"Je Vous Donne Toute Mon Âme" : Une Traduction De L'Intimité Féminine Dans Isidora De George Sand, Shelby M. Kruger

Impact Of Traditional Versus Alternative Assessment On Student Achievement, Beth Lustgarten
Impact Of Traditional Versus Alternative Assessment On Student Achievement, Beth Lustgarten
Honors Projects
The focus of this study looks at the effect of alternative assessment on student achievement in a high school science classroom. Within this action research, students have choices and are able to demonstrate creativity in their alternative assessments. By comparing student results from traditional and alternative assessments, the impact of assessment showed students had an overwhelming preference for completing alternative assessments, and a majority of students did better on the alternative assessment when compared to the traditional assessment.

This paper explores the integration of art assessments with cancer patients as a tool for determining potential scholarly value. Qualitative data was collected from two clinicians who ran weekly art therapy groups with women who are undergoing or who have survived breast cancer treatment. Both groups were 10 week modules structured as open studio groups, and each clinician was subsequently interviewed by the researchers who used a series of formatted questions to assess how the four art assessments were offered to participants, how participants responded to the invitation to engage in assessments, and how the clinician’s reflected on patients’ experiences …
Climate Without Context: Why Climate Change Journalism Is Losing Its Effect, Amanda L. Valentine
Climate Without Context: Why Climate Change Journalism Is Losing Its Effect, Amanda L. Valentine
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
Despite the growing frequency and severity of climate disasters, the news coverage of these events hardly shocks the public like it used to. Environmental journalism has become more “voluminous,” but less complex, ultimately sacrificing quality over quantity to cover as many climate-related events as possible. By analyzing the word choice, key frames, and contexts of climate articles featured in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times over the past five years, this study finds that the frequent decontextualization of climate events and a focus on political actions has banalized climate journalism and rendered it ineffectual.
The Economics Of Information And The Meaning Of Speech, Charles W. Collier
The Economics Of Information And The Meaning Of Speech, Charles W. Collier
Catholic University Law Review
In common usage the communication of information is not sharply distinguished from the use of language or speech to make factual or propositional statements. So it should come as no surprise that one of the main legal justifications for protecting speech--that it underwrites a “marketplace of ideas” and thereby contributes to the search for truth--has strong parallels in the economic theory of information. “Indeed,” as Kenneth Arrow writes, “the market system as a whole has frequently been considered as an organization for the allocation of resources; the typical argument for its superiority to authoritative central allocation has been the greater …
Heirs Of An Administration: Unlawful Executive Actions, Jerome Perez
Heirs Of An Administration: Unlawful Executive Actions, Jerome Perez
Catholic University Law Review
The Supreme Court of the United States in DHS v. Regents on June 18, 2020, decided to stall the Trump administration from rescinding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy that the Obama administration created contrary to the Administrative Procedures Act (APA)––even though in 2016 the Supreme Court affirmed a preliminary injunction on the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA) policy, which mirrors DACA. This blunder offhandedly sacrifices the Supreme Court’s reputation as nonpartisan by enlisting itself as the future arbiter of administrative issues with self-evident resolutions and deciding contrary to those resolutions to endorse a political agenda. …

Composition, Computers, And Covid-19: The Roles Of Multimodal Composition And Digital Technology In The Covid-19 Pandemic., Michael P. Lynn
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
The shift toward remote and online learning brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on teaching multimodal composition at all levels. Part of this shift towards rethinking multimodal composition came from the challenges of moving what would be in person classes online. Drawing on the New London Group’s definition of multimodality (1996), this thesis examines the relationship between remote learning throughout the pandemic and the modalities and technologies used by composition instructors and students in first-year writing. Using interviews with six first-year writing instructors from a private university, this project explores how instructors encouraged students to …

Maximizing Linguistic Distance Between Good And Bad Product Names When Competing In Global Markets, N/A
Defensive Publications Series
A technology directed to using deep learning to help users in the advertising space, domain name recommendation space, search result generation space, username suggestion space, or any related area is described. The deep learning technique can embed linguistic features of words in a latent space and perform mathematical functions to determine the similarity and/or relatedness between a target word and words that should be avoided in particular target languages. This can be advantageous for individuals in these spaces who are presented with options for good or product names to be used in global markets and/or in markets that are a …
Schism And Suppression: Early Threats To The Esperanto Language, And Resulting Impacts On International Acceptance, Anabel E. Cull
Schism And Suppression: Early Threats To The Esperanto Language, And Resulting Impacts On International Acceptance, Anabel E. Cull
Young Historians Conference
The constructed language of Esperanto, created by Polish linguist Ludovic Lazarus Zamenhof in 1887, was founded with the intention of facilitating global peace and unification. Due to the mission and philosophy of the language, known as Esperantism, Zamenhof’s invention gained popularity among political reformers and communities facing religious discrimination. Aiming to resolve conflict through common language, Esperantism inspired hope amidst the increasingly oppressive social and political climate present in Eastern Europe and Russia during the early 1900’s. This paper explores the contributing factors to Esperanto’s decline, and the impact of internal conflict, political affiliation, and religious significance on efforts to …
Standing On Its Own Shoulders: The Supreme Court's Statutory Interpretation Of The Federal Arbitration Act, Kristen M. Blankley
Standing On Its Own Shoulders: The Supreme Court's Statutory Interpretation Of The Federal Arbitration Act, Kristen M. Blankley
Akron Law Review
Empirical evidence on the Supreme Court’s use of tools of statutory interpretation is an emerging field of legal study. This Article is the first to use these methodologies to analyze the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA), enacted in 1925. I analyzed 114 separate Supreme Court arbitration opinions, coding for fourteen different tools of statutory interpretation. This article presents the results of that analysis. The most striking finding from this study is the extraordinarily insular nature of the FAA jurisprudence compared to other scholars’ studies in their respective areas of the law. This nature can be determined statistically from the Supreme Court’s …

Correlates Of Custodial Grandparents’ Perceived Barriers To The Use Of Services, Bert Hayslip, Julian Montoro-Rodriguez, Jennifer Ramsey
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
Getting timely access to help, information, and a variety of services is paramount among the challenges of raising a grandchild, and grandparents face a variety of internal and external barriers in getting such help. The present pilot exploratory study focused on caregiving-related and personal resource variables best associated with minority grandparent caregivers’ perceptions of barriers to receiving services. In contrast to previous work, the present study focused on African American and Latino grandparent caregivers. Fifty grandparents (M age = 58.59) of minority status (African American, Latino, Philippine) raising their grandchildren completed measures assessing caregiver strain, social support, resilience, self-care, …

Press Any Button To Get Started: Approaching Japanese Culture And Society Through Video Games, Amanda Weber
East Asian Studies Honors Papers
This project argues for inclusion of video games into the liberal arts curriculum alongside more traditional texts. Three Japanese-developed video games are analyzed in terms of their appropriateness for the Ursinus Quest curriculum while also exploring their appropriation of characters, themes, and values from Japanese mytho-history. My approach incorporates the methodology introduced by the scholar James Paul Gee who studies video games through the lens of semiotics and gaming theory. Gee defines key elements presented in video games as ‘lifeworld domains,’ which incorporate cultures, societies, and individual and group experiences. The value of video games resides in the players’ development …

A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Investigation Of Teachers’ Perspectives Towards Integrating Culture Into Chinese-As-Aforeign-Language (Cfl) Curricula And Instruction In American High Schools, Xuan Song
ETD Archive
The importance of integrating culture into foreign language teaching and learning has been acknowledged in the U.S. by the National Standards in Foreign Language Education Project and foreign language professionals. However, it remains challenging for Chinese-as-a-Foreign-Language (CFL) teachers to embrace this concept thoroughly and implement it effectively in their CFL classes. The study explores six CFL teachers’ perceptions and experiences towards culture and language integration into their CFL curricula and instruction in American high schools. This study aims to describe the overall landscape of culture-language integration in the CFL discipline in American high schools by revealing the essential knowledge of …

Decolonizing And Diversifying French Curriculum In Twin Cities K-12 Schools, Helen Radovic
Decolonizing And Diversifying French Curriculum In Twin Cities K-12 Schools, Helen Radovic
French Honors Projects
French classes in United States K-12 schools are still largely Paris-Centric and targeted towards a white/upper-class student demographic. The purpose of this study is to examine K-12 French teacher’s strategies in promoting diversity in their classrooms, and what effect this has on student engagement. Participants include eight K-12 French immersion teachers in the Twin Cities (Minnesota). Results from the study are complex and varied, however, they indicate that use of authentic resources and connection to students’ personal interests and culture are major ways in which the French curriculum can be reshaped to promote diversity and engagement.

Resurrecting Gaelic: Modernity And Heritage Language Revival In Scotland In A Comparative Perspective, Sean Coady
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Many people from across the world have little or no connection to their heritage languages. Whether this loss is caused by conquest, colonialization, or simply lack of parent-child transmission, many believe that they are missing an integral part of their cultural identity and want to reclaim the languages of their forebearers. There is wide debate about how, why, and if this linguistic reclamation and revitalization should happen because, in the face of modernity and language evolution, the best solutions are not always clear. What constitutes successful language revitalization in the modern world, and why does it happen? Gaelic in Scotland …

Implications Of Metalinguistic Awareness On Early Childhood Word-Referent Mapping, Zinan Yang
Implications Of Metalinguistic Awareness On Early Childhood Word-Referent Mapping, Zinan Yang
Linguistics Honors Projects
Children exhibit word-referent learning mechanisms like statistical learning (SL) proposed by Yu and Smith (2007) and propose-but-verify (PBV) mechanisms proposed by Medina (2011), but prior work has yet to investigate how children develop metalinguistic awareness within these two approaches. To evaluate the differences in corpus data predictions of the SL and PBV mechanisms, this study proposes a learning bias: an Extralinguistic Reference Bias. Statistical learning predicts a constrained trajectory of children’s development of metalinguistic awareness. Children younger than approximately age 5 have limited access to metalinguistic language use while they are engaged in the initial mapping of forms to their …

Linguistically And Culturally Responsive Teaching For Ll In The Mainstream Classroom: Planning Tools And Other Classroom Resources, Emily L. Macarthur
Masters Projects
An increasingly diverse student population, including English Language Learners (LL), are continuing to integrate into U.S. schools in recent years. Without the proper training and tools, teachers are struggling to meet the needs of LL in the classroom. This project argues for the inclusion of linguistically and culturally responsive teaching methods and curriculum choices for implementation in a mainstream classroom. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Literacy Shifts call for LL to meet the same rigorous standards as their Native English-speaking (NES) peers, and so the planning tools and other resources described in this project reflect the CCSS’ focus on …

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic requires urgent implementation of effective community-engaged strategies to enhance education, awareness, and inclusion of underserved communities in prevention, mitigation, and treatment efforts. The Texas Community-Engagement Alliance Consortium was established with support from the United States’ National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct community-engaged projects in selected geographic locations with a high proportion of medically underserved minority groups with a disproportionate burden of COVID-19 disease and hospitalizations. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of the Consortium. The Consortium organized seven projects with focused activities to address COVID-19 clinical and vaccine trials …
A Multidisciplinary Mentoring Approach To Improve The Equity Of Nursing Education For The English Language Learner In An Undergraduate Nursing Program: A Mixed-Method Quality Improvement Project, Laurie Bisila
DNP and Student Works
This quality improvement (QI) project is a multidisciplinary approach to mentoring, matching a doctorate of nurse practice (DNP) student in their final year and a second-semester post-baccalaureate (PBN) nursing English language learner (ELL) student who is enrolled in an accelerated nursing program in a small Midwest private college. This QI project seeks to answer two questions. First, will a DNP mentor who is trained in the principles of cultural Competemility improve the sense of belongingness for the ELL undergraduate nursing student through six weekly mentoring sessions using the 12 domains in Purnell's model as a guideline? Secondly, does training on …
Parental Sleep When Their Child Is Sick: A Phased Principle-Based Concept Analysis, Stephanie Smith, Mary Tallon, James Smith, Charlotte Angelhoff, Evalotte Mörelius
Parental Sleep When Their Child Is Sick: A Phased Principle-Based Concept Analysis, Stephanie Smith, Mary Tallon, James Smith, Charlotte Angelhoff, Evalotte Mörelius
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Sleep is a common challenge for parents with sick children and can impact parents' health, wellbeing, and caregiving responsibilities. Despite the vast research around parental sleep when their child is sick, the concept is not clearly defined. A phased principle-based concept analysis that includes triangulation of methods and quality criteria assessment was used to explore how the concept is described, used, and measured in the current literature. The aim was to analyse and clarify the conceptual, operational, and theoretical basis of parental sleep when their child is sick to produce an evidence-based definition and to identify knowledge gaps. A systematic …
The Science Of Art “Faithfully Presented”: Entropy In British Victorian Literature, Hannah Harris
The Science Of Art “Faithfully Presented”: Entropy In British Victorian Literature, Hannah Harris
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
In the chemical world, entropy, or the randomness and chaos of a system, must continually increase; it is much more favorable for things to fall apart than to be put together. This scientific concept can also be rightly applied to the study of literature. While it is true books contain information put together into some sense of order from chaos, making them counterintuitive to entropy, I am convinced these works must still obey the laws of thermodynamics. There must be an increase in chaos somewhere, and if it is not within the words themselves, it must lie within the ideas …
