Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd) And The Criminal Justice System: An Introduction For Professionals, Jerrod Brown, Barbara Luskin, Bethany Hastings
Forensic Scholars Today
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the fastest growing developmental disability in the United States. Emerging in early childhood, ASD is characterized by deficits in communication, social interaction, and behavior. As its name suggests, ASD encompasses a broad number of symptoms, deficits, and degrees of severity, and although the majority of individuals with ASD will not become involved in the criminal justice system, the symptoms of ASD can have a debilitating effect in this setting. The familiarization of criminal justice professionals with ASD has the potential to improve short- and long-term outcomes for individuals diagnosed with this disorder.

All Decisions
The landlord initiated a holdover proceeding against the tenant, claiming that the tenant's license to occupy the apartment had terminated upon the death of the tenant of record. The tenant defended the proceeding by asserting that she was entitled to succeed to the tenancy pursuant to the Rent Stabilization Code. The court denied the landlord's motion for partial summary judgment, finding that the tenant's right to succeed to the tenancy was not extinguished by the terms of a prior stipulation and was protected by the Rent Stabilization Law and Code.

Eviction In Oregon's Subsidized Affordable Housing, Yi Wang, Lisa K. Bates, Azad Amir-Ghassemi, Minji Cho, Marisa Zapata, Jacen Greene, Colleen Carroll, Devin Macarthur
Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports
Despite Oregon's expanded investments in affordable housing development and eviction prevention, over 5,400 eviction cases were filed in the state’s subsidized housing from January 2019 to December 2023. This report maps out the landscape of subsidized housing eviction in Oregon and brings attention to the high share of eviction judgments in subsidized eviction cases, the disproportionate rate of eviction filings from housing-authority-contracted management companies and nonprofit housing providers, and the great disparities in legal representation between landlords and tenants.
Vulnerable Consumers Left Behind In The Overdraft Fee Saga, Mary Claire Griffith-Mccrery
Vulnerable Consumers Left Behind In The Overdraft Fee Saga, Mary Claire Griffith-Mccrery
Marquette Benefits and Social Welfare Law Review
Attention on the arguable pervasiveness of overdraft fees has
been increasing in recent years. Overdraft programs were originally
offered to banks’ trusted, high-dollar customers on a discretionary
basis. Technology brought about debit cards and electronic payment
methods along with direct deposit and enhanced the complexity of
processing transactions. Some practices increased the likelihood of
overdrafts. For example, reordering transactions such that they post
to the account from the largest to smallest dollar amount received
distinct scrutiny—and is discouraged by regulators. Today, the majority
of overdraft fees are paid by economically disadvantaged, vulnerable
consumers; more specifically, by Black and Hispanic consumers. …

Digital Environments Of Reception And Governance: A Landscape Analysis Of Immigration-Related Webpages On U.S. State Websites, Orunima Chakraborti
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
American state governments occupy unique political roles when it comes to critical public-facing policy areas like education, health, transportation, and commerce, and therefore they administer many public services and benefits that affect immigrants and their communities. This study expands the existing knowledge of the ways in which U.S. state governments digitally engage with their immigrant populations, doing so through a landscape analysis that maps the information and resources provided for and about immigrant communities on 413 immigration-related webpages across all 50 U.S. state governments’ official websites. Data was collected in four categories for each webpage: its bureaucratic orientation, the government …
Ordinary Care: Affective Politics Of Migration And The Everyday Lives Of Syrian Refugees In Istanbul, Yasemin Ozer
Ordinary Care: Affective Politics Of Migration And The Everyday Lives Of Syrian Refugees In Istanbul, Yasemin Ozer
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation makes two significant interventions into the literature on Syrian refugees in Turkey and the anthropology of migration and refugee studies more broadly. First, it focuses on the everyday lives of working-class urban refugees and argues that “ordinary care” is a crucial means by which they build sustainable and dignified lives while living in precarity in an often hostile environment in the aftermath of war and displacement. Ordinary care, as I theorize in this ethnography, includes sharing of resources, information, and advice as well as the formation of mutual relationships between kin, neighbors, and friends. Compared to the more …

Broken Trust - A $500,000 Lesson In How Banks As Trustees Fail Beneficiaries While Enriching Themselves And While Regulators Ignore The Abuse, Bruce Cahan
Journal of International Business and Law
U.S. households own or control USD $140 trillion (TN).1 Their financial assets under management (AUM) are being managed today through the complex circuitry of global financial markets. Real estate, art and other assets also are being managed. For estate and wealth management planning, for security of long-term asset appreciation and asset protection against bankruptcy, divorce, death, incapacity and exposure of assets to litigation risks, lawyers recommend establishing trusts and rely on the professional expertise, responsibility and ethical clarity of corporate trustees. In the U.S., private trusts typically are formed pursuant to the trust codes of the various states, often modeled …

From Margins To Center: Elevating The Voices Of Disadvantaged Families In Child Welfare, Jerron R. Wheeler
Marquette Benefits and Social Welfare Law Review
This essay sheds light on the systemic challenges faced by indigent,
minority families within the child welfare system, using personal experiences
from my time as a student at the University of Florida
Levin College of Law as a lens. This essay aims to highlight the intersection
of poverty, race, and the child welfare system, showing
how these factors can hinder parents' ability to reunite with their
children despite their best efforts. The essay seeks to underscore the
urgent need for a more nuanced, multidisciplinary approach to child
welfare advocacy that includes legal professionals, social workers,
and health professionals working collaboratively …
Measures Of Justice: Researching And Evaluating Lay Legal Assistance Programs, Tanina Rostain, James Teufel
Measures Of Justice: Researching And Evaluating Lay Legal Assistance Programs, Tanina Rostain, James Teufel
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
In recent years a national movement to train lay advocates and advisors to assist people with their common justice problems has emerged in the United States. A host of new programs have launched that allow trained navigators and justice workers to provide legal assistance. These programs – developed in Alaska, Delaware, South Carolina, Arizona, and Utah, among other places – vary in their substantive focus, the skills they impart, and their approaches to reaching the people and communities they seek to help. The proliferation of lay legal assistance programs creates research imperatives and opportunities. These programs need to be assessed …

When E And G Disagree: Esg Scores Between Hedonic And Utilitarian Firms, Timothy Loomas
When E And G Disagree: Esg Scores Between Hedonic And Utilitarian Firms, Timothy Loomas
Executive DBA Dissertations
How do Environmental (E), Social (S), and Governance (G) scores vary when examined under a hedonic-utilitarian lens? The happiness and guilt associated with hedonic (pleasure oriented) products have been shown to increase altruism and prosocial behavior as compared to utilitarian (need oriented) products. Based on this we examine whether Social- and Environmental-pillar scores for firms associated with hedonic products and/or services will be greater than for firms associated with utilitarian products and/or services. To test these hypotheses, data from the Thompson-Refinitiv ESG database were used to compare the ESG pillar scores between hedonic and utilitarian firms. The research finds higher …

Mental Health Screening In Lawyer Licensing, Grahm Ambrose, Brianne Holland-Sergar, Nora Freeman Engstrom
Mental Health Screening In Lawyer Licensing, Grahm Ambrose, Brianne Holland-Sergar, Nora Freeman Engstrom
Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings
This report examines the role of mental health screening in lawyer licensing, focusing on its evolution, current practices, and criticisms. It highlights concerns that such screening may discourage treatment, perpetuate stigma, and lack empirical support for improving public protection. While many states have shifted from broad inquiries into diagnoses and treatment history toward narrower questions about conduct or impairment, most still retain some form of screening. The report also reviews legal, ethical, and practical challenges, including potential conflicts with disability law. Overall, it concludes that although reforms have reduced intrusiveness, significant debate remains about the necessity and effectiveness of mental …
