White Gloves Sessions: Towson University Raises Awareness About Unique Collection, Nadia Nasr, Joyce Garczynski

Staff publications, research, and presentations

Imagine this: You’re two years into your first job as an archivist and just as you’re moving into your institution’s recently renovated facilities, you receive a gem of a collection: nearly three thousand volumes of rare Judaica books dating from the fifteenth through twentieth centuries. Only half the collection is cataloged and most of the material is printed in languages other than English, including Hebrew, German, Russian, Polish, French, Latin, and Yiddish. Much of it is in need of conservation work, but you don’t have an in-house lab and would need funding to outsource the work. You immediately recognize the …

As the Nebraska Hall of Fame Commission noted, Johnson "gained national and international recognition as an economist, educator, humanitarian, social activist, writer and editor."79 Moreover, Johnson helped to save numerous Central European scholars - many of whom were Jewish or considered to be Jewish - from Nazi persecution. In addition to his academic writing, Johnson helped to author the nation's first nondiscrimination legislation and wrote two novels, three collections of short stories, and an autobiography. He received honorary doctorates from the New School for Social Research, the University of Nebraska, Brandeis University, Hebrew Union College, Yeshiva University, and the universities …

Eruv, Eryn Green

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Eruv is a collection of poems exploring the interstices between the Judaic concept of Eruvin and the poetic traditions of dictation, field and personist poetics. The poems that represent the body of this work are explorations of the ways in which poetry empties and fills a space, and what might be implied for our shared conceptions of ‘Home’ and ‘Self’ by these tendencies.

Where Shall Wisdom Be Found?, Zina Petersen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Mormons who know about her are usually fans of Margaret Barker. Disclosure: I am one of them (Mormon who knows about her, and fan). For further disclosure, she paid attention and respect to the writings of Hugh Nibley, to whom I was and am filially devoted. So it isn’t as if I am unbiased in appreciating Barker’s work. I am also not alone; there are quite a few of us who read and love her. Indeed it may be said we love her because she first loved us—or at least unwittingly agreed with us. With her 2012 book, The Mother …

Response To Zadoff On Kwall, Roberta Rosenthal Kwall

Cardozo Law Review de•novo

In The Cultural Analysis Paradigm: Women and Synagogue Ritual as a Case Study, I demonstrate that a cultural analysis of halakhah views the norms of female ritualistic participation concerning being called to, and reading from the Torah as the result of environment, conditioning, history, and context, rather than as an unalterable mandate. To my knowledge, the idea that halakhah should be understood through a cultural analysis lens has not previously been explored in either the legal or Jewish studies literature. The paradigm developed in the Article was based on an extensive review of the cultural analysis literature and represents …

A Sign Of The Times: Contemporary American Post-Holocaust Imagery And Post-Jewish Identity, Stacy Rebecca Schwartz Jan 2013

A Sign Of The Times: Contemporary American Post-Holocaust Imagery And Post-Jewish Identity, Stacy Rebecca Schwartz

Master's Theses

The construction of American Jewish identity has historically balanced efforts to reconcile acceptance into majority culture with maintaining traditional Jewish heritage. Expression of Jewish identity in a "diasporic community" has often been anchored in communal rituals and sociopolitical events, especially the Holocaust, uniting an increasingly diverse community. Beginning in the late twentieth century, the figure of the "post-Jew" and post-Jewish identity emerged alongside pluralist multiculturalism as an alternate identity framework recognizing the hybrid character of Jewish American identity as a combination of inherited and selected elements.

This thesis examines the manifestation of post-Jewish identity in artistic responses to the Holocaust …

Factors Affecting Student Retention At One Independent School In The Southwest, Dan R. Ahlstrom Jan 2013

Factors Affecting Student Retention At One Independent School In The Southwest, Dan R. Ahlstrom

Theses and Dissertations

This mixed-methods case study determined the factors and examined the issues associated with student retention at a faith-based independent day school in southwestern United States of America. The data included online surveys, personal interviews, collection of archival information, and the researcher's extensive field notes. Surveys (530) were distributed to the board of trustees, administration, faculty, parents, and other stakeholders. Current parents responded to the survey at 71.5%, faculty responded at 47.8%, and board members responded, at 27%. Therefore, parents comprised the largest percentage of respondents by constituency to the survey. To gather more in-depth perceptions, 21 personal interviewees were purposely …

The Cultural Analysis Paradigm: Women And Synagogue Ritual As A Case Study, Roberta Rosenthal Kwall Dec 2012

The Cultural Analysis Paradigm: Women And Synagogue Ritual As A Case Study, Roberta Rosenthal Kwall

Cardozo Law Review

This Article develops an original cultural analysis paradigm with significant implications for understanding the relationship between law and culture. It also illustrates how this relationship should inform the normative application of areas of law in which tensions exist between modern sensibilities and traditional practices steeped in cultural perspectives from other times. Indeed, the negotiation between preservation and change confronts all ancient cultural traditions in modernity. The specific application invoked in this Article concerns the issue of women being called to read publicly from the Torah, a subject of serious academic debate among observant Jews. The analysis demonstrates that the virtually …
