The Light of Islam

In this article, the methods of considering the plural of a few in the Arabic language of the outstanding linguist of the Middle Ages Mahmud Zamakhshary are involved in the analysis. In addition, the author considers the points of view on this issue of the founder of the theoretical grammar of the Arabic language, the famous representative of the early Middle Ages Sibawaihi and other linguists. In the Arabic language, the grammatical section “ism” is characterized by the category of number, which is represented by single, dual, and plural (regular and broken form) forms. The plural is used when more …

Holding Space For Voice: Using Powerful Questions And Appreciative Inquiry Conversations To Understand Values And Needs, Annie Bélanger, Preethi Gorecki

Presentations

Change management is often process-centered instead of people-centered. People are centered when we focus on what is good. Appreciative Inquiry’s strengths-based, positive approach to organizational change allows leaders and facilitators to re-center individuals’ voices.

Appreciative Inquiry helps people move toward a shared vision for the future by engaging others in considering what is good, what could be, what should be, and how to co-create the future. It can foster equitable processes that decenter whiteness and deficit-mindset. Powerful conversations connect thoughts and feelings, result in new ideas, develop new perspectives and understandings, and have an increased potential for action. Developing conversations …

Bilingual Investments Of Dual-Language Immersion Program Alumni, Madina Djuraeva Feb 2022

Bilingual Investments Of Dual-Language Immersion Program Alumni, Madina Djuraeva

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

The article explores bilingual investments of dual-language immersion program alumni through an intersectional narrative analysis. Focusing on the experiences of bilingualism of six alumni, we investigate how they continue to be invested in bilingualism, the factors that shape their self-positionings as bilinguals, and the extent to which race is implicated in their experiences as bilingual speakers of Spanish and English. The analysis revealed that investment is not always agentive and is obligatory, and habitual – less conscious linguistic behavior. While individual efforts sustain bilingual investment, biculturalism requires a collective practice. Bilingual experiences are racialized, and raciolinguistic ideologies at home school, …

Hiding In Plain Sight: Black Panther, International Law And The “Development Frame”, Christopher Gevers Feb 2022

Hiding In Plain Sight: Black Panther, International Law And The “Development Frame”, Christopher Gevers

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article explores the “troubling antinomies” of the 2018 film Black Panther and its entanglements with the collective fantasies of the West—and those of international lawyers and development technocrats in particular—through its reliance on the “lost world” genre, as typified by H. Rider Haggard’s King Solomon’s Mines and John Buchan’s Prester John. The article then situates these troubling antinomies within the tradition of Black Internationalism and the novels of Pauline Hopkins, George S. Schuyler, and Peter Abrahams as practices of “poetic revolt.” Doing so, it is argued, reveals much about the conditions of possibility of the “development frame” and international …

Student Motivation, Anxiety And Pass/Fail Grading: A Sotl Project, Patrick R. Walden Feb 2022

Student Motivation, Anxiety And Pass/Fail Grading: A Sotl Project, Patrick R. Walden

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

This SoTL project explored sources of student anxiety and motivation across student assessment conditions of traditional numerical grading and pass/fail grading and sought to determine if pass/fail grading was helpful in lowering student anxiety while increasing student motivation to learn. Results indicated that students scored equally well on a test of student learning across pass/fail and numerical grading groups, indicating that pass/fail grading did not lead to poorer course objective mastery. Students were similar in terms of sources of anxiety and levels of anxiety. Motivation across groups was also similar, largely extrinsic in nature, and consistent pre- to post-course. Results …

The Flipped Classroom Model As Applied To An Augmentative And Alternative Communication Course, Eric J. Sanders, Louise C. Keegan, Mary Culshaw, Colin Tomes

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

The Flipped Classroom Model (FCM) is an andragogical approach where students complete content-related work outside of the class and engage in activities related to this content during the class period. This approach has garnered recent attention in the field of speech-language pathology, but its implementation has not been studied in an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) course and there is limited information on student perspectives of the experience. This study presents the results of a qualitative investigation designed to investigate the preferences and experiences of preservice speech-language pathology graduate students in an AAC course utilizing the FCM. Semi-structured interviews with …

What Do You Expect? A Comparison Of Perceptions On The Roles Of Clinical Educators And Graduate Clinicians, Catherine Torrington Eaton, Katherine Ermgodts, Katelyn O'Connor Mairet

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

In addition to explicitly defined pedagogical roles and responsibilities, shared perceptions of clinical educator and graduate clinician roles across both parties are essential for an effective supervisory relationship. Previous findings suggest subtle differences in expectations that could potentially impact the learning process. This study was designed to enable a within and across group comparison on perceived roles of supervisors and supervisees. A survey consisting of open-ended prompts, Likert-rating scale questions, and attribute rankings regarding their own and the others’ roles was completed by 90 clinical educators and 63 graduate students in speech-language pathology. Thematic analysis was the primary method of …

Transformative Vocabulary: Fusing Vocabulary Instruction With Citizenship Education, Thomas Broderick

Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Literacy

This action research sought ways to maximize secondary social studies teachers’ instructional time and merge their core functions as literacy, content and social-justice instructors. Drawing on a wide literature demonstrating potent correlation between requisite vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension, this action research investigated the potential interface between explicit literacy instruction, particularly robust vocabulary instruction, and democratic citizenship, while keeping in mind the intent of the Common Core Standards. In other words: is it possible to fuse robust vocabulary instruction to achieve transformative citizenship? Data collection included multiple in-person and digital interviews with veteran K-12 teachers, administrators and university professors about …

From Hemispheric Asymmetry Through Sensorimotor Experiences To Cognitive Outcomes In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Iryna Babik Feb 2022

From Hemispheric Asymmetry Through Sensorimotor Experiences To Cognitive Outcomes In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Iryna Babik

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recent neuroimaging studies allowed us to explore abnormal brain structures and interhemispheric connectivity in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Behavioral researchers have long reported that children with CP exhibit suboptimal performance in different cognitive domains (e.g., receptive and expressive language skills, reading, mental imagery, spatial processing, subitizing, math, and executive functions). However, there has been very limited cross-domain research involving these two areas of scientific inquiry. To stimulate such research, this perspective paper proposes some possible neurological mechanisms involved in the cognitive delays and impairments in children with CP. Additionally, the paper examines the ways motor and sensorimotor experience during …

"The work that follows uses the written word to communicate a philosophically-engendered vision, such approximation to reflective wisdom as I have been able to develop so far. Now if reflective wisdom is what I have been claiming it to be above, then any communication of it by way of writing is at best an attempt, by way of a linguistic-meaning-bearing proxy, to communicate the author's thoughts and claims by first and foremost pointing a reader back into such experience in his/her own life and such reflection upon it as would (so it is hoped) issue in the reader's discovery of …

The Role Of Phonological And Semantic Representations In Verbal Short-Term Memory And Delayed Retention, Theresa Pham, Lisa M.D. Archibald Feb 2022

The Role Of Phonological And Semantic Representations In Verbal Short-Term Memory And Delayed Retention, Theresa Pham, Lisa M.D. Archibald

Neuroscience Institute Publications

It has been suggested that phonological representations play a central role in verbal short-term memory, but when semantic knowledge has been investigated, it has also been shown to influence verbal short-term memory. Explaining this interaction between verbal short-term memory and the linguistic system has produced different theoretical positions: whether semantic knowledge is used to redintegrate phonological traces or if there is direct activation of both phonological and semantic knowledge upon encountering a word. The present study employed a new paradigm to systematically examine phonological and semantic representations in verbal short-term memory as well as long-term impacts. Across two experiments, a …

Mental Health Project Echo Autism: Increasing Access To Community Mental Health Services For Autistic Individuals., Nicole Ginn Dreiling, Michal L Cook, Elena Lamarche, Laura Grofer Klinger

Project ECHO Bibliography

LAY ABSTRACT: Although many autistic individuals have additional mental health conditions, most have a hard time getting services from mental health providers. One reason why these services can be hard to access is that many mental health providers do not feel confident in their ability to provide services to autistic individuals. To share autism expertise with local community providers and boost their confidence in working with autistic individuals, we created a mental health version of the Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (Project ECHO) Autism virtual teleconsultation program. In this pilot study, we recruited 51 community mental health providers to participate …

Epileptogenic Focus Localization By Novel Analysis Of Lntracranial Eeg In The Frequency Domain, Omar Ali Alamoudi Feb 2022

Epileptogenic Focus Localization By Novel Analysis Of Lntracranial Eeg In The Frequency Domain, Omar Ali Alamoudi

Doctoral Dissertations

The gold standard for localization of the epileptogenic zone (EZ) continues to be the visual inspection of electrographic changes during seizure onset by experienced EEG readers. Development of an epileptogenic focus localization tool that can accurately delineate the EZ from the analysis of interictal (seizure-free) period is still an open question of great significance for improved diagnosis (e.g., presurgical evaluation) and treatment (e.g., surgical) outcome. We developed an EZ localization algorithm (LA) based on novel analysis of the power in a narrow frequency band of the recorded signals from the brain, that is, using a simple univariate periodogram-type power measure, …
