Computational Approaches To Bilingualism In Spanish Education: A Database For Natural Science Students, Federico Ortega Riba
Computational Approaches To Bilingualism In Spanish Education: A Database For Natural Science Students, Federico Ortega Riba
International Programs
Terminographic resources in Spain, including databases, glossaries, and multilingual dictionaries created by Royal Academies and other organizations are generally designed for experts, rarely to young students. The Ministry of Education and Vocational Training aims to strengthen multilingual and technological skills by the end of Primary Education and promote open educational resources. However, there is a lack of linguistic infrastructure for students in bilingual (Spanish-English) subjects. This work compiles a corpus to analyze common terms in Natural Science, resulting in a database to meet the terminological needs of students aged six to twelve, proposed as a future reference for teachers and …
Global Metaphors For Wisdom: Philosophy As A Species Of The Genus Hao-Xue, Joshua Mason
Global Metaphors For Wisdom: Philosophy As A Species Of The Genus Hao-Xue, Joshua Mason
Comparative Philosophy
Many philosophers have refused to recognize Chinese traditions as genuinely philosophical. The conceptual foundations of these exclusionary efforts appear in Aristotle’s dividing philosophy from rhetoric, then associating philosophy with truth, and rhetoric with metaphor. The Chinese have frequently been defined as metaphorical thinkers, in contrast with the logical, scientific, or literal pursuits of Occidental traditions. Because metaphor is classed with rhetoric, and Chinese was associated with metaphor, critics had a way to say that the Chinese weren’t participating in philia-sophia as rational inquiry into truth. I draw on two strands of 20th century philosophy to move us beyond this …
A Realist Daoism: Reading The Zhuang-Zi With Lao Zi's Daoist Realism, Wai Lok Cheung
A Realist Daoism: Reading The Zhuang-Zi With Lao Zi's Daoist Realism, Wai Lok Cheung
Comparative Philosophy
A realist Daoism is best illustrated through contrasting with something less robust. Chad Hansen’s Daoism may be understood as a linguistic constructivism and is thus a good candidate. I challenge his interpretation of the Zhuang-Zi and respond with a realist understanding of daos. The resultant realist Daoism is to be understood given a Daoist realism from Lao Zi’s Dao-De-Jing, whose realist flavour is constituted by some dao sometimes, if not always, outrunning us. The present paper thus situates Zhuang Zi better as inheriting Daoism from Lao Zi, contributing to classical Daoism with a relativity …

Bridging Family Language Policy And Arabic Language Acquisition By Indonesian Muslim Community: A Conceptual Approach, Muhammad Lukman Arifianto, Zulfa Purnamawati, Iqbal Fathi Izzudin, Zulfa Azalia Mujahidah
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
Family language policy encompasses various aspects, such as identity, cultural heritage, communication, education, and social integration within a family or community. Previous research has primarily focused on the use and preservation of native languages within multilingual societies, leaving a gap in understanding the relationship between family language policies and the acquisition of foreign languages in a familial setting. Consequently, this study presents a conceptual approach that explores key concepts and variables relevant to the family language policy approach, specifically regarding the acquisition of Arabic by the Indonesian Muslim community. By analyzing the connection between the family language policy approach and …

Analysis Of Barriers To Adopting Industry 4.0 To Achieve Agri-Food Supply Chain Sustainability: A Group-Based Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process, Guoqing Zhao, Chenhui Ye, Denis Dennehy, Shaofeng Liu, Antoine Harfouche, Femi Olan
Plymouth Business School
Agri-food supply chains (AFSCs) need to become more sustainable, and Industry 4.0 (I4.0) is a crucial enabler. However, various barriers make adopting I4.0 technologies to achieve AFSC sustainability challenging. Few previous studies have examined China's agri-food industry. Through a literature review and consultation of Chinese experts, we identify 27 barriers in six categories and prioritize these using a group-based fuzzy analytic hierarchy process to produce novel results. First, we identify six new I4.0 adoption barriers closely linked with China's economic, social and cultural environments, including acquisition of intelligent agricultural equipment subsidies based on guanxi. Second, our prioritization of barriers reveals …
Rural Cervical Cancer Survivors’ Experiences Of Gender Roles: An Application Of Social Constructionism, Olivia K. Pointer
Rural Cervical Cancer Survivors’ Experiences Of Gender Roles: An Application Of Social Constructionism, Olivia K. Pointer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Rural cervical cancer survivors, or individuals with a form of cancer that originated in the cervix of the reproductive system, may be uniquely impacted by socially constructed gender roles. The present study utilized the term “females” to describe those who self-identify as having a cervix, which may include cisgender, transgender, intersex, and non-binary gender identities. Rural females have been indicated to hold salience in traditional gender expectations as partners, mothers, community members, and more, which may add survivorship complexity for cervical cancer survivors within this population by to attempting to fulfill gender roles to the pre-cancer level. Moreover, rural cervical …

Diagrams In Involutive Residuated Lattices, Isis A. Gallardo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
First, we show that every distributive lattice-ordered pregroup can be embedded into a functional algebra over an integral chain, thereby improving the existing Cayley/Holland style embedding theorem. Using this result, we demonstrate that the variety of all dis tributive lattice-ordered pregroups is generated by the functional algebra on the integers. Additionally, we prove that the equational theory of this variety is decidable.
Next, we establish that DLP is equal to the join of its subvarieties LPn, where 𝑛 ∈ ℤ+, consisting of 𝑛-periodic ℓ-pregroups. We also prove that every algebra in LPn can be embedded …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the United States, the enrollments of undergraduate and graduate students in language courses other than English have been continuously decreasing in recent years. Previous research proves that there are diverse benefits that learning a language offers, and it is evident that language education is crucial in this globalized world. However, many universities and colleges in the United States are eliminating foreign language programs, which can deprive students of a crucial opportunity to engage in language learning. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore undergraduate students’ experiences and perceptions of foreign language education, and the study was guided …

The Impact Of The First Language Usage For Chinese Undergraduate International Students, Qiunan Liu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
English as the “lingua franca” serves as a bridge across diverse nations, cultures, and economies and plays an important role in modern society, which has increased the number of English language learners around the world. In the United States, over 30% of international students are from China, with the majority being undergraduate students. A significant number of Chinese students need to enroll in English learning courses when they attend universities in the U.S. due to insufficient English language test scores. Chinese international students often incorporate their first language (L1) when they are learning English in the U.S. Therefore, understanding the …

The State Of Elementary School Recess In Georgia: Policy, The Pandemic, And Patterns Of Play, Karyn A. Alee, Erica Decuir, Dawn M. Robinson
Education Faculty Publications
While we continue to see a growing push for the restoration and codification of recess in elementary schools, policy does not necessarily equal practice. Georgia recently passed legislation requiring at least 20 minutes of recess per day for students in PK-5. The purpose of this research study was to survey elementary school educators to reveal the temporal (i.e., duration, frequency, and cancellation practices) and descriptive (i.e., type, equipment, place) characteristics of recess in Georgia’s public elementary schools. The results of this study, which can be summed up statistically and descriptively as less recess overall, and less free play specifically, as …

Just Say Gay: An Exploration Of Authenticity And Connection; Queer Identified Therapists’ Lived Experiences Of Identity-Based Self-Disclosure, Courtney Dunne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The current sociopolitical climate in the United States continues to reinforce the complexities and nuances that mental health providers face when facilitating therapy. Over the past few years, anti-DEI legislation has aimed to control the narrative in educational and therapeutic settings regarding what therapists and educators are permitted to teach and share about themselves (Flannery, 2024). At the same time, anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric continues to dominate the media and further marginalizes individuals whom are in the queer community. In turn, LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face an increased risk for homelessness, substance use disorders, and suicide, which particularly has impacted LGBTQ+ youth …

Impact Of Dialogic Reading Intervention On Language And Literacy Development Of Young Dual Language Learners, Ekta Ghosh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There is a pressing need for research on early language intervention for dual language learners (DLLs) at risk of developmental delays, especially young children who are non-Spanish speakers. Despite the projection that 62% of the nation's children will be children of color by 2050, there is a significant research gap in this area (Lin et al., 2023). This study aims to fill this gap and recommend effective early language interventions for DLLs. The present study uses a single-case design to determine the impact of Dialogic Reading on vocabulary and alphabetical knowledge of preschoolers aged 36 to 60 months in English …

Chicago’S Migrant Serving Ecosystem: Perspectives From Providers On The Frontline, Safa S. Asad
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Global destabilization has resulted in nearly 110 million people forcibly displaced from their homes. Sanctuary cities like Chicago have become “migrant hubs,” seeing thousands of migrants enter the city to access shelter and resources. City officials have called for more support, as the number of migrants has outweighed the number of migrant service providers.
Migrant service organizations play an integral role in the resettlement journey of migrants. These organizations provide direct and indirect services to support their clients. However, as the migrant crisis continues to worsen, it threatens the social safety net established by governments and immigrant serving nonprofit agencies …

Local history museums play a key role in historical education, identity strengthening, and community connections. However, many Chinese Americans are unwilling to visit these museums, which weakens the museums’ positive impact on these communities, and they miss out on opportunities to connect with local history and culture. I focused on 3 important factors that can impact minorities’ engagement—cultural representative, low-cost participation, and interactive visiting experience. I conducted semi-structured individual interviews with 10 U.S. born Asian American adults and conducted case study on several design projects. Inspired by research and user feedback, I created Origin Story Project (OSP) - an integrated …

Evolution On High: A Comparison Of The Physiology And Narrative Representation Of Two Native High Altitude Populations, Taylor Shay Harman
Dissertations - ALL
Abstract This dissertation is an interdisciplinary study of human adaptation to high altitude. High altitude environments are known for being very difficult places for humans to live, for several reasons, but especially because they are characterized by low ambient oxygen tension, i.e., hypoxia. In spite of these challenges, there are several human populations that have lived at high altitude for tens of thousands of years. The two best-characterized highland populations, Andeans and Tibetans, have both been shown to perform better at high altitude than their lowland counterparts. This is thought to be due to a series of adaptations that have …

The American Physical Therapy Association promotes the Annual Physical Therapy Visit. Similar to an older adult who may see his/her medical provider annually, it is recommended that the aging adult see a physical therapist who will perform screening tests for strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, and gait. Early detection of physical decline in aging may result in referral for physical therapy, wellness programming, or medical care. Community members and students experience mutual benefits.

Examining Service-Learning Pedagogical Practice Through Centering Bipoc Student Voices, Nelson Omar Valencia-Garcia, Marilee Coles-Ritchie
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
This study centers BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) students’ experiences in servicelearning courses at a predominantly White college. Researchers conducted eight semi-structured interviews using qualitative case study methods and analyzed the data through a critical consciousness framework. Data illuminated tensions in predominantly White spaces, perils and promises of preparation, and relationality with community partners demonstrating how Whiteness is often centered unintentionally. Based on the data collected, the authors suggest recommendations for implementing pedagogy that addresses the lived experiences of BIPOC students in service-learning courses.
