The Politics Of Open Access And The Decolonization Of Knowledge, Monica Berger Jan 2023

The Politics Of Open Access And The Decolonization Of Knowledge, Monica Berger

Publications and Research

Bibliodiversity is a critical concept in mitigating epistemic injustice and coloniality. Scholarly communities must determine their own agendas in order to create diverse pathways for varied knowledge circuits across local, regional, and international boundaries. Virtue epistemology, epistemic injustice, epistemic coloniality, and scholarly communications share some common ground, albeit utilizing very different rhetoric and discourse. Epistemic injustice and coloniality, in particular, align with concerns related to scholarly communications. Subsequently, I will provide an overview of open access, addressing its history and how current conditions that have resulted in the domination of the author pays model and marginalization of Southern authors. The …

The Theorizing Of Terrorism Within Criminology, Daren Fisher, Erin M. Kearns Jan 2023

The Theorizing Of Terrorism Within Criminology, Daren Fisher, Erin M. Kearns

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Objectives. While terrorism studies were once castigated as atheoretical and unempirical, criminology has been well suited to apply theories of crime to terrorism and to then test those theories with rigorous methods and robust data. The present study takes stock of how criminologists have theorized about terrorism and tested those theories over time in 13 of the discipline’s leading journals. Methods. The study systematically examines theoretical framing, hypotheses, methodological approach, focus within criminology and criminal justice, and policy recommendations in terrorism-focused articles. Results. While terrorism has become more central within top journals, sparse attention has been paid to many criminological …

Paternalism In International Human Rights Law, Lucas Lixinski, Noam Peleg Jan 2023

Paternalism In International Human Rights Law, Lucas Lixinski, Noam Peleg

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

This article argues that international human rights law (IHRL) at a system-wide level produces paternalistic effects that undermine the work it is meant to do for rightsholders. Analyzing the work of four key United Nations human rights treaty bodies, we show how institutional arrangements exclude rightsholders from having a say on their own interests in what IHRL should mean for them, and we are instead left with a body of norms, guidelines, and institutions with self-serving dynamics that reinforce the position of IHRL institutions and only secondarily benefit rightsholders.

Spoken Word Recognition Across Language Boundary: Erp Evidence Of Prosodic Transfer Driven By Pitch, Juan Zhang, Yaxuan Meng, Chenggang Wu, Zhen Yuan Jan 2023

Spoken Word Recognition Across Language Boundary: Erp Evidence Of Prosodic Transfer Driven By Pitch, Juan Zhang, Yaxuan Meng, Chenggang Wu, Zhen Yuan

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Extensive research has explored the perception of English lexical stress by Chinese EFL learners and tried to unveil the underlying mechanism of the prosodic transfer from a native tonal language to a non-native stress language. However, the role of the pitch as the shared cue by lexical stress and lexical tone during the transfer remains controversial when the segmental cue (i.e., reduced vowel) is absent. By employing event-related potential (ERP) measurements, the current study aimed to further investigate the role of the pitch during the prosodic transfer from L1 lexical tone to L2 lexical stress and the underlying neural responses. …

Black, Gareth Mccray, Ambreen Nizar, Salahuddin Ahmed, Muhammad Imran Nisar, Farzana Begum, Fyezah Jehan

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Introduction: Children's early development is affected by caregiving experiences, with lifelong health and well-being implications. Governments and civil societies need population-based measures to monitor children's early development and ensure that children receive the care needed to thrive. To this end, the WHO developed the Global Scales for Early Development (GSED) to measure children's early development up to 3 years of age. The GSED includes three measures for population and programmatic level measurement: (1) short form (SF) (caregiver report), (2) long form (LF) (direct administration) and (3) psychosocial form (PF) (caregiver report). The primary aim of this protocol is to validate …

Effects Of Affix Type And Base Word Transparency On Students' Performance On Different Morphological Awareness Measures, Victoria Henbest

Victoria S. Henbest Publications

We examined whether affix type and base word transparency explained variation in third- through sixth-grade students' performance on a number of morphological awareness tasks. Third- through sixth-grade students (n > 500 at each grade) completed morphological awareness tasks from the Morphological Awareness Test for Reading and Spelling, which represent the ways individuals may use their morphological awareness to support reading and spelling. Explanatory item response models were used to understand the role of affix type and base word transparency on students' performance on six morphological awareness tasks. For all grades, 73%-83% of variance in students' performance was due to differences across …

Meyer, Marcelle M. Dougan, Bethany Golden, Kevin Ta, Bora Nam, Janice Y. Tsoh, Marian Tzuang, Van M.Ta Park

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

BACKGROUND: The global COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affected Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) and revealed significant health disparities with reports of increased discrimination and xenophobia. Among AAPIs, the pandemic exacerbated their social, linguistic, and geographic isolation. Social support may be especially important for AAPIs given the salience of collectivism as a cultural value. Another mechanism for support among AAPIs was technology use, as it is generally widespread among this population. However, older adults may not perceive the same benefits. OBJECTIVE: We examined social support and technology use and their relationships with mental and physical health outcomes through the COVID-19 pandemic …

The Misunderstood History Of Textualism, Tara Leigh Grove Jan 2023

The Misunderstood History Of Textualism, Tara Leigh Grove

Northwestern University Law Review

This Article challenges widespread assumptions about the history of textualism. Jurists and scholars have sought for decades to distinguish “modern textualism” from the so-called “plain meaning school” of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—an approach that both textualists and non-textualists alike have long viewed as improperly “literal” and “wooden.” This Article shows that this conventional historical account is incorrect. Based on a study of statutory cases from 1789 to 1945 that use the term “plain meaning” or similar terms, this Article reveals that, under the actual plain meaning approach, the Supreme Court did not ignore context but looked to …

Artificial Intelligence, Basic Skills, And Quantitative Literacy, Gizem Karaali Jan 2023

Artificial Intelligence, Basic Skills, And Quantitative Literacy, Gizem Karaali

Numeracy

The introduction in November 2022 of ChatGPT, a freely available language-based artificial intelligence, has led to concerns among some educators about the feasibility and benefits of teaching basic writing and critical thinking skills to students in the context of easily accessed, AI-based cheating mechanisms. As of now, ChatGPT can write pretty convincing student-level prose, but it is still not very good at answering quantitatively rich questions. Therefore, for the time being, the preceding concerns may not be shared by a large portion of the numeracy education community. However, as Google and WolframAlpha are definitely capable of answering standard and some …

Exploring The Relationship Between Quantitative Reasoning Skills And News Habits, Bennett Attaway, John Voiklis, Jay Barchas-Lichtenstein, Eric Hochberg, Jim Hammerman, Uduak Grace Thomas, Nicole Lamarca, Laura Santhanam, Patti Parson

Numeracy

Because people are constantly confronted with numbers and mathematical concepts in the news, we have embarked on a project to create journalism that can support news users’ number skills. But doing so requires understanding (1) journalists’ ability to reason with numbers, (2) other adults’ ability to do so, and (3) the attributes and affordances of news. In this paper, we focus on the relationship between adults’ news habits and their quantitative reasoning skills. We collected data from a sample of 1,200 US adults, testing their ability to interpret statistical results and asking them to report their news habits. The assessment …

Forgotten "People": Reviving Textualism In The Fourth Amendment, Peter C. Douglas Jan 2023

Forgotten "People": Reviving Textualism In The Fourth Amendment, Peter C. Douglas

San Diego Law Review

For more than a century, the Supreme Court has struggled to develop a coherent and sustainable theory of the Fourth Amendment. Before the ink is dry on a new Fourth Amendment opinion, it is cabined, abrogated, or outright overruled. As one scholar has commented, the “evolution of Fourth Amendment doctrine over the past century bears a striking resemblance to Hamlet’s descent into insanity.” While the Court vacillates between “theories” of the Fourth Amendment that might bring clarity to a difficult body of constitutional law, the rights it bespeaks lie vulnerable and unprotected. This Article argues that the problem flows from …

Portals To Learning: Threshold Concepts In Art History Teaching And Learning, Rhonda L. Reymond Jan 2023

Portals To Learning: Threshold Concepts In Art History Teaching And Learning, Rhonda L. Reymond

Art History Pedagogy & Practice

Threshold concepts are conceived of as portals to learning that open previously inaccessible ways of thinking. They encompass specific ideas within a discipline that must be mastered before the learner can progress. The process of identifying threshold concepts can reveal hidden or unacknowledged fundamental disciplinary beliefs and epistemology. Integrating a threshold concepts framework into the scholarship of teaching and learning in art history (SoTL-AH) can help faculty diagnose and anticipate when students are likely to encounter troublesome knowledge within an art history course. Distinguishing these thresholds can aid instructors in designing courses that prepare for specific stages that present conceptual …

Approaching Language As A Human Factor In Aviation: The Challenges Of Pilot Language Training In The Academic Level In Brazil, Aline Pacheco, Tales Figueiredo Silva Jan 2023

Approaching Language As A Human Factor In Aviation: The Challenges Of Pilot Language Training In The Academic Level In Brazil, Aline Pacheco, Tales Figueiredo Silva

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Language training for pilots poses challenges worldwide as the use of Aviation English entails a number of features portrayed from a Human Factors perspective. Language proficiency is imperative, as required by the ICAO DOC 9835 compliance. It should be noted, however, that a thorough comprehension of effective communication in aviation as a non-technical skill surpasses the particular understanding of issues in the linguistic level, considering that most of the participants in aeronautical communications are non-native speakers of English and the cultural features underlying the linguistic behavior. This awareness must be accounted in training programs, especially in the academic level, where …

National Development And The Sustainability Of Mining In The Atacama Desert, Chile, Dakota Soleil Osgood Jan 2023

National Development And The Sustainability Of Mining In The Atacama Desert, Chile, Dakota Soleil Osgood

Capstone Collection

As climate change continues to intensify on a global scale, efforts have been made to implement renewable energies and progressive technologies. These tools are critical in the shift towards a more sustainable practice, and yet analysis of localized impacts from the development of these mechanisms is inadequate. Chile has been and continues to be a leading country in mineral extraction, with an economic history founded in the mining industry. The establishment of mining in Chile as a progressive tool has aided the social and economic development of the nation. Consequences of mining extraction, however, include intensive environmental degradation, human rights …

The Adaptive Capacity To Implement Climate Migration Policy In Response To Sea-Level Rise In The Maldives, Kelsey Garrett Jan 2023

The Adaptive Capacity To Implement Climate Migration Policy In Response To Sea-Level Rise In The Maldives, Kelsey Garrett

Capstone Collection

This exploratory study is centered on the increasing harmful impacts of climate change and its connection to human life. The effects are exacerbating the current drivers of migration like livelihoods, security, and politics. People are losing their homes and livelihoods because of drought, rising seas, or increasing natural disasters. Millions of people are. Displaced by climate events every year, the number is expected to increase. Due to this, there is value in studying climate change and migration. Amongst the most vulnerable are those living in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). This exploratory study examined the Maldives to understand their adaptive …

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The activities of Mongolic-speaking populations, a large group of people in eastern Eurasia, have important impact on the history of East Asia and other parts of Eurasia. Most previous genetic research of East Asian populations, including ancient DNA studies, have involved samples from Mongolic-speaking populations or their ancient relatives. Here, we summarized frequency data of paternal Y-chromosome haplogroups from all available literature about Mongolic-speaking populations from 1999 to 2019. Fourteen paternal components were identified and six of them were proposed as major and common components in ancestor groups of Mongolic-speaking populations. We thoroughly discussed the possible origin, migration patterns, and …

Rogue Entrepreneurship, Russ Mcbride, Mark D. Packard, Brent B. Clark Jan 2023

Rogue Entrepreneurship, Russ Mcbride, Mark D. Packard, Brent B. Clark

Marketing & Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

We suggest a new category of “rogue entrepreneurship,” that describes entrepreneurial activity where the core business idea violates established or expert consensus, to be contrasted with “conforming entrepreneurship,” where it does not. There are large entrepreneurial rents hidden behind a bulwark of expert consensus that predicts doom for a venture based upon a rogue and unlikely claim. The “rogue” cases, where the predominant assessment context is different from the entrepreneur’s, result in broad skepticism against the entrepreneurial claim. We explain what rogue entrepreneurship is and how it works.

“What important truth do very few people agree with you on? A …
