When Helping Hurts: Understanding Resource Recovery In Nonprofit Workplaces, Anna Laura Waldron
When Helping Hurts: Understanding Resource Recovery In Nonprofit Workplaces, Anna Laura Waldron
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The present study examined the relationship between recovery experiences and strain within the nonprofit context, and identified the role that work calling, boundary permeability, and relaxation remorse had on recovery and the relationship between recovery and strain. Participants (n = 124 nonprofit workers and volunteers) completed a web-based survey that included questions related to their work-nonwork roles, personal recovery activities, and dimensions of strain. Regression-based analyses indicated effects of recovery on some strain outcomes and the effects of calling, boundary permeability, and relaxation remorse on recovery. Psychological detachment was most frequently related to strain in these models. Results failed to …
Career And Technical Education Teacher Self-Efficacy Of Staff Development As Part Of A Beginning Teacher Induction Program: A Qualitative Research Of Cte Teacher Externs Of A South Texas School District…From The Classroom To The Job Site, And Back Again, Raul Alvarez Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Career and Technical Education (CTE) has proven itself through substantial research, to provide a positive impact on the U.S. economy and the job market in its college and career preparedness of high school students. However, the ability of school districts in retaining competent CTE teachers is not as reassuring. The progressive years for any beginning CTE teacher are during their initial tenure in the profession. Teacher self-knowledge is also developed during these years inclusive of the occupational reflection of either removing oneself from or continuing as a teacher. Therefore, it can be stated that it is during this period when …
Splitting Heirs: How Heirs' Property Continues The Legacy Of Challenges To The Accumulation Of Wealth For Black Americans, Ryan Cook
University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy
When people die without executing estate planning instruments, their real property is divided to their heirs as tenants in common. Property owned in this arrangement is called heirs’ property. The issues associated with heirs’ property are compounded when several generations pass without proper estate planning, and interest in the real property becomes highly fractionated. African Americans are more likely to die without wills, so the risks of heirs’ properties are disproportionally felt by people of color. One threat to heirs’ property arises when third parties buy out one heir’s share to force a partition sale. The Uniform Partition of Heirs …
Five Public Concerns Represented By Environmental Groups In The Development Of Regional Free Trade Agreements: A Case Study Of The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (Usmca), Julian Rodriguez
International Studies (MA) Theses
This thesis explores how the public discourse surrounding the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) negotiations affected the formulation of the free trade agreement (FTA). More specifically, the project set out to determine if North American environmental groups successfully had public concerns addressed and codified in the Environment chapter of the USMCA. By analyzing official statements made in press releases by seventeen prominent Environmental groups operating in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the thesis provides an account of the concerns related to liberalized regional trade prior to the USMCA’s ratification in 2020. The analysis of organization statements regarding public health, climate …

Improving Social Worker Engagement With Commercially Sexually Exploited Children, Kennisha Lesley
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This study used a survey to describe social workers’ most pertinent barriers to engaging Commercially Sexually Exploited Children (CSEC) and sought to identify the most effective practices currently used to improve engagement with this population. The purpose of the research was to assess social worker’s knowledge, preparedness, training, and most effective approaches to improve engagement. Data was collected from thirty participants. Findings were that social workers’ knowledge was relatively high, despite the expressed need for more thorough training to engage and help the population. Social workers provided insight on what interventions and approaches have been most effective when engaging with …
Systematic Literature Review: Culturally Appropriate Approach To Advance Care Planning For Ponca Tribe Elders, Priscila Soto Prado
Systematic Literature Review: Culturally Appropriate Approach To Advance Care Planning For Ponca Tribe Elders, Priscila Soto Prado
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Advance Care Planning is understudied in Native American and Alaskan Natives communities. There is a strong need for further research on culturally adapting advance care planning (ACP) for indigenous communities. Specifically, for the Ponca Tribe, culturally adapting the ACP used would ideally increase the acceptance of ACP in that community. This systematic literature resulted in identifying four themes other tribes have utilized to culturally adapt their ACP, advance directive, palliative and/or end-of-life processes in an effort to increase completion rates. The four themes were involving the elders with the adaptation process, increasing education efforts and awareness of ACP and ADs, …
From The Victims: A Needs Assessment And Training Program For Victim Advocates At The Monterey County District Attorney’S Office, Sophia Lopez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The lack of awareness of services and procedures of the criminal justice system causes victims of crime to not make reports to law enforcement. The Victims of Crime Unit in the District Attorney’s office provides support and services to victims in hopes to help reduce the trauma and insensitive treatment they may endure in Monterey County. The purpose of this project was to inform the creation of a training geared to increase awareness of the needs of victims of crime to the employees in the Victims of Crime Unit. The project consisted of a series of interviews with victims and …
Unmet Legal Needs As Health Injustice, Yael Cannon
Unmet Legal Needs As Health Injustice, Yael Cannon
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
In a seminal report in 2006, the American Bar Association recognized that millions of low-income Americans have civil legal issues that go unaddressed, jeopardizing their fundamental and basic human needs for shelter, sustenance, safety, family stability, and access to health care. The pandemic has only exacerbated this crisis. When rights in these areas go unenforced for Americans marginalized by poverty and race, their health can suffer, compounding health inequities. The fundamental civil legal needs of low-income Americans must be addressed in order to ensure health equity. This Article argues that unmet fundamental legal needs serve as determinants of health and …

Tobacco Farming, Addiction, Promotion Of Gender Equality, Well-Being And Monopoly Of The Indian Market, Ranjit Singha, Yogesh Kanna S
Journal of International Women's Studies
Women's land rights are still suppressed in India because men hold most of the land, and men decide what crops to grow. Tobacco use and farming are both detriments to one’s health. It causes cancer, and cancer treatment is unavailable in the majority of India's remote areas. On the other hand, tobacco is grown in remote regions of India, and cancer hospitals are concentrated in major cities. There are eight states in India's north-eastern region, but only one cancer treatment facility in Guwahati, Assam. There is a need for new cancer hospitals in the north-eastern part of the country, where …
Equitable Vaccine Access Within An Age-Based Framework, Alan B. Cobo-Lewis
Equitable Vaccine Access Within An Age-Based Framework, Alan B. Cobo-Lewis
Developmental Disabilities Network Journal
Objectives: When vaccine supply was limited, several states adopted age-based prioritization for Covid-19 vaccine eligibility because it is simple (especially when age is quantized by decade) and age is strongly associated with Covid-19 mortality. But this approach raises equity concerns based in law and ethics. I propose data-driven solutions for equitable policy within an age-based framework. Methods: Using CDC and Census Bureau data, I analyzed 538,627 U.S. Covid-19 deaths by age and race-ethnicity through February 2021 and compared the risk ratios to published data on risk ratios for other conditions. Results: Covid-19 mortality rose 2.56-fold per decade of life. Down …

"Freedmen Not Freemen": The Freedmen's Bureau And Black Land Ownership In Arkansas, Eric Johnson
Honors Theses
When slavery ended at the close of the Civil War, there was no universal answer for where former slaves were to live. The type and quality of freedom Black Southerners would experience during Reconstruction would be largely determined by where they lived. Many freedpeople and Republicans desired for widespread Black land ownership across the South. “Forty acres and a mule” was a common phrase that spread throughout the South and represented the hope that the United States government would ensure that all former slaves would be given land to own and live on. The Freedmen’s Bureau, which was created under …

This symposium will bring together scholars and advocates to discuss the history of cultural property, its rightful owners, and whether the property should be returned to its original creating country. Professor David Rudenstine will present his decades-long historical research challenging the British Museum’s claim in the cultural property dispute between Greece and Great Britain over the Parthenon Sculptures taken to London in the early 1800s by the British ambassador, Lord Elgin.
Practicing Self-Advocacy For Displaced People In The English Language Learner Classroom, Payton Persinger
Practicing Self-Advocacy For Displaced People In The English Language Learner Classroom, Payton Persinger
MA TESOL Collection
This study is comprised of a literature review of best practices for working with displaced people and interviews with teachers of refugees. The author found that self-advocacy is multifaceted and that promoting self-advocacy is a key way to support learners in advocating for themselves and their communities. As borders become less porous, there will be more refugee crises, and more language teachers will be needed. Best practices for teaching languages include seeing students as cultural experts, teaching and encouraging resistance, being a trauma-informed practitioner, teaching legal rights, and making room for students to choose what they learn.
Race, Masculinity, And Personality Development: Understanding The Black Male Experience In America, Veronica High
Race, Masculinity, And Personality Development: Understanding The Black Male Experience In America, Veronica High
Dissertations
Although men from all racial backgrounds have several poor health outcomes, most of the research suggests that Black men have even worse health outcomes compared to White men (Bowman, 1989; Watkins & Neighbors, 2007; Williams, 2003). The majority of published research on masculinity, however, has primarily focused on samples of White men. The issue of how racism intersects with masculinity and its impact on Black men remains understudied and is a current area of focus in the field. The present study examined relationships between Black men on the cultural measures of masculinity and self-esteem, Dark Triad (narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism), …
Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Arbitrators Under The Federal Arbitration Act?, Dimitrios Ioannidis
Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Arbitrators Under The Federal Arbitration Act?, Dimitrios Ioannidis
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
Can parties appoint an Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) platform to serve as an arbitrator under the Federal Arbitration Act (“FAA”)? Can a United States court invalidate an arbitration provision in a contract that specifies the resolution of a dispute through an AI platform? Can a U.S. court refuse to recognize an arbitral award that was rendered by an AI platform? Intense lobbying efforts by business organizations led to the enactment of the FAA in 1925. While the business community lobbied for lower-cost litigation, the lawyer organizations, including the American Bar Association, were bystanders in the drafting of the legislative proposals. Nearly …

Correlates Of Custodial Grandparents’ Perceived Barriers To The Use Of Services, Bert Hayslip, Julian Montoro-Rodriguez, Jennifer Ramsey
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
Getting timely access to help, information, and a variety of services is paramount among the challenges of raising a grandchild, and grandparents face a variety of internal and external barriers in getting such help. The present pilot exploratory study focused on caregiving-related and personal resource variables best associated with minority grandparent caregivers’ perceptions of barriers to receiving services. In contrast to previous work, the present study focused on African American and Latino grandparent caregivers. Fifty grandparents (M age = 58.59) of minority status (African American, Latino, Philippine) raising their grandchildren completed measures assessing caregiver strain, social support, resilience, self-care, …

Litigating Reproductive Rights: The Evolving Support Structure In The United States, Allison Anker
Litigating Reproductive Rights: The Evolving Support Structure In The United States, Allison Anker
Honors Theses
The Supreme Court of the United States functions as the highest judicial body in the country, with its decisions having the capability to reverberate change across the nation. Understanding why they make certain decisions has long been a point of scholarship, with multiple theories emerging as to what exactly influences their rulings. One such theory is the support structure, proposed by Charles Epp in The Rights Revolution (1998), which is a theory exploring how social movements influence litigation and the establishment of certain rights. This theory states that legal mobilization at the Supreme Court rests “on resources, and resources for …
