Pausing While Programming: Insights From Keystroke Analysis, Raj Shrestha, Juho Leinonen, Albina Zavgorodniaia, Arto Hellas, John M. Edwards Oct 2022

Pausing While Programming: Insights From Keystroke Analysis, Raj Shrestha, Juho Leinonen, Albina Zavgorodniaia, Arto Hellas, John M. Edwards

Computer Science Student Research

Pauses in typing are generally considered to indicate cognitive processing and so are of interest in educational contexts. While much prior work has looked at typing behavior of Computer Science students, this paper presents results of a study specifically on the pausing behavior of students in Introductory Computer Programming. We investigate the frequency of pauses of different lengths, what last actions students take before pausing, and whether there is a correlation between pause length and performance in the course. We find evidence that frequency of pauses of all lengths is negatively correlated with performance, and that, while some keystrokes initiate …

Of Language And Thought: American Political Discourse, Normative Reason, And Essentially Contested Concepts, Riley Clare Valentine Oct 2022

Of Language And Thought: American Political Discourse, Normative Reason, And Essentially Contested Concepts, Riley Clare Valentine

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes progressive liberalism and neoliberalism as forms of normative reason that redefine specific political concepts, which are central to American liberalism – equality, liberty, the role of the State, and the pursuit of happiness. I contend that language is an important expression of normative reason. Language is how political reason and the norms accompanying it are expressed. I move through Presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt to Barack Obama, exploring shifts in language and interpretations of political concepts through progressive liberal and neoliberal forms of normative reason. I argue that a tension emerges between progressive liberalism and neoliberalism, and a …

The Institutional Nature Of Texts: On The Reform Of Yuan Zhen’S Imperial Proclamation Writing, Zhihui Zhong Oct 2022

The Institutional Nature Of Texts: On The Reform Of Yuan Zhen’S Imperial Proclamation Writing, Zhihui Zhong

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

In Yuan Zhen’s reform of imperial proclamation writing, content is given priority over form. The content covered two parts of the instructions to officials on the responsibilities and obligations and the descriptions of merits and demerits of officials, both belonging to the institutional attributes of imperial proclamation. When Yuan Zhen sought the support of imperial power for his reform, his reform was then subjected to the operation of the institutional power. As a result, his reform of linguistic style in the proclamation drafting was doomed to be incomplete. However, his efforts to introduce a less archaic style into the imperial …

The Communication Discipline And Peace Education: A Valuable Intersection For Disrupting Violence In Communication Centers, Victoria Mcdermott, Cortney Smith, Amy R. May

Journal of Communication Pedagogy

Violence is a significant issue impacting the physical, mental, social, and economic health of our learning communities. For decades the discipline of peace education has explored the effects of nonphysical violence on students and educators, as well as ways to create more peaceful, less violent, and equitable educational practices. While communication frameworks have been used in peace education research, no research found has theorized the potential value of peace education for the communication discipline. Using the contextual background of communication centers, this piece seeks to disrupt steadfast norms and practices within communication centers from the perspective of peace education. We …

Sounds About White: Critiquing The Nca Standards For Public Speaking Competency, Adam Key Oct 2022

Sounds About White: Critiquing The Nca Standards For Public Speaking Competency, Adam Key

Journal of Communication Pedagogy

Using critical discourse analysis, I critically examined the National Communication Association’s (NCA) standards for public speaking competency to determine what type of ideal speaker the standards would produce. Highlighting NCA’s emphasis on “suitable” and “appropriate” forms of communication and the use of Standard American English, I argue that the ideal competent speaker in our classrooms sounds White. I complete the essay by reimagining the basic course using methods of Africana Study to explore ways that the standards for public speaking might be decolonized and made more inclusive to students of all backgrounds.

Poetic Stylistic Features And Contiguity Disorder In The Stories Of Zakaria Tamer: A Study Of Models From Thunder, Hyewon Baek

Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات

This study seeks to uncover the special stylistic features that dominate the story of Zakaria Tamer, especially those that intersect with the features of poetic discourse, including: language density, vagueness, symbolism, repetition, musical rhythm, imaginative imagery, and others. All these features give the story a poetic tendency, and give it a unique literary identity that distinguishes it from other stories.

The study attempts to clarify the mechanisms of the emergence of these stylistic manifestations based on the theory of a contiguity disorder in the aphasia of Roman Jakobson. Jakobson discovered that aphasia is not limited to the scope of linguistic …

No Dejes Nada En La Puerta: Achieving Equity Through Asset-Based Peer Support, Brooklyn Herrera

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

Higher education institutions are becoming increasingly diverse, and Latinx students are a major contributor to this diversity, as they are the largest and fastest growing minoritized population in the United States. Nevertheless, retention and completion gaps for Latinx students persist (Kolluri, 2021). Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) play a pivotal role in promoting educational equity for Latinx students, but they have traditionally been concentrated in urban areas and a small number of states. In future years, new HSIs will emerge largely in rural environments and states with rapidly growing Latinx populations, such as Georgia.

Informed by community cultural wealth (Yosso, 2005), this …

Racecraft And Identity In The Emergence Of Islam As A Race, Cyra Akila Choudhury Oct 2022

Racecraft And Identity In The Emergence Of Islam As A Race, Cyra Akila Choudhury

University of Cincinnati Law Review

Can a religion, over time and through its social and legal resignification, come to be a race? Drawing on Critical Race Theory (“CRT”), Critical Discourse Theory, the work of Karen E. and Barbara J. Fields and Cedric Robinson, this article argues that Islam has emerged as a race and Muslims as a racial group. To support the claim, Part I examines the theoretical basis for the argument. Applying the concept of “racecraft,” the article theorizes that racism produces both the racial group and race. As many have already argued, race is not based in biology; it is not a fact …

Health Literacy And Occupational Therapy: A Discussion On Assessing And Addressing Limited Health Literacy, April M. Bryant, Bryan M. Gee, Lynn Gitlow

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Health literacy is multidimensional and goes beyond simply education level. In addition, age, gender, race and ethnicity, social network, and income level, among other things, can contribute to the level of health literacy and affect health outcomes. Many Americans cannot make sound decisions regarding their health care because of limited health literacy, yet health literacy is rarely considered during an occupational therapy evaluation and subsequent plan of care. This manuscript informs occupational therapists on strategies to address limited health literacy by using literature and evidence.

Professional Misfits: “You’Re Having To Perform . . . All Week Long”, Brenda L. Beagan, Kaitlin R. Sibbald, Tara M. Pride, Stephanie R. Bizzeth

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Background: Occupational therapy professes commitment to equity and justice, and research is growing concerning the experiences of clients from marginalized groups. To date, almost no research explores the professional experiences of therapists from marginalized groups. This qualitative study explores how exclusion operates in the profession among colleagues.

Method: Grounded in critical phenomenology, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 occupational therapists who self-identified as racialized, disabled, ethnic minority, minority sexual/gender identity (LGBTQ+), and/or from working-class backgrounds. Iterative analysis was conducted using constant comparison and employing ATLAS.ti for team coding.

Results: Across identity groups, four processes of exclusion …

Applying Positive Psychology’S Subjective Well-Being To Online Interactions, Nicole Delellis, Dominique Kelly, Liu Yifan, Alex Mayhew, Yimin Chen, Victoria Rubin, Sarah Cornwell

Data and Test Instruments

This paper outlines the complexity of the psychological construct of individuals' subjective well-being (SWB) and argues for the importance of examining behaviours and linguistic expression of individuals online social interactions in relation to self-reported SWB. This paper calls for a systematic review of the psychology research which examines SWB and its association with various character strengths, personality traits, and behaviours. While the Big Five personality traits (OCEAN) have an underlying neuropsychological basis and are considered as universal dimensions of personality along which humans differ one from another, minimal research has attempted to evaluate the relationship between personality traits, SWB, and …

Strategic Planning For Exchanging Treated Urban Wastewater For Agricultural Water With The Approach Of Supplying Sustainable Urban Water: A Case Study Of Mashhad, Iran, Sasan Esfandiari, Arash Dourandish, Ali Firoozzare, Saleh Taghvaeian

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Considering the increasing demand for urban water and the low water-use efficiency in the agricultural sector, an exchange of treated urban wastewater for agricultural water could be a fundamental solution for administering sustainable management of water resources. However, implementing the intersectoral water exchange project is influenced by the economic, social, and environmental conditions of each region, especially in developing countries. Therefore, this study sought to identify the best possible strategies for exchanging treated urban wastewater for agricultural water in Mashhad city, located in Iran, a country that suffers from decreased urban water resources. Based on the interviews conducted with the …

The Wisdom Of Practice Meets The Pursuit Of Scientific Inquiry. A Response To "Scientifically Based Research And Teacher Agency: Combating 'Conspiracies Of Certainty'", Michael A. Neel, Barbara S. Stengel

Democracy & Education

Stemhagen and Nomi argued that the influence of many contemporary forms of education research, especially scientifically based research, inevitably position teachers as problems rather than as active agents whose judgement is indivisible from the activity of teaching and learning. We share the authors’ intuitions and concerns about the divide between research and teaching but also wonder if there remains another way into some of the concerns they raise. We start with a different question but one we think is fundamental to Stemhagen and Nomi’s critique: How do the findings of empirical research make their way into the work of teaching? …

Expanding The Landscape Of Wholeness: The Spirituality Of Teacher Preparation. A Response To "Reconstituting Teacher Education: Toward Wholeness In An Era Of Monumental Challenges", Paul A. Michalec

Democracy & Education

This article is a response to a paper arguing for a shift from “oneness” to “wholeness” as a democratic principle when reconceptualizing teacher education in a time of large-scale social change. While the paper provides compelling arguments for wholeness as a tool to address social injustice, the discussion is framed primarily through a humanist lens. This response is an invitation to expand the definition of wholeness to include spirituality as core to what it means to be human and whole. It addresses the importance of spirituality in teacher education when considering culturally responsive pedagogy, the religion-spirit distinction, the source of …

Framing Citizenship And Citizenship Formation For Preservice Teachers: A Critical Review Of Prominent Trends In The Research Literature, David Scott, Jennifer Tupper, Jessica Gobran

Democracy & Education

Funded by Thinking Historically for Canada's Future, a research partnership supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, this article considers how, and the extent to which, contemporary research within the area of citizenship education for preservice teachers advances the creation of more genuinely democratic and socially just societies. Drawing on critical and anti-oppressive insights in education, we specifically examine themes, trends, and developments within research related to: (a) preservice teachers’ beliefs about citizenship, democracy, and related themes, and (b) the influence of pedagogical practices and program models on their citizenship dispositions and teaching practices. We conclude …

Reconstituting Teacher Education: Toward Wholeness In An Era Of Monumental Challenges, Jessica E. Masterson, Lauren Gatti Oct 2022

Reconstituting Teacher Education: Toward Wholeness In An Era Of Monumental Challenges, Jessica E. Masterson, Lauren Gatti

Democracy & Education

Speaking to the political and social upheaval of our present moment, and drawing on discourses of democratic education, we argue that the U.S.’s racial reckoning propelled by recent events constitutes a sort of “founding” for our democracy and that this founding has important implications for reconfiguring citizenship within institutions and practices of teacher education. In building this argument, the authors articulate the aims of teacher education in a democracy and expand upon political scientist Danielle Allen’s theoretical concepts of "sacrifice," "reconstitution," and "wholeness," demonstrating their urgent utility within our “thinning” democracy (Hess & McAvoy, 2015). We then draw on relevant …

Breaking The Silence: Convolutional Neural Networks For Sign Language Recognition In The Deaf Community, Myvizhi Muthuswamy, Ahmed M. Ali, Ahmed Abdelhafeez

Sustainable Machine Intelligence Journal

The deaf community faces communication barriers that hinder their interaction with the hearing world. This work aims to bridge the gap by enabling accurate recognition of Arabic sign language gestures. The proposed Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) architecture is designed to effectively capture the spatial features inherent in sign language gestures, thereby enhancing recognition accuracy. A distinctive aspect of our work involves the integration of a CNN architecture with a residual design, which effectively captures intricate spatial features inherent in sign language gestures, thereby enhancing recognition precision. The study leverages the ArSL2018 dataset, a comprehensive collection of grayscale sign language images …
