“Tea, With Roti And Butter, Mister?” An Examination Of A Single Phrase In A Sentence From Finnegans Wake, Sudarshan Ramani Jan 2022

“Tea, With Roti And Butter, Mister?” An Examination Of A Single Phrase In A Sentence From Finnegans Wake, Sudarshan Ramani

Living in Languages

My paper discusses issues of translation particularly in relation to the untranslatable as understood by Jacques Derrida in “Des tours de Babel.” A single sentence from Finnegans Wake by James Joyce: "cha kai rotty kai makkar, sahib" sheds light on the issues of polysemy in a novel that deliberately overturns assumptions about the English language. Finnegans Wake as can be seen in the study of this sentence, was composed in anticipation of a non-European reader and a non-European audience. Joyce in this instance is performing an act of translation, one which translates a sentence of Hindi (albeit grammatically suspect) in …

Perpetual Emergency: The Self, Translation And Border Crossing, Umar Nizarudeen Jan 2022

Perpetual Emergency: The Self, Translation And Border Crossing, Umar Nizarudeen

Living in Languages

In the contemporary cognitive militarism, which is fast gaining ground in terms of its popularity, self-narratives are sought to be pitted against the practice of translation. The `self’ in this sense is that which is produced as a result of a process of self-narration or autopoiesis. What is foregrounded in cognitive militarism is not poetic subjectivity, but rather an instrumental subjectivity in the form of auto narration and self-apprehension in the form of self-narratives.

Rewriting And Retranslation In Fernando Arrabal’S Exiled Cinematic Memory, John D. Sanderson Jan 2022

Rewriting And Retranslation In Fernando Arrabal’S Exiled Cinematic Memory, John D. Sanderson

Living in Languages

The rejection suffered in Spain by Fernando Arrabal’s cinematography, specifically by his films dealing with the Spanish Civil War, Viva la muerte (1971) and L’arbre de Guernica (1975), stands in contrast with the international appraisal received in France or the United States. The Spanish playwright and filmmaker, exiled in France since 1955, confronted with his cinematic memory the established historical master narrative in Spain both during Franco’s dictatorship and the newly born democracy, and experienced accordingly a fierce national critical backlash.

The fact that Arrabal wrote both film scripts in Spanish, based on his previous literary and theatrical work, had …

Documentation And Preservation Of Endangered Manuscripts Through Digital Archiving In North-Eastern States Of India, Dibanjyoti Buragohain, Manashjyoti Deka, Amit Kumar

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The preservation and conservation of traditional manuscripts is an age old practice. But for the past two decades or so, preserving the endangered manuscripts through digitization has become the prime concern of governments so that such manuscripts can be kept safely for future generations as manuscripts are considered to be an important asset to know our culture and tradition better. The present study primarily highlights the conservation and archival policies adopted by the British Library to digitize the ancient manuscripts of the North-Eastern states of India. The analysis highlights that the state such as Mizoram, Sikkim, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh …

Cancel [© Opyright] Culture: A Legal Analysis Of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, Tracy Reilly Jan 2022

Cancel [© Opyright] Culture: A Legal Analysis Of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, Tracy Reilly

Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property

In this article, I present a combined legal and literary analysis of one of the most destructive themes in contemporary intellectual property scholarship: the putative death of the copyright author. For decades, the vast majority of scholars in all academic disciplines have widely accepted that the conceptual death of the author announced in 1967 by French literary theorist Roland Barthes is today a conclusively proven fact. This piece, however, offers a unique and unquestionably controversial challenge to such a purported denouement: it boldly, and not without trepidation, theorizes that the true goal of some anti-author scholars is the outright annihilation …

Tracking Sentiments Toward Fat Acceptance Over A Decade On Twitter, Sadie Bograd, Benjamin Chen, Ramakanth Kavuluru Jan 2022

Tracking Sentiments Toward Fat Acceptance Over A Decade On Twitter, Sadie Bograd, Benjamin Chen, Ramakanth Kavuluru

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

The fat acceptance (FA) movement aims to counteract weight stigma and discrimination against individuals who are overweight/obese. We developed a supervised neural network model to classify sentiment toward the FA movement in tweets and identify links between FA sentiment and various Twitter user characteristics. We collected any tweet containing either “fat acceptance” or “#fatacceptance” from 2010–2019 and obtained 48,974 unique tweets. We independently labeled 2000 of them and implemented/trained an Average stochastic gradient descent Weight-Dropped Long Short-Term Memory (AWD-LSTM) neural network that incorporates transfer learning from language modeling to automatically identify each tweet’s stance toward the FA movement. Our model …

A Deep Neural Network For Early Detection And Prediction Of Chronic Kidney Disease, Vijendra Singh, Vijayan K. Asari, Rajkumar Rajasekaran

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Diabetes and high blood pressure are the primary causes of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) and kidney damage markers are used by researchers around the world to identify CKD as a condition that leads to reduced renal function over time. A person with CKD has a higher chance of dying young. Doctors face a difficult task in diagnosing the different diseases linked to CKD at an early stage in order to prevent the disease. This research presents a novel deep learning model for the early detection and prediction of CKD. This research objectives to create a deep …

Social And Emotional Needs Of Emergent Bilingual High School Students: Perspectives Of Teachers, School Counselors, And School Social Workers, Elizabeth Vera, Amy J. Heineke, Anna Schultes, Plamena Daskalova

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

Thirty-three school professionals, including teachers, counselors, and social workers (70% female, 20% persons of color, 18% bilingual) shared their perceptions of the social and emotional experiences of emergent bilingual learners (EBLs) attending high schools in the Midwestern United States. In this pre-consultation data collection, themes were identified in qualitative data derived from six focus groups . Analyses revealed a variety of school and family influences tied to EBLs' social and emotional well-being, along with peer and individual factors. Participants recommended that schools should focus not only on instituting culturally-specific structures and initiatives to better support EBLs, but also intervene with …

Minorcan Population Of St. Augustine In The Spanish Census Of 1786, Philip D. Rasico Jan 2022

Minorcan Population Of St. Augustine In The Spanish Census Of 1786, Philip D. Rasico

Florida Historical Quarterly

Nearly half a century ago the noted historian of Spanish colonial Florida, Joseph Byrne Lockey published a transcription, accompanied by a preface and notes, of the Spanish census of St. Augustine and its vicinity which was prepared in December 1786 by the Salamanca-educated Irish priest, Thomas Hassett. An incomplete draft of this document is in the East Florida Papers in the Manuscripts Division of the Library of Congress. Lockey’s translation of the draft is also incomplete; he omits the lengthy section which contains the largest and most ethnically-diverse sector of St. Augustine’s civilian population during the early years of the …

Twilight Of The Mocamo And Guale Aborigines As Portrayed In The 1695 Spanish Visitation, John H. Hann Jan 2022

Twilight Of The Mocamo And Guale Aborigines As Portrayed In The 1695 Spanish Visitation, John H. Hann

Florida Historical Quarterly

The natives of Mocamo and Guale on the coasts of Georgia and northern Florida were the first with whom the French and then the Spaniards established steady contact in the 1560s and among the first to be missionized. Yet, as scholars have remarked, surprisingly little is known about these people during the historic period either archaeologically or historically. Only for the years 1597-1606 are there detailed published accounts of events in the Guale and Mocamo missions in the works of John Tate Lanning, Maynard Geiger, OFM, and Manuel Serrano y Sanz, and in Kathleen Deagan’s chapter on the eastern Timucua …

Language Interfaces In Adult Heritage Language Acquisition: A Study On Encoding Of Nominal Reference In Mandarin Chinese As A Heritage Language, Jing Jin, Sihui Echo Ke, John Chi-Kin Lee Jan 2022

Language Interfaces In Adult Heritage Language Acquisition: A Study On Encoding Of Nominal Reference In Mandarin Chinese As A Heritage Language, Jing Jin, Sihui Echo Ke, John Chi-Kin Lee

Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Publications

According to the Interface Hypothesis in the field of bilingualism, the interface connecting a linguistic module with a language-external domain (e.g., syntax-discourse) will present prolonged difficulties for adult bilingual learners, as compared with the interface connecting language-internal modules (e.g., syntax-semantics). This study tested whether the Interface Hypothesis is applicable to the acquisition of Mandarin Chinese as a heritage language. An internet-based acceptability judgment task (AJT) was administered to 58 advanced and intermediate adult Chinese heritage speakers to collect data in accuracy and reaction time to investigate the adult heritage speakers’ mastery of referential nominal expressions regulated at the syntax-semantics and …

A Framework Of Social Media Messages For Crisis And Risk Communication: A Study Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Nic Depaula, Loni Hagen, Stiven Roytman, Deaundre Dyson, Dana Alnahass, Mihir Patel, Alex B. Hill Jan 2022

A Framework Of Social Media Messages For Crisis And Risk Communication: A Study Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Nic Depaula, Loni Hagen, Stiven Roytman, Deaundre Dyson, Dana Alnahass, Mihir Patel, Alex B. Hill

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications

Social media are important channels for crisis and risk communication by government agencies. However, existing frameworks for studying these messages use loose and inconsistent terminology, making it difficult to build on this research and understand how message features impact message diffusion. In this study, we provide a framework based on textual and media dimensions of messages for improved analysis of social media crisis and risk communication. We apply the framework to a sample of Twitter posts from United States local, state and federal public health agencies during a year of the Covid-19 pandemic. Results show reasonable reliability levels for coding …

The “Oil And Wine” Of A Better Kind Of Politics, Cesare Sposetti Sj Jan 2022

The “Oil And Wine” Of A Better Kind Of Politics, Cesare Sposetti Sj

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

This essay aims to show how the rise of populist phenomena is a contemporary “sign of the times” that the Catholic Church must attend to carefully, in order to respond adequately while drawing from the rich treasure of her social teaching, with a particular attention to Pope Francis’ last Encyclical Fratelli tutti. The application of such an approach to the current Italian context proposes a concrete analysis of and a Catholic response to populism.

Conflict Of Allegiance: Professional Development Challenges In Transforming Science Teachers' Identities And Practices, Elizabeth B. Lewis Jan 2022

Conflict Of Allegiance: Professional Development Challenges In Transforming Science Teachers' Identities And Practices, Elizabeth B. Lewis

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Case studies of two biology teachers, Cathy and David, from the same minority-majority, urban U.S. high school, provide insights into their instructional practices while they engaged in long-term professional development (PD). Findings suggest why science teachers engaged with PD may, or may not, adopt more adaptive pedagogical approaches in the service of reform-based teaching. Gee’s institution- and affinity-identity constructs were used as analytic lenses regarding teachers’ perceptions of teaching, learning, and agency in the dual contexts of their school’s institutional environment and PD community. Over time, Cathy adopted more inquiry-based instructional practices she learned through PD seminars in building a …

Sign Language Interpreter-Mediated Qualitative Interview With Deaf Participants In Ghana: Some Methodological Reflections For Practice, Stephen Baffour Adjei, Sarah Tara Sam, Frank Owusu Sekyere, Philip Boateng Jan 2022

Sign Language Interpreter-Mediated Qualitative Interview With Deaf Participants In Ghana: Some Methodological Reflections For Practice, Stephen Baffour Adjei, Sarah Tara Sam, Frank Owusu Sekyere, Philip Boateng

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative research is adventurous and creative, and committed to understanding unique human experiences in specific cultural ecologies. Qualitative interviewing with Deaf participants is far more challenging for hearing researchers who do not understand sign language, and for this reason such interactions may require the use of a sign language interpreter to facilitate the interview process. However, the quality of sign language interpreter-mediated interactions is likely to be compromised due to omissions, oversights, misinterpretations or additions that may occur during translation. An unthoughtful and poor interpretation of a communicative event by a sign language interpreter during a qualitative interview with Deaf …

Why Narrative Poetry Still Matters In Stylistics, Rachid Acim Jan 2022

Why Narrative Poetry Still Matters In Stylistics, Rachid Acim

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

In Morocco, debates over English language instruction have marginalized poetry as a distinct literary genre. The shortage of poetry events arguably makes poetry teaching both daunting and intimidating. Besides fostering trust, memorization, and empathy, helping students develop a penchant for English language, as well as humanity, poetry, and narrative poetry, in particular, proffers teachers ample opportunities to fully engage students in the learning process. Not only does it awaken their senses and make them establish connections but leads them to think in a critical way about the world around them. In this paper, the teaching of narrative poetry through the …

First-Year Experience Course Impact On Undergraduate International Student Retention And Graduation, Dylan Rust, Raghvendra Singh Jan 2022

First-Year Experience Course Impact On Undergraduate International Student Retention And Graduation, Dylan Rust, Raghvendra Singh

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

As institutions look to improve student retention through first-year experience (FYE) courses, some have implemented courses targeted specifically to the international population. A quantitative comparison of international students who took an FYE course with international students who did not take an FYE course was completed to analyze the differences in retention and graduation rates between the two groups. International freshmen who participated in the FYE course were retained and graduated at significantly higher rates than international freshmen who did not take the course. Aspects of the course that likely led to student retention and graduation are discussed.

The Rice Theory Of Culture, Thomas Talhelm Jan 2022

The Rice Theory Of Culture, Thomas Talhelm

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

The rice theory of culture is the idea that rice farming societies developed into more interdependent, tight cultures in response to the demands of the plant. Farming in general is an interdependent subsistence style, but traditional paddy rice farming was starkly different from other major crops like wheat, corn, and potatoes. Paddy rice required twice as much labor per hectare as wheat farming. Farmers responded by creating customs to share labor. Paddy rice also depended on irrigation systems to flood and drain the fields. Once farmers controlled water, they now had to coordinate how much water each farmer got, when …

Implicit Motives Across Cultures, Jan Hofer, Athanasios Chasiotis Jan 2022

Implicit Motives Across Cultures, Jan Hofer, Athanasios Chasiotis

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

In recent years, methodological and substantial progress has been made in the field of cross-cultural studies on implicit motives. We propose that cross-cultural studies on implicit motives are indispensable to understand universal and culture-specific variations in individuals’ mental processes and behavior. It is assumed that implicit motives represent the first motivational system to be shaped in a human being’s ontogeny and that they have far-reaching consequences for individuals’ development, their feelings and actions in everyday life across different cultural groups. Applying psychometrically sound measurements cross-culturally, researchers have revealed a number of universal relationships between implicit motives and psychological and behavioral …

Johannine Mariology In John 2: 1-11 And Jn 19: 25-27, Azam Mansha Jan 2022

Johannine Mariology In John 2: 1-11 And Jn 19: 25-27, Azam Mansha

Loyola Papers

This paper explores Johannine Mariology through an exegetical study of John 2:1–11 and John 19:25–27, highlighting Mary’s evolving role within the Fourth Gospel. It examines the symbolic and theological significance of Mary as “woman,” linking her to the figure of Zion and the new people of God. At Cana, she emerges as the first believer who mediates faith and points others to Jesus, while at the Cross, she is entrusted with a maternal role in the formation of the believing community. The study underscores Mary’s discipleship, faith, and representative function within the Johannine vision of salvation history.

Fusing Approaches In Educational Research: Data Collection And Data Analysis In Phenomenological Research, Pedro P. Aguas Jan 2022

Fusing Approaches In Educational Research: Data Collection And Data Analysis In Phenomenological Research, Pedro P. Aguas

The Qualitative Report

One of the aims of human sciences seeks to understand the essences and meanings of human experiences by focusing on philosophical, epistemological, methodological, and linguistic principles through transcendental phenomenology and hermeneutics, two philosophies and research methodologies central to qualitative research. Therefore, fusing approaches provides a space where both epistemology and methodology within both traditions can merge to yield meaning and understanding, and at the same time, offer a new approach to dealing with data collection and data analysis without neglecting or distorting original leading concepts. Fusing approaches comes into being as the merging of overlapping and deferring epistemological, methodological, and …

Borders And Migration (Pols 31) Syllabus, Osman Balkan

Aydelotte Curricular Grants

This course offers an introduction to the causes and consequences of international migration and examines how various countries have responded to it. We begin by considering the myriad reasons why people move from one place to another and analyze the different strategies through which political authorities have tried to simultaneously facilitate and obstruct migratory flows. The tension between mobility and containment is a central feature of migration politics.
Our first set of readings offer a broad, historical overview of the relationship between states and migrants within the dynamics of global capitalism. Students will learn about patterns of regular and irregular …

Beyond Bake Sales: Environmental Justice Through Superfund Removal Actions, Clifford Villa

Faculty Scholarship

Few people outside of EPA seem to be aware of the existence of the Superfund removal program, a program through which millions of dollars are allocated through EPA’s ten regional offices each year for cleaning up contaminated sites that are not designated 'Superfund' sites. This essay will provide a basic introduction to the Superfund removal program and particularly encourage consideration of Superfund removals to address growing concerns for environmental justice. Part II examines the legal authorities and limitations of the Superfund removal program. Part III provides examples of removal actions in environmental justice communities across the country. Part IV considers …
