Experiential Learning Of School Counselors-In-Training To Work With English Learners, Qi Shi, Cielo Cournoyer, Ashlei Randolph, Matthew Scheffenacker, Jasmine Brown
Experiential Learning Of School Counselors-In-Training To Work With English Learners, Qi Shi, Cielo Cournoyer, Ashlei Randolph, Matthew Scheffenacker, Jasmine Brown
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
While the need for school counselors to support ELs is prominent, school counselors believed they were not well prepared to effectively work with EL students. To inform and strengthen our practice, we engaged in a practitioner inquiry study to understand the lived experiences of school counselors-in-training (SCITs) in an experiential learning activity to work with English Learners. Three themes emerged from the qualitative analysis of classroom observations, SCITs’ reflection journal entries, and transcripts of a focus group: (a) SCITs’ perceived challenges, (b) strategies used to overcome challenges and (c) how this experiential training benefited their future work as a school …
Poetry Under Imperial Order And Seven-Character Metrical Poetry In The Early Tang Dynasty, Shun Liu
Poetry Under Imperial Order And Seven-Character Metrical Poetry In The Early Tang Dynasty, Shun Liu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Linguistic conditions and the refinement of language style are the prerequisite and facilitator for the popularity of specific poetry styles in Chinese classical poetry. The formation of four-character sentence was the linguistic prerequisite for seven-character poetry, and was also the fundamental reason for the decline of four-character poetry relying on “two-two” rhythm. The improvement of seven-character style resulted from imperial order was an important impetus for the rapid development of seven-character poetry. The grammatical reason behind the parallel between seven-character poetry and five-character poetry highlighted their difference, making seven-character lines more suitable to write about scenery, emotion and argument because …
The Three Faces Of Donald Davidson’S Pragmatic Literary Theory, Qiao Zhang
The Three Faces Of Donald Davidson’S Pragmatic Literary Theory, Qiao Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Donald Davidson is mainly interpreted as a pragmatist by the neo-pragmatists. However, Davidson’s pragmatism is more complex regarding its application in literary theory, which presents him through three faces: the neo-pragmatist Davidson, the intentionalist Davidson, and the radical interpreter Davidson. Davidson’s theory of irregular language becomes the basis of the neo-pragmatists’ philosophy of language as a defense of the original status of unfamiliar languages, such as literary language, in linguistic communication. However, there is a conflict between Davidson’s intentionalism and the pluralist hermeneutic of neo-pragmatists. The former accuses the latter of violating Davidson’s long-held anti-conventionalism principle and pleads for a …
Lost In Translation: Implications For Translating Psychometric Tests As Seen With The Nunchi Scale, Jacob A. Larson
Lost In Translation: Implications For Translating Psychometric Tests As Seen With The Nunchi Scale, Jacob A. Larson
Theses and Dissertations
Psychometric tests are often translated from one language into another for use in cultural and cross-cultural psychological research. This tradition has long been a primary method for studying psychological concepts across cultures. A body of literature has been emerging that raises concerns with this process of translation and suggests that psychological concepts may not always translate smoothly across cultures. In what follows, I examine these issues surrounding the translation of psychometric tests. To do this, I gathered survey data for an English translation of the Nunchi Scale, to examine the process of translation and various analytic techniques devised to demonstrate …
Perspectives Of Students With Asd And Their Parents: What Does It Truly Mean To Be Included?, Keara M. Browne
Perspectives Of Students With Asd And Their Parents: What Does It Truly Mean To Be Included?, Keara M. Browne
Theses and Dissertations
Though there are a number of practices identified by researchers and other professionals as inclusive, the question remains about whether the students themselves truly feel included. There has been limited research surrounding specific experiences in inclusive classrooms that students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) perceive to be facilitators and barriers to being included in general education and co-teaching settings. The purpose of this study was to inform educational policies and school practices surrounding the inclusion of students with ASD in general education and co-teaching settings by analyzing the perceptions of students with ASD and their parents to determine what it …

Arctic Navigation And Climate Change: Projections From Science For The Law Of The Sea, Charles H. Norchi, Amanda H. Lynch
Arctic Navigation And Climate Change: Projections From Science For The Law Of The Sea, Charles H. Norchi, Amanda H. Lynch
International Law Studies
The most variable climate conditions on the planet are observable in the Arctic. These conditions affect all forms of life, including the human interactions and social processes that generate law. Among the critical activities affected by climate is navigation, which is subject to national regulations, general maritime laws, and the international law of the sea. As a result of anthropogenic climate change, Arctic climate variability is already moving the system into states that humans in the Industrial Era have not experienced. Most critically, while the end point of unfettered climate change as manifest in the Arctic – an ice-free ocean …
Enhancing The Cognition And Efficacy Of Machine Learning Through Similarity, Vishnu Pendyala, Rakesh Amireddy
Enhancing The Cognition And Efficacy Of Machine Learning Through Similarity, Vishnu Pendyala, Rakesh Amireddy
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Similarity is a key element of machine learning and can make human learning much more effective as well. One of the goals of this paper is to expound on this aspect. We identify real-world concepts similar to hard-to-understand theories to enhance the learning experience and comprehension of a machine learning student. The second goal is to enhance the work in the current literature that uses similarity for transcoding. We uniquely try transcoding from Python to R and vice versa, something that was not attempted before, by identifying similarities in a latent embedding space. We list several real-world analogies to show …

“It Made Me See What Kind Of Teacher I Want To Be:” Critical Literacy In A Pre-Service Literacy Methods Course, Allison Briceño, Claudia Rodriguez-Mojica
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Drawing on critical literacy as a theoretical framework, this paper explores how a children’s book writing assignment designed to center the experiences of underrepresented communities in children’s literature contributed to shifts in awareness among predominantly White teacher candidates. The study occurred at a large urban university in California and included 77 participants who all participated in a required Literacy Methods course in a teacher preparation program. Teacher candidate surveys and critical content analysis of candidate-authored books revealed that candidates: (1) selected topics to write about because they had a personal connection to the issue or because of its relevance to …

Positionality: The Interplay Of Space, Context And Identity, Rebecca Y. Bayeck
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
This article considers the way in which positionality shifts and is formed during a cross-cultural study to reveal the complexity of the insider-outsider status. As a researcher in a male-dominated game setting, I reflect on the research process and my interactions with participants to show the interplay of space, context, and identity in shaping a researcher’s status. I discuss the process of gaining access to the research site and participants, and data collection in relation to space, context, and identity. The interaction of my identities with space, and context informed my status at various moments. This interplay constructs a complex …

Demystifying Implied Terms, Marcus Moore
Demystifying Implied Terms, Marcus Moore
All Faculty Publications
Recent years have witnessed significant interest in demystifying the implication of contract terms. Whilst the discussion thus far has elicited some answers, the subject remains notoriously ‘elusive'. This article advances discussion in the field. It argues that underlying recent debates are deeper issues that must be brought to the surface. These include theoretical incoherence regarding the nature/purpose of implication tracing back to The Moorcock (1889), and analytical indeterminacy in applying the established ‘tests' for implication, as courts vary between conflicting instrumental and non-instrumental approaches. Feeding both issues is inconsistent linguistic use of core terminology. This article helps demystify implication by …
The Intersectionality Of Stuttering And Aging, Mary Elizabeth Herring
The Intersectionality Of Stuttering And Aging, Mary Elizabeth Herring
University Honors Theses
The purpose of this study is to explore relationships between stuttering and aging so that speech-language pathologists can be informed about the intersectionality of these identities.
Three adult men who stutter, all over the age of 65, were interviewed in semi-structured interviews. Interview transcripts were analyzed with in-vivo coding to find codes and themes between participants. From the interviews, 20 categories were identified. These categories were then funneled into four overarching themes: 1) Personal factors impacted by stuttering, 2) Stuttering perspectives across the lifespan, 3) Stuttering therapy experiences, and 4) Covert stuttering.
This study shows that attitudes, perspectives, and experiences …
Multimodal Vocabulary Instruction: An Approach For Supporting Reading Comprehension, Mary K. Van Singel
Multimodal Vocabulary Instruction: An Approach For Supporting Reading Comprehension, Mary K. Van Singel
Masters Theses
Children bring a wide range of vocabulary knowledge and prior experiences with them when they enter school. Research suggests that in order to bridge childrens’ word knowledge and the word knowledge needed for academic success, teachers must take on a multimodal instructional approach to foster vocabulary development and reading comprehension in students. This project explores how word knowledge develops in children as well as various research based features of vocabulary instruction to support word learning in the classroom. The project is designed to offer teachers professional development that works to grow teacher expertise for what effective vocabulary instruction is, the …

C60 Hydrofullerene Induced Autophagy And Ameliorated Gfap In H2o2 Treated Human Malignant Glioblastoma U-373 Cell Line, Aryan M. Faraj, Can A. Agca, Victor S. Nedzvetsky, Artem A. Tykhomyrov
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Glioblastoma is one of the most combative astrocytoma that is resistant to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This resistance makes it very difficult to treat. However, researches have shown that nanoparticles especially C60 hydrofullerene have antioxidant and anticancer activity. The effect of C60 hydrofullerene in cancer has been extensively studied; however, the potential regulation of autophagy and modulation of the Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP) gene has not been addressed in glioblastomas. Glioblastoma U-373 cell was treated with 0.5 µM of C60 hydrofullerene and/or 1 mM of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for 24 hours. This study demonstrated that C60 hydrofullerene and H2O2 significantly …
