Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The current paper attempts to analyze the similes which were recruited by the American poet Emily Dickinson. Simile is an indispensable literary device in poetry which involves comparing one object with the other object. It usually draws a comparison between two unrelated things, but the core of this comparison is to establish a conceptual theme that conveys a figurative meaning. Typically, simile is an explicit comparison incorporating an imagery, while metaphor represents an implicit comparison between two dissimilar things in order to incarnate a certain image as well. The basic objectives of this research is to conduct a figurative analysis …

Data was collected before, during, and after the experience via focus groups, individual interviews, journal entries, and program evaluations. Data was analyzed using a priori codes compiled from Bennett’s (2008) characteristics of affective, cognitive, and behavioral competencies of ICC. Findings from this study indicated that a short-term …

Passenger Standing To Challenge Searches And Seizures: A Distinction Without A Constitutional Difference, Dante P. Trevisani Nov 2021

Passenger Standing To Challenge Searches And Seizures: A Distinction Without A Constitutional Difference, Dante P. Trevisani

Florida Law Review

This Note argues that the holding of the Court’s past decisions denying passengers standing to challenge searches comports neither with logic nor with its recent decision in Brendlin, and should there fore be changed. Part II explains the development of the law regarding passenger standing in searches, which Part III explains the development of the law regarding passenger in seizures. Part IV argues that the differing approaches to passenger standing are theoretically inconsistent and cannot be reconciled. Part V addresses the reason for this inconsistency; namely, the Court’s erroneous determinations of how a “reasonable” person feels during searches and …

English-For-Teaching In Higher Education: Discourse Functions And Language Exemplars, Eun-Young Julia Kim

MITESOL Journal: An Online Publication of MITESOL

Increasingly more colleges and universities in non-English speaking countries are requiring instructors to teach in English. Although existing research addresses various issues related to using English as a medium of instruction in higher education, few studies have specifically addressed how to provide language scaffolding to college instructors who are asked to teach their subjects in English for the first time. The study builds on Freeman et al.’s (2015) discourse functions for English-for-teaching and presents a refined functional framework to suit college-level classes. It provides authentic language samples to help instructors prepare to teach in English based on the analysis of …

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

In 2015, the United Nations (UN) issued 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, 2030) for everyone in this world to address. The need to act on these goals was intensified in 2020 when the world faced the COVID-19 pandemic spotlighting inequitable infrastructures and systems throughout many countries. The UN, in SDG4, urges us to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” (UN, 2015, p. 21). To address this crisis, the International Council on Education for Teaching (ICET) and MESHGuides sent out a call for research to scholars across the globe to capture teacher voices and …

This research draws on several data sources from multi-week visits in a mixture of new and established immigrant destinations to profile the challenges educational leaders faced developing ESL programs in five rural high schools and explores challenges such as how schools struggle to recruit and retain …

“Who We Are On Paper”: Celebrating Writing Identity And Diversity With High School Seniors In A Dialogic Ela Classroom, Karen Larson Buechner

Theses & Dissertations

Grounded in theory that views language and writing as inextricable from the social event within which it occurs, the purpose of this ethnographic study was to explore how the dialogue produced within the context of a detracked English Language Arts (ELA) classroom contributed to students’ perceptions of their writing identity. The class consisted of a racially, socioeconomically, and academically diverse group of 12th-grade students enrolled in a suburban, public high school. Findings illustrated that writing identity was enacted through multiple iterations of literacy processes embedded in a curriculum that was culturally responsive and implemented through dialogic methods. The Language Of Creativity: Validating Linguistic Analysis To Assess Creative Scientists And Artists, Sana Tariq Ahmed, Gregory J. Feist

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The purpose of this study was twofold: first, to be among the first attempts to validate linguistic analysis as a method of creativity assessment and second, to differentiate between individuals in varying scientific and artistic creativity levels using personality language patterns. Creativity is most commonly assessed through methods such as questionnaires and specific tasks, the validity of which can be weakened by scorer or experimenter error, subjective and response biases, and self-knowledge constraints. Linguistic analysis may provide researchers with an automatic, objective method of assessing creativity, and free from human error and bias. The current study used 419 creativity text …

Embracing The Non-Traditional: Incorporating Non-Traditional Elements Into Library Identity, Melissa Fraser-Arnott Nov 2021

Embracing The Non-Traditional: Incorporating Non-Traditional Elements Into Library Identity, Melissa Fraser-Arnott

Urban Library Journal

A shift in library and librarian identities occurs as libraries and library workers evolve and explore new practices. These changes prompt a discussion of what constitutes “traditional” and “non-traditional” practice in libraries. Identity and gatekeeper theories provide a lens through which the process of introducing and incorporating professional practices in libraries can be understood and offer insights into how ‘non-traditional’ ideas can be incorporated into the concepts of what constitute library collections and services for library workers and other stakeholders. Acceptance of non-traditional practice is aided by three factors. First, library organizational and professional identities must be sufficiently broad to …
