This research aims to reveal Korean’s perspectives on plastic surgery practices through a corpus-based text analysis of Korean online newspapers. The research used quantitative and qualitative methods to observe keywords, significant collocates, and semantic preference. The data used were 106 opinion articles about plastic surgery in Chosun Ilbo and Donga Ilbo (2010–2019). Keyword analysis shows that the most frequently used keywords are seonghyeong (189 times) and seonghyeongsusul (116 times). Analysis of significant collocates and semantic preferences revealed that plastic surgery was frequently discussed in relation to body parts, people (collocate yeoseong (women), junggukin (Chinese), hwanja (patient), gwangganggek (tourist)), country (collocate …

Horizontal Gene Transfer In Intergenomic Conflicts Between Bacteria And Their Genetic Parasites, Pavithra A.S
Horizontal Gene Transfer In Intergenomic Conflicts Between Bacteria And Their Genetic Parasites, Pavithra A.S
Theses and Dissertations
Bacteria are constantly infected by obligate acellular genetic parasites, such as plasmids and phages. The genetic conflicts between bacteria and their parasites, aggravated by horizontal gene transfer, exert significant ecological and evolutionary pressure on their respective genomes. The eco-evolutionary significance of parasite-derived elements on bacterial genomes is not well understood.
This study explored the genomics of plasmid-derived genetic elements such as antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), type II endonuclease toxin-antitoxin systems (TAs) and endonuclease colicin-like bacteriocin (CLB) operons, and phage-derived prophages of Escherichia coli using bioinformatics and developing novel hybrid agent-based models. We sequenced eight E. coli isolated from local wastewater …

Abnormal Event Detection Using Hypergraph Based Multiple Objects Tracking Techniques In Surveillance Videos, Palanivel S
Theses and Dissertations
Abnormal event detection aims to identify the events that deviate from expected normal patterns. This work primarily focuses on detection of rare events in public places. The existing research challenges in a video-based surveillance systems for the vehicle have been analysed and presence of abnormal objects in traffic-oriented videos have been detected. A novel approach for event summarization and rare event detection has been proposed in this work. The key ingredient in this work is the incorporation of Hypergraph (HG) matching.
Despite the reasonable amount of success achieved by a large number of researchers over the globe, distinguishing important videos …

This review by Dr. Kristin Roberts Raymond, lecturer in the English and Media Studies Department and the Director of ESOL at Bentley University, evaluates three OER textbooks for public speaking: "Exploring Public Speaking," "Speak Out, Call In: Public Speaking as Advocacy," and "Stand Up, Speak Out: The Practice and Ethics of Public Speaking." Each text is assessed for its strengths and weaknesses. The reviewer concludes that a combination of these texts would be ideal for teaching, highlighting the benefit of OER resources in allowing instructors to draw from multiple sources without additional cost to students.

Analysis involved four theories: Rahayu Supanggah’s garap theory, Stenberg’s creativity theory, C. A. van Peursen’s cultural development theory, and Marc Benamou’s rasa theory. There were three stages of data collection: literature study, observation, and interview. Results show three main characteristics of Semarangan gending: irama and laya, garap ricikan, and vocal garap. The tabuhan from this ricikan shows integration of musical styles from other areas, such as Yogyakarta, Banyumas, Surakarta, and East Java. In Semarangan gending, there are rasa …

Authors of scientific articles are faced with two opposing demands: objectivity and critical evaluation when expressing reality and truth. To date, no evaluative language mapping has been performed on Indonesian scientific articles which can accurately describe an article’s degree of objectivity so that it can be used as a tool for objectivizing and negotiating truth. Using the appraisal framework, this research aims to identify and examine these two opposing orientations as they appear in Indonesian scientific articles. The qualitative approach was applied to perform in-depth analysis of interpersonal functions in scientific articles. Data in the form of Indonesian scientific articles …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
“I think I can, I think I can’ puffed “The Little Engine That Could.” The American folktale taught the value of optimism and hard work reflecting a growth mindset belief about abilities. A growth mindset positively impacts academic achievement, motivation, and children’s agency for learning. Few studies have explored how early childhood teachers can develop children’s growth mindsets. We report on a study that developed design principles to assist early childhood teachers to foster a growth mindset in children in early childhood classrooms at one school in Western Australia using design-based research. Two iterations of the principles were designed and …

Check-In-Check-Out Intervention For Jose: A Collaborative Approach To Behavioral Intervention For A Student From A Cld Background, Robai N. Werunga Phd
Journal of Case Learning & Exceptional Learners
Engaging families from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds has been found to yield collateral effects that include positive school outcomes for CLD students with disabilities. However, fostering active CLD family engagement, including those of immigrant status has historically posed some challenges. Additionally, when the student in question has a diagnosis that involves behavioral challenges, school and family interactions tend to be adversarial in nature. In this case study, the author describes the procedures undertaken to implement an intervention that not only addresses targeted behaviors of a student from CLD background, but also solicits and fosters parental involvement.

The role of a teacher in the world of education greatly affects how the quality of students with the expected changes cannot be separated from the responsibility of a teacher in educating, guiding, motivating and being a facilitator for these students. However, low work involvement by teachers is not able to achieve organizational or school success in producing quality successors. The management of solid waste poses a worldwide obstacle in the pursuit of a sustainable society. This issue has intensified with the increase in waste production caused by rapid population expansion, industrialization, and urbanization. The continuously growing volume of municipal solid waste, particularly the substantial volume of organic waste, along with improper disposal practices, results in the release of greenhouse gases and other harmful airborne substances which simultaneously causes health risks and socioeconomic concerns. This article examines various waste-to-energy (energy production in the form of heat and electricity) concepts as well as waste-to-materials (various value-added materials including biofuel, biochemical, char, …

The (Im)Possibility Of Anti-Systemic Politics: Uprisings, Exilic Spaces, And Alain Badiou, Jason C. Mueller
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
The world-system is in crisis, and a flurry of uprisings challenge the mantra that 'there is no alternative' to capitalism. However, some questions remain. What will replace the global capitalist mode of production, and how will those aspiring to transform the system do so? These questions are of relevance to three separate but related domains of research: (1) the study of anti-systemic movements by world-systems analysts; (2) the study of exilic spaces by scholars using an anarchist perspective; and (3) the work of French Philosopher Alain Badiou. This article stages a discussion between these three areas, locating areas in each …

Knowledge Tools For Communication And The Profit Motive, Arthur Suciu
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
This article explores the limits and risks of the domination of the profit ideology outside the economic field, especially in universities and scientific research. The ideology of profit, which starts from relativist premises, justifies its domination by rejecting any kind of radical ideology. As such, the ideology of profit has a totalitarian character. Given that the market instrumentalizes both university training and scientific research, challenging the ideology of profit requires theories and methods that do not correspond to the logic of profit, but instead enable a radical critique of capitalism.
