Reading, Rending, And Queering The Web Of Story With The Lenses Of “Con-Creation” And Process Theology, Cameron Bourquein, Nick Polk Jan 2025

Reading, Rending, And Queering The Web Of Story With The Lenses Of “Con-Creation” And Process Theology, Cameron Bourquein, Nick Polk

Mythopoeic Society Seminar Proceedings

“Sub-creation” within Tolkien’s narrative and extra-narrative works is routinely exhibited not as monolithic but rather as (literally and figuratively) polyphonic. In this joint paper Bourquein proposes that the Legendarium can be read through the lens of “con-creation” (total, continuous, collective, creative activity) both internally (as events in the Secondary World) and externally (as both a text and a pseudohistory in the Primary World). This approach levels the playing field between all actors in—and readers of—“The Drama,” providing a queer approach to interpretive-creative activity when compared to “orthodox” doctrines of creation. Polk further argues that con-creation resonates with process theologies of …

Sauron, Seduction, And The Queering Mechanism Of The Ring, Mercury Natis Jan 2025

Sauron, Seduction, And The Queering Mechanism Of The Ring, Mercury Natis

Mythopoeic Society Seminar Proceedings

It has often been argued that Sauron is barely present in The Lord of the Rings, existing as a villainous presence on the margins of the narrative. This paper will argue that Sauron is present throughout the entire narrative as manifested in the Ring, and through the Ring’s presence as a queering device. The Ring acts out Sauron’s seduction mechanism, a defining character trait as portrayed in the Silmarillion. It is this seduction mechanism that allows the Ring to act as a queering agent throughout the narrative. Ring-lust is inherently queer as it projects a male-presented character’s seductive powers, …

The English And The Welsh: Tolkien’S Rewriting Of History In The Legendarium, Alexander Retakh Jan 2025

The English And The Welsh: Tolkien’S Rewriting Of History In The Legendarium, Alexander Retakh

Journal of Tolkien Research

Early legendarium is often called a "mythology for England," while Tolkien's later tales have been described as mythologies for Britain (by Dimitra Fimi) or Englishness (by Thomas Honegger). Later legendarium still contains fictional versions of English-like peoples, the Hobbits and the Rohirrim. Their construction leads to a re-construction of elements of English history in the subcreation, that often produces fictional analogs not only of the English but of the Welsh. How Tolkien described contacts between the English and their closest neighbors reveals his idea of Englishness (his own national identity) and its place in the narrative.

Naming Names: Phenomenology And Pseudonyms, Rebecca Woods Jan 2025

Naming Names: Phenomenology And Pseudonyms, Rebecca Woods

Plymouth Interdisciplinary Education Open Journal

This short opinion piece uses my experiences of formulating pseudonyms during my doctoral project as a way of examining this task. Names are our public labels and as such they are part of self-perception and are catalysts for responses to others. Pseudonyms are not empty; they are cultural artefacts in academia which form connections with participants. The issues addressed with regard to re-naming are research context, ontology, method, navigating sensitivities, contextual determination, concluding with a review of congruence and robustness. The task of generating pseudonyms has the potential for being an exciting way of encapsulating how researchers consider participants and …

There are multiple guidelines from publishers and organizations on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in publishing.1–5 However, none are specific to family medicine. Most journals have some basic AI use recommendations for authors, but more explicit direction is needed, as not all AI tools are the same.

Recasting Gender Roles: A Study Of Indian Television Commercials (2011– 2020), Himika Akram, Alicia Mason

Faculty Submissions

On media, television commercials (TVCs) play a significant role in shaping societal perceptions of gender roles. This study examines gender depictions in Indian TVCs, focusing on key dimensions such as gender ratio in primary characters, voiceovers, settings (home, outdoor, workplace), and product categories. A content analysis of 120 TVCs from Indian brands (2011–2020) was conducted, with coding performed by the researcher. Findings reveal that men were primary characters in 54.6% of the advertisements, while women featured in 45.4%. Male voiceovers dominated at 70.1%, compared to 29.9% for females. Women were portrayed in home settings in 66.7% of TVCs, while men …

Sentimental Aesthetics In D-Flat Major: Adagio Of Haydn’S Hob. Xvi:46, Keri Hui Jan 2025

Sentimental Aesthetics In D-Flat Major: Adagio Of Haydn’S Hob. Xvi:46, Keri Hui

HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America

Although the concept of key characteristics was widely affirmed in the eighteenth century, the key of D-flat major was rarely adopted by composers. The so-called Romantic period, however, saw a remarkable increase in the use of this key, as demonstrated in the many well-known pieces written by composers such as Chopin. The article first reviews the different receptions of D-flat major in the eighteenth century and explores how the clavichord might have allowed Haydn to hear D-flat major as a key of sentimentality, one that echoes Christian Daniel Friedrich Schubart’s interpretation. It then examines ways in which Haydn presents the …

Design Of Curriculum Adaptation Model Based On Decision Support Systemdesign Of Curriculum Adaptation Model Based On Decision Support System, Trisniawati Trisniawati, Dinar Westri Andini, Achmad Hufad, Endang Rochyadi, Imas Diana Aprilia

Journal of ICSAR

Inclusive education aims to provide access and accommodation for students to achieve achievements based on their competence. A curriculum adaptation model has been developed as a guide to fulfill the student learning needs. This model is inefficient because the teacher considers the initial assessment and modifications/adjustments in learning outcomes troublesome. This study explains the development of a more efficient and attractive decision-support technology-based curriculum adaptation model. This technology development results 6-step system development process. The development design is carried out by implementing a decision support system that can reveal the student characteristics. It also can recommend student learning needs and …

Memory Distortions In Maladaptive Daydreaming: A Study On Source Confusion And Fantasy-Driven Confabulations, Eli Somer Ph.D., Henry Otgaar Ph.D.

The Qualitative Report

Although vivid fantasizing involves the creation of imagined realities that share similar processes with memory source confusion, there has been limited research on the connection between these constructs. The current study used a thematic analysis approach to investigate the perceived relationship between an extreme form of dissociative absorption called maladaptive daydreaming (MD), source confusion, and memory errors. We interviewed 41 participants who self-identified as coping with MD, volunteered for MD research, and exhibited elevated MD scores. These questions delved into topics such as instances where they had difficulty distinguishing between daydreams and reality and situations where daydreams influenced their interactions …

Three Greek Inscriptions From The Monastery At Nahal Pehar (Giv‘Ot Bar), In The Northern Negev, Leah Di Segni Jan 2025

Three Greek Inscriptions From The Monastery At Nahal Pehar (Giv‘Ot Bar), In The Northern Negev, Leah Di Segni

'Atiqot

Three Greek inscriptions were discovered within a small coenobium at Giv‘ot Bar in the northern Negev. One was set in a mosaic pavement in the chapel, and the other two were painted in red ink on building blocks found in the debris near the entrance to the chapel. The mosaic inscription mentions a string of names, probably of the monks who cared for the laying of the mosaic pavement in the chapel, or perhaps for the foundation of the coenobium. The two other inscriptions are epitaphs, indicating that the chapel was also used for burial. One epitaph mentions a date …

Intermediate Bronze Age, Middle Bronze Age Ii And Iron Age Ii Pottery From Nahal Refa’Im, Lilly Gershuny

'Atiqot

The pottery assemblage from the Naḥal Refa’im site originated in three different archaeological contexts: pits, structure(s) and a burial cave. These findings attest that the main period of occupation was during the Intermediate Bronze Age. One pit may have been reused for burial in Middle Bronze Age II, and the burial cave was visited in Iron Age II, possibly by the inhabitants of nearby Khirbat er-Ras.

Sixth–Seventh-Century Ce Armenian Inscriptions Of A Monastic Community In Jerusalem, Michael E. Stone Jan 2025

Sixth–Seventh-Century Ce Armenian Inscriptions Of A Monastic Community In Jerusalem, Michael E. Stone

'Atiqot

Excavations in the Musrara neighborhood of Jerusalem uncovered four Armenian inscriptions within a monastic complex founded in the fifth–sixth centuries CE. The inscriptions were found on a mosaic floor, on tombstones and on a large pottery bowl, and together with the Birds Mosaic, they probably formed part of one monastic complex, in which Armenians played a significant role. As there is no hint in the historical sources of the existence of this complex, the archaeological discovery contributes new historical information concerning the Christian, and particularly Armenian settlement in Jerusalem in the seventh century CE.

Literatures Dreaming Of A Better World On Teaching 21st-Century Philippine Literatures, Edgar Calabia Samar Jan 2025

Literatures Dreaming Of A Better World On Teaching 21st-Century Philippine Literatures, Edgar Calabia Samar

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

This paper starts on the assumption that literature does not simply reflect reality— it shapes the conditions by which that reality can be reimagined. To teach twentyfirst- century Philippine literature is not to fix a canon or reinforce a curriculum, but to reframe possibility: in language, in form, in pedagogy, and in community. It proposes a method of engaging with the teaching of twenty-first-century Philippine literatures today: PAKI. The acronym stands for Pakikisangkot (Engagement), Ambisyon (Ambition), Kahusayan (Excellence), and Inmortalidad (Immortality). PAKI is also an affix that becomes a word meaning care, which in a classroom saturated with distraction, is …

Rereading Nick Joaquin As A Devil’S Advocate “La Naval De Manila” (1943) In Context, Luisa L. Gomez

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Nick Joaquin characterized himself as a “devil’s advocate” for taking contrarian positions in Philippine cultural history. His early essay “ La Naval de Manila” is taken as an example of such. A re-examination of the essay within its original context of the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines, however, reveals that Joaquin’s early historical imagination must be understood less as an act of rebellion and more as a product of negotiation. It navigates multiple audiences and overlapping empires—the Spanish past it venerates, the American period whose language it uses, and the Japanese present that enabled its publication. Its power lies not …

Acquiring Ethical Ai, David S. Rubenstein Jan 2025

Acquiring Ethical Ai, David S. Rubenstein

Florida Law Review

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how the federal government operates. Under the right conditions, AI systems can solve complex problems, reduce administrative burdens, improve human decisions, and optimize resources. Under the wrong conditions, AI systems can lead to widespread discrimination, invasions of privacy, and the erosion of democratic norms. A burgeoning literature has emerged to square algorithmic governance with the precepts of constitutional and administrative law. Federal procurement law, however, remains a dangerous blind spot in the reformist agenda. This Article pivots into that neglected space and emerges with comprehensive framework for acquiring ethical AI. Toward that end, the Article …

"It's Definitely New And Different...It's Really Engaging": Understanding The Power Of Storytelling Towards Secure Password Creation, Rizu Paudel, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen

Computer Science Student Research

There is a dearth in existing literature to attain systematic understanding of leveraging digital storytelling in security designs. As we begin to address this gap, we focused on user authentication where the existing password composition policies and password meters often fail to help users around creating a strong and memorable password. To this end, we conducted a lab study with 19 participants, where we updated our initial designs in an iterative manner based on their feedback. We then conducted a between-subject online study with 104 participants over Amazon Mechanical Turk to evaluate our designs. We found that all of our …
