Afghan Students Are More Than Just English Learners, Farilla Saboor Jan 2025

Afghan Students Are More Than Just English Learners, Farilla Saboor

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis examines the strengths that Afghan students and their families bring to U.S. schools and how these strengths are often overlooked. Drawing on my experience as an Afghan immigrant, math teacher, and bilingual instructional aide, I explore how Afghan students, parents, and teachers describe these cultural, linguistic, and relational assets that shape students’ learning and sense of belonging. I use the Community Cultural Wealth (CCW) and Funds of Knowledge (FoK) as guiding frameworks to understand the aspirational, linguistic, familial, social, navigational, and resistant capital present in participants’ experiences (Moll et al., 1992; Yosso, 2005).

I conducted qualitative interviews with …

Embodied Mythology Of Rhetoric: The Dialectic Of The Gender Binary Logos, Isaac A. Lacap Jan 2025

Embodied Mythology Of Rhetoric: The Dialectic Of The Gender Binary Logos, Isaac A. Lacap

Honors College Theses

Gender is often described as a social construct. This description usually contrasts social construction with other unchanging, unambiguous concepts. Through Chiara Bottici's analysis, I argue the concept of myth breaks us from this dichotomy. By understanding myth as the persistent creation of significance through narratives, we no longer leave myth to the ambit of untruth and unreality. Instead, we see myths as a way to direct people’s actions by giving them a way to see the world. By integrating Bottici with Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology, I argue the significance of myth occurs through embodiment by organizing gestures. These gestures form a system …

The (Im)Possibility Of Separating Rabbinic Texts Into Literary Genres: Form Analysis And Text Linguisticslysis And Text Linguistics, Rivka Ulmer Jan 2025

The (Im)Possibility Of Separating Rabbinic Texts Into Literary Genres: Form Analysis And Text Linguisticslysis And Text Linguistics, Rivka Ulmer

Faculty Journal Articles

This paper analyzes rabbinic homiletic texts from the perspective of form analysis in combination with text-linguistic theories. My study indicates that, from the perspective of functional considerations, it is not meaningful to lift small literary forms from a coherent text that depends on a co-text to create meaning. Additionally, the concepts of genre and parable need to be abandoned and replaced by text-type and mashal. The form-analytical description of rabbinic homilies is based on research performed at the Institute of Judaic Studies in Frankfurt am Main. The text-linguistic concepts are based on strict formalizations that demonstrate textual relations. These theories were …

Popular Originalism, Thomas G. Donnelly Jan 2025

Popular Originalism, Thomas G. Donnelly

Law Faculty Publications

Scholars are obsessed with the Roberts Court’s recent turn to history and tradition. But another source of authority has also emerged as an important feature of the Roberts Court’s approach to constitutional cases. In previous work, I have referred to this source of authority as popular meaning. While original meaning identifies the best reading of the Constitution’s text at the time of its ratification, popular meaning draws on sources of authority outside the courts to capture the constitutional views of the American people today. In this Article, I demonstrate how interpreters might draw on the Constitution’s popular meaning to help …

A Cross-Cultural And Inter-Ethnic Awareness Strategy For Members Of Ipswich, Colchester And Clacton Adventist Churches, Robin Johannes Lewis

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The three multicultural, multi-ethnic (MCME) churches in my district were facing tension among members from diverse cultures, ethnicities, countries of origin, and languages. Factions formed cliques and vied for leadership roles, while some groups appeared to dominate the worship services. Certain members became upset when people with difficult accents from specific language groups led out in services and could not be understood. Others shared their distinctive foods only within their own groups. Some members felt isolated and believed they lacked a voice.

Method

Nine seminars and workshops were organised to raise awareness among the MCME congregants about the causes …

Consensus And Conflict Over Context: Select Criminal Law And Procedure Cases From The Supreme Court's 2024-25 Term, Eve Brensike Primus, Elena Schultz

Articles

In its 2024-2025 Term, the Supreme Court emphasized the utility—and necessity—of context-based, fact-sensitive analyses throughout its criminal law and procedure cases. Though the Justices sparred over how to derive meaning from factual, structural, legal, and historical contexts, they tended to agree that courts should not be artificially restricted from considering the breadth of the record before them.

Understanding The Mechanisms Of Interpretative Change, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl Jan 2025

Understanding The Mechanisms Of Interpretative Change, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl

Faculty Publications

Interpretive methodology changes over time, and we appear to be in a period of particular ferment. In federal statutory interpretation, which is the focus of this Article, several important changes in interpretive methods have occurred in recent decades or are underway. There has been a gradual, decades-long shift away from intentionalist tools like legislative history. In addition, as the culmination of a series of smaller steps, the Supreme Court has just reshaped the doctrine governing deference to agency interpretations, a move that will require years of further clarification. And, although this shift is still taking shape, it appears that some …

Hierarchical Bloom Filter Tree (Hbft): Scalable Geospatial Metadata Indexing For Bigdata Systems, Mrudula Patteparapu

Master's Projects

Big Data infrastructure growth has produced overwhelming metadata volumes which create extensive problems for spatial indexing and both system scalability and database queries. Traditional solutions consisting of R-trees and conventional Bloom filters manage to provide either range query support or approximate membership testing, yet they face performance issues when used at large-scale metadata management. This research proposes Hierarchical Bloom Filter Tree (HBFT) as an improved framework that integrates hierarchical spatial partitioning with partitioned, scalable, cuckoo, and striped Bloom filter variants based on existing studies in hierarchical and probabilistic indexing. The complete evaluation process shows that HBFT outperforms PostGIS (an industry-standard …

Semanticgraphrec: Lightweight Hybrid Recommendations Powered By Semantic Item Representations And Graph Collaborative Filtering, Devi Surya Kumari Akula Jan 2025

Semanticgraphrec: Lightweight Hybrid Recommendations Powered By Semantic Item Representations And Graph Collaborative Filtering, Devi Surya Kumari Akula

Master's Projects

Graph neural networks (GNNs) have emerged as a powerful paradigm for collaborative filtering. However, they often fall short in fully leveraging side textual content, resulting in suboptimal recommendations. To address this limitation, we explore the synergy between GNNs and deep contextual embeddings of item descriptions, aiming to enhance recommendation quality on the Amazon-Books dataset. We propose SemanticGraphRec, which combines GNNs with Large Language Models (LLMs) to leverage both collaborative filtering and textual item content. Experimental results demonstrate that incorporating semantic item embeddings produced by fine-tuning LLMs consistently improves performance. Our approach enhances recommendation relevance in sparse data scenarios by leveraging …

Multimodal Deception Detection Via Audio-Text Fusion With Deep Learning And Asr, Xiangyi Li Jan 2025

Multimodal Deception Detection Via Audio-Text Fusion With Deep Learning And Asr, Xiangyi Li

Master's Projects

Emotion detection plays a crucial role in human-computer interaction, enabling machines to recognize and respond appropriately to human emotional states. This project explores a two-stage approach to emotion detection using multimodal data, first predicting dimensional values (Arousal, Valence, Dominance) from textual and audio inputs, then mapping these representations to discrete emotion categories. We compare this approach with direct categorical classification using transformer-based language models like BERT, RoBERTa, and DeBERTa for text processing, alongside various audio feature extraction methods, including MFCCs and spectrograms. Using the IEMOCAP dataset, we evaluate both approaches across text-only, audio-only, and multimodal configurations. Our findings reveal that …

Galora: A Lightweight Graph-Aware Llm Framework For Node Classification On Text-Attributed Graphs, Mayur Choudhary Jan 2025

Galora: A Lightweight Graph-Aware Llm Framework For Node Classification On Text-Attributed Graphs, Mayur Choudhary

Master's Projects

With the exponential rise of language models (LMs) and their potential to understand semantic relationships, large LMs are being used across a wide range of applications. Text-attributed graphs (TAGs) are one notable example where LLMs can be combined with Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to enhance node classification results. TAGs associate textual content with each node and are commonly seen in various domains such as social networks, citation graphs, recommendation systems, etc. Effectively modeling TAGs would enable deeper insights into different aspects of the graph and improve decision-making in relevant domains. We present GaLoRA, a parameter-efficient framework to integrate structural information …

Transforming Chatbot Text: A Sequence-To-Sequence Approach To Human-Like Text Generation, Natesh Reddy

Master's Projects

With the advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, the boundary between text written by a human and that created by AI has become blurred. This poses a threat to systems designed to detect AI-generated content. In this work, we adopt a novel strategy to adversarially transform GPT-generated text using sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq) models, to make the text more human-like. We concentrate on improving GPT-generated sentences by including significant linguistic, structural, and semantic components that are typical of human-authored text. The goal is to then use this transformed data to train a more robust detection model. Our experiments show …

Maple: Malware Analysis Through Projection Of Low-Dimensional Embeddings, Quang Duy Tran

Master's Projects

Machine learning has become a popular and powerful tool for malware analysis and detection. With the rise in popularity of natural language processing (NLP) techniques, researchers can now extract contextual embeddings from malware opcode sequences, enabling the capability to analyze hidden malware patterns and advanced code obfuscation strategies. However, unlike malware binaries, which can be directly visualized as images, these embeddings exist in high-dimensional spaces, making it difficult to observe their global patterns or spatial structures. In this paper, we propose a framework for visualizing malware embeddings in lower-dimensional space using various dimensionality reduction techniques. Our approach converts malware binaries …

The large volume of legal cases presented by judicial professionals has made it
challenging to study and predict results. With advances in research methods and
technology, predicting law cases in a more accurate manner has become an important
trend. Prediction tools based on AI may help manage a large number of legislative
texts and documents that cannot possibly be fully read, reduce the number of cases
to be seen, and give accurate outcomes of how cases may turn out. Now, when
we look into the current AI legal prediction tools in this domain, they mostly lack
efficiency and interpretability, the …

Joseph Smith Jr. As A Translator: The Book Of Abraham As A Case Study, Stephen O. Smoot Jan 2025

Joseph Smith Jr. As A Translator: The Book Of Abraham As A Case Study, Stephen O. Smoot

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This paper examines Joseph Smith’s approach to translation, using the Book of Abraham as a case study to explore the interplay between divine revelation and human participation in scriptural production. While the Book of Abraham incorporates both ancient and modern elements, its unique synthesis resists simple categorization as either an unblemished Abrahamic autograph or a purely nineteenth-century pseudepigraphon. Drawing on historical evidence and textual analysis, this paper aims to illuminate Joseph Smith’s role as both translator and revelator, offering insights into how Latter-day Saints might understand the complex process of producing sacred texts.

Listening To Cursive: The Roles Of Regional Identity And Folk Beliefs In Perceptual Cue-Weighting, Stella Takvoryan Jan 2025

Listening To Cursive: The Roles Of Regional Identity And Folk Beliefs In Perceptual Cue-Weighting, Stella Takvoryan

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

Listeners use knowledge acquired from experiences to weight phonetic-level cues to phonological contrasts. Phonetic knowledge is imbued with expectations about the contexts in which cues covary, speakers of a variety, and identity categories or constructs, so it can be challenging to distinguish expectations about variation from expectations about speakers. This study aims to explore the extent that expectations about iconic vowel quality variation in Southern American Englishes can drive cue-weighting. Listeners categorized stimuli with vowel qualities synthesized from an [ɛ]-[eɪ] continuum from a Southern and a non-Southern talker, with duration manipulated in tandem. Half of the participants saw a label …

Ai, Post-Truth Realities, And Thai Students’ Information-Seeking Behavior, Pavel Slutskiy Jan 2025

Ai, Post-Truth Realities, And Thai Students’ Information-Seeking Behavior, Pavel Slutskiy

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper investigates how ai challenges traditional verification, citation, and evaluation principles, thereby eroding truth. ai-generated content, lacking verifiable citations, operates on probabilistic models that present information as probable rather than factual. The widespread reliance on ai for information-seeking risks diminishing critical evaluation, blending fact with fiction, and compromising academic integrity. To explore these effects, a mixed-method study was conducted involving 240 Chulalongkorn University students who used various online resources like Google, Wikipedia, and ChatGPT to research Rudolf Carnap’s verificationism views. Their choices were analyzed to assess dependency patterns on these platforms. Further, a qualitative analysis compared ai-generated responses with …
