Stuart Scheingold's and Austin Sarat's "Something to Believe In: Politics, Professionalism, and Cause Lawyering," (Stanford University Press, December 2004) draws on a decade of empirical and theoretical work on cause lawyering. Scheingold’s and Sarat’s law and society scholarship contributes to our knowledge of lawyering, the law, work with clients and social movements, and the interplay between what Ewick and Silbey have called "legality" and the social world. Their cross-disciplinary work makes a significant contribution to the social sciences as well as to the field of legal studies. This review examines the utility of cause lawyering as a concept that contributes …

In the fall of 2002, several organizations in the fields of law and legal education jointly sponsored the Second Indiana Conclave on Legal Education.1 The purpose of the meeting was to assess the status of legal education in the State of Indiana, both in law school and beyond; identify goals that could guide the improvement of legal education; and map out means to achieve those goals. Within this general framework, the Conclave emphasized issues relating to core values of the profession; more particularly, instilling and supporting them in the face of great changes in the profession and society. "We know from experience that if former prisoners can’t find work, or a home, or help, they are much more likely to commit more crimes and return to prison…. America is the land of the second chance, and when the gates of the prison open, the path ahead should lead to a better life." – President George W. Bush, 2004

The Rationality Of Law Students' Career Choices, Aaron Haas
Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest
Two of the major problems confronting the legal profession today are increasing rates of job dissatisfaction and the persistent problem of encouraging lawyers to work in public interest settings. These two problems are actually connected in an important way. Researchers have found that lawyers earning the highest salaries, typically in large law firms, are also the most dissatisfied with their profession, while lawyers working for government agencies, public interest organizations, and educational institutions are among the most satisfied. In other words, encouraging more law students to enter public service law could address both the problem of unhappiness in the profession …

Free Legal Advice On The Internet, Peter B. Maggs
International Journal of Legal Information
On numerous online discussion forums in various countries, ordinary people pose specific legal questions and both ordinary people and lawyers answer them. This article considers this new and rapidly growing method of providing legal advice. It emphasizes qualitative over quantitative issues. It seeks to answer questions such as “What kind of questions are being asked?”; “What sort of people are giving legal advice?”, “What sort of people are getting legal advice?”. For those few legal systems that I know something about, I also have considered the question, “How good is the advice?” This is a comparative study, involving discussion forums …
