Adhd And The Neural Correlates Of Emotion Perception: An Fnirs Embodiment Study, Sara Damasco Jan 2023

Adhd And The Neural Correlates Of Emotion Perception: An Fnirs Embodiment Study, Sara Damasco

Theses & ETDs

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition of executive dysfunction. Research has increasingly identified social impairment in some ADHD people, although the underlying cause is not clear. Socioemotional processing is mediated most directly by the perception of emotional cues from others, most notably recognizing and processing facial cues. Several studies suggest that patients with ADHD show deficits in interoceptive awareness or are less aware of their internal bodily states in addition to deficits in emotional self-awareness. Emotion perception and emotional self-awareness are empirically linked by empathy and social mirroring; these phenomena rely on embodied cognition, the use of one’s body states …

“Poetry As Exorcism, As Purifier, / It Felt Possible”: An Examination Of Ritual Poetics Through Robert Duncan And Caconrad, Sophia Brown Jan 2023

“Poetry As Exorcism, As Purifier, / It Felt Possible”: An Examination Of Ritual Poetics Through Robert Duncan And Caconrad, Sophia Brown

Theses & ETDs

This thesis will be exploring the definition, potential forms and outcomes of ritual poetics, as observed in three poets during the 1950s modernist poetic movement, also known as the San Francisco Renaissance, into the present day. By examining the poetry of Robert Duncan and CAConrad primarily, as well as some of the work of Jack Spicer as a transitional poet between the two, elements of Gnostic poetics and non-traditional community formation can be observed as key components of ritual poetics. This thesis considers how various American social and political factors throughout these poets’ careers—including their queer identities—further influences the kind …

Deep Learning Methods To Automate Students’ Writing Evaluation For Improved Writing Outcomes, Temesgen Mikael

Theses

Writing is an essential skill for students to master. Nevertheless, it remains the most challenging of the four language skills for many due to various factors, including infrequent writing assignments and inadequate feedback tools. Consequently, there is a pressing need to develop more effective methods for supporting students' writing skill development. In this thesis, the aim is to apply deep learning techniques to automated essay scoring and improve the feedback provided by existing tools. To achieve this aim, this study’s main objective is to compare the predictions made by different deep learning models to identify the most effective approach for …

This book is an artistic creation with multiple influences. Many different people throughout the Ixil area tell the story of the king’s daughter and her beloved who turns into a hummingbird, and this story appears in many books and essays about the region. Each version is a bit different from the next. The tasks that the king asks the boyfriend to perform, the level of detail, and where the story begins or ends are different in different versions. Medical Imaging Senior Posters

Abstract

This research project explains the fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI) and the ways that AI can be useful in computed tomography (CT). The current state of AI application in CT is still new yet has been advancing with its significant impact on diagnosis, image analyses and patient care. These impacts deal with the challenges that have traditionally been associated with CT scans through a series of techniques and algorithms. In CT, computed tomography angiography (CTA) is a common procedure which is used to diagnose cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death worldwide. AI can assist with such a …

Private Enforcement In The States, Austin Peters, Diego Zambrano, Neel Guha, Jeffrey Xia Jan 2023

Private Enforcement In The States, Austin Peters, Diego Zambrano, Neel Guha, Jeffrey Xia

Articles

Scholarship on U.S. litigation and civil procedure has scarcely studied the role of private enforcement in the states. Over the past two decades, scholars have established that, almost uniquely in the world, the U.S. often relies on private parties rather than administrative agencies to enforce important statutory provisions. Take your pick of any area in American governance, and you will find private rights of action: environmental law, civil rights, employment discrimination, antitrust, consumer protection, business competition, securities fraud, and so on. In each of these areas, Congress has deliberately empowered private plaintiffs instead of, or in addition to, government agencies. …

More Than The Renaissance: The Reclassification Of The Disney Animated Films Of The Classics Period, Alia R. Tyner Jan 2023

More Than The Renaissance: The Reclassification Of The Disney Animated Films Of The Classics Period, Alia R. Tyner

Publications and Research

Over the past ten years, more than 200 peer-reviewed articles with Disney in their titles have been published across disciplines, especially in the humanities and social sciences. Beginning in the 1930s with Disney’s first motion picture, the company, its venues, acquisitions, movies, and other products have become a robust research topic for academics, constantly refreshed with new ideas and perspectives. As Disney celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2023, researchers and readers examining the movies could benefit from some consistency in how the passage of time is described, and yet the methods of classification of these movies are not robust or …

This engagement was foundational for expanding parental participation opportunities and further developing the community school. The study explored ways to balance power relationships between the home and school to develop an implementation plan that better reflects the community being served. Theoretical lenses such as CRT and LatCrit were the basis for centering the voices of Latinx families and valuing their various forms of capital consistent with the Community Cultural Model. Participants influenced the design of the garden …

Is It Science Or Storytime? Expert Testimony Evaluating Child Witness Credibility In Sexual Assault Cases, Elizabeth I. Boals Jan 2023

Is It Science Or Storytime? Expert Testimony Evaluating Child Witness Credibility In Sexual Assault Cases, Elizabeth I. Boals

American University Law Review

While jurors struggle with determining any witnesses’ credibility, an even more arduous task is determining the credibility of a child victim in a sexual assault case. Due to developmental immaturity, children lack important recall and communication skills, and the well-established procedures of direct and cross examination are ineffective at producing accurate and complete trial testimony. Despite the adversarial system being proven ineffective in these contexts, American courts remain hesitant to admit expert testimony based on established psychology tools. Specifically, courts have questioned the application of Statement Validity Assessments (“SVAs”), to assist jurors in evaluating witness credibility, as they believe such …

The Dialogic Function Of I.C.J. Provisional Measures Decisions In The U.N. Political Organs: Assessing The Evidence, Michael Ramsden, Jiang Zixin Jan 2023

The Dialogic Function Of I.C.J. Provisional Measures Decisions In The U.N. Political Organs: Assessing The Evidence, Michael Ramsden, Jiang Zixin

American University International Law Review

The aim of this article is to consider the degree to which provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice (I.C.J.) have influenced United Nations (U.N.) diplomacy and the exercise of functions by its political organs in the areas of international peace, security, and human rights. This article evaluates this influence by examining decisions in which the I.C.J. indicated provisional measures, denoting the remedy available to the Court, on an interim basis, to restrain or instruct the parties to take certain measures to preserve either or both parties’ rights pending the outcome of the case. In doing so, this …

Criminalizing Environmental Degradation And Devastation: New Prospects For The Icc Rome Statute, Kelly Pisimisi Jan 2023

Criminalizing Environmental Degradation And Devastation: New Prospects For The Icc Rome Statute, Kelly Pisimisi

American University International Law Review

Over the last decade, steadily increasing voices are ringing the tocsin to the international community for the impact of human activities on climate and their potential consequences on human life and dignity. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), in its recent (6th) Assessment Report, confirmed this assertion. Greenhouse gas concentrations and emissions (particularly CO2), as well as the retreat of arctic glaciers and the subsequent sea level rise causing—among other issues—the acidification of the oceanic waters, are some of the most evident human-induced implications on climate and the environment.

Understanding School Shootings Using Qualitatively-Informed Natural Language Processing, Quan K. Do Jan 2023

Understanding School Shootings Using Qualitatively-Informed Natural Language Processing, Quan K. Do

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Prior literature has investigated the connection between school shootings and factors of familial trauma and mental health. Specifically, experiences related to parental suicide, physical or sexual abuse, neglect, marital violence, or severe bullying have been associated with a propensity for carrying out a mass shooting. Given prior research has shown common histories among school shooters, it follows that a person's violent tendencies can be revealed by their previous communications with others, thus aiding in predicting an individual's proclivity for school shootings. However, previous literature found no conclusions were drawn from online posts made by the shooters prior to the mass …

Through A Cultural Lens: The Association Between Parentification And Identity Development In Relation To Ethnicity, Jasmine A. Garcia Jan 2023

Through A Cultural Lens: The Association Between Parentification And Identity Development In Relation To Ethnicity, Jasmine A. Garcia

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Expectations of children to perform parenting tasks above their development level, a phenomenon known as parentification, is said to be destructive in western literature. However, in other cultures, children taking on some parenting duties may not be considered a detriment but rather an attribute of filial responsibility. The current study examined the relationships between identity distress and parentification as it differs by culture. A comparison of parentification by ethnicity revealed that individuals who did not classify as an ethnic minority experienced significant levels of identity distress compared to ethnic minority individuals regarding parentification. This variation may be attributed to elements …

Antiziganism And The Rise In Electoral Success Of Extreme Right-Wing Parties In Central And Eastern Europe, Mohamedameen I. Osman Jan 2023

Antiziganism And The Rise In Electoral Success Of Extreme Right-Wing Parties In Central And Eastern Europe, Mohamedameen I. Osman

Honors Undergraduate Theses

My thesis explores the association between Roma's perceptions of discrimination against them by native populations and electoral support of populist or extreme right-wing parties in Central and Eastern Europe. Roma communities have historically been discriminated and persecuted; however according to findings in the literature, during the Cold War there had been improvements in terms of protection of their rights and their economic advancement. Following the end of the Cold War, however, Roma lost these protections and their status worsened. This deterioration is partly attributed to the rise of far-right parties in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe; this connection, …

Those working in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields are delivering world-changing solutions to the problems we face and are saving lives every day. Some of them do surgeries, some design airplanes and cars, others study the wildlife around us, and others create processes to facilitate the manufacturing of devices we use often. In order to do this, the engineers, scientists, doctors, and other professionals in STEM disciplines need to possess hard skills. Hard skills are often called technical skills and are measurable abilities and skills that are needed to perform tasks effectively. The tasks done share something in …

Masculinity, Pornography, And Inceldom: The Use Of American Ideals Of Masculinity And The Consumption Of Heterosexual Pornography To Radicalize Young Men Into Inceldom, Adelaide Verdugo-Thomson Jan 2023

Masculinity, Pornography, And Inceldom: The Use Of American Ideals Of Masculinity And The Consumption Of Heterosexual Pornography To Radicalize Young Men Into Inceldom, Adelaide Verdugo-Thomson

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

The increased presence of the internet has granted many young American men a safe space to share beliefs and experiences, access new materials, and reach wider audiences. At the same time, heterosexual pornographic content has become increasingly accessible, and misogynistic beliefs are protected on various user-run forums. Male dominance in heterosexual pornography, the prevalence of rape myth acceptance, Incel slang, and the strong brotherhood bonds present in Incel communities may be radicalizing factors to encourage young American men to adopt Incel ideology. This literature review seeks to highlight the relationship between American masculinity, consumption of heterosexual pornography, and Inceldom in …

A Culturally Responsive Evaluation Lens To Logic Model Design, Ciara Cascharelle Knight Jan 2023

A Culturally Responsive Evaluation Lens To Logic Model Design, Ciara Cascharelle Knight

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Culturally responsive evaluation (CRE) is an approach that centers all evaluation processes around the culture of a program’s secondary stakeholders. Specifically, this entails ensuring shared meanings in a group through communication. However, minimal connections have been made between CRE and logic model designs. Logic models commonly used by evaluators are data visualization and communication tools designed to aid in effectively communicating a program’s theory. Nevertheless, little is understood about the role culture plays in this process. This multiphase mixed methods study explored the integration of CRE to logic model designs using individualism and collectivism (IC) as a construct for culture …

This study is grounded in Critical Race Theory, Critical Whiteness Studies with a Critical Discourse Analysis of recruitment and admissions policies on TEP websites and documents, four observations of TEP virtual information …

Social Emotional Learning For Latinx High School Students With Specific Learning Disabilities, Jennifer Lynn Tucker Mottes Jan 2023

Social Emotional Learning For Latinx High School Students With Specific Learning Disabilities, Jennifer Lynn Tucker Mottes

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Social, emotional, and academic skills are essential to success in school, the workplace, our homes, and our communities, allowing individuals to contribute successfully and meaningfully to our society (Durlak, Weissberg, Dymnicki, Taylor, & Schellinger, 2011; Jones & Kahn, 2017). The labor market acknowledges the importance of these skills as well, actively seeking employees who have the necessary skills to manage their emotions, collaborate with peers, and persist through challenges (Jones & Kahn, 2017). Researchers have established a link between the implementation of social emotional learning programs in schools and positive social, emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes for those students as …

What Is A “Helpmate”? Using Comparative Semitic Linguistics To Propose New Translations For Ezer Kenegdo, Rebekah Call Jan 2023

What Is A “Helpmate”? Using Comparative Semitic Linguistics To Propose New Translations For Ezer Kenegdo, Rebekah Call

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation argues that a comparative Semitic analysis of ezer kenegdo (KJV: “help meet”) in Genesis 2:18, 20 can provide new semantic ranges that enrich the reading of gender roles in Genesis 1-3. The usage of ezer kenegdo in Genesis 2:18, 20 has defied satisfactory interpretation, even though this passage has played an important role in the conversation surrounding gender roles in the Bible, in other religious discourse, and even aspects of culture influenced by elements of Jewish and Christian worldviews. The struggle with this phrase is twofold: the first difficulty lies in the association of ezer “help” with subordinate …

Overdue Credit: Credit Management, Crime, And Immigrants In Early Twentieth Century United States, Enrique Salas-Limon Jan 2023

Overdue Credit: Credit Management, Crime, And Immigrants In Early Twentieth Century United States, Enrique Salas-Limon

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This thesis uses the theory of racial capitalism to examine the joined histories of Arab American immigrants and the professionalization of credit management in the early twentieth century. The history of early Arab Americans has previously been told as a clichéd story of upward mobility and financial success without much documented interaction between the Arab immigrant and real economic institutions, such as banks and credit bureaus. This thesis brings to light previously unknown documentations of Arab American and Arab immigrant alleged criminals in the publications of the National Association of Credit Men, or NACM. As the largest credit management and …
