Influence Of Leadership Styles On Expatriate Nurses' Professional Integration In The Uae, Emmah Ncube
Influence Of Leadership Styles On Expatriate Nurses' Professional Integration In The Uae, Emmah Ncube
Dissertations
Transnational nurse migration has evoked a growing interest in the phenomenon of professional integration of expatriate nurses into their host societies. Despite research connecting employee and organizational outcomes such as job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior to the quality of leadership styles, there remains a lack of research linking professional integration of expatriate nurses to nurse leadership styles in the UAE. The purpose of this grounded theory study was to develop a theory that would explain how nurse leadership styles and behaviors impacted the professional integration of expatriate nurses into the multicultural work environment of the UAE. The research questions …
Classifying Emotions And Toxicity On Audio To Text Signals From Videos On Youtube, Connice Trimmingham
Classifying Emotions And Toxicity On Audio To Text Signals From Videos On Youtube, Connice Trimmingham
Theses and Dissertations
Recent technological advancements have pushed humans past the boundaries of a computer screen. They have facilitated human-computer-interaction that were once inconceivable including emotional and audio engagement. Users are now able to utilize technology in more human-like ways and instantaneously transfer depth of opinions and emotions. This global prominence of modern technology, specifically with social media, has spawned a new norm, in which it is now a reasonable expectation of encountering high online toxicity on social media platforms. In addition, the complexities of human emotions make it challenging to determine whether toxic comments trigger certain emotions or vice versa. This study …

The ‘Contract’ And Its Discontents: Can It Address Protection Gaps For Migrant Agricultural Workers In Canada?, Tanya Basok, Eric Tucker, Leah F. Vosko, C. Susana Caxaj, Jenna L. Hennebry, Stephanie Mayell, Janet Mclaughlin, Anelyse M. Weiler
Articles & Book Chapters
Canada's Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program has often been portrayed as a model for temporary migration programmes. It is largely governed by the Contracts negotiated between Canada and Mexico and Commonwealth Caribbean countries respectively. This article provides a critical analysis of the Contract by examining its structural context and considers the possibilities and limitations for ameliorating it. It outlines formal recommendations that the article co-authors presented during the annual Contract negotiations between Canada and sending states in 2020. The article then explains why these recommendations were not accepted, situating the negotiation process within the structural context that produces migrant workers' vulnerability, …

Ideologías Y Políticas De Perpetua Ilegitimidad: El Caso De La Enseñanza De Lenguas En México, David Martinez-Prieto
Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications
Based on data collected in central and southern Mexico, this article examines ideologies embedded in the language learning policies of this country. By qualitatively analyzing 72 interviews to 24 participants, field notes, and the author’s reflective journal, this research investigates the impact of language policies amongst teachers from three different states: Puebla (2017, 2019, 2021), Oaxaca (2018), and Tlaxcala (2020-2021). After comparing the situations of participants, I suggest that nativist, (neo)colonial and neoliberal ideologies—which are prevalent in language policies in Mexico—foster the perpetual delegitimization of language teachers.

Errorless, Errorful, And Retrieval Practice For Naming Treatment In Aphasia: A Scoping Review Of Learning Mechanisms And Treatment Ingredients, Kristen Nunn, Sofia Vallila-Rohter, Erica L. Middleton
Moss-Magee Rehabilitation Papers
PURPOSE: Increasingly, mechanisms of learning are being considered during aphasia rehabilitation. Well-characterized learning mechanisms can inform "how" interventions should be administered to maximize the acquisition and retention of treatment gains. This systematic scoping review mapped hypothesized mechanisms of action (MoAs) and treatment ingredients in three learning-based approaches targeting naming in aphasia: errorless learning (ELess), errorful learning (EFul), and retrieval practice (RP). The rehabilitation treatment specification system was leveraged to describe available literature and identify knowledge gaps within a unified framework.
METHOD: PubMed and CINHAL were searched for studies that compared ELess, EFul, and/or RP for naming in aphasia. Independent reviewers …

Joining Bits And Pieces: A Chinese Indonesian Mother–Daughter Collaborative Witnessing As A Resource For Writing An Autobiographical Novel, Alberta N. Adji
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In this article, I as researcher and my mother as collaborator present small stories about our own and my late grandmother’s lived experiences during the New Order and Reformasi eras in Indonesia. Both perform a collaborative witnessing, which is a form of “relational autoethnography” that enables researchers to focus on and evocatively tell the lives of others through conversation and shared storytelling as a source that informs my life writing practice. Collaborating with my mother, this article is a reflection on how I, as a young Chinese Indonesian woman writer, capture and negotiate my family’s hybrid identities as double minorities …
The Spirit Of Gun Laws, Noah Levine
The Spirit Of Gun Laws, Noah Levine
Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar
The firearms debate in the United States often pits public health against freedom. This false dichotomy implies that gun laws, even wise ones, inherently erode individual liberty. Indeed, this appeal to liberty finds fertile ground in the United States, where many Americans intuitively reject any incursion on their freedom. Yet this one-sided conception of liberty is, at best, incomplete: while the government can certainly encroach on our freedom, so too can our fellow citizens.
A historically grounded conception of liberty in the United States includes the sense of security that fosters self-expression without fear of arbitrary constraint. That is, when …
Linguistic Predictors Of Engagement On Anti-Incel Forums, Daniel Beutler
Linguistic Predictors Of Engagement On Anti-Incel Forums, Daniel Beutler
Student Theses
This thesis examines the determinants of social media engagement with extremist views in general and misogynistic ones in particular. The study, which is a part of an ongoing, large-scale examination of online hate, examined posts from r/IncelTears, a sub-forum in the long-form social media Reddit dedicated to attacks on the Involuntary Celibate (‘Incel’) digital communities. Previous research on engagement – and by extension virality – of online posts has broadly implicated linguistic markers of affect, morality, extremism, and social identity. This exploratory study correlated metrics of online engagement such as the number of Upvotes and Comments that each post garnered …

Generative Music With Partitioned Quantum Cellular Automata, Eduardo Reck Miranda, Hari Shaji
Generative Music With Partitioned Quantum Cellular Automata, Eduardo Reck Miranda, Hari Shaji
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Cellular automata (CA) are abstract computational models of dynamic systems that change some features with space and time. Music is the art of organising sounds in space and time, and it can be modelled as a dynamic system. Hence, CA are of interest to composers working with generative music. The art of generating music with CA hinges on the design of algorithms to evolve patterns of data and methods to render those patterns into musical forms. This paper introduces methods for creating original music using partitioned quantum cellular automata (PQCA). PQCA consist of an approach to implementing CA on quantum …

Implicit Gender Bias In The Classroom: Memories From K-12 Education, Melissa J. Marks, Michelle L. Amodei
Implicit Gender Bias In The Classroom: Memories From K-12 Education, Melissa J. Marks, Michelle L. Amodei
Journal of Research Initiatives
Implicit biases affect everyone in society, including within the K-12 education system. This study investigated what memories of implicit gender bias preservice teachers (PSTs) recalled from their K-12 education. These memories may be connected to the PSTs’ embedded implicit biases and indicate the long-term impact of teachers’ biases on students. A total of 141 undergraduate PSTs from two universities were surveyed regarding gender expectations and recognition of LGBTQ+ people. Results indicated an inconsistency between espoused beliefs and practices within the classrooms. Because schools often reflect society’s norms and perpetuate them through implicit bias, understanding what biases are currently accepted and …
Whispers: Cognitive Process In Inter-Semiotic Translation, Yangzhou Bian
Whispers: Cognitive Process In Inter-Semiotic Translation, Yangzhou Bian
Theatre Student Scholarship
The research uses Whispers, a graduate student theater project as the case study to analyze the cognitive process of inter-semiotic translation from different media/semiotic pairs. The study adopts the Interpretive Theory of Translation proposed by Danica Seleskovitch and Marianne Lederer as a point of reference to examine artists' thought processes when translating across sign systems. Spontaneous reflection of the artists, retrospective interviews, and written statements of the artists used during the performance have been collected along with copies of the source and target media. The paper begins with an introduction to the Whispers and the Interpretive Model proposed by Seleskovitch …

New Phenomena In Japanese Youth Language: Contrary Meaning Of Pien, Kinanti Kanya Niramaya, Filia Filia
International Review of Humanities Studies
Youth language is a social dialect language variation that is used by certain age group, has linguistic processes such as significant borrowing, and morphological and semantic manipulation. In Japanese, youth language is called wakamono kotoba (wakamono 'youth', kotoba 'word', 'language'). There seems to be a new phenomenon di Japanese youth language, same word that have contrary meanings. Based on initial observation, in Japanese youth language, the word pien is a word that is used to describe ‘crying’. To approve the word pien has contrary meanings, this study explore the use of pien as a popular word among Japanese young people …
