The Fuzziness Models With The Proposed New Conjugate Gradient Method For The Classification Of High-Dimensional Data In Bioinformatics, Omar Qusay Alshebly, Suhail Najm Abdulla

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

The development of the subject of bioinformatics may be attributed to the exponential growth of biological data, namely the huge amount of high-dimensional gene expression data. The discipline of bioinformatics efficiently tackles issues in molecular biology through the use of optimization, computer science, and statistical methods. The present study introduces a new optimization strategy, namely the proposed conjugate gradient method (PNCG), for the purpose of learning a fuzzy neural network model using the Takagi-Sugeno approach. This study presented a novel algorithm that addresses the issue of delayed convergence seen in the Polak Ribière Polyak (PRP) and Liu-Storey (LS) techniques by …

Grit And The Military Service Member: How Cultivating Grit Enhances Performance, Resilience, And Mental Health, Phillip R. Jenkins Sep 2024

Grit And The Military Service Member: How Cultivating Grit Enhances Performance, Resilience, And Mental Health, Phillip R. Jenkins

Faculty Publications

The transition from asymmetric warfare to Great Power Competition has brought the role played by Airmen to the forefront of the conversation. When uncontested operations, superior weaponry, and more detailed intelligence are not guaranteed, the weight of victory rests on the shoulders of Airmen. The exploration of grit and the role it plays in the development and sustainment of mental wellness, resilience, and performance has emerged in this context as a linchpin quality. The idea that an inherent drive, determination, and strength of purpose could offset the impact of stress—both combat and noncombat—is deeply compelling. However, leaders cannot look to …

Racializing Digital Campus Spaces: A Critical Phenomenological Approach To Understanding (Re)Production Of Whiteness In Digital Campus Ecology, Victoria Elizabeth Callais

Dissertations

The landscape of higher education campus environments continues to change as student populations diversify (Parsons, 2023; Renn & Reason, 2013) and campus spaces extend into the digital realm. This critical phenomenological study examined organizational features that racialize digital campus ecology by examining the phenomena of interest, racialized digital campus spaces (RDCS). Through semi-structured interviews and focus groups with undergraduate students that focused on their experiences with RDCS and semi-structured interviews with administrators that focused on the organizational infrastructure and campus digital culture, findings revealed a complex understanding of campus ecology when reflecting on issues around race. I introduce Augmented Reality …

Exploring The Incumbent Early Childhood Workforce As Teachers Who Student And Students Who Teach: A Phenomenological Study, Kate Maxine Connor Sep 2024

Exploring The Incumbent Early Childhood Workforce As Teachers Who Student And Students Who Teach: A Phenomenological Study, Kate Maxine Connor

Dissertations

The professionalization efforts within the early childhood workforce continue to push for current workforce members to return to college to earn associate or baccalaureate degrees. Leaders of these efforts have called for higher education institutions to be flexible and supportive. At the same time, there is little research on the experiences of teachers returning to college, particularly those attending community colleges where most early childhood higher education programs exist. This hermeneutic phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of early childhood teachers returning to school to earn their Associate of Applied Science degree in Early Childhood while working in classroom settings. …

Rethinking Retrieval Augmented Fine-Tuning In An Evolving Llm Landscape, Nicholas Sager, Timothy Cabaza, Matthew Cusack, Ryan Bass, Joaquin Dominguez

SMU Data Science Review

This study explores the utilization of Retrieval Augmented Fine-Tuning (RAFT) to enhance the performance of Large Language Models (LLMs) in domain-specific Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) tasks. By integrating domain-specific information during the retrieval process, RAG aims to reduce hallucination and improve the accuracy of LLM outputs. We investigate the use of RAFT, an approach that enhances LLMs by incorporating domain-specific knowledge and effectively handling distractor documents. This paper validates previous work, which found that RAFT can considerably improve the performance of Llama2-7B in specific domains. We also expand upon previous work into new state-of-the-art open-source models and other datasets with …

Tulving characterized semantic memory as a vast repository of meaning that underlies language and many other cognitive processes. This perspective on lexical and conceptual knowledge galvanized a new era of research undertaken by numerous fields, each with their own idiosyncratic methods and terminology. For example, "concept" has different meanings in philosophy, linguistics, and psychology. As such, many fundamental constructs used to delineate semantic theories remain underspecified and/or opaque. Weak construct specificity is among the leading causes of the replication crisis now facing psychology and related fields. Term ambiguity hinders cross-disciplinary communication, falsifiability, and incremental theory-building. Numerous cognitive subdisciplines (e.g., vision, …

Translation Policy In The United States, Gabriel González Núñez Sep 2024

Translation Policy In The United States, Gabriel González Núñez

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

As an immigrant-receiving nation, the United States (US) is home to a plurality of languages. This has led to the widespread use of translation in public life. Because of this, the US serves as a case study of how translation policy is developed and deployed in a context of ongoing immigration. This chapter provides that case study using a theoretical approach that is illustrated with historical and practical examples. It first explores the historical development of language ideology in the US and then describes current translation rules, practices and beliefs in the context of the presence of a large number …
