The Collaborative Effect Of Ceo-Cfo Power Differentials: What Is The Impact On Performance?, Derek Wayne Henrichs Jan 2025

The Collaborative Effect Of Ceo-Cfo Power Differentials: What Is The Impact On Performance?, Derek Wayne Henrichs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Survey evidence shows that in the 21st century the CFO’s power has been increasing more than any other executive position. Yet, an understanding of how this increasingly powerful executive interacts with CEO power is not fully understood. This study examines the collaborative effect of power dynamics in the CEO-CFO relationship and how that influences firm performance. I capture executive power by combining two data sets to examine three dimensions of an executive’s power: structural, individual, and social. I predict and find that certain aspects of executive power impact firm performance differently and measure this by changes in profitability. Furthermore, I …

Leveraging Data Science For Resilience: Improving Trauma-Informed Care Practice For Adverse Childhood Experience With Ai & Data Science Application, Mohmmad Arif Shaik

Master's Theses

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have long-lasting effects on physical health, mental well-being, education, and socioeconomic outcomes. Resilient Georgia (RG), a statewide initiative, seeks to address ACEs through trauma-informed care and data-driven strategies. However, challenges in data collection, analysis, and tracking set back the effectiveness of these efforts. This study explores the role of data science and interactive visualization tools in improving outcomes for individuals and communities affected by ACEs. A key focus of this research is the development of a data science management application designed to enhance data collection and improve real-time decision-making. The application features interactive dashboards that allow …

Rethinking Mandatory State Bars, Leslie C. Levin Jan 2025

Rethinking Mandatory State Bars, Leslie C. Levin

Faculty Articles and Papers

Mandatory state bars were originally established to better regulate lawyers, advance the profession's interests, and protect the public. Today, however, renewed uncertainty about their constitutionality and questions about what these bars can do and say has led to a spate of litigation against them. This is therefore a good time to rethink the wisdom of maintaining these bars. The Article first describes the unsettled state of the law. It then notes that due to the constraints courts have placed on mandatory bars, some cannot perform traditional bar functions, such as proposing improvements in the substantive law. These bars cannot defend …

Space For The Departed: Burial, Land Scarcity, And Bone-Ash Apartments In China, Xinyi Wu Jan 2025

Space For The Departed: Burial, Land Scarcity, And Bone-Ash Apartments In China, Xinyi Wu

Pitzer Senior Theses

The rise of bone ash apartments in China reflects a layered response to urban land scarcity, shifting funeral policies, and real estate speculation. As the state mandates cremation and restricts private cemetery development, traditional burial customs are increasingly reshaped by spatial limitations, economic pressures, and political regulation.

For some families, bone ash apartments function as modern ancestral halls—domestic spaces for remembrance and ritual continuity. For others, they represent a pragmatic investment strategy, offering long-term storage of ashes within assets that retain market value.

This thesis examines how urban planning, state funeral policy, real estate dynamics, and the disintegration of neighborhood …

Preparing Students For The Artificial Intelligence Era: The Crucial Role Of Critical Thinking Skills, Samantha A. Moppett Jan 2025

Preparing Students For The Artificial Intelligence Era: The Crucial Role Of Critical Thinking Skills, Samantha A. Moppett

Mitchell Hamline Law Review

As artificial intelligence transforms the legal profession, the role of critical thinking skills among legal professionals becomes increasingly vital. This Essay argues that while AI will automate many routine le-gal tasks, successful legal practice in the AI era will require lawyers to possess robust critical thinking abilities to effectively evaluate AI out-puts, develop strategic solutions, and handle complex analytical work that AI cannot replicate. However, at this crucial juncture, evidence suggests a significant deficit in critical thinking skills among incoming law students. This deficit poses particular challenges as the legal profes-sion increasingly integrates generative AI tools that can handle routine …

Rct Pre-Post Training Analysis Of The Vipcorps Maternal Mortality Prevention Course With A Focus On Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv), Rose A. Wood

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Maternal mortality rates rob families across the U.S. of a mother figure, and each death is preventable. The U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate of high-earning countries. This study assesses the effects of the VIPCorps program, a course on the top 3 risk factors of maternal mortality, on improving knowledge and attitudes towards victims of IPV. Students in helping professions at the University of Kentucky (n = 223) were recruited via on campus advertising and remotely allocated to either the VIPCorps program or a mock maternal mortality training control. Generalized linear modeling was used to estimate the difference in …

A Holistic Program Manual For Permanent Supportive Housing: Integrating Housing First And Occupational Therapy Approaches, Melody Mackenzie Jan 2025

A Holistic Program Manual For Permanent Supportive Housing: Integrating Housing First And Occupational Therapy Approaches, Melody Mackenzie

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Background: Individuals experiencing chronic homelessness often face complex challenges including trauma, mental health conditions, and barriers to daily living. While permanent supportive housing provides long-term housing with supportive services, gaps exist in resources tailored for both residents and residential support staff. Many existing permanent supportive housing programs emphasize behavioral or mental health approaches, with fewer addressing the full range of occupational participation needs. Occupational therapy, with its holistic and client-centered perspective, offers a valuable lens to enhance service delivery in permanent supportive housing.

Purpose: The purpose of this scholarly project was to develop two compatible tools–a Permanent Supportive Housing Residential …

The Effectiveness Of The Hague Convention In Addressing International Child Abduction, Areej A. Dakelallah Althubiti

Theses and Dissertations

Parental child abduction is a growing concern fueled by immigration, cross-cultural marriages, evolving family dynamics, and gaps in the implementation and enforcement of developed international frameworks. This study examines the effectiveness of and challenges to the enforcement of the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction (HCCA), which was developed to address this problem. Specifically, the goal of this research is to assess the effect the HCCA has had on parental kidnapping, analyze its effectiveness in resolving international custody disputes, and identify the legal and practical obstacles that inhibit implementation. While the prevalence of parental kidnapping continues …

Fighting The Hypothetical: Why Law Firms Should Rethink The Billable Hour In The Generative Ai Era, Nancy B. Rapoport, Joseph R. Tiano Jr. Jan 2025

Fighting The Hypothetical: Why Law Firms Should Rethink The Billable Hour In The Generative Ai Era, Nancy B. Rapoport, Joseph R. Tiano Jr.

Scholarly Works

“Fighting the Hypothetical: Why Law Firms Should Rethink the Billable Hour in the Generative AI Era” analyzes how the emergence and adoption of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) will fundamentally disrupt the traditional billable hour model that has dominated the industry since the 1960s. Professor Rapoport and Mr. Tiano contend that GenAI’s ability to perform routine legal tasks quickly and accurately will force law firms to shift away from billing structures based primarily on time spent (or inputs) and toward models that better reflect client value (or outputs).

The authors interviewed law firm leaders to gain an “in the trenches” view …

Interoperable Legal Ai For Access To Justice, Drew Simshaw Jan 2025

Interoperable Legal Ai For Access To Justice, Drew Simshaw

Scholarly Works

The access-to-justice gap is growing, affecting individuals with both civil and criminal needs in the United States. Though these challenges are multifaceted, procedural barriers in the U.S. legal system can often inhibit access-to-justice efforts. The resulting inequities undermine fairness for those interacting with courts and jeopardize the legitimacy of the broader legal system. Legal technology driven by artificial intelligence (Al) has been heralded for its potential to combat these challenges on three access-to-justice fronts that are often conceptualized in isolation: a consumer (i.e., self-help) front, a legal-service-provider front, and a court front. Progress on each of these fronts is apparent, …

ENGS 89/90 Reports

This research project investigates the improvement of mortar strength by incorporating metal fiber additives, to develop a high-performance mortar for construction applications where traditional concrete with coarse aggregates is not viable. Sponsored by Creare LLC who have received a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the U.S. Department of Defense, the upper limits of metal fiber loading in mortar are explored to achieve compressive and flexural strengths that are similar to traditional concrete. The study uses a design of experiments: varying fiber type and concentration to determine the impact on mechanical properties, including compressive and flexural strength while maintaining …

This article recommends the development and deployment of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) large language model (LLM) tool by and for the federal judiciary. LLMs are revolutionizing legal practice, and judges should accordingly be familiar and in regular practice with LLM technology. LLMs can greatly assist the courts by increasing operational efficiency and public access to justice. Particularly, LLMs can improve efficiency in legal research, legal writing, and administration. LLMs present limitations or potential problems in the form of prompt dependency and harmful bias, limitations of data in their training sets, privacy and confidentiality, and the production of false or fabricated …

Navigating The Endemic Era: Understanding The Carry-On Forces That Influence Business Travel Decisions, Cheuk Ki, Eliver Lin

Department of Hospitality and Business Management

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected global trade, including business travel, despite its importance in promoting economic growth and innovation. This study investigated the factors that motivate companies and organisations to engage in business travel during the pandemic era, using data from 1948 decision-makers in the Asia Pacific region. The results showed that the significance of the trip and the demand of clients were critical influencers of business travel decisions. These findings address the research gap in explaining organisational travel decisions and behaviours and can help stakeholders in the aviation, hospitality, and tourism industries develop effective strategies to attract business …
