Survival Guide For Queer Families In Heteronormative Healthcare: Liberatory Consciousness And The Paradox Of Dependent Healthcare, A Critical Policy Discourse Analysis, Dwenna A. Holden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study I explored and analyzed how the queer experiences of an anonymous higher education institution in the western United States’ self-identified queer faculty and staff intersected with the discursive framing of the college’s dependent healthcare structure and documents. Within a critical paradigm I designed research around a high-density theoretical approach to weaving various branches of queer theory together with critical theory around policy and law in relation to queer bodies and hostile heteronormative policy environments. I arrived at solutions based in complaint, survival, and transformation. I used critical policy discourse analyses to interrogate the college’s dependent healthcare documents …

Online Hyperparameter Tuning For Llm Optimization, Ethan Lin, Nathan Yu, Jeromy Chang
Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses
Large Language Models (LLMs) are becoming increasingly popular in modern society. However, despite their popularity, the deployment of LLMs in real-world scenarios is extremely challenging due to substantial computational costs and memory constraints. Edge devices, like smartphones and IoT devices, lack resources needed to run these models locally, instead offloading computations for cloud computing. Cloud computing requires users to send their data over the internet leading to numerous privacy and security concerns. In some domains, such as health and finances, sending such sensitive information is not an option. Existing solutions to compress or increase inference speed include Small Language Models …
Nonprofit Marketing Strategies To Target A Specific Client Population, Daniel Curtis Grant
Nonprofit Marketing Strategies To Target A Specific Client Population, Daniel Curtis Grant
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African American females are the fastest-growing demographic in the United States contracting HIV. Nonprofit executives are concerned that, without effective marketing campaigns, African American females are not seeking the education or testing proven to reduce the chance of contracting HIV. Grounded in the integrated marketing communications theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore strategies that nonprofit executives use to design and execute effective marketing campaigns targeted to a specific client population. The participants were four senior leaders from a nonprofit healthcare clinic located in the south-central Region of the United States who have 10 or …
Georgia Has A New Habitability Protection For Tenants, But What Does It Mean?, Elizabeth Grant, Gordon Wayne
Georgia Has A New Habitability Protection For Tenants, But What Does It Mean?, Elizabeth Grant, Gordon Wayne
Scholarly Works
Georgia’s Safe at Home Act became law on July 1, 2024, and established the standard that residential premises be “fit for human habitation.” The Act strengthens tenant protections by targeting severe housing issues affecting 15% of Georgia households, particularly Black and rural communities. It adds cooling as an essential utility, caps security deposits, and mandates a three-day notice to pay before eviction filings. However, the undefined “fit for human habitation” term awaits judicial interpretation, complicated by limited legal access and rare appellate precedent. Though a key step forward, this brief Comment suggests that additional measures are needed to secure tenants’ …
Competition In The Global Law Market: Offshore Development Of The Statutory "Rule In Hastings-Bass", Andrew P. Morriss
Competition In The Global Law Market: Offshore Development Of The Statutory "Rule In Hastings-Bass", Andrew P. Morriss
Minnesota Journal of International Law, Vols. 28:2 onward (2019-present)
This Article examines the competitive dynamics in the global law market through the lens of the statutory evolution of the Rule in Hastings-Bass across various International Financial Centers (IFCs). Following the UK Supreme Court’s 2013 decision in Pitt v Holt and Futter v Futter, which significantly restricted the judiciary’s ability to void trustee decisions under the Rule, seven IFCs (Jersey, Bermuda, The Bahamas, the Dubai International Financial Center, the Cayman Islands, and the British Virgin Islands) enacted statutes to preserve and clarify the Rule within their jurisdictions. These legislative actions highlight the strategic adaptations by IFCs to enhance their legal …

In this nonpayment proceeding, the court affirmed the dismissal of the petition, granting the tenant's motion for summary judgment. The tenant successfully used Multiple Dwelling Law § 302-a as an affirmative defense, proving that the landlord failed to correct rent-impairing violations in the building's public areas for over six months. The court rejected the landlord's argument of lack of access, as the violations were not within the tenant's apartment. It also dismissed the landlord's claim that the tenant failed to certify the uncorrected violations, noting that the landlord's own failure to file a certification of compliance established a prima facie …

Democratic Lawyering: Upending The “Hidden Curriculum” To Prepare New Lawyers For A New World, Eduardo R.C. Capulong, Andrew King-Ries, Monte Mills
The Journal of Law Teaching and Learning
Multiple heightening crises reveal the deficiencies and contradictions of legal education, in particular the values it imparts. Perpetuating myths about U.S. democracy and rule of law, the enduring formalist, liberal legalist cast of law school is increasingly at odds with students’ lived experiences. As liberal democracy and the rule of law falter, no longer is relying on the “hidden curriculum” or the historically nebulous and mythical narratives of the law and our legal system sufficient to prepare tomorrow’s lawyers for the challenges faced by our profession. Instead, with a boost from ABA Standard 303, this article draws on the tradition …

California Prison Reentry Service Providers’ Views On Rehabilitation And Its Impact On Recidivism, Kimberly A. Clisbee
California Prison Reentry Service Providers’ Views On Rehabilitation And Its Impact On Recidivism, Kimberly A. Clisbee
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative review used a convergent-parallel design to explore the perspectives of prison administrators and nonprofit reentry program providers regarding inmate rehabilitation iii and reentry services. In 2021, 76,000 inmates were pardoned due to changes in California legislation (Fritz, 2024, p. 1 ). According to a 2024 report, 89,898 inmates are residing in California State prisons- 119% over capacity (Morris, 2024, p. 1 ). This study investigated two key aspects: (1) What rehabilitation and reintegration services are offered to inmates in the California State prison system, and are these services provided upon release? 2. Are inmates required to participate in …

The court dismissed the landlord's holdover petition, granting the tenant's motion to dismiss. The court found the petition fatally defective for failing to plead the tenant's protected status as a non-purchasing tenant under the Martin Act. Additionally, the predicate 90-day notice was deemed insufficient as it vaguely alleged a "poor history of making rent payments on time" without specific details, failing to establish "good cause" for eviction required by the Martin Act. The court denied the landlord's cross-motion to amend and the tenant's summary judgment motion as moot.

The court granted the tenant's motion to dismiss the nonpayment petition, finding the rent demand defective due to the inclusion of substantial lump-sum charges lacking specific periods of accrual. While the court noted that fees and non-rent charges are permissible in co-op nonpayment cases if allowed by the proprietary lease, the large "Prior Agent" lump sums for maintenance, assessment, and parking rendered the demand insufficient to "fairly appraise" the tenant of the arrears, thus undermining the proceeding. The dismissal was without prejudice.

All Decisions
The court partially granted the landlord's motion to amend the petition to include GCEL applicability and good cause grounds, and partially granted the tenant's motion to amend her answer. It denied the tenant's motion to dismiss outright. While the initial predicate notice served before GCEL's enactment was valid, the petition filed afterward needed to conform. The court allowed the landlord to proceed on the **non-payment of rent** ground, finding it sufficiently pleaded with specific amounts and dates, but dismissed the **nuisance** and **illegal sublet** grounds due to lack of factual specificity in the petition.

Benefits And Challenges Of Collaborative Networks Addressing Food System Disruptions During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Dikshya Dahal, Tania Schusler
School of Environmental Sustainability: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted food systems with disproportionate impacts on marginalized social groups, which in the USA included racial and ethnic minorities, working class families, immigrants, seniors, and people with disabilities, among others. The pandemic also greatly affected the operations of nonprofit organizations, which play important roles in disaster response. We explored how social networks supported non-profit organizations’ efforts to address increased food insecurity and food-related business disruptions during the pandemic in the Chicago region, IL, USA. We used mixed methods including a Social Network Analysis (SNA) of 48 organizations and their reported partners plus focus group discussions with representatives …

Landlords challenged New York's Vacancy Provisions, alleging Fourth Amendment violations for warrantless searches of rent rolls and Fourteenth Amendment due process violations concerning vacancy calculations. The court affirmed dismissal, holding that Article 78 proceedings provide sufficient pre-compliance review for record demands, and the low risk of coercion mitigates Fourth Amendment concerns. Due process was satisfied by opportunities for landlords to contest vacancy calculations through public hearings and subsequent Article 78 review, ensuring constitutional muster.

This article synthesizes the views of legal scholars examining how generative artificial intelligence (AI) is affecting legal and dispute resolution practice, education, and scholarship. They share a perspective of responsible realism – recognizing both the promise and the perils of AI. It is already reshaping how lawyers, neutrals, educators, students, and scholars work – and its influence will only grow.
The scholars identify clear benefits: broader access, greater efficiency, and new support for professional learning. They also warn of serious risks, including bias, deskilling, and erosion of judgment. Avoiding both hype and panic, they analyze developments, offer realistic strategies, and …
Culturally Responsive Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv) Service Needs Among African Immigrant Women: Examining The Impact Of Cultural Norms And Psychosocial Barriers On Safety Perceptions And Help-Seeking Behaviors, Titilayo Ogunbambi
Dissertations
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) remains a pervasive public health and social justice issue globally, with African immigrant women in the United States facing compounded challenges as they navigate cultural, structural, and systemic barriers, including migration-related vulnerabilities and attachment to cultural values that shape their decisions and experiences. Although formal IPV services exist, they often fail to address the lived realities and culturally specific needs of this population, leading to underutilization and barriers in seeking help. This qualitative study examines how cultural norms, psychosocial barriers, and systemic inequities influence safety perceptions and help-seeking behaviors among African immigrant women survivors of IPV. …

Blueprint For A Youth Violence Intervention Program In East Baton Rouge Parish: Adapting Hospital-Based Strategies, Kristina G. Little, Elizabeth Winchester, Judith L F Rhodes
Reports
Youth violence in East Baton Rouge Parish remains a persistent public safety and public health challenge. This report proposes an adapted, evidence-informed model for East Baton Rouge Parish that retains the core components of traditional HVIPs while leveraging existing legal, hospital, and social service resources. The model is grounded in a public health framework and emphasizes trauma-informed, bedside intervention at the “teachable moment” when youth are most receptive to change, and long-term wraparound case management. The report concludes with recommendations for implementing this adapted approach, including identifying a health system champion, building referral protocols, embedding training, and developing a long-term …

Between The Sword And A Hard Place: Systemic Solutions To The Shortcomings Of The Missouri Public Defender System, Andrew A. Bohon
Missouri Law Review
“Striving to better, oft we mar what’s well.” The attempt to solve a problem can sometimes topple a functional system entirely. The striving to improve a thing can frustrate its purpose. Limping along under the guise of functionality, however, many sociopolitical processes hinder our progress. Something works, so we cling to it in fear of making it worse. The idea has been aphorized that perfect is the enemy of good. Although a quaint and conservative philosophy, there is a countertheory: “Good is the enemy of great.”

In this Essay, we explore the possibilities for putting AI technology in the hands of clients themselves, considering the advantages and disadvantages. Thinking about the specific context of immigration law, we could envision apps that help individuals to prepare for interviews for affirmative asylum, visas, or naturalization; to educate them about their rights in ways that are more specific, timely, and convenient than current know-your-rights formats; or, in a more attorney-adjacent interaction, using an app to conduct the initial intake interview and organize that information, making the usual time-consuming intake process more efficient and effective. We are not envisioning apps …
