Speech And Enchantment In Early Greek Thought From The Archaic To The Hellenistic Period, R. J. Barnes Jan 2022

Speech And Enchantment In Early Greek Thought From The Archaic To The Hellenistic Period, R. J. Barnes

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

When describing complex aesthetic or cognitive experiences, speakers often reach for idiomatic language. For ancient Greeks, one major cache of idiomatic terms comes from the language of enchantment. This dissertation accounts for how and why ancient Greeks used words related to θέλγω, κηλέω, γοητεία, μαγεία, μαγγανεία, ἐπῳδή, and ψυχαγωγία as a way of describing the effects of speech and song. Examination is given to writers from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period. Most important are Gorgias of Leontini, Plato, and Philodemus, who each remark in detail about the experience of enchantment. The study reveals that Greek writers use the language …

The Rite Of Becoming, Pilar Von Hummel Jan 2022

The Rite Of Becoming, Pilar Von Hummel

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The body is a term that has been vastly manipulated but never fully trapped. The body is in constant transformation and movement, always becoming. Catherine Malabou claims that our bodies are plastic, meaning they have the capacity to give and receive form as well as to explode. Plasticity which has an element of temporality is resistance, it is multiple and transformational. What are the conditions of possibility for the body to transform? Art resists and dance as art resists with the body: its main medium is the body. I claim that dance as art is a site to put plasticity …

The Effects Of Multimedia-Enhanced Instruction On Knowledge Gain And Retention Of Esl Learners: An Assessment Of Mayer’S Redundancy Principle, Araya Ramsin

PASAA

This quasi-experimental quantitative study investigated the effects of different formats of multimediaenhanced instruction on knowledge gain and retention of second language learners. The study focused specifically on assessing Mayer’s redundancy principle. Second language learners were randomly assigned into two groups and were presented with two formats of a multimedia-enhanced lesson: (1) images with audio and (2) images with audio and on-screen text. A repeatedmeasures analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was carried out to evaluate change between pretest and immediate posttest, mean differences in knowledge gain between the two groups, group differences in growth from pretest to immediate posttest, change between immediate …

Exploring And Analysis Of Student Engagement In English Writing Grammar Accuracy Based On Teacher Written Corrective Feedback, Thanakorn Santanatanon, Sumalee Chinoku Jan 2022

Exploring And Analysis Of Student Engagement In English Writing Grammar Accuracy Based On Teacher Written Corrective Feedback, Thanakorn Santanatanon, Sumalee Chinoku

PASAA

Whether students benefit from written corrective feedback (WCF) may depend on their level of engagement with the feedback. To date, student engagement with written corrective feedback has been investigated qualitatively. However, the association between student engagement with feedback and learning outcomes that result from that engagement has not been thoroughly examined. Moreover, little attention has been paid to secondary students’ engagement with written corrective feedback because most studies have focused on university students. Therefore, this mixed-method experimental study was conducted to discern if there was an association between student engagement with feedback and English writing grammar accuracy and to explore …

Intercultural Pragmatic Analysis Of “Sorry” In In-Flight Service Refusals By Flight Attendants: A Case Study Of A Thai Airline, Sompong Khanapornvorakarn, Savitri Gadavanij

PASAA

In seeking to investigate the use of “sorry” in interlanguage refusal by Thai EFL users in an intercultural communication context, the present study collected data from Thai flight attendants who served passengers on international flights for a Thai airline, so as to examine how “sorry” is adopted in refusals in the context of in-flight services. A discourse completion task (DCT) questionnaire was employed to solicit responses from ten male and ten female participants. Through Weerachairattana and Wannaruk’s (2016) classification of refusals and the syntactical construction of “sorry” by Arizavi and Choubsaz (2018), the data gathered were coded and analyzed in …

Lasting Effects Of Foreign Language Anxiety With Adults Working In International Organizations, David D. Perrodin, Nucharapon Liangruenrom, Suriyaporn Chancharoen

PASAA

Foreign language anxiety (FLA), the pervasive feeling of mild to severe apprehension when faced with communicating in a foreign language, is universally quite common. The manifestation of FLA in Thailand, where English is taught as a foreign language in secondary schools, is no exception. By employing descriptive phenomenology, this study sought to corroborate the existence of FLA at some stage during Thai secondary EFL classes and discover if FLA continues to trouble Thai adults working in international organizations. The population of this study is 12 Thai adults who are working as office workers, management, and administrative staff in an international …

The Art Of Burial In The Medieval Nile Valley: Christian And Islamic Interchange In Religious Funerary Contexts, Arielle Winnik Jan 2022

The Art Of Burial In The Medieval Nile Valley: Christian And Islamic Interchange In Religious Funerary Contexts, Arielle Winnik

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Christian communities in medieval Islamic Egypt (ca. ninth to twelfth centuries) were active participants in Islamicate visual culture. Indeed, Christians employed the same artistic objects as their Muslim neighbors in secular contexts, and close commonalities were even pervasive in art employed in religious rituals.

This dissertation investigates one such instance of the shared use of objects between Christians and Muslims in distinct sacred contexts. Christian and Muslim burials shared deep similarities, including the use of burial shrouds and grave markers with almost identical iconographic and compositional features. I draw attention to ways that Christians deployed an interreligious visual and material …

Perspectives Of Reading For Pleasure Pedagogy In Western Australian School Classrooms, Jessica Nailer Jan 2022

Perspectives Of Reading For Pleasure Pedagogy In Western Australian School Classrooms, Jessica Nailer

Theses

Australian children read for pleasure less and less as they move through primary school, with a noticeable decline emerging in the middle primary school years. Reading for Pleasure at School (RfPS) also appears to have become de-prioritised in primary schools, with greater emphasis in the broader literacy education dialogue placed on instructional reading pedagogy and standardised literacy testing. This research focused on the pedagogy that meaningfully supports RfPS in Years 3-6, within a framework of school culture, teacher practices and the physical environment. This investigation aimed to explore the perspectives of three key stakeholder groups from one Western Australian independent …

Ludwig Wittgenstein, Mathematics, Therapy And Life: Research From The Group On Education, Language And Cultural Practices In Brazil, Elizabeth Gomes Souza, Carolina Tamayo, Marcia Maria Bento

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This article aims to describe discursive regularities of theses and dissertations by researchers from the Group “Research, Education, Language, Cultural Practices” - Phala and their effects for / on Mathematics Education. Due to the nature of the proposed study, three axes of description emerged: (1) starting cultural archive and the literatures-traces triggered with respect to Mathematics; (2) therapeutic analog movements operated in research, and (3) aesthetics and writing style. We identified that the archives, taking deconstructionist therapy as a research lens, expand the debates about the understanding of Mathematics as a fixed, linear, compartmentalized, abstract and hierarchical set of knowledge, …

Incorporating Hemodynamic Cognitive Neuromarkers For Personalized Assistive Communication Technology, Seyyed Bahram Borgheai Jan 2022

Incorporating Hemodynamic Cognitive Neuromarkers For Personalized Assistive Communication Technology, Seyyed Bahram Borgheai

Open Access Dissertations

A Brain computer interface (BCI) for communication bypasses standard efferent neural pathways towards peripheral nerves and muscles and directly translates brain activity into symbolic commands to facilitate communication in people with motor impairments. Although a range of access options have been developed, there are still many challenges, particularly for those with severe motor-control limitations. Limitations in availability of access options and the accuracy they provide may lead to patient frustration. Hence, many conventional non-invasive BCIs that rely on eye-gaze control and alternative communicative solutions, such as eye-tracking systems, fail to provide successful and efficient communication in people with severe motor …

Overview Of U.S. Foreign Language Education Policy, Karin P. Hartmaier Jan 2022

Overview Of U.S. Foreign Language Education Policy, Karin P. Hartmaier

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Foreign language education policy has been a topic of concern in the USA since the time of the founding fathers. A paradox of American society is that it is a nation formed from a “melting pot” of immigrants, while the pressure to assimilate to a uniform American culture has resulted in a dominantly monolingual population. With changes in immigration rates and shifts in the national origins of immigrants, the attitudes and perspectives of the general public toward foreigners and foreign languages have also adjusted over time. This literature review will give an overview of how current events and public opinion …

A Retrospective Study Comparing The Effects Of Dynamic Tape In Addition To Treatment On Adults With Upper Extremity Tendinopathy Versus Treatment Alone: A Focus On Elbow Tendinopathy, Lindsey Heaton Jan 2022

A Retrospective Study Comparing The Effects Of Dynamic Tape In Addition To Treatment On Adults With Upper Extremity Tendinopathy Versus Treatment Alone: A Focus On Elbow Tendinopathy, Lindsey Heaton

OTD DEx Reports - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

"Tendinopathy is a common overuse injury in the athletic and working population that is commonly treated with therapeutic tapes. Dynamic Tape (DT) is a biomechanical tape that works mechanically and alters movement patterns to absorb load and re-inject that energy back into the body without limiting range of motion. There is minimal research on the efficacy of DT for elbow tendinopathy. In addition to this, there was not yet a protocol on how to use DT for upper extremity tendinopathies. The researchers used these limitations to design a project with the intent to prove the efficacy of DT as a …

Occupational Therapy’S Role In Supporting Teachers’ Social-Emotional Learning (Sel) Skill Development, Cailtin Read

OTD DEx Reports - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

"Adult social-emotional learning (SEL) has become an increasingly popular topic. SEL has been around for over 20 years with the focus on improving the skills of students. Research has shown that teachers who have better SEL skills have better relationships with their students and in return, those students are more engaged in learning (APA, 2020). The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge and use of SEL skills by general education teachers and identify if more support was needed to enhance their skills and to promote positive, successful school days. Participants (n = 5) included teachers and staff …

We have come to place a great deal of emphasis on the printed and spoken word. Yet, we are all aware, if we think about it, that there is much more to human interaction than the mere linguistic symbols (words) exchanged between two individuals. We unconsciously place more emphasis than we think on other aspects of behavior—appearance, gestures, tone of voice, etc. Until the past few years, you could find very little in popular literature on this, subject, yet …
