Writing Problems And Student Retention: A Quantitative Study Into Contemplation Of Withdrawal Among Undergraduate University Students In Ireland, Irina Ruppo Jul 2022

Writing Problems And Student Retention: A Quantitative Study Into Contemplation Of Withdrawal Among Undergraduate University Students In Ireland, Irina Ruppo

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

This paper examines the results of a quantitative study of the relationship between problems with academic writing and undergraduate student retention. In spite of the evidence that writing problems may affect student attrition, problems with academic writing are not listed as a separate factor in most retention models. Consequently, academic writing is not usually singled out in interventions designed to address student attrition. However, it is possible that the absence of writing issues in retention models is due to the predominant view of writing as a single element within academic studies as opposed to a complex and multi-modal process, involving …

Arabic Image Captioning: The Effect Of Text Pre-Processing On The Attention Weights And The Bleu-N Scores, Nahla Barakat, Moaz Taha Jul 2022

Arabic Image Captioning: The Effect Of Text Pre-Processing On The Attention Weights And The Bleu-N Scores, Nahla Barakat, Moaz Taha

Artificial Intelligence

Image captioning using deep neural networks has recently gained increasing attention, mostly for English langue, with only few studies in other languages. Good image captioning model is required to automatically generate sensible, syntactically and semantically correct captions, which in turn requires good models for both computer vision and natural language processing. The process is more challenging in case of data scarcity, and languages with complex morphological structures like the Arabic language. This was the reason why only limited number of studies have been published for Arabic image captioning, compared to those of English language. In this paper, an efficient deep …

The Gdpr As Privacy Pretext And The Problem Of Co-Opting Privacy, Neil Richards Jul 2022

The Gdpr As Privacy Pretext And The Problem Of Co-Opting Privacy, Neil Richards

UC Law Journal

Privacy and data protection law’s expansion brings with it opportunities for mischief as privacy rules are used pretextually to serve other ends. This Essay examines the problem of such co-option of privacy using a case study of lawsuits in which defendants seek to use the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) to frustrate ordinary civil discovery. In a series of cases, European civil defendants have argued that the GDPR requires them to redact all names from otherwise valid discovery requests for relevant evidence produced under a protective order, thereby turning the GDPR from a rule designed to protect the fundamental …

An Asset-Based Practice For Teaching Bilingual Readers, Emily Zoeller, Allison Briceño Jul 2022

An Asset-Based Practice For Teaching Bilingual Readers, Emily Zoeller, Allison Briceño

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

When working with bilingual readers, teaching for equity means building on students’ linguistic strengths. To do so, we must provide intentionally designed holistic literacy instruction that encourages students to use their full literacy and linguistic repertoire. This article describes an asset-oriented approach called Transliteracy to help teachers leverage and develop students’ cross-linguistic knowledge. We provide an Observation Framework for foundational skills and a Prompting Model to support teachers in implementing Transliteracy, even in English-only settings. Transliteracy offers a model by which we teach from what students already know, and celebrate, rather than ignore, bilingualism as a path to more equitable …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Background: With the aging population, family caregivers provide increasingly complex and intense care for older adults and persons with disabilities. There is growing interest in developing community-based services to support family caregivers. Caregiving occurs around the clock, and caregivers face challenges in accessing community-based services at convenient times owing to the demands of care. Web-based resources hold promise for accessible real-time support. CareNav (TM), a caregiver resource information system, is a web-based platform designed to support real-time universal caregiver assessment, a record of client encounters, development of a care plan, tailored information and resource content, access to web-based caregiver resources, …

How And Why Do Judges Cite Academics? Evidence From The Singapore High Court, Jerrold Soh, Yihan Goh Jul 2022

How And Why Do Judges Cite Academics? Evidence From The Singapore High Court, Jerrold Soh, Yihan Goh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Legal academics were once thought to be parasitic on the work of judges, so much so that citing academic work was said to weaken a judgment’s authority. Recent times have however seen prominent academics appointed to the highest courts, and judicial engagement with academic materials appears to have increased. In this light, this article empirically studies academic citation practices in the Singapore High Court. Using a dataset of 2,772 High Court judgments, we show that citation counts have indeed increased over time, even in this first-instance court. This increase was distributed across most legal areas, and was not limited to, …

Docee: A Large-Scale And Fine-Grained Benchmark For Document-Level Event Extraction, Meihan Tong, Bin Xu, Shuai Wang, Meihuan Han, Yixin Cao, Jiangqi Zhu, Siyu Chen, Lei Hou, Juanzi Li Jul 2022

Docee: A Large-Scale And Fine-Grained Benchmark For Document-Level Event Extraction, Meihan Tong, Bin Xu, Shuai Wang, Meihuan Han, Yixin Cao, Jiangqi Zhu, Siyu Chen, Lei Hou, Juanzi Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Event extraction aims to identify an event and then extract the arguments participating in the event. Despite the great success in sentencelevel event extraction, events are more naturally presented in the form of documents, with event arguments scattered in multiple sentences. However, a major barrier to promote documentlevel event extraction has been the lack of large-scale and practical training and evaluation datasets. In this paper, we present DocEE, a new document-level event extraction dataset including 27,000+ events, 180,000+ arguments. We highlight three features: largescale manual annotations, fine-grained argument types and application-oriented settings. Experiments show that there is still a big …

Early Rumor Detection Using Neural Hawkes Process With A New Benchmark Dataset, Fengzhu Zeng, Wei Gao Jul 2022

Early Rumor Detection Using Neural Hawkes Process With A New Benchmark Dataset, Fengzhu Zeng, Wei Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Little attention has been paid on EArly Rumor Detection (EARD), and EARD performance was evaluated inappropriately on a few datasets where the actual early-stage information is largely missing. To reverse such situation, we construct BEARD, a new Benchmark dataset for EARD, based on claims from fact-checking websites by trying to gather as many early relevant posts as possible. We also propose HEARD, a novel model based on neural Hawkes process for EARD, which can guide a generic rumor detection model to make timely, accurate and stable predictions. Experiments show that HEARD achieves effective EARD performance on two commonly used general …

Cross-Cultural Performativity Of Gender Communication In Heather Raffo’S Nine Parts Of Desire, Shaimaa M. Saeed Jul 2022

Cross-Cultural Performativity Of Gender Communication In Heather Raffo’S Nine Parts Of Desire, Shaimaa M. Saeed

English Language and Literature

Since the mid-twentieth century, the study of gender has constituted a fundamental part of many interdisciplinary research works due to its multi-perspective nature which made it a fertile ground for analysis in diversified fields of science. Discussions over sex/gender distinction and the representation as well as perception of gender ceaselessly exist within controversially enriching, discursive frameworks. In 1990, Judith Butler (1956- ), one of the prominent feminist theorists in the field of gender studies, first coined the concept of “gender performativity,” where she challenged the conventional notions of ethnomethodologists and phenomenologists who restricted the perception and communication of gender to …

The Political Urgency Of Black Manhood: Frederick Douglass On Constitutional Theory, John M. Kang Jul 2022

The Political Urgency Of Black Manhood: Frederick Douglass On Constitutional Theory, John M. Kang

Faculty Scholarship

How did Frederick Douglass—one who was born a slave, one who had been denied all formal education, one who had been sundered from his family, one who had been starved, tortured, and, on occasion, nearly killed—manage to muster the courage to do something as bold as challenge the United States Supreme Court? This Article suggests that Douglass, in order to assert his right as an American citizen, first had to assert his right as a man in an explicitly gendered sense. That is, Douglass had to muster a powerful sense of manliness that could elevate him psychologically to assert his …

Wetlands As Social Ecological Systems, And Relationality In The Policy Domain, Pierre Horwitz Jul 2022

Wetlands As Social Ecological Systems, And Relationality In The Policy Domain, Pierre Horwitz

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

A wetland policy perspective based on social ecological systems accepts that wetlands are part of landwaterscapes, that people are part of wetland ecosystems, and that the health of wetlands and the health of people are interdependent, evidence of the close, reciprocal and indivisible relationships between nature and culture. These relationships are storied and place-based, associated with place attachment, and are representations of relational values. They are most easily located wherever and whenever Indigenous and local peoples’ knowledge and interests are at play in wetland settings. Legal and administrative processes that recognise Chthonic law and rights for wetlands will elevate relational …

El Metadiscurso En La Escritura Académica: Singularidades E Investigaciones En Lengua Española, David Sánchez-Jiménez

Publications and Research

The Elimination Of Political Groups Under International Law And The Constitution Of Political Claims, Farid Samir Benavides-Vanegas Jun 2022

The Elimination Of Political Groups Under International Law And The Constitution Of Political Claims, Farid Samir Benavides-Vanegas

Florida Journal of International Law

In this Article I will show, first, that there are no grounds to hold that the elimination of political groups can be treated as political genocide under international law, and second, that under the doctrine developed in ICTY Prosecutor v. Dusko Tadic there is no need to appeal to that category to obtain the punishment of the perpetrators of crimes against political groups. Nevertheless, I will show that the conceptual structure of crimes against humanity—especially the requirement of being part of a massive of widespread attack—seems to make plausible the question of creating a crime of political genocide. By the …
