The Barriers To Family Engagement In Educational Settings, Julielys Ortiz-Leger
The Barriers To Family Engagement In Educational Settings, Julielys Ortiz-Leger
Community Engagement Student Work
We assume that educators are being professionally trained to handle distinct situations, especially pretraining to families. Most specifically, training on family engagement and ways to engage hard-to-reach families. Family engagement is defined as teachers and parents sharing the responsibility to nurture and help the students learn and meet their unique educational goals. Family engagement encompasses so many different factors and through this research and project, we will be exploring the barriers that families experience when it comes to engaging effectively in educational settings. Educators, administrators, social workers, community leaders, school psychologists, and other education-system-affiliated persons were invited to participate in …

The Role Of Poetry In Cultivating Attentiveness, Curiosity, And Affinity In The Science Classroom, Albert Cheng, Rian Djita
The Role Of Poetry In Cultivating Attentiveness, Curiosity, And Affinity In The Science Classroom, Albert Cheng, Rian Djita
Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications
Poetry is endemic to classical education and often studied for its own sake. However, poetry is also posited to possess a pedagogical power not shared by prose or formal scientific language. Poetry’s distinctive effects on learning outcomes have been well articulated by philosophers since Plato and Aristotle, but their claims have not been subjected to an empirical test. We fill that gap in this study. We collaborated with a local classical grammar school and divided kindergarten, first grade, and second grade classrooms into two groups for a two-week science unit. One group of classrooms integrated poems about the topic of …
The City Of Gods And Fortune: An Architectural And Urban History Of Daulatabad, Ca. 13th–15th Centuries, Mohit Manohar
The City Of Gods And Fortune: An Architectural And Urban History Of Daulatabad, Ca. 13th–15th Centuries, Mohit Manohar
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The fortified city of Daulatabad in Deccan India was of comparable size and prestige to Delhi between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. Daulatabad was situated on important pilgrimage and mercantile routes and attracted immigrants from various parts of the world. Due to its significance and strategic location, political powers from northern and southern India—practicing both Hinduism and Islam—fought fierce battles over the city. Several of them made it their capital. Despite its importance, Daulatabad is often treated as a footnote to Delhi, and its rich architecture and urban layout have not been art historically examined. The City of Gods and …
The Function Of Kiaa0319 In Human Neuronal Development, Steven Paniagua
The Function Of Kiaa0319 In Human Neuronal Development, Steven Paniagua
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Reading Disability (RD), also known as dyslexia, is defined as difficulty processing written language in individuals with normal intellectual capacity and educational opportunity. The prevalence of RD is between 5% and 17%, and the heritability ranges from 44% to 75%. Genetic linkage analysis and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified several genes and regulatory elements linked to RD and reading ability. However, their functions and molecular mechanisms are not well understood. Prominent among these is KIAA0319, encoded in the DYX2 locus of human chromosome 6p22. Association of KIAA0319 has been independently replicated in multiple independent studies and languages. Rodent models …
A Monte Carlo Analysis Of Seven Dichotomous Variable Confidence Interval Equations, Morgan Juanita Dubose
A Monte Carlo Analysis Of Seven Dichotomous Variable Confidence Interval Equations, Morgan Juanita Dubose
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Department of Psychological Sciences Western Kentucky University There are two options to estimate a range of likely values for the population mean of a continuous variable: one for when the population standard deviation is known and another for when the population standard deviation is unknown. There are seven proposed equations to calculate the confidence interval for the population mean of a dichotomous variable: normal approximation interval, Wilson interval, Jeffreys interval, Clopper-Pearson, Agresti-Coull, arcsine transformation, and logit transformation. In this study, I compared the percent effectiveness of each equation using a Monte Carlo analysis and the interval range over a range …
The Suicide Archive(S): Literary Resistance In The Wake Of French Empire, Doyle David Calhoun
The Suicide Archive(S): Literary Resistance In The Wake Of French Empire, Doyle David Calhoun
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation tracks how literature and aesthetic works figure and extend subversive genealogies of suicidal resistance in former sites of French empire. Despite its pervasiveness as a response to French slavery and (neo)colonial expansion, suicide falls out of frame both in monumentalized accounts of colonization and more recent historiographical work. Despite an immense literature on suicide in metropolitan France from the eighteenth century onward, there is a near total critical silence with respect to the literally countless examples of enslaved or colonized peoples destroying themselves and their cities in deadly acts of resistance against French conquest. My dissertation argues that …
Perception And Perceptual Judgment In Plato’S Theaetetus And Timaeus, Lea Schroeder
Perception And Perceptual Judgment In Plato’S Theaetetus And Timaeus, Lea Schroeder
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation develops an account of perception in the Theaetetus and the Timaeus, two so-called “late” writings of Plato that I argue theorize distinct but complementary aspects of perception. On the overall view that emerges from these writings, perception is anchored in the world – an instance of perception directly presents to the soul the worldly objects that caused it. At the same time, perception by itself precludes awareness of what is perceived as something or other, and ordinary perceptual experiences that do involve such awareness are hybrid mental states that fuse perception, memory, and (subpersonal) judgment. The resulting account …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
IMPORTANCE: Research into the genetic and genomic ("genomics") foundations of disease is central to our understanding of disease prevention, early detection, diagnostic accuracy, and therapeutic intervention. Inequitable participation in genomics research by historically excluded populations limits the ability to translate genomic knowledge to achieve health equity and ensure that findings are generalizable to diverse populations.
OBSERVATIONS: We propose a novel framework for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in genomics research. Building on principles of community-based participatory research and collective impact frameworks, the framework can guide our understanding of the social, cultural, health system, policy, community, and individual contexts in which …
Supporting Informational Text Comprehension: One Educator’S Scaffolding During Instruction In Kindergarten, Nicole M. Martin
Supporting Informational Text Comprehension: One Educator’S Scaffolding During Instruction In Kindergarten, Nicole M. Martin
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Educators’ support when using informational text in kindergarten is foundational to children’s comprehension and future learning. Prior research has not offered clear insight into their help when children experience difficulties during informational text comprehension instruction. The current study examined one kindergarten educator’s support. Mrs. Swanson’s teaching was observed two to three times per week for 15 weeks, and lesson artifacts were collected. Discourse analytic coding procedures, constant comparison, and thematic analysis revealed that the educator consistently provided verbal scaffolding but inconsistently supported the individual children who were experiencing comprehension difficulty. An expanded focus on educators’ scaffolding at children’s points of …
The Status Of Phonics Instruction: Learning From The Teachers, Sherry Sanden, Deborah A. Macphee, Luminita Hartle, Stephen Poggendorf, Caleb Zuiderveen
The Status Of Phonics Instruction: Learning From The Teachers, Sherry Sanden, Deborah A. Macphee, Luminita Hartle, Stephen Poggendorf, Caleb Zuiderveen
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Increasingly alarmed by instructional mandates more founded on journalistic rhetoric and popular opinion than on research findings or practitioner expertise, researchers gathered survey data from teachers to better understand the status of K–2 phonics instruction. Data demonstrate that the overwhelming majority of these K–2 teachers teach phonics, rely on a published curriculum, and teach phonics in systematic and explicit ways. These findings contradict media assertions that reading classrooms are largely devoid of phonics instruction and that teachers fail to include phonics as an important element of their reading instruction. Implications include calls for researchers to explore what teachers can share …
“Pockets Of Hope”: Changing Representations Of Diversity In Newbery Medal–Winning Titles, Kathleen A. Paciga, Melanie D. Koss
“Pockets Of Hope”: Changing Representations Of Diversity In Newbery Medal–Winning Titles, Kathleen A. Paciga, Melanie D. Koss
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Newbery Medal–winning books provide cultural models for children’s developing cultural understandings of themselves and others. This article presents results of a critical content analysis that used sociocultural and historical lenses to examine representations of race/ethnicity, gender, and ability of main characters across the Newbery-winning corpus and how these representations have changed over the history of the award, 1922–2019. Findings present a lack of consistent diverse representation across all fields, with increased diverse representation in the most recent decades. The discussion contextualizes findings against historical events. Understanding the representations of diversity in these texts and the historical contexts within which such …

Edel 455: Approaches To Content Literacy For Diverse Learners (Spring 2022), Deborah Agar
Open Course Materials
This course builds upon previous literacy coursework to explore how to develop students’ content literacy, with special attention to culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) learners. It provides theoretical foundations for conceptualizing language and literacy learning that are rooted in Scientifically Based Reading Research (SBRR), sociocultural theory, systemic functional linguistics, and culturally and linguistically responsive teaching. Central course learning activities include: (1) practicing effective strategies for supporting students’ literacy development across content areas; (2) deconstructing school-based texts to analyze how text structure and language features relate to purpose, audience, and voice; and (3) designing content/language integrated lessons. Through this course, students …

Does The Choice Of Words In The Fed’S Board Of Governors’ Speeches Matter?, Abhinav Anand, Sankarshan Basu, Jalaj Pathak, Ashok Thampy
Working Papers
Yes it does. The US stock market index shows significant statistical association with the tone of Fed speeches on the day the speech is delivered. We find that negative speeches depress returns and amplify volatility. The stock market moves more strongly in response to forward-looking speeches, and to speeches whose tone is negative. We capture financial texts’ tone better than current techniques due to two innovations introduced in this study: i) a sentence-based ngram analysis that quantifies the connotation of multi-clausal phrases (e.g., ‘a slowdown in business profitability’); and ii) usage of an augmented financial dictionary which incorporates ‘valence shifters’: …

It Won’T Be Easy, Allison Arkush
It Won’T Be Easy, Allison Arkush
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
Interdisciplinary artist Allison Arkush engages a wide range of materials, modalities, and research in her practice. In It Won’t Be Easy, Arkush places and piles her multimedia sculptures throughout the gallery to create installations that overlap with her writing and poetry, sometimes layering in (or extending out to) audio and video components. This approach facilitates the probing exploration of prevailing value systems through a flattening of hierarchies among and between humans, the other-than-human, and the inanimate—though no less lively. Her work meditates on and ‘vendiagrams’ things forsaken and sacred, the traumatic and nostalgic. The exhibition title acknowledges that the …

Spanish Language Development And Perceptions Of Undergraduate Students During Short-Term Study Abroad, Marissa Baugh
Transformations: Presentation Slides
The purpose of this evaluative case study is to determine how students from a 4-year medium-sized college in the northeast US who participated in a short-term study abroad program in Cuernavaca, Mexico perceived their experience as worthwhile in their education. This research seeks to answer the following questions: 1) How does short-term study abroad impact students’ perceived level of Spanish language proficiency?; 2) What are students’ thoughts about short-term study abroad with respect to their learning beyond their Spanish language development (e.g., financial investment, cultural appreciation, etc.)?; and 3) What are students’ overall perceptions of the short-term study abroad program? …

Text Types, Computers, And Teaching: How Do They Work Together?, Esra Ceker
Transformations: Presentation Slides
Research in applied linguistics has shown that different text types (e.g., news reportage, fiction, academic prose) are characterized by a high frequency of co‐occurring grammatical features which work together to convey the particular communicative purpose of the text type. This presentation shows how corpus‐linguistic methodology combines quantitative and qualitative analyses to determine what these grammatical features are and how they complement each other in the expression of the text type's specific communicative purpose. Awareness of such grammatical foundation of different text types is of utmost importance to language teachers and learners. The presentation closes with examples of practical applications in …
Transnational Migrant Deterrence, Anita Sinha
Transnational Migrant Deterrence, Anita Sinha
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
The governance of global migration increasingly relies on what critical migration scholarship refers to as externalized control. Externalization encompasses limiting human mobility through the imposition of migration control measures by transit states, as well as by states that are geographically proximate to destination states. Destination states are at a minimum complicit in the creation and operation of these externalized migration control systems. To capture this phenomenon, this Article offers a reconceptualization of externalization as transnational migration deterrence. The objective ofthis nomenclature is to provide a framework that highlights the role of destination states, to build a lexicon of accountability for …
The Cornbread Country: Cornbread And The Development Of Southern Identity, Ashton Doar
The Cornbread Country: Cornbread And The Development Of Southern Identity, Ashton Doar
Senior Theses
Following the chronological development of the American South from the pre-colonial era to the present day, this thesis analyzes the importance of cornbread in relation to historical circumstances. Native Americans, British settlers, early Americans, and self-identifying Southerners all related to the land and to its food in unique ways. Narrowing the scope of this broad topic to the specific point of cornbread allows for an analysis of the continuity and change of people's circumstances and life experience, as well as the ways in which people define themselves by their food.
We Are All Eve: Rescuing The Mother Of All Things From Patriarchal Interpretation And Its Implications For Modern Christian Women, Maeve Pioli
Senior Theses
For centuries, the traditional Christian understanding of the Genesis narrative has relied heavily on the patriarchal biases of historic church figures to enforce a gendered hierarchy where women are deprived of authority, voice, and agency. My thesis deconstructs these misogynistic interpretations to provide liberating, alternative readings for the Garden of Eden as well as New Testament verses that utilize Eve’s transgression to justify women’s secondary status. As a former Christian, I have witnessed the persistence of this oppressive theology, often repackaged as a “complementary” relationship between sexes where women must dutifully submit to the headship of men. Therefore, by building …
Disaggregating Legislative Intent, Jesse M. Cross
Disaggregating Legislative Intent, Jesse M. Cross
Fordham Law Review
In statutory interpretation, theorists have long argued that the U.S. Congress is a “they,” not an “it.” Under this view, Congress is plural and nonhierarchical, and so it is incapable of forming a single, institutional intent. Textualists contend that this vision of Congress means interpreters must move away from concerns about intent altogether, and that they instead should speak in the register of textualism and its associated constitutional values, such as notice and congressional incentivization. However, even if legislators’ intentions never coalesce into an institutional intent, a disaggregated-intent theory of legislation remains possible. Under this theory, statutes are understood as …
