A New Way For Justice For Families Of Schoolchildren With Disabilities? A Case Note On Luna Perez V. Sturgis Public Schools, Kevin R. Hart

New Mexico Law Review

For years, the majority of courts have ruled that parents of children with disabilities were required to exhaust special education due process procedures before filing civil actions under other disability statutes. Change would come through Luna Perez v. Sturgis Public Schools. In Luna Perez, a deaf student, Miguel Luna Perez, was denied a free and appropriate education for eleven years. After settling the case under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Mr. Luna Perez (initially through his mother, but later continuing on his own) filed a claim for compensatory damages under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section …

Heritage Language Learners In The Foreign Language Classroom, Annabel Noar Feb 2025

Heritage Language Learners In The Foreign Language Classroom, Annabel Noar

Journal of Graduate Education Research

Heritage language learners are a heterogenous group themselves, and prevalent contrasts exist between them and foreign language learners. This presents challenges for the amalgamation of heritage language learners and foreign language learners within a single language classroom. Reviewing relevant literature, this paper discusses the differences between heritage language learners and foreign language learners, and how these can be accounted for by educators. It argues that, without specific, individualised differentiation, the foreign language classroom is inappropriate for the heritage language learner due to its inability to sufficiently account for their heterogeneity, diverse backgrounds and unique motivations for language learning. The difficulty …

The Ability Of Chatgpt To Aid In The Rapid Development Of Inoculation Message Treatments: A Case Study And Recommendations, Alicia Mason, Josh Compton, Griffin Cooper

Faculty Submissions

One of the most widely known types of AI technologies in recent years is ChatGPT. ChatGPT is a state-of-the-art language model that has revolutionized natural language processing by generating human-like text with context and coherence, enabling new possibilities for human-AI interaction (Brown et al., 2020). This case study reports on a 10-week conversational AI training initiative to assess whether ChatGPT4 can (a) identify the structural elements and features of conventional inoculation messages (i.e., forewarnings and preemptive refutations); (b) augment inoculation message design features (i.e., linguistic signatures, language, and length); (c) adapt messages for specific audiences (i.e., younger populations, experts); and …

Hear’Em Out! 10th-Grade Student Interest In And Experiences Of Stem At An International High School In Honduras, Blake B. Swanson

Doctorate in Education

Our world’s needs are rapidly shifting due to technology and innovation. Yet is education changing to appropriately prepare students? Are students even interested in pursuing an education oriented around science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)? Dominant theorists in this arena have been Jacqueline Eccles and Allan Wigfield with Situated Expectancy Value Theory (SEVT) and Robert Lent and Steven Brown with Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT). Nonetheless, Central America remains an understudied region generally and even more so regarding these explanatory theories about student interest. This study sought to investigate this question at the high school level by conducting interviews and …

Human-Ai Collaboration In Writing: A Multidimensional Framework For Creative And Intellectual Authorship, James Hutson Feb 2025

Human-Ai Collaboration In Writing: A Multidimensional Framework For Creative And Intellectual Authorship, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

The integration of AI technologies into the writing process has significantly altered traditional notions of authorship, creativity, and intellectual labor. Historically, writing was seen as a human-driven cognitive and creative exercise, but with the rise of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude, the line between human and AI contributions has become increasingly ambiguous. This paper addresses the limitations of the current sliding scale model, which views AI involvement as ranging from “none” to “complete”. In its place, we propose a new multidimensional framework that more accurately reflects the complexity of human-AI collaboration in writing. The model includes axes …

Cultural Inclusion: Experiences Of Somali Parents In The Pbis System, Destiny R. Stampley Feb 2025

Cultural Inclusion: Experiences Of Somali Parents In The Pbis System, Destiny R. Stampley

Doctorate in Education

In an effort to support student achievement and decrease disruptive behaviors, many schools have implemented the Positive Behavior and Supports and Intervention (PBIS) framework. Two critical aspects of this framework are cultural inclusion and family engagement, which are used to promote equitable and responsive practices and policies. However, research on the effectiveness of PBIS in diverse schools focuses primarily on what schools do and fails to examine the perspective and experiences of parents. This is especially true for the Somali diaspora in Minnesota, the state with the largest Somali population in the United States. This qualitative study examined the experiences …

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Exposure to cross-cultural medical education is essential for professionals aiming to work in global health or serve diverse communities. However, traditional in-person exchange programs can be complex, costly, and restricted, particularly during times when travel is limited, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic. These challenges prompted us to explore novel approaches to support cross-cultural exchange programs. We designed, piloted, and evaluated a cross-cultural virtual exchange experience using case-based learning (CBL). Our study involved 14 bilingual medical students from the United States and Colombia who participated in four virtual CBL sessions. Following each session, participants engaged in guided discussions to reflect …

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

The United States is home to over a million former Soviet Union (FSU) immigrants, yet literature on their familial dynamics and mental health and well-being is scarce. Following Arksey and O’Malley’s framework, this scoping review synthesizes literature since 1990 about FSU immigrants’ acculturation and well-being across 10 databases. The scoping review included 39 studies. The selected articles revealed three themes: (a) maintaining cultural and ethnic identity across generations during acculturation, (b) generational differences in navigating acculturation challenges, and (c) mental health challenges among FSU immigrants. Differences in managing immigration and acculturation events were noted across generations and genders. FSU immigrants …

Journal of International Women's Studies

This study aims to explore the representation of flawed women characters in Studio Ghibli animated films, focusing on the themes of environmentalism, anti-war sentiments, and personal growth. Utilizing a qualitative approach and multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA), the research examines five selected films—Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away—with some additional attention to Howl’s Moving Castle. The analysis employs Fairclough’s three-dimensional model, visual grammar, and feminist film theory to scrutinize the visual and verbal elements used to represent these characters. The findings …

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this study was to explore multiple facets of young adolescent identity and related experiences through a scoping literature review. Based on Gardenswartz and Rowe’s Four Layers of Diversity Model, we specifically examined extant literature around five of the internal dimensions: gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and physical ability. Two overarching research questions guided this investigation: What is the range and nature of current findings on young adolescent identity and experience? What gaps exist in research on young adolescent identity and experiences? To address these research questions, our research group conducted a scoping literature review using predetermined search strings …

Becoming A Learner: An Autoethnography, Joshua Dickinson

Dissertations and Theses

It is well understood that attitudes toward language learning impact outcomes. This thesis uses autoethnography to explore the author's experiences learning German, in-class and independently, examining the interplay between motivation, attitudes, and the learning environment. I analyze personal journals and notes, employing graphic storytelling to illustrate their emotional journey. This paper draws upon existing literature on second language acquisition, particularly focusing on Dörnyei's L2 Motivational Self System and Ushioda's person-in-context approach. The study reveals how personal beliefs, self-doubt, and the limitations of traditional classroom settings impacted my motivation and ultimately, how reflection facilitated a renewed commitment to learning. In conclusion, …

Cultural Representations Of Obstetric Violence In Contemporary Italy, Veronica Frigeni Feb 2025

Cultural Representations Of Obstetric Violence In Contemporary Italy, Veronica Frigeni

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article is the first examination of a hybrid corpus of cultural narratives of obstetric violence in contemporary Italy. Adopting a reproductive justice approach, the paper considers obstetric violence as gendered, intersectional, and ontological violence against reproductive subjects over the course of their lived reproductive experiences. Combining personal and cultural narratives, the article examines the 2022 comic “Da Che Mondo È Mondo,” written by Irene Caselli and illustrated by Rita Petruccioli, Alberto Basaluzzo’s 2018 short film Si È Sempre Fatto così, and Antonella Lattanzi’s 2023 novel Cose Che Non Si Raccontano to assess how and to what extent they …

The Protection Of Spiritual Rights In The Sharia Banking Dispute Settlement: Overview Of The Sharia Banking Law In Indonesia, Amirizal Bustamin, Arini Azka Muthia, Sonia Ivana Barus

Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)

The status of Islamic banking in dispute settlement is normatively a positive legal subject to Islamic law principles. The Financial Services Authority confirms that many conflicts involve Islamic banks and their customers. The problem of the legal and economic context of Islamic banking is more complex, considering the operational concept of Islamic banks is different from conventional banking. Islamic banking must operate based on sharia, including in dispute resolution issues. Spiritual rights are one of the interests of Islamic banking customers that require attention. This study investigates the protection of spiritual rights in the sharia banking dispute settlement based on …

Wto Trade War Resolution For Japan's Chemical Export Restrictions To South Korea, Yordan Gunawan, M Fabian Akbar, Eva Ferrer Corral

Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)

The research analyses the trade war between South Korea and Japan from the perspective of international law. The trade war involving South Korea and Japan was triggered by a decision by the Supreme Court of South Korea which ordered several Japanese companies to pay compensation to victims of Japanese forced labor during World War II. As a result, on July 1, 2019, Japan imposed restrictions on chemical exports to South Korea. South Korea accused Japan of violating international trade regulations concerning export restrictions. Therefore, South Korea took action by boycotting goods from Japan. The two countries resolved to remove each …
