Elementary Principal Leadership And Special Education: A Case Study In The United States, Vivian M. Garrison
Dissertations and Theses
School districts have called upon principals to build capacity for inclusive learning environments and prioritize the needs of an increasingly diverse group of students. A principal's work to effectively include students so they are part of the school community and have opportunities to achieve academically has been challenging. As the instructional leader of the school, principals have played an essential role by collaborating with teachers and specialists, removing obstacles to learning, and ensuring that teachers meet the needs of all learners in their classrooms. They have also been held accountable for knowing the laws, policies, and best practices to support …

Getting Our Tutors Back On Track: An Examination Of The Perceptions Of Small Group Instruction And Engagement Strategies And The Professional Development Required, Kimberly Nicole Moore
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Research has shown that teachers and tutors are facing what they are calling the COVID-19 slide, a decline in achievement gains made during the previous school year and school closures due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. There is not only a loss of learning, but also a substantial impact on children’s development. Teachers and tutors are now facing such prolific deficits that they are trying to find solutions to provide more assistance for those struggling students. One solution is tutoring.
This literature review offers information on the increased need for tutoring programs over the past few years and discusses the need …
Decentralization And Centralization In Sociocratic Organizations—Dynamics, Combinations, And Hybrid Solutions, Ted Rau, Phd
Decentralization And Centralization In Sociocratic Organizations—Dynamics, Combinations, And Hybrid Solutions, Ted Rau, Phd
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
The article discusses the interplay between decentralized and centralized aspects of governance in the context of decentralized self-governance and shares learnings from Sociocracy For All’s (SoFA) experience, including that decentralization is an active process that requires preparation, budget, strategy, and information can act as centralizing forces, and decentralization requires different ways of thinking about responsibility and leadership. SoFA is a young membership organization founded in 2016 promoting sociocracy, a governance system with consent-based decision-making in small groups, in nonprofits and other organizations.
Phonological Awareness Intervention In Bilingual Language Development, Emma Bonham
Phonological Awareness Intervention In Bilingual Language Development, Emma Bonham
Bakerman Student Research Awards
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of phonological awareness in the spelling and reading skills in bilingual language development to improve speech and language services. This study sought out to reach the research goal of understanding whether or not phonological awareness skills improve reading and spelling abilities in bilingual children. Method: Nine universities with speech and language programs were chosen. Three of which were from the Midwest, three from the East, and the remaining three from the South. In total, eight speech language pathologists who have worked with bilingual children completed an online survey regarding …
Gamesmanship In Modern Discovery Tech, Neel Guha, Peter Henderson, Diego A. Zambrano
Gamesmanship In Modern Discovery Tech, Neel Guha, Peter Henderson, Diego A. Zambrano
Faculty Scholarship
This chapter explores the potential for gamesmanship in technology-assisted discovery. Attorneys have long embraced gamesmanship strategies in analog discovery, producing reams of irrelevant documents, delaying depositions, or interpreting requests in a hyper-technical manner. The new question, however, is whether machine learning technologies can transform gaming strategies. By now it is well known that technologies have reinvented the practice of civil litigation and, specifically, the extensive search for relevant documents in complex cases. Many sophisticated litigants use machine learning algorithms – under the umbrella of “Technology Assisted Review” (TAR) – to simplify the identification and production of relevant documents in discovery. …
Colonial Enclaves In The 21st Century: A Study Of Ethnic Russians In Estonia And Afrikaners In South Africa, Emma Jane W. Konkoly
Colonial Enclaves In The 21st Century: A Study Of Ethnic Russians In Estonia And Afrikaners In South Africa, Emma Jane W. Konkoly
Senior Theses
Despite decades of disempowerment, some ethnic enclaves of colonial powers –termed colonial enclaves– remain in the decolonized country they once controlled. In international law or United Nations resolutions, there currently are no special distinctions between colonial enclaves and other types of ethnic enclaves or non-state actors. This thesis analyzes the social dynamics of ethnic enclaves and the existing laws that govern non-state actors to then investigate two cases of colonial enclaves: ethnic Russians in Estonia and Afrikaners in South Africa. Based on this case study research, it can be concluded that colonial enclaves have unique social and political dynamics that …
Preparedness, Resilience And Unmet Needs Of Informal Caregivers Of Advanced Cancer Patients In A Regional Mission Hospital In Kenya: Qualitative Study, Too Wesley, Faith Lelei, Mary Adam, Pete Halestrap
Preparedness, Resilience And Unmet Needs Of Informal Caregivers Of Advanced Cancer Patients In A Regional Mission Hospital In Kenya: Qualitative Study, Too Wesley, Faith Lelei, Mary Adam, Pete Halestrap
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Background: Cancer is the third highest cause of death in Kenya. Eighty percent of cancer cases arrive at advanced stages, when there is nothing that can be done to cure them, and palliative care is the best alternative. Although the majority of end-of-life care in Kenya is provided at home, little is known about the caregivers’ preparedness, resilience and continued unmet needs. The goal of this qualitative study was to explore caregivers’ perceived preparedness, resilience and continued unmet needs in their caregiving role to patients with advanced stages of cancer.
Methods: A purposive sampling method was used to identify and …
Temporal Features Of Concepts Are Grounded In Time Perception Neural Networks: An Eeg Study, Karim Johari, Vicky T. Lai, Nicholas Riccardi, Rutvik H. Desai
Temporal Features Of Concepts Are Grounded In Time Perception Neural Networks: An Eeg Study, Karim Johari, Vicky T. Lai, Nicholas Riccardi, Rutvik H. Desai
Faculty Publications
Experimental evidence suggests that modality-specific concept features such as action, motion, and sound partially rely on corresponding action/perception neural networks in the human brain. Little is known, however, about time-related features of concepts. We examined whether temporal features of concepts recruit networks that subserve time perception in the brain in an EEG study using event and object nouns. Results showed significantly larger ERPs for event duration vs object size judgments over right parietal electrodes, a region associated with temporal processing. Additionally, alpha/beta (10–15 Hz) neural oscillation showed a stronger desynchronization for event duration compared to object size in the right …

The Impact Of Draconic Signs Upon The Game Design Process, Peter Carey
The Impact Of Draconic Signs Upon The Game Design Process, Peter Carey
Postgraduate
This creative practice research project explores the use of draconic signs and symbols, and their impact upon the game design process through a game developed in VR and an accompanying exegesis. The research draws on semiotic theory, exploring how meaning is created and conveyed through the use of symbols in games. It examines how the addition of draconic symbols to locomotion, character abilities and dialogue choices may facilitate player agency. Further, it examines the impact integrating these symbols into the player's avatarisation may have on the construction of player identity.
Via a creative practical component, the research demonstrates the practical …

Contrastive Learning Approach To Word-In-Context Task For Low-Resource Languages, Pei-Chi Lo, Yang-Yin Lee, Hsien-Hao Chen, Agus Trisnajaya Kwee, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Word in context (WiC) task aims to determine whether a target word’s occurrences in two sentences share the same sense. In this paper, we propose a Contrastive Learning WiC (CLWiC) framework to improve the learning of sentence/word representations and classification of target word senses in the sentence pair when performing WiC on lowresource languages. In representation learning, CLWiC trains a pre-trained language model’s ability to cope with lowresource languages using both unsupervised and supervised contrastive learning. The WiC classifier learning further finetunes the language model with WiC classification loss under two classifier architecture options, SGBERT and WiSBERT, which use single-encoder …
Jesus Tribe, Christopher Richardson
Jesus Tribe, Christopher Richardson
Doctor of Ministry
Christians and churches in the early twenty-first century seem to belong to various tribes which leads to confused, disjointed loyalties. This confusion can lead to acrimony within churches. To develop and maintain the unity spoken of by Jesus Christ, these groups would benefit by better understanding and recognizing the prevalence of tribalism. Further, this should lead to the instigation of processes by which they can effectively evaluate and re-align their tribal loyalties toward a more definitive and effective modeling of Jesus and his lordship. Church leadership will benefit from a better understanding of the forces of tribalism at work both …
Belonging: The Heart Of Our Family Calling, Janice M. Brewer-Stevens
Belonging: The Heart Of Our Family Calling, Janice M. Brewer-Stevens
Doctor of Ministry
Transracial families are part of our society whether people like it or not. There are not enough adoptive families of any kind, and children need support, love, and acceptance. Last August the Census Bureau reported that the number of non-Hispanic Americans who identify as multiracial jumped by 127 percent over the last decade, and for people who identified as Hispanic, the increase was even higher. Also, from 2017 to 2019, half of all U.S. adoptions were of non-white children, and half of these adoptions were transracial. The result? An increase in transracial adoptions in the United States and the subsequent …

Students and faculty can jointly play a role in how Open Educational Resources are created and deployed by assigning students to expand Wikipedia pages. By producing re-usable OER materials, these assignments provide students with transferable research skills and collaborative learning opportunities, face-to-face or remotely. By taking part in the production of open-access materials, students practice sharing knowledge with a larger community and receive feedback from interested readers beyond their instructor and classmates. In addition, introducing more students to Wikipedia editing tools can increase the diversity of editors and topics in gender, language, ethnicity, and region. At the same time, learning …
