Expanding Healthcare Access For The Undocumented Immigrant Community: The Heal For Immigrant Families Act Of 2023, Perla Torres Estrada

The Gettysburg Journal for Public Policy

When it comes to the topic of universal healthcare, most of us will readily agree that healthcare is a human right. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of who should be granted this right, and if it should be left to the free market to determine access and affordability. Specifically, the political debate on expanding healthcare access to undocumented immigrants in the United States revolve around concerns over costs, legality, and equity. Proponents maintain that it is a human right whereas opponents question the potential burden on taxpayers and the implication for immigration policy. The HEAL …

Stakeholder Perceptions Of A New Learning Management System Implementation At A South African University, Lazola Taho, Walter Uys

African Conference on Information Systems and Technology

Learning Management Systems (LMSs) investments are increasing in response to internal and external factors such as technology and market trends, laws, and regulations. Many LMS implementation initiatives fail despite decades of research on IS success. Challenges faced by sub-Saharan Africa Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s) LMS implementations are becoming context-specific to each institution. Studying implementation success quantitatively has however not provided adequate contextual insights into the complex dynamics of implementation. Research often investigates lecturers and students at the exclusion of other stakeholders. Using Critical Hermeneutics (CH) as a guiding perspective, semi-structured interviews were conducted with decision-makers, administrators, support staff, students, and …

The Importance Of Online Reviews In Developing Economies: Investigating The Perspective Of Consumers In North Africa, Kim Fröhnel, Asma Souissi, Rüdiger Zarnekow

African Conference on Information Systems and Technology

Online reviews play a crucial role in consumers’ online decision-making. While the importance of reviews for consumers in developed economies is well understood, little is known about their importance for consumers in developing economies. Due to different cultural dimensions like uncertainty avoidance, power distance, and individualism, consumers’ review reading and writing behavior in developing economies may differ from that in developed economies. Moreover, e-commerce in Africa will potentially grow in the coming years, raising the interest in understanding the key factors that influence consumers’ online decisions. To fill the research gap, we investigate online reviews’ importance for consumers in North …

Embroidering “Hir Word”: The Assembly Of Ladies, Christine De Pizan, And The Medieval Écriture Féminine, Akari Kobayashi

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

The authorship of the anonymous Middle English poem, The Assembly of Ladies, has been a locus of long-standing critical contestation, and amidst this debate, medieval feminist scholars have continuously and cogently advocated for the poem’s female authorship. Building on these feminist scholarships and simultaneously aiming to move beyond the scope of existing studies, whose discussion has often been limited to whether the poem was written by a woman, this article makes a deliberate and experimental decision in assuming The Assembly’s female authorship and provides a particular feminist reading of the poem enabled by this assumption. This article places the …

Skilled Smiths And Princes Of Elves: The Wayland-Legend And The First Age Of Middle-Earth, Lillian Hammen

Journal of Tolkien Research

This article examines the influence of the legend of Wayland the Smith, a literary figure common to medieval Germanic literature, upon the fantasy writings of J.R.R. Tolkien. Although Tolkien did not publish on Wayland specifically, his scholarly interests included the figure, who frequently appeared in the Old English and Old Norse texts Tolkien studied and taught. Despite clear evidence of Tolkien’s interest in Wayland, and the frequency with which scholarly and creative discourse discussed Wayland in Tolkien’s lifetime, few scholars have engaged the connection between Tolkien’s writings and the medieval figure. This article attempts to address this lacuna in the …

Virginia English Journal

Books that have been on the shelves of classrooms in the commonwealth of Virginia are being removed by overzealous and misinformed parents and school board members. Supporting literacy development means allowing adolescents to read thought-provoking and edgy, high-quality texts, vetted by educated professionals, so that students can be critical curators and consumers of the wide range of media available today. Reading begets better reading, and varied texts build empathy for others. Improved literacy and empathetic criticality will benefit our commonwealth.

The Dynamics And Praxis Of Qur’Anic Tolerance: Selected Muslim Scholars In Their Encounters With Christianity, Henry Francis B. Espiritu

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Contemporary mass media portray Muslim societies as intolerant of other religious, cultural, and ideological beliefs. This article argues that the Qur’an as the primary basis of normative Islam promotes tolerance, harmony and goodwill among all peoples regardless of their differences. The Qur’anic perspective of tolerance provides the basic foundation and dynamics of creating a pluralistic and inclusive society that respects diversity and differences. This article likewise provides the Qur’anic primary textual sources that exemplify Islam's concordant and tolerant approaches toward religious and ideological differences. The Qur’anic metaphysical positionality on the ontological unity of humanity harmonizes well with the social reality …

Locating The Ilokano Baglan In The Gender And Sexuality Continuum, Aurelio Solver Agcaoili Sep 2024

Locating The Ilokano Baglan In The Gender And Sexuality Continuum, Aurelio Solver Agcaoili

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The article is an attempt to recover the baglan tradition of ritual healing among the Ilokano people. Currently, only pejorative comments exist about this baglan tradition whose practices represent the continuum of sex, sexuality, and gender among these groups of people in the Northern Philippines. The argument presented leads to a critique of knowledge formation in colonial Ilocos and unmasks the problem of reproduced versions of the truth about the baglan and their role in the definition of the healthy human being and the healthy community. The ungendered baglan, is, in fact, the person that is all-gender, all-sex, and all-sexuality, …

The Practical Implementation Of Virtual Instruction To Support Cognitive Development In Students With Low-Incidence Disabilities Through Social-Emotional Interactions, Ida Smith

Student Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative phenomenological study examines special education teachers’ perspectives to understand how virtual learning environments can support, through social–emotional interactions, the cognitive development of students with low-incident disabilities in a homebound setting. For this study, which was based on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory (1978), qualitative data were collected through 15 semi-structured interviews with special education teachers with experience providing virtual instruction to students with low-incidence disabilities. The study’s findings showed that special education teachers perceive virtual instruction as benefiting low-incidence disability students in a homebound setting. The data also revealed that specific accommodations and modifications, which the special education teachers believed …

Automated Internationalization Testing Using A Large Language Model, Tracy Wang, Wendy Dai Sep 2024

Automated Internationalization Testing Using A Large Language Model, Tracy Wang, Wendy Dai

Defensive Publications Series

Localization processes ensure that devices and software function correctly and consistently across different languages and for users of different cultures. Internationalization (i18n) testing is an important component of the localization process. Traditional i18n testing techniques are time-consuming, expensive, and difficult to scale since such testing involves substantial manual work. Furthermore, the tests can be of variable quality. This disclosure describes the use of a large language model (LLM) to automatically generate test cases for various internationalization (i18n) scenarios and to validate results generated by the software under test. Test cases are automatically generated by using a LLM to translate to …

Student Engagement In The Asynchronous Learning Model: A Qualitative Study Of K-5 Arkansas Public School Caregiver Perspectives, Angela Maize

Student Theses and Dissertations

In 2019, a coronavirus strand, SARS-CoV-2, caused a global pandemic of respiratory illness, also referred to as the coronavirus (Covid-19). The U.S. government implemented massive school closures as a non-pharmaceutical intervention to mitigate the spread of the virus. The abrupt pivot to the asynchronous learning model resulted in low levels of engagement for many students. As a result of the pivot, students were expected to return to onsite instruction with a fraction of the learning gains, compared to a pre-pandemic school year. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore caregiver perspectives of the level of engagement exhibited …

Community schools are a national initiative gaining traction due to the recent identification of the community school model as an evidence-based approach to education that satisfies requirements set forth by the Every Student Succeeds Act. The community school model centers around four pillars: integrated student support, extended and enriched learning opportunities, active family and community engagement, and shared leadership. With rapidly rising poverty rates and the expansion of community schools across the country, there is a need to ensure the efficiency and effective implementation of the community school model. The problem addressed in this qualitative case study is that the …

Tutors’ Perspectives On Their Work With Multilingual Writers: Changes Over Time And In Response To Revisions In Training, Tetyana Bychkovska, Susan Lawrence Sep 2024

Tutors’ Perspectives On Their Work With Multilingual Writers: Changes Over Time And In Response To Revisions In Training, Tetyana Bychkovska, Susan Lawrence

The Writing Center Journal

A large body of literature on writing center pedagogy suggests that serving multilingual student writers requires approaches different from those developed for native English-speaking students, a difference that may pose unique challenges to tutors. To identify and address these challenges, we elicited tutors’ perspectives on their work with multilingual writers as well as examined how these perspectives change as tutors gain experience and in response to revisions in a training curriculum. Specifically, we analyzed survey responses provided by two consecutive tutor cohorts at three points in their first semester working at the writing center. The overriding theme to emerge from …

Revisiting Articulation: An Approach To Listening And Thinking About Context In The Writing Center, William E. De Herder Iii

The Writing Center Journal

This article offers articulation theory as a tool for listening and thinking about the culture in and around writing centers. After defining a method of articulation analysis that considers articulation, disarticulation, and rearticulation, as well as alignments, contradictions, and tensions within a context, the article performs an articulation analysis on contemporary writing center work. The analysis considers the writing center’s relationship to democracy, multiculturalism, neoliberalism, ethics, and social justice, as shaped by the Great Depression, the Vietnam War, and the 2008 financial crisis. The article concludes with a reflection on the results of the analysis and interventions that may open …
