Entrepreneurial Expansion Plans: An Empirical Investigation Of Infrastructure Predictors, Jianwen (Jon) Liao, Harold P. Welsch, David Pistrui

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship and the development of new business continue to be the forefront of socioeconomic development in virtually all economies today. Despite evidence of increasing research into entrepreneurial growth, the existing research is limited by the fact that most studies define entrepreneurial growth as a unidimensional construct and operationalize it as “realized” growth relying on financially based measures. Consequently, this article has two objectives: (1) to develop a set of accurate and comprehensive entrepreneurial growth measures; and (2) to test a series of hypotheses regarding precursors of growth intentions—more specifically, to what extent, infrastructure factors affect entrepreneurial growth intentions. These two …

Welcome To The Class Of 2012, David Getches Jan 2009

Welcome To The Class Of 2012, David Getches

Speeches

Summary by Jane Thompson: This is one of the longest speeches of David Getches available in the archives. It is a richer version of his student welcomes in 2010 and 2011. He starts by sharing interesting facts about the entering class, but he concludes by talking about the legal profession and its ideals. The "timeless values" he extols are: integrity, service, equal access to justice, and the rule of law. Regarding the latter, he reminds the listener that the struggle for the rule of law is not limited to developing countries, and he goes on to talk about torture, preventive …

Attorney-Client Fee Agreements That Offend Public Policy, Alex B. Long Jan 2009

Attorney-Client Fee Agreements That Offend Public Policy, Alex B. Long

Scholarly Works

Under traditional contract law principles, an agreement may be deemed unenforceable because it so clearly offends established public policy that recovery under the contract is inappropriate. In such cases, there has traditionally been a presumption against permitting the offending party to recover, either under the contract or in quantum meruit. Yet, the legal profession (through the Restatement of the Law Governing Lawyers) and the courts (through their decisions) have effectively reversed that presumption and have announced a general rule in favor of permitting lawyers to recover fees even when their fee agreements clearly offend well-established and strong public policy. Moreover, …

Occupational Health And Safety Status Of Indigenous And Latino Farmworkers In Oregon, Stephanie Farquhar, Nancy M. Goff, Nargess Shadbeh, Julie Samples, Santiago Ventura, Valentin Sanchez, Pamela Rao, Shelley Davis

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Exposure to pesticides poses great risk to agricultural workers and their families. Of the approximately 174,000 agricultural workers in Oregon, studies estimate that up to 40% of the workers in Oregon are indigenous and may be particularly vulnerable to the health risks of working in pesticide treated areas. Surveys conducted with Oregon farmworkers suggest that Latino and indigenous farmworkers differ demographically and may have diverse occupational and health needs. All Latino workers reported Spanish as their native language, while indigenous workers spoke several different native languages. Latino workers were employed mostly in orchards (28%) and nurseries (24%), while indigenous workers …
