Identifying Basic Aircraft Structures Using Project-Based Learning In Esp Context: Is It Effective?, Dewanti Ratna Pertiwi, Ndaru Atmi Purnami
Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan
English for specific purposes (ESP) is a branch of English instruction prepared to facilitate the students master English used in a particular field. In aerospace field, one of the objectives of ESP is mastering basic aircraft structures as the fundamental knowledge for further development such as aircraft maintenance and management. Mastering a number of technical terms in aerospace is challenging since they are not commonly used in daily life. Thus, a strategy is needed. Project-based learning (PBL) is proposed as an appropriate technique for engineering students due to its advantages; facilitating communication, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Nevertheless, identifying whether …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Text Pre-Processing In Sentiment Analysis, Ma Palomino, F Aider
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Text Pre-Processing In Sentiment Analysis, Ma Palomino, F Aider
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Practical demands and academic challenges have both contributed to making sentiment analysis a thriving area of research. Given that a great deal of sentiment analysis work is performed on social media communications, where text frequently ignores the rules of grammar and spelling, pre-processing techniques are required to clean the data. Pre-processing is also required to normalise the text before undertaking the analysis, as social media is inundated with abbreviations, emoticons, emojis, truncated sentences, and slang. While pre-processing has been widely discussed in the literature, and it is considered indispensable, recommendations for best practice have not been conclusive. Thus, we have …

The ICT advancement provokes the possibility of developing speaking skill through portfolio assessment which was commonly attributable mostly to writing skill. Hence, an exploratory study adopting ADDIE model was conducted to develop an electronic portfolio assessment integrated into teaching materials. A triangulated technique of data collection: questionnaire respondents, interviews and data from evaluation sheets was gathered. Statistical descriptive analysis, discourse and content analysis were conducted and positive possibilities were found to ffacilitate the development of speaking skills through electronic portfolio assessment.

Dress And Identity: Using Sartorial Artifacts To Explore Identity At Fort Vancouver, Dana Marie Sukau
Dissertations and Theses
How an individual dresses is an outward expression of their identity, which impacts how they are perceived by others and their daily interactions. By modifying their dress an individual can better adapt to changing social situations. The Pacific Northwest fur trade brought people of varied backgrounds together at frontier forts like the Hudson's Bay Company owned Fort Vancouver, located in modern day Vancouver, Washington. In these areas of culture contact social relations were frequently changing, and by adapting their dress an individual could put on various "social skins" differentially influencing their daily interactions (Loren 2001). Through the perspective of practice …

Believing that the film industry is getting worse by utilizing simple plots and only emphasizing on the editing and the cosmetics, European filmmakers and theorists make their own style of realistic film movements as a reaction to Hollywood’s mainstream filmmaking style. One of which is the famed Dogme 95 Manifesto film movement in Denmark propagated by Lars von Trier. Dogme 95 Manifesto is a set of rules that needs to be followed by filmmakers in order to make a Dogme film. It is believed that by following this rule will restrain the filmmakers’ creativity, focusing more on the realism inside …

Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Can religion help societies achieve peace and stability? What actions can religious leaders take to facilitate conflict resolution? This book addresses these critical questions in terms of numerous contemporary conflicts within and between countries.
In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, public attention to religion shifted away from its relationship to politics and toward its connection to violence in civil conflicts, wars, and terrorism. Religion’s role in sowing discord became more prominent than its ability to unify. Only recently have discussions turned toward the positive impact of religion and spirituality in the public sphere and to the role of faith …

This study investigates the speaking anxiety levels of EFL students enrolled in English medium classes (EMI) in a private university. Factors causing students’ speaking anxiety and potential strategies to reduce the speaking anxiety were also examined. Eighty-nine EMI students from ten undergraduate study programs were the respondents of this study. Data were collected by using Horwitz et al.’s (1986) anxiety survey. Findings showed that EMI students exhibited low-level English-speaking anxiety. The cross-tabulation data demonstrated that students perceived comprehension apprehension as the paramount anxiety factor. To reduce their comprehension apprehension, students prefer their lecturers not to over-react their speaking mistakes and …

Misunderstanding Misunderstanding: Exploring The Depth Of Hindrance To Cross-Cultural Communications, Geoff Beech
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Those who have endeavored to engage cross-culturally understand that the process is neither simple nor straightforward. Apart from the obvious problems associated with understanding and misunderstanding a different language, at times we fall into the trap of not comprehending the real depth of our cultural misunderstanding, which in turn inhibits our engagement with those in the other culture and the effectiveness of our ministries. This article examines some of the deeper aspects of engagement relating to alterity, relational directionality, occupied “spaces,” pretheoretical assumptions, and the fusion of horizons of understanding.

International students have different academic and learning cultures, as well as social environments, affecting the development of certain anxiety in dealing with pressures to adapt to new environments. Therefore, it positions the investigation of CBT’s ability to reduce public speaking anxiety for …
Aphorism And Anti-Aphorism: Language And Aesthetics, Nicholas Romanos
Aphorism And Anti-Aphorism: Language And Aesthetics, Nicholas Romanos
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Karl Kraus, the great Viennese satirist, poet, and aphorist, is still little read in the Anglophone world. This article argues that Kraus’ innovative ideas about aesthetics and language, generated in response to the problems of modernity, are of great interest to the contemporary philosopher of aesthetics. Kraus’ writing is discussed here as a basis for a theory of the aphorism, which is shown to be a literary form uniquely concerned with its own form (and thus with literary and linguistic aesthetics). Kraus uses the aphorism to ‘serve language’ and, along with quotation, it constitutes the foundation of his style. This …

Textbooks are heavily used in the United States and throughout the world as a medium between students and fields of knowledge. In the field of education, textbooks are a primary source through which pre-service teachers gain expert knowledge and develop their professional stature. Inclusive education textbooks used in introductory courses have a particular significance in that they help to shape the pre-service teacher’s understanding of the field by providing access to information and ideas at a time when prospective teachers are beginning to formulate their pedagogical and philosophical beliefs. The purpose of this study was to analyze engagement with race …
