The Negative Impact Of Advertising On Human Growth & Development, Juliana Levin Apr 2022

The Negative Impact Of Advertising On Human Growth & Development, Juliana Levin

Academic Festival

Advertisements affect us in many ways, some that have a lasting impact psychologically beginning at childhood. The industry attempts to manipulate several aspects of a child’s life while their brain is not developed enough for them to think for themselves. This ranges from things like food to more emotional exploitation involving self-esteem and body image. Ads are an aspect of the media that can have a major impact on growth and development all the way from childhood into teen years and beyond. Advertisements can have negative effects on human growth and development, such as harm to self-esteem/body image as well …

How Class Disparities Effect Cognitive Deficits In School Age Children Leading To An Enduring Circle Of Poverty, Catherine Keane Apr 2022

How Class Disparities Effect Cognitive Deficits In School Age Children Leading To An Enduring Circle Of Poverty, Catherine Keane

Academic Festival

When you take a step back and look at a low-income community and its members compared to a high-income community and its members its no secret that even in a constitutionally equal country, those of the low-income community undergo significant disadvantages. This is the result of an enduring circle of poverty that is constantly strengthened by a system that favors the upper class. The circle of poverty is a figurative model that provides explanation for how poverty and wealth juxtapose one another in society. Therefore, making it increasingly harder for someone from a low socioeconomic status to break away from …

American Gibraltar: Key West During World War Ii, Abraham H. Gibson Apr 2022

American Gibraltar: Key West During World War Ii, Abraham H. Gibson

Florida Historical Quarterly

As visitors and locals alike will attest, there is no other place in America quite like Key West. Separated from the Florida peninsula by more than a hundred miles, the island city lies closer to Havana than Miami. The archipelago to which it belongs not only boasts the only tropical climate in the lower forty-eight, but also features flora and fauna found nowhere else on Earth. Even the ground underfoot is unique. A mere hundred thousand years ago, Key West was not only underwater, but alive. Its entire surface teemed with millions of tiny coral which slowly built the island's …

"The Most Exotic Of Our Cities": Race, Place, Writing, And George Allan England's Key West, Philip Levy Apr 2022

"The Most Exotic Of Our Cities": Race, Place, Writing, And George Allan England's Key West, Philip Levy

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the late 1920s, a prominent American writer arrived in Key West. He and his wife came to this Florida backwater to escape chilly winters and to carve out time for writing. Once settled in town, the writer gradually eased into the rhythms of Key West life. He built personal connections and began observing local characters who, in time, would re-emerge in his stories. He liked boats and the outdoors life. He had an inclination toward dangerous adventures and enjoyment of killing animals as well as an ability to convey these sentiments to audiences through popular literature. While in the …

Introduction: This Incomperable Lande, Maurice O'Sullivan Apr 2022

Introduction: This Incomperable Lande, Maurice O'Sullivan

Florida Historical Quarterly

Taking their cue from Michael Gannon, Florida's historians are fond of pointing out that by the time Jamestown was founded, St. Augustine was ready for urban renewal. Our state's literary scholars add that long before the Virginia Company established Jamestown, Florida already had an extensive library of works in three languages. From the beginning, that linguistic diversity would mark the region's literary tradition. While many of the earliest works about Florida, from Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca's La Relacion (popularly known as Naufragios) in 1542 to the Gentleman of Elvas' history of DeSoto's expedition in 1557, were in Spanish, other …

A Translation History Of Fontaneda, Peter Ferdinando Apr 2022

A Translation History Of Fontaneda, Peter Ferdinando

Florida Historical Quarterly

The captivity of Hernando de Escalante Fontaneda by the Calusa Indians led to the creation of a series of documents that vividly depict the indigenous peoples of southern Florida. These writings clearly have proto-ethnographic qualities. Students of Florida history and archaeology have frequently utilized this information to better understand native peoples who lived on the peninsula.2 In the case of Fontaneda's writings, however, we must ask vital questions about translation. He wrote in sixteenth century Spanish, yet the current lingua franca of the academic and research community in the United States is the English of the twenty-first century. This paper …

The Dissection of Twins

Amber Zipfel

Professor Colin Rafferty

ENGL 470C_01: Creative Writing Seminar: Non-Fiction

This body of work is composed of ten short pieces that dissect several aspects of twins in approximately 7,000 words. The structure of the work, which involves every piece mirroring another one with the same or similar title, is meant to resemble the relationship of twins: two labeled with the same title but possess different content within their bodies. Overall, there are personal stories and informative breakdowns of twin stereotypes utilized to convey this popular subject. Each piece helps strengthen the primary goals of this …

The Nature Of Word Errors And Response Time In Individuals With Aphasia, Alexandra M. Georges Apr 2022

The Nature Of Word Errors And Response Time In Individuals With Aphasia, Alexandra M. Georges

ETD Archive

Anomia is a relevant language deficit secondary to aphasia that is treated in the speech-language pathologist profession. Most aphasia diagnoses utilize aspects of confrontational naming tasks during speech therapy or testing. This study investigated the nature of word errors and the response time (RT) in persons with aphasia (PWA). Six individuals, three with nonfluent and three with fluent aphasia were asked to name objects in four common categories (occupational tools, everyday objects, food, and clothing) presented under two conditions (1) picture objects on a computer screen and (2) real physical objects. To measure RT and word error, participants were instructed …

Bildungsroman And Trauma In Harper Lee’S To Kill A Mockingbird And Dorothy Allison’S Bastard Out Of Carolina, Bernadette D'Auria Apr 2022

Bildungsroman And Trauma In Harper Lee’S To Kill A Mockingbird And Dorothy Allison’S Bastard Out Of Carolina, Bernadette D'Auria

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Scholars have long viewed Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird as a young girl’s Bildungsroman. Through an adult Scout’s reflection on her childhood, Lee takes her readers on a journey that has traditionally been categorized as a young girl’s growth from naivete to maturity. While Scout is witness to the impacts and traumas of racism in Maycomb, scholars have often overlooked Scout’s ambivalent attitude regarding these events. Scout sentimentalizes Maycomb and rarely processes or reacts to the traumatic events that encompass her childhood, leaving Lee’s narrative a poor example of a growth towards maturity. In contrast, the coming-of-age arc in …

Insular Interconnectivity In The Viking Age: A Geospatial View From Norse Jarlshof, Trent Michael Carney Apr 2022

Insular Interconnectivity In The Viking Age: A Geospatial View From Norse Jarlshof, Trent Michael Carney

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

During the Viking Age, settlements and trading centers were often located near lakes, seas, waterways, and sailing routes. As such, access to other locations was facilitated, whether for the purpose of settlement, trade, resource acquisition, or conflict, by some form of seafaring vessel or watercraft. Over the course of the Scandinavian Diaspora, a level of cultural and economic interconnectedness was maintained between mainland Scandinavia and the settlements in the North Atlantic region. This shared link with Scandinavia contributed to the development of local connections between insular and coastal sites within the broader diasporic network. This thesis considers the archaeological evidence …

Inferno Of The Mind, Amber M. Harvey Apr 2022

Inferno Of The Mind, Amber M. Harvey

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This chapbook is a series of poems that explore what it is like living with mental illness. It is a collection of ten poems, inspired by the nine circles of hell in Dante’s Inferno. The reader is led on a journey through the mind of the author, each poem providing a modern interpretation of each circle: Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, Heresy, Violence, Fraud, and Treachery. This journey into a “hell of the mind’s making” explores the themes of identity, reality, societal expectations and pressures, and self-doubt through the use of form, structure, and image. The collection ends with a …

Dorothy Allison's Gothic Poverty, Jessica Morin Apr 2022

Dorothy Allison's Gothic Poverty, Jessica Morin

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper explores how the gothic spaces in Dorothy Allison’s novels are connected to her characters class. I analyze specific places in Bastard out of Carolina and Cavedweller and how these spaces are either redeemed or remain gothic throughout the novels, and how this connects to the characters economic status. In Bastard out of Carolina, where the characters begin and remain poor, places are either gothic from the beginning or are safe spaces that transform into gothic places over the course of the novel. Conversely, in Cavedweller, where the characters begin poor but become financially stable by the end of …

Unearthing The Witch: Reckoning With Gender, Magic, And The Unusual Dead Within Anglo-Saxon Deviant Burials, Samantha Melvin Apr 2022

Unearthing The Witch: Reckoning With Gender, Magic, And The Unusual Dead Within Anglo-Saxon Deviant Burials, Samantha Melvin

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

The fifth to seventh centuries CE, or the Migration Period, marked the development of Anglo-Saxon culture and society in England. The early Anglo-Saxons are known largely through their material culture and mortuary practices, left behind in medieval cemeteries that twist their way across the English landscape. The remains of early Anglo-Saxons tell rich and interesting histories about past peoples, but within the broader landscapes of these cemeteries are deviant burials. These are burials that are specifically typified as ones that ‘deviate’ from the norm, usually indicating that the inhumed individual was punished in death for actions committed in life. These …

Falling For Moses: The Role Of Stroop Inhibition And Language Expertise, Isabella Holmgren Apr 2022

Falling For Moses: The Role Of Stroop Inhibition And Language Expertise, Isabella Holmgren

Honors Theses

When presented with the question, “How many animals of each kind did Moses take on the Ark?”, people often respond “2”, despite knowing that Noah is the Biblical figure who is said to have taken animals on the ark. This phenomenon where people fail to detect inaccuracies in text has come to be known as the Moses Illusion (Erickson & Mattson, 1981). The current study was designed to investigate Moses illusion rates in a multiple-choice format. Further, participants were assessed on two cognitive constructs: language experience and cognitive inhibition. Results showed robust rates of the Moses illusion using the multiple-choice …

Obtaining And Retaining Men In Higher Education, Shelby Hanselman Apr 2022

Obtaining And Retaining Men In Higher Education, Shelby Hanselman

Masters Projects

Men have historically outnumbered women in higher education until recent years. Research shows that women are not only more likely to enroll in college, but also are more likely to complete a degree than men. Increasing literature works to explain the potential factors that aid in explaining the gender gap in higher education. As college enrollment continues to decline, it is crucial to provide men with the interventions needed to guide their success. This project describes a semester-long educational program for first-year college men with the goal to educate them on male identities, barriers, and the skills needed to be …

Shakespeare’S The Merchant Of Venice, Qanon And Blood Libel, Georga Hackworth Apr 2022

Shakespeare’S The Merchant Of Venice, Qanon And Blood Libel, Georga Hackworth

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, QAnon, and Blood Libel explores the contemporary relevance of the work of Shakespeare. The Jewish blood libel was first mentioned by Socrates. Whether Socrates was literal or using an allegory is unknown. What is known, is the story was repeated and used as the basis for a conspiracy theory targeting Jews stating they kill Christian Children to make unleavened Passover bread. This idea has resulted in stereotypes and Jews being the scapegoats for all the ills of the world. William Shakespeare played on this idea in The Merchant of Venice, using a blood libel to …

Native Hawaiian Caregivers' Cultural Perspectives Of Pediatric Asthma Management, Donna-Marie Palakiko Apr 2022

Native Hawaiian Caregivers' Cultural Perspectives Of Pediatric Asthma Management, Donna-Marie Palakiko

Dissertations

Asthma remains the leading cause of chronic respiratory illness among Native Hawaiian children 0 to 17 years in Hawai'i. The National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) established asthma management guidelines which includes medical assessment and monitoring, education in partnership with the caregiver, control of environmental triggers, and medication adherence (National Asthma Education Prevention Program [NAEPP], 2007).
However, these guidelines do not consider the worldview, health beliefs, and cultural practices of caregiver, child, and family.

The purpose of this study was to describe how Native Hawaiian caregivers manage pediatric asthma, to understand which strategies are considered cultural practices, and to …

Barriers To Public Health In Latino American Indigenous Communities, Wilzave Quiles Guzman Apr 2022

Barriers To Public Health In Latino American Indigenous Communities, Wilzave Quiles Guzman

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

This paper focuses on barriers to public health in Latino American Indigenous communities. Indigenous people throughout the world are at a public health disadvantage due to a lack of clearly defined practices within the decision-making processes to plan, evaluate, and control finances from governmental and non-governmental entities in charge of managing health services. I argue that political, social, and institutional changes are still needed to achieve health equity in Indigenous communities and that these changes should go beyond implementing a universal health care program. I must recognize improvements made by many Latino American countries like Brazil, which prepared a plan …

The Impact Of Segregation And Desegregation Policies On Academic Achievement Of Black Students In Delaware Public Schools, Kayla Woods Apr 2022

The Impact Of Segregation And Desegregation Policies On Academic Achievement Of Black Students In Delaware Public Schools, Kayla Woods

Honors Theses

Through a mixed-methods research study that incorporates some data analysis and interviews, I explore the impacts of segregation and desegregation policies on the educational outcomes and experiences of Black students in Delaware Public Schools. I aim to discover differences in achievement and experiences between students that went to Delaware Public Schools during federally-enforced desegregation and the more current era of resegregation of schools. My research questions revolve around the impacts desegregation policy has on educational outcomes, the impact of interracial relationships within schools and out-of-school activities, and cultural capital transfer and acquisition and its impact on educational outcomes. Data analysis …

A Systems Approach To Studying Online Communities, Jeremy Foote Apr 2022

A Systems Approach To Studying Online Communities, Jeremy Foote

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Much early communication research was inspired by systems theory. This approach emphasizes that individuals and groups use communication to interact with and respond to their larger environment and attempts to outline the ways that dif‐ ferent levels interact with each other (e.g., work groups within departments within firms). Many concepts from systems theory—such as emergence and feedback loops—have become integral parts of communication theories. However, until recently, quantitative researchers have struggled to apply a systems approach. Large‐scale, multilevel trace data from online platforms combined with computational advances are enabling a turn back toward systems‐inspired research. I out‐ line four systems‐based …

How Sense Of Belonging Impacts Student Retention: Examining The Experience Of First-Generation Latino/A/X Students Attending Pwis, Maria R. Raab

Masters Projects

Latinx students’ admission rates have increased in most recent years however, Latinx

students still have the lowest degree attainment compared to other ethnic/racial groups (Rodriguez et al., 2021). Research reveals sense of belonging has an impact on retention for first- generation Latino/a/x students attending Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs). Latinx students gain sense of belonging through the support of their peers, faculty, and the institution’s commitment to providing safe campus spaces. The primary purpose of this project is to understand the challenges first-generation Latinx students face and where institutions can provide resources like peer mentor programs to close the degree attainment …

Falling Through The Cracks: Two Understudied Populations In The Criminal Justice System, Ashley Hum Apr 2022

Falling Through The Cracks: Two Understudied Populations In The Criminal Justice System, Ashley Hum

Theses

This capstone project aims to identify gaps in the criminal justice literature by examining how the criminal justice system interacts with demographic groups that have been historically overlooked in traditional criminal justice studies, specifically Asian Americans as a racial/ethnic group and LGBTQIA+ individuals of any race or gender identity.

An overarching narrative and finding in the first two sections of the following project is how constructed identities construct narratives and policies. Importantly, the constructed identities are most often assigned by those in power to Asian Americans or LGBTQIA+ people, rather than created for themselves by in-group members, and then become …

Nominal Incorporation In Shiwilu (Kawapanan): Nouns, Classifiers And The Deceased Marker =Ku’, Pilar Valenzuela

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"Shiwilu is a good representative of the Andes-Amazonia transitional zone, in that it exhibits a mixture of phonological and grammatical traits that are typical of the languages of these two regions (Valenzuela 2015, 2018). The present article addresses a phenomenon that is common in Amazonian languages but absent in the Central Andean families Quechuan and Aymaran: nominal incorporation (Dixon and Aikhenvald 1999: 10; Adelaar with Muysken 2004; Aikhen- vald 2017: 296). In this work, ‘nominal incorporation’ is a cover term to designate the process of inserting into the verb a noun, a classifier, or the deceased marker =ku’."
