The Spanish-Speaking Population, Victoria Pena-Parr

Shared Knowledge Conference

A common theme throughout history is that marginalized communities are typically the communities hit the hardest during times of crisis. When the fatal coronavirus put the entire world on lockdown in 2020, there were great concerns that marginalized communities would be the most affected by the disease. This was met directly with promises from government officials ensuring that minority populations would not be left out of COVID-19 relief efforts. These promises included some from New Mexico's own Governor Michelle Luján Grisham. However, our study shows that the state of New Mexico not only neglected but failed to provide equity for …

Hispanic Identity & Language Attitudes, Brandon Martínez Nov 2021

Hispanic Identity & Language Attitudes, Brandon Martínez

Shared Knowledge Conference

The conflict between having a traditional Hispanic identity versus a Mexican one is a common theme within the Latino population of New Mexico. It has its roots in the period preceding the invasion of the Southwest by the United States, and was further exacerbated by the struggle for Statehood and through the modern day (Bills & Vigil 2008; Gonzales 2005; Gonzales-Berry & Maciel 2000; Nieto-Phillips 2000; Nostrand 1992). An associated phenomenon is the unprecedented loss of Spanish language skills among the State's Hispanic population in the last 150 years, despite the fact that continued immigration from Mexico and other parts …

The Documentation And Grammatical Description Of Sanapaná (Enlhet-Enenlhet, Paraguay), Jens Van Gysel Nov 2021

The Documentation And Grammatical Description Of Sanapaná (Enlhet-Enenlhet, Paraguay), Jens Van Gysel

Shared Knowledge Conference

The Sanapaná language is spoken by around 1000 people in the Paraguayan Chaco region (Crevels 2012). Only about a third of the members of the ethnic Sanapaná group still speak the language, and in five of the seven Sanapaná communities, children now learn Spanish or Paraguayan Guaraní as their native language. This makes Sanapaná one of the many languages that are in danger of disappearing. Documenting such endangered languages is of vital importance to preserving the world's cultural and intellectual diversity, as well as a representative sample of human linguistic behaviours and their social functions. Language endangerment has also been …

"Space, Place And Cultural Visibility: Barrioization And Barriology In Mario Suárez's Short Stories", Jorge Hernández Nov 2021

"Space, Place And Cultural Visibility: Barrioization And Barriology In Mario Suárez's Short Stories", Jorge Hernández

Shared Knowledge Conference

Mario Suárez (1923-1998) a keen observer, short story writer, polemical essayist, aspiring novelist, devoted educator, informed activist, and tenacious editorialist does not stand as a well-known writer. Preferring to be concise and meticulous, a perfectionist, he was more interested in human character than pure craft. Born and raised in the Chicano barrio of Tucson, Arizona and as one of the most important short story writers of Mexican descent from the early mid-twentieth century, Suárez figures as a unique case of an early Mexican American writer to create a distinctively Chicano literary space. Among the many early league activists who carved …

Creating A Corpus Of Navajo Historical Narratives - Prospects And Challenges, Lukas Denk Nov 2021

Creating A Corpus Of Navajo Historical Narratives - Prospects And Challenges, Lukas Denk

Shared Knowledge Conference

Linguistic research and language instruction have benefitted from linguistic corpora (digital databases containing numerous texts written in one language). For low-resource languages where written records are scarce, the creation of corpora can be a challenge, but has the benefit of supporting conservation and revitalization. My project consists in the creation of a corpus of Diné Bizaad (Navajo), based on existing publicly available narratives written in the 1950's. I present examples from the corpus as well as mention challenges faced in the annotation of the first 5000 words. One problem that pertains to Native American Languages in general is that only …

The Development Of Discourse Markers In Narrations Written By Spanish Heritage Language Learners, Mark Cisneros Nov 2021

The Development Of Discourse Markers In Narrations Written By Spanish Heritage Language Learners, Mark Cisneros

Shared Knowledge Conference

Studies in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) indicate that the use of discourse markers (DMs) in the academic writing of second language learners improves the overall quality of these written texts by contributing to their cohesion and comprehensibility (Saif Modhish 2012; Jalilifar 2008; Intaraprawat & Steffensen 1995). The use of DMs not only improves the quality of second language (L2) written texts, but also that of texts produced by speakers in their first language (L1). Learning how to properly use DMs allows L1 writers to become more conscious of how they present the information in their texts (Steffensen & …

Using Dyadic Observation To Explore Equitable Learning Opportunities In Classroom Instruction, Alyson L. Lavigne, Thomas L. Good Nov 2021

Using Dyadic Observation To Explore Equitable Learning Opportunities In Classroom Instruction, Alyson L. Lavigne, Thomas L. Good

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

Because of poverty, many children do not receive adequate prenatal care, nutrition, or early childhood education. These inequities combine to ensure that many students enter school with considerably less academic content knowledge and skills for learning than their peers. Teachers and schools did not create these gaps, but they must address them. The impact of schools in reducing gaps has been explored for decades only to yield inconsistent findings. One possible reason for these contradictory results is because these studies ignore classroom process. We argue for the inclusion of process in research on opportunity and achievement gaps to better articulate …

Childbirth Educators’ Role Regarding Pregnant Women And Cervical Cancer Prevention, Olufunmiso Oyetunde Asamu, Hadi Danawi

Journal of Excellence in Nursing and Healthcare Practice

Childbirth educators play an important role in educating pregnant women regarding their health. They bridge the gap between pregnant women and healthcare providers. A paucity of information exists on the benefits that pregnant women derive from interactions with childbirth educators regarding early cervical cancer detection. The purpose of our cross-sectional study was to investigate the association among education during early pregnancy offered by the childbirth educators, access to childbirth educators, availability of childbirth educators in the United States and survival from cervical cancer. Secondary data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) on 520,153 women were analyzed using logistic …

Effectiveness Assessment Of The Search-Based Statistical Structural Testing, Yang Shi, Xiaoyu Song, Marek A. Perkowski, Fu Li Nov 2021

Effectiveness Assessment Of The Search-Based Statistical Structural Testing, Yang Shi, Xiaoyu Song, Marek A. Perkowski, Fu Li

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Search-based statistical structural testing (SBSST) is a promising technique that uses automated search to construct input distributions for statistical structural testing. It has been proved that a simple search algorithm, for example, the hill-climber is able to optimize an input distribution. However, due to the noisy fitness estimation of the minimum triggering probability among all cover elements (Tri-Low-Bound), the existing approach does not show a satisfactory efficiency. Constructing input distributions to satisfy the Tri-Low-Bound criterion requires an extensive computation time. Tri-Low-Bound is considered a strong criterion, and it is demonstrated to sustain a high fault-detecting ability. This article tries to …

Task-based language teaching (TBLT) has generated worldwide popularity as a curriculum innovation, and extensive research has investigated various aspects of the approach. However, little is known about the implementation of classroom assessment in TBLT curricula. This study investigated high school English as a foreign language teachers’ beliefs and practices regarding assessment in a curriculum innovation context in Vietnam. Data comprised in-depth interviews with six teachers, as well as testing documents. The findings revealed a strong impact of the high-stakes exams on teachers’ testing beliefs in that they focused explicitly on linguistic items in the assessed content and forms of assessment. …

The Language Of Political Genres: Inaugural And State Speeches Of New York City Mayors And Us Presidents, David C. Hoffman, Tiffany Lewis, Don Waisanen

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

This study provides empirical evidence for the predictions of genre theorists concerning two genres of political speech: inaugural addresses and state addresses (state of the union and state of the city speeches). Using a combination of computer-aided textual analysis and regression analysis, we analyzed 132 speeches from US presidents and NYC mayors to see whether nine dependent variables varied according to genre. The results of our regressions indicated significant differences between the genres: inaugural addresses are more inspirational and unifying than state speeches and state speeches use more policy-related language and language concerned with the past than inaugurals. This paper …

Advice As Metadiscourse: On The Gendering Of Women's Leadership In Advice-Giving Practices, Amaly Santiago Nov 2021

Advice As Metadiscourse: On The Gendering Of Women's Leadership In Advice-Giving Practices, Amaly Santiago

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is about advice as social practice. Specifically, I examine leadership discourse as communicatively constituted and advice-giving as creating a metadiscourse of gendered abilities and leadership asymmetries. In the light of the growing number of initiatives created for women to improve their status as leaders, this project examines leadership, not as a quality, but as discourse: as a communicative dynamic. This is in line with how organizations see leadership when they create leadership programs, for these programs are designed to advise or teach women to be different and better leaders. My purpose is to encourage inclusiveness and contribute to …

On The Squares And In The Comments Sections: The Feminist Movement In Russia Between Contentious And Discursive Politics, Vanya Mark Solovey

Journal of International Women's Studies

Academics have overlooked feminist movements in Russia, allowing struggling women’s rights organizations to overshadow the many achievements of Russian feminists. Scholarship has reported on struggling women’s rights organizations, citing Pussy Riot, the Russian feminist protest punk rock group, as an exceptional case and concluding that the overall situation with feminism in Russia is desperate. Even though recent publications acknowledge some feminist mobilizations, they are still judged insufficient. Why is contemporary Russian feminism continuously “not enough” for outside observers? And is it “enough” for its members?

In this paper, I argue that one of the major reasons why feminists outside Russia, …
