Exploring Experience Of Autism Among School Staff And Parents Of Autistic Children, And The Relevance Of Totalising And Non-Totalising Approaches To Facilitate Understandings., Emin Cetinbas
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
This thesis explored how the parents and school staff (teachers and teaching assistants) of primary aged autistic children understand and experience autism, including observation of the children they care for and educate. Totalising was used as a framework for conceptualising their understanding and use of non-totalising approaches such as externalising was also explored. Specific questions centred on a) how parents and teaching staff understand and experience autism in terms of the child being similar or different to other children, b) how relevant totalising is as a concept to aid in understanding of how the parents and teaching staff view autistic …

Perceptions And Role Of Cultural Competency In Clinical Social Work Practice, Vivian Adelaide Aba Dadzie
Perceptions And Role Of Cultural Competency In Clinical Social Work Practice, Vivian Adelaide Aba Dadzie
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In practice, social workers are expected to translate cultural competency skills and knowledge they have acquired to handle diverse clients whose gender, racial, ethnic, religious, and personal beliefs and orientations can conflict. Using a qualitative research approach, the study addressed perceptions and roles of cultural competence in social work practice. Three research questions guided the study. The Campinha-Bacote framework of culturally competent healthcare was used for this study. The study involved employing thematic analysis to analyze research questions. It was determined that social workers must meet clients where they are culturally, respecting and learning from them to adapt interventions accordingly. …
Leadership Development In Millennial Corporate Employees With Nonnative Accents, Clara Philor
Leadership Development In Millennial Corporate Employees With Nonnative Accents, Clara Philor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Employees with nonnative accents sometimes avoid leadership roles, engage less in the workplace, and perform poorly. Organizational leaders need to understand how the challenges of individuals with nonnative accents specifically affect millennials. Grounded in attribution theory and social identity theory, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how millennial employees with nonnative accents experience leadership opportunities in the corporate workplace. The participants were 10 millennial corporate employees in the United States with nonnative accents working toward or already holding leadership positions. Data were collected using in-depth interviews for thematic and interpretive phenomenological analysis. Seven themes emerged: (a) challenges …
Fetal Personhood And Access To Reproductive Rights: Power And Precarity In Post-Roe America, Jainab Banu
Fetal Personhood And Access To Reproductive Rights: Power And Precarity In Post-Roe America, Jainab Banu
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper delves into the concept of “fetal personhood” and dissects how lawmakers systematically deploy rhetorical agency in policy to draw demarcating lines between demographic groups in post-Roe America. After abortion was legalized in 1973, the number of women opting for abortion rose significantly. Even after legalization, however, underrepresented and marginalized women struggled to access safe and high-quality healthcare, and many of them risked self-induced abortions. Since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, women with financial affluence can still travel to states where abortion is not banned to access their reproductive rights; however, women with low income may not …

Initiating An Epistemic Rupture: Exploring Contraceptive Awareness In Janhit Mein Jaari (2022) And Chhatriwali (2023), Parvathy N, Priyanka Tripathi
Journal of International Women's Studies
In the context of social change, cinematic representations play a pertinent role in challenging existing knowledge systems, disrupting societal norms, and provoking critical reflections among audiences. The paper’s primary objective is to highlight the gendered burden upon women in India regarding the contraception narrative and its significance in ensuring reproductive justice. By analyzing two recent Hindi films, Janhit Mein Jaari [Issued in Public Interest] (2022) and Chhatriwali [Woman with Umbrella] (2023), the paper further aims to shed light on how these movies incite an epistemic rupture by challenging deeply ingrained beliefs and norms surrounding contraception. This …
Motherhood, Infertility, And Femininity In Fadia Faqir’S Pillars Of Salt, Fozia Sheikh, Munejah Khan
Motherhood, Infertility, And Femininity In Fadia Faqir’S Pillars Of Salt, Fozia Sheikh, Munejah Khan
Journal of International Women's Studies
In the patriarchal tradition of the Arab world, women are often treated as commodities, and their autonomy and choices are disregarded. Family honour is tied to women’s virginity, leading to strict control over their desires and sexuality (Khan 3). Moreover, women are confined to roles as biological and cultural procreators, reinforcing a narrow understanding of femininity (Chouiten and Khireddine 40) and tightly weaving womanhood with motherhood. This essay examines Fadia Faqir’s novel Pillars of Salt (1996) by using a feminist framework, particularly Adrienne Rich’s theory of motherhood. The narrative reveals the brutal realities faced by Arab women, particularly those incapable …

The growth of indigenous research methodologies and calls for data sovereignty are reshaping the discourse around evidence-based policymaking. This article summarizes the development and validation of the ‘Imi Pono Hawai‘i Wellbeing Survey, which examines wellbeing from indigenous, holistic, and strengths-based perspectives. The survey is anchored to a Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) model of wellbeing created through a community-participatory process involving diverse stakeholders. Early results show Native Hawaiians to be major contributors to Hawai‘i’s wellbeing, consistently reporting higher rates than non-Hawaiians for civic engagement, family relationships, and spirituality, as well as connections to culture, ‘āina, and community. This project informs strategic …

Matching Of Homologous Recording Channels Of Substation Protection Devices Based On Feature Enhancement, Shurong Peng, Lijuan Guo, Huixia Chen, Guannan Wang
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
Relay protection device is one of the important equipment for collecting fault recording data. Comparison and analysis of homologous recording data can realize fault diagnosis, but due to the lack of standardization for the naming format of the recording channel, it is difficult to match the homologous recording channels. In this paper, a matching method for homologous recording channels of protection devices based on feature enhancement is proposed. Firstly, the recording channel names are feature-enhanced by means of synonym replacement, text expansion, and regular expression algorithms. Then, the Pkuseg word segmentation tool is used to segment the recording channel names, …

Verbal And Numeric Eyewitness Confidence Differentially Affect Decision-Making, Pia Pennekamp
Verbal And Numeric Eyewitness Confidence Differentially Affect Decision-Making, Pia Pennekamp
Psychological Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Eyewitness confidence is typically communicated verbally (e.g., certain). Interpretations for verbal confidence statements are variable which could affect decision-making. I explored the extent to which confidence format (i.e., verbal vs. numeric) influences juror decision-making. Participants (N = 468) read a trial vignette in which an expert witness draws attention to the eyewitness's confidence in their suspect identification (uncertain, or certain, or 28%, or 88%). Participants rated the expert's recommendation, rendered a conviction decision, and provided confidence in their decision on a scale of 0 = Not at all confident to 10 = Completely confident. Mock-jurors were more likely to convict …

Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are shared through various dissemination strategies using a range of dissemination products and channels. However, users may have different needs for accessing and understanding them. Patients and carers from low- and middle-income countries might face challenges in accessing CPGs such as inadequate systems for printed book distribution and insufficient and substandard photocopies. Many organizations offer lengthy documents, but busy healthcare workers may prefer shorter, digital versions. Digital CPGs can be sent through different channels such as email, newsletters, or social media. How users feel about these products (e.g., clinical protocol, educational material or decision aids) and …

Tuan's Topophilia: The Making Of A Citation Classic, Dean Sinclair
The Geographical Bulletin
First published in 1974, Yi-Fu Tuan's work Topophilia has become one of the most cited works in human geography. Using the method of citation analysis and data from the Citation Indexes, this paper explores the frequency of Topophilia's inclusion as a reference in scholarly literature. A temporal trend is identified, which indicates that citation to Topophilia rose in the late 1970s, dropped in the early 1980s, but rose again in the late 1980s. Within journals, the references to Topophilia by geographers has declined since the 1980s while citations in literature in the humanities has increased since the late 1980s. A …

Teaching The Researched Family Profile Essay As Meaningful Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy And Counterstory, Amy L. Garrett Brown
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
My students have been asked to create a researched narrative about their family history (the definition of “family” is loose and includes families of choice) using personal interviews, artifacts, research and reflection. They will mix the voices of their family members with the voices of scholars and historians from the university library and databases. This is a conversation. In many ways, these are counterstories. In order to focus on using Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (Alim and Paris) with this assignment, I thought about several of the tenets of CSP: “Instead of being oppressive, homogenizing forces, CSP asks us to reimagine schools …
The Melanesian Triad Of Unity, Ibrahim Peyon
The Melanesian Triad Of Unity, Ibrahim Peyon
Antropologi Indonesia
In the Melanesian worldview, humans, land, waters, plants, animals and the entire universe were created by the Creator God, and this is the essence of the original religions in Melanesia. This paper investigates this basic Melanesian philosophy, which is called the Melanesian Triad of Unity here. Oneness denotes God the Creator as the core entity, the parts of his body constituting all beings and the universe. The three principles are 1) one nation, 2) one soul and one spirit, and 3) one land and nature. All the elements are composed naturally in these three principles. As argued in this paper, …

Matthew For The Defense: Identifying The Rhetorical Purpose Of Matthew's Heptadic Γέγραπται Passages, Donald C. Mcintyre
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Heptadic formulations are common throughout ancient Near Eastern, Second Temple, and biblical literature. Frequently, heptadic formulations are debated due to the lack of consistent identification criteria. This study identifies a heptadic formulation of γέγραπται passages in Matthew’s Gospel and seeks to evaluate the legitimacy of that heptadic formulation through applying strict identification criteria. Through those criteria, it was discovered that the Gospel of Matthew invites the reader to take notice of numerological data through the genealogy and continues to employ numerology throughout the Gospel. That fact being established, Matthew then employed the γέγραπται formula a total of nine times with …

Immigrants and refugees resettling in the United States face persistent challenges to integration which are often filled by community-based ethnic organisations (CBEOs) and their leaders, who are often immigrants and refugees themselves. There is a dearth of research on how these CBEO leaders make meaning of their leadership role based on their lived experiences and intersecting identities. Seven purposively selected immigrant and refugee CBEO leaders were interviewed to expand our understanding of the impact of immigrant and refugee positionalities on philosophies of leadership, contextual human services conditions that impact diverse perspectives and construction of leadership diversity in the human services …

Integrating Intercultural Competencies In An Introductory Business Information Literacy Course, Annette Bochenek, Heather A. Howard, Zoeanna A. Mayhook
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Librarians at a large Midwestern university integrated intercultural competencies into an information literacy course taught annually to over 100 first-year business students. The interventions aim to improve intercultural skills and characteristics as defined by the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AACU) Intercultural Knowledge and Competence VALUE Rubric. Student intercultural competencies were assessed via online surveys according to the VALUE Rubric, comparing pre-, retrospective, and post-self-assessments. Students' intercultural competencies changed as a result of engaging with the course material. This paper describes the classroom interventions implemented by librarians, results from survey data analysis, and implications for library instruction.
