Engaging Families Of Minoritized Bilingual Preschoolers In Designing A Family Literacy Program, Melany Hooker
Engaging Families Of Minoritized Bilingual Preschoolers In Designing A Family Literacy Program, Melany Hooker
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative exploratory study was to include culturally and linguistically diverse minoritized parents in the design of a family literacy program. Parents of traditionally marginalized emergent bilingual Spanish-speaking preschoolers provided feedback on family literacy resources generally and specific resources from the Systematic and Engaging Early Literacy (SEEL) family literacy program, including the website, a lesson plan, and a training video. Culturally relevant pedagogy and user experience (UX) design were applied to determine what these families found accessible, instructive, and important. Feedback was collected through individual interviews and focus groups using UX design. Thematic analyses revealed five main …

Embracing The "American Dream" Social Media Imaginary Versus The Daily American Nightmare For Immigrant Youth, Miryam Espinosa-Dulanto, Iris Rubi Monroy Velasco
Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications
In this chapter, we embark on a journey to explore the hopes for a better future, the American Dream, shared by a group of transnational, first-generation Hispanic/Latino college students located along the border between the United States of America (Texas) and Mexico (Tamaulipas). We gathered the data through a blend of ethnographic interviews and surveys to unravel, juxtapose, and deliberate upon the experiences shared. Employing a thematic analysis methodology inspired by Braun and Clarke (2006), we categorize the data into two overarching categories. The first category delves into the social and virtual spaces where the ideals of the American Dream …

Knowledge graphs (KGs) possess a vital role in enhancing the semantic comprehension of extensive datasets across many fields. It facilitate activities like recommendation systems, semantic searching, and intelligent data mining. However, lacking information can sometimes limit the usefulness of knowledge graphs (KGs), as the lack of relationships between entities could severely limit their practical application. Most existing approaches for KG completion primarily concentrate on embedding-based methods or just use relational paths, neglecting the valuable structural information offered by node density. This research presents an approach that effectively combines relational paths and the density features of tail nodes to enhance the …

Regulating Chatbot Output Via Inter-Informational Competition, Jiawei Zhang
Regulating Chatbot Output Via Inter-Informational Competition, Jiawei Zhang
Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property
The advent of ChatGPT has sparked over a year of regulatory frenzy. Policymakers across jurisdictions have embarked on an AI regulatory “arms race,” and worldwide researchers have begun devising a potpourri of regulatory schemes to handle the content risks posed by generative AI products as represented by ChatGPT. However, few existing studies have rigorously questioned the assumption that, if left unregulated, AI chatbot’s output would inflict tangible, severe real harm on human affairs. Most researchers have overlooked the critical possibility that the information market itself can effectively mitigate these risks and, as a result, they tend to use regulatory tools …

Between Copyright And Computer Science: The Law And Ethics Of Generative Ai, Devin R. Desai, Mark Riedl
Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property
Copyright and computer science continue to intersect and clash, but they can coexist. The advent of new technologies such as digitization of visual and aural creations, sharing technologies, search engines, social media offerings, and more, challenge copyright-based industries and reopen questions about the reach of copyright law. Breakthroughs in artificial intelligence research, especially Large Language Models that leverage copyrighted material as part of training, are the latest examples of the ongoing tension between copyright and computer science. The exuberance, rush-to-market, and edge problem cases created by a few misguided companies now raises challenges to core legal doctrines and may shift …
Immersion And Understanding: Towards A Personal Theory Of Literature And Culture, Jonathan Len Vowell
Immersion And Understanding: Towards A Personal Theory Of Literature And Culture, Jonathan Len Vowell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
A certain critical consensus has been growing through the late 20th and early 21st centuries that ‘critique’—the general model of and approach for academic analysis for literary and cultural studies in Western universities and academics—has ‘run out of steam’. Its postures of suspicion and negation, its various methods of interrogation and unmasking, and its general orientation towards deconstruction and subversion (as opposed to construction and position), has hit a wall on its returns politically, intellectually, and ethically. Consequently, a crisis in the humanities has emerged (or reemerged) wherein the need has returned to justify what it is exactly that the …

Unmasking The Colors Of Opportunity: First-Generation Black And Hispanic College Students’ Restorative Journeys At A R1 Institution, Tanara Lajeana Teal Tate
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This narrative inquiry study explored how higher education impacted undergraduate students’ retention, focusing on first-generation college students (FGCS) of color at an urban public R1 university in the mid-South. A key objective was to understand these students’ challenges today and how the intersection of their identities influenced their experiences with academic support programs. I also inquired about the strategies students can use to succeed and what they found most helpful during their time at the R1 university. The study, grounded in Critical Race Theory, examined how seven Black and Hispanic undergraduate students navigated systemic barriers, utilized support services, and persisted …

Navigating Change: Youth Civic Engagement At Tampa Heights Junior Civic Association, Alex R. Whitacre
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the impact of gentrification on the Tampa Heights community in Florida, focusing on the role of Tampa Heights Junior Civic Association (THJCA) in fostering civic engagement and youth empowerment amidst urban transformation. Using a mixed-methods ethnographic approach, including participant observation, archival review, spatial analysis, surveys, and interviews, the research investigates how THJCA affiliates conceptualize and respond to gentrification, space, and community change. Employing urban place theories and social capital frameworks, the research challenges deficit-oriented narratives in examining the experiences of current and former residents, the effects of gentrification on youth educational services, and THJCA's strategies for maintaining …
Monsters, Multiplicities, And Liminal Experiences In Doctoral Education: Fabulation As Research Methodology, Anna V. Gonzalez
Monsters, Multiplicities, And Liminal Experiences In Doctoral Education: Fabulation As Research Methodology, Anna V. Gonzalez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to experiment with qualitative research methodologies while exploring the complexities of doctoral education, research practices, philosophies of inquiry, and other topics intersecting with(in) educational scholarship. My vision for this work was fueled by postmodernist critiques of humanist education, frustrations with the methodological status quo pervasive in educational research, and deep concerns about the unsustainability of performance-focused teaching and learning.
The logic I follow in this project is simple: if we—researchers and academics—are to contribute solutions for challenges and ongoing crises in our world, then we must start thinking relationally and in ways more complex …
More Than A Place For Social Capital Creation: Public Library As A Place For Immigrants’ Social Integration, Nafiz Z. Shuva
More Than A Place For Social Capital Creation: Public Library As A Place For Immigrants’ Social Integration, Nafiz Z. Shuva
Publications and Research
Studies have shown that public libraries, one of the most trusted social institutions, play an important role in helping immigrants adjust to their host country. Although there have been quite a few international studies reporting the role that public libraries play in newcomers lives in the host country, few studies, especially in the context of the U.S., comprehensively reported local public libraries’ role in newcomers’ social integration. Previous studies on immigrants’ usage of public libraries have mainly focused on highlighting public libraries as meeting places that facilitate social capital creation for newcomers or describing the usage of public libraries among …

Academic health sciences libraries (“libraries”) offer services that span the entire research lifecycle, positioning them as natural partners in advancing clinical and translational science. Many libraries enjoy active and productive collaborations with Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Program hubs and other translational initiatives like the IDeA Clinical & Translational Research Network. This article explores areas of potential partnership between libraries and Translational Science Hubs (TSH), highlighting areas where libraries can support the CTSA Program’s five functional areas outlined in the Notice of Funding Opportunity. It serves as a primer for TSH and libraries to explore potential collaborations, demonstrating how …

Square Peg In A Round Hole? Sustainability As An Aim Of Antitrust Law, Michał Konrad Derdak
Square Peg In A Round Hole? Sustainability As An Aim Of Antitrust Law, Michał Konrad Derdak
Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies
The ongoing debate on sustainability in antitrust only briefly refers to the established legal methodologies of interpretation. In particular, there seems to be hardly any reflection on the teleological interpretation of competition law in the context of making sustainable development the aim thereof. This is problematic, because a methodologically sound construction of the aims of law is instrumental not only for the interpretation of its provisions, but also for ensuring the rule of law and safeguarding the rights of individuals. This article is an attempt to trigger a discussion in this area by analysing whether promoting sustainability is, or can …
Co-Ethnic Voting And The Analysis Of Trust Levels In Nigeria, Ayorinde Olanrewaju
Co-Ethnic Voting And The Analysis Of Trust Levels In Nigeria, Ayorinde Olanrewaju
Research Papers
Hale's (2008) relational theory posits that when less politically relevant ethnic groups experience marginalization and exploitation from the dominant ethnic groups, it creates an orientation in which these groups trust only their co-ethnics in distributing patronage and public goods. To what extent do variations in institutional trust among ethnic groups influence co-ethnic voting behavior? I argue that levels of trust in the president can be understood as one of the conditions under which voters use ethnic identity to decide their vote choice. When trust in a co-ethnic candidate is high, members of an ethnic group will prefer to vote along …

Understanding Teachers’ Perceptions Of Best Practices For English Language Learners, Joshua Daniel Davis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In a district where only 5% of ELLs were deemed language proficient, the problem was the need to understand teacher perceptions of best practices to increase English language learner (ELL) achievement in reading and writing. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine teacher perceptions of best practices to support ELLs in improving their reading and writing in a heterogeneous high school classroom in a Mid-Atlantic school district. The framework that supported this study was the Cummins model on learners’ language use because it guides teaching and assessing students’ vocabulary acquisition in various contexts. The two research questions probed …
